A Silent Giant.......2006-08-20

Yoshitomo Nara is one of my favorite artists. He is also a giant in today's Art world. Although, shy and soft-spoken his work speaks large volumes. He rarely talks about what inspired his work, because he allows his fans to come to their own conclusions. He also is someone with integrity because he refuses to sell out by allowing big corporations to take control of his work. As a result, he is not as big as he could be.

This book shows Mr. Nara in his Japan studio working on various art pieces. There are no words, just pictures of him working and concentrating. At the very end of the book, the author explains almost every picture to give you an understanding of what is going on. The book also explains Mr. Nara, a Japanese man, recently moved back to Japan and these pictures are some of the first pictures of him working in his native land.

A good-looking man, Nara actually lives in his studio alone because it allows him to create his work in a large area. As most people know, the spaces in Japan are small but Nara is used to working in big spaces because he lived in Germany for over a decade. Therefore, he purchased a warehouse to work and live in. You have to feel sorry for him because the climate in the warehouse is not ideal for a human being and he has very basic living set ups (for example, a kitchen).

I called this review, "A Silent Giant" because it fits Nara and this book.

My writing has become more focused since reading Ms. Parker's book. It is a detailed work on writing a business plan and planning a business. It guides the reader into his/her specialty and since my writing lacked focused, this book is on point.

This book is a very good overview of the business of writing from home. Just don't expect to see much indepth information here.

A good book for those just starting out and looking for information on the generalities of home-based work as well as some marketing ideas for the writing business specifically.

If your brand new to this area then I highly recommend this book. If you already have a home-based business or know most of the information needed for starting one up then I suggest other more specific books for your writing business.

One of the best books I have read on freelance writing. If you're ready to launch your own writing business or want to maintain a successful writing business, make sure you read this book by Lucy Parker. Well written and packed full of information! Very helpful, I wish I would have bought this before leaving my full time job to start my own business. So many things that I wish I would have had set up before hand. I am implementing much of it now. I have bought several books regarding running a design business from home, I recommend this one over all the others!

Very Thorough Is Lacking in Only One Area.......2005-09-04

As the previous reviewers have written, this book covers day-to-day information you need to run a DTP (or graphic design) business.

Have you thought about creating a policies & guidelines sheet for your customers? If you don't, you'll be sorry after a client blames you because they didn't proofread their job before it went to the printer. If you had the P&G to review with them, you would be able to bring it up BEFORE it becomes a crisis.

This book is loaded with examples like this; not just the ancedotes, but the forms that help your business run smoothly. As I mentioned, this book was lacking in only one area--financial recordkeeping was a mere two pages in this book. That subject could be a 200 page book in and of itself. Kursmark is so clever at writing about this subject in a friendly and conversational manner, I found myself disappointed not to get her help on recordkeeping.

That said, this book is highly recommended based on what it does cover, and I'm off to find a book to explain how to track expenses and the like.

I have only had time to read about 15 pages of this book, but so far it is fantastic! When I read more pages I will rate again, but like I said, this book is great. From what I have read so far, I would highly recommend this book. The author is very straightforward and her writing style is wonderful - easy to understand and down to earth.

Very effective resource.......2001-03-26

As a pro DTP & graphic artist, I didn't think there would be much more to learn to eliminate my employer and sell the services I did already directly to customers. In fact, thinking I was an expert of graphic design & all of the software made me mistakenly believe I was ready to pass out biz cards and start selling my services and wondered how this book could possibly be 200 pages for something so simple. I was quite wrong, however, and I'm so glad I read this book and got aware of how much more successful I could be by following the author's plan. There is a lot of lessons learned the hard way the author shared which would save anyone a lot of money and a lot of trouble, not to mention lost business. There is a lot of planning that needs to happen before one passes out there first bizcard and I would not have had a clue were it not for this book.

The author of this book has done an excellent job in providing the 'would-be desktop publisher' with lots of great information on how to get started in this business. The book is very clear and concise, with a sense of humor. It provides information step-by-step so it's very easy to follow.

Mary Ellen Bates has created a very well-written, informative work that covers all of the salient aspects of starting one's own information services business - including those that someone looking into the field would never even think to ask about. Ms. Bates' writing style has a personal feel that is at the same time very professional. Her personality as a no-nonsense, savvy, and yet friendly information services professional comes across on every page.

The book really covers two important but somewhat distinct skill sets: how to start and run a successful business and how to be a successful information services professional. Ms. Bates' apt writing style weaves these two elements together quite seamlessly.

I suggest reading "Building & Running a Successful Research Business" cover to cover before spending your time reading any one of the more generic books available on the topics of how to find information online or how to conduct research. Once you have covered all of the bases with Ms. Bates' work, it would then be prudent to pick up some of these other works to dive more deeply into the areas where you need additional support.

An outstanding resource .......2007-01-10

Mary Ellen Bates is an internationally-known presenter on business information and research topics, however in this book she talks not about where to find information, but about how to build a business doing just that. The book is practical, inspiration, and actionable, but also makes it clear that the life of an information entrepreneur is not for everyone. A great resource for those considering this career path, or those already in it who need a bit of professional, albeit friendly, coaching.

Many Pages, Minimal Useful Content.......2006-08-20

There are a variety of approaches to starting a Research Business, and this book simply does little justice to providing business-smart content for doing just that. If you want to embark into a research business on your own, this might give you a vision but it will certainly not give you the business smarts you need to really start and manage your new business. Best to look into resources on starting a consulting business and other resources about starting any business.

So many "how to" books are filled with airy reiterations of the obvious or catchy but useless "10 Ways to..." Build and Running a Successful Research Business, on the other hand, is dense, useful, funny, insightful, honest and inspirational. A true page-turner in a genre that so rarely sees this caliber of writing or thought.

Great book on how information pros work.......2005-08-09

I bought this book hoping for tips on research, and I got what I wanted. I was also impressed by how this book was organized. It contains a LOT of information, and it seems to me that this information is all relevant and useful. If finding information and doing research is part of your career, this would be a good book to have. I'd also recommend it for people who are likely to hire information professionals.

This book explores the factors affecting the survival of small populations. As the human impact on Earth expands, populations of many wild species are being squeezed into smaller and smaller habitats. As a consequence, they face an increasing threat of extinction. National and international conservation groups rush to add these populations, species and sub-species to their existing endangered and threatened lists. In nations with strong conservation laws, listing often triggers elaborate plans to rescue declining populations and restore their habitats. The authors review these theoretical ideas, the existing data, and explore the question: how well do small and isolated populations actually perform? Their case study group is the song sparrows of Mandarte Island, British Columbia. This population is small enough and isolated enough so that all individuals can be uniquely marked and their survival and reproduction monitored over many generations. This is one of the strongest long-term ecological studies of a contained vertebrate population, now in its 31st year.
