    Book Description

In this first solo project by the founder of Mexico City's TEN Arquitectos and BGP Arquitectura, Gomez-Pimienta undertakes the complete design of a single audacious residential project--from the architectural concept to the objects contained within. In Casa GDL, Minimalist rigor finds expression in the superimposition of prisms, while Gomez-Pimienta's exquisite sense of design comes through in details like the railings, steps and glass floor. With texts by Yoshio Futagawa, Dominique Perrault and Miquel Adria, this volume presents a house where, in Adria's words, "the most obvious column is the one that isn't there, the central space is the one that is emptied out, and the most spectacular place is the one that can't be traversed."

      Book Description

From an essay by Carlos Jimenez:
"Since 1983, when work on my house and studio began, the project has undergone a variety of transformations, expansions, assimilations--simply put, it has followed a path of growth and discovery. My proximity to this path's every turn puts me much too close for objective appraisal, yet this position offers an auspicious vantage point from which to reflect on the implications of architecture in one's life. I now gather some observations, memories, and moments, all of which emerge through one biographical detail or another--an inevitable outcome when writing on such a personal work, a work that by its evolving nature is both my first and my most recent project."

        Book Description

This is the first monograph published in the United States on Carlos Jimenez, whose work has been linked to the new wave of Spanish architects as well as to Latin American architects such as Luis Barrag‡n. Jimenez's buildings are known for their purity of form, use of bold color, and sophisticated ordering of spaces. His simple geometries allow light to define and animate his otherwise tranquil interiors.

This monograph presents eight of the architect's most stunning projects, including the headquarters for the Houston Fine Arts Press, the new Spencer Studio Art Building at Williams College in Massachusetts, the Central Administration Building of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and Jimenez's own house and studio complex.

Richly illustrated throughout with photographs, plans, and drawings, the book includes an introduction by Rafael Moneo, an essay by historian Stephen Fox, and a postscript by Lars Lerup, as well as complete project documentation.

I'm a classical musician and, of course, love beauty. I don't understand anything of Arquitecture but I admire it. I believe that Carlos Jimenez is one of the most perssonal, creative, simple and richely complex artists that I know (unfortunately not in person). And that book reflexed this things, if we can see.

"Using traditional craft methods (sometimes passed from mother to daughter, sometimes lost and reacquired), impoverished women the world over are improving the quality of their families' lives. To get clothing, food, and an education for their children, they create superb objects--baskets, garments and other textiles, pottery--that draw on tradition to enhance the future.

"This book of postcards features thirty glowing images of art helping to overcome adversity.

5 out of 5 stars A well balanced book between concept and technical info.......2002-01-18

It is great book - simple enough to provide a good overview of making videos and detailed enough to help you understand the required technologies. It really is an excellent book and I highly recommend it to new video makers. I also use the book after I go "shopping" for equipment or software to see how it fits with the concepts put forward in the book. It has been a real help in making me a more thoughtful buyer as well as a better video maker. The book covers how to take good video shots, the equipment necessary to interface with your computer, and the software to edit your movies. All the information you need to get a quick start is in this book.

        Book Description

The book principally addresses climate change and describes the remedial strategies for developing countries based on the 'Clean Development Mechanism' of the 'Kyoto Protocol'. It provides a very comprehensive account of the array of proposals and economic instruments devised by the international community - including the Joint Implementation and Emissions Trading initiatives of the Protocol - to abate global warming. The effects of other major atmospheric, land and water pollutants from industries and domestic sources are also covered.

                Book Description

The onset of globalization and the aging of populations have encouraged efforts to privatize the funding of retirement, putting at risk public pensions in many countries and giving pension and insurance funds great financial power. Private funds enjoy vital public subsidy, in the shape of major tax breaks, yet typically fail to give their policyholders a say, or subscribe to wider social objectives. Banking on Death traces the history of pension provision across the advanced capitalist world. It concludes that tax concessions should be confined to those funds which adhere to socially committed and sustainable investment programs, preferably on a not-for-profit basis. Blackburn offers a lucid survey of the debates on the future of social security in the United States and the struggles over pension provision in Britain , France and Germany. At once radical and realistic his analysis shows how gray capitalism could be transformed in pursuit of progressive goals.

                4 out of 5 stars immaculately researched.......2004-11-04

This is an immaculately researched book on the history, theory, and politics of pensions, private and public. It will be an important reference point for many years; the 'old-age crisis' is not likely to recede in importance. The book presents recent debates about Social Security fairly, and with sophistication. It describes the operation of 'gray capital' which arises from what economists call information asymmetries between owners and managers of capital. Readers will find stimulating its proposal for the socialisation of pension funds using a share levy as a source of finance. The writing is somewhat terse and dry, but always to the point

Like they say, everything changes when you have a baby. That's why the lilaguide has become the essential item on every new parent's checklist.

Most parents wish their baby came with some sort of user-friendly handbook. Luckily, babies come with a lot of excellent word-of-mouth advice from other parents and friends. In fact, we found that nearly every parent out there has a great piece of child-rearing advice, like which baby store is the most helpful, or which restaurant tolerates strained carrots on the floor. Someone, we thought, should write this stuff down. And that's how, please pardon the pun, the lilaguide was born. Our guides are literally written by parents for parents, through thousands of volunteer surveys. It's what happens when someone writes down all the parental wisdom, organizes it, calculates it and presents it in an easy-to-use format.

Apparently a lot of other new parents appreciate the inside scoop provided by the lilaguide, because our little green-striped books are quickly becoming a staple item in diaper bags across the country. You'll find us in bookstores, toy stores, gift stores and maternity wards. Not to mention at a whole lot of baby showers. We're rapidly expanding into major metro markets throughout the country, making the lilaguide the only national guide of its kind.

                          Book Description

As the first published daily account of the Trans-Mississippi war in Arkansas and Mississippi by a Confederate medical officer, this diary, now in paperback for the first time, offers a unique perspective and is a most valuable primary sourcebook. William McPheeters recorded details about the struggle to keep men alive, not only from battlefield wounds but also from exposure, sickness, disease, and malnutrition. It also provides intimate looks at Confederate civilians and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the army's high command west of the river.

From almost the moment of his departure for the war, the doctor kept a diary. It was a pocket-size notebook which he made by folding sheets of pale blue writing paper in half and in which he wrote in miniature with his steel pen. The journal appears in this book in its complete and original form, exactly as the doctor first wrote it.

St. Louis physician and Southern sympathizer, Dr. McPheeters' experience with Federal arrest and banishment, plus his day-by-day account of life in camp and with the local populace, gives an excellent picture of the impact of the Civil War in the Western Theater. You'll also gain knowledge of medical treatment, Confederate Trans-Mississippi politics, and military excursions by General Stirling Price.

                              Book Description

The culmination of more than a decade of work, this is the most complete manual available on the large family of insectivorous passerines, the Old World warblers Sylviidae, native to Israel and other Mediterranean countries.

The authors include detailed information on the phylogeny, distribution, ecology, appearance, and behavior of Sylvia warblers. They draw on tremendous experience and expertise to sort out the complex plumage variations of these notoriously stealthy birds, noting coloration changes by distribution, age, and sex. Attention is also given to the wide variation in song among Sylvia. The volume contains an incredible amount of original data, compiled from field studies and meticulous museum research. Importantly, the authors use a novel approach to systematics, resulting in the proposal of four new species splits. One of Europe's finest bird illustrators contributed the beautiful color plates, and a respected pioneer in field bird photography spent countless hours in desert conditions to obtain the 546 remarkable color photographs of these furtive warblers.

No other book has provided such an abundance of detail for one genus of birds, nor the quality and number of illustrations showing individual and geographic variation. All this, combined with DNA information on systematic relationships, makes this book unique among modern identification guides. It is that rare guide that constitutes both a major contribution to ornithology and an excellent reference for birders. It marks a new stage in ornithological literature and will set the standard for future works.

5 out of 5 stars Sylvia Warblers by Hadoram Shirihai.......2006-06-30

This a great book which I highly recommend for any birder who needs a text book to be used as a reference after spending an exciting day in the field. It is beautifully illustrated, reads easily and is a wealth of information which makes the understanding, identification and differentiation of the warblers native to Israel and other Mediterranean countries easy and exciting. It is not a field guide but a reference book which each time I have consulted has clarified for me quickly and logically problems found in the field. I consider myself lucky to be the owner of this magnificent monograph which obviously has been written and illustrated by talented experts who enjoy their work and sharing their knowledge with others.
