What America Was Thinking in the 1930's.......2005-07-14

The value of Martin Grief's "Depression Modern" is that it helps clarify what was going on in American Decorative Art and Architecture in the 1930's. It is very easy to associate the 1930's with Art Deco. Many of the great buildings and public spaces of the time decorated building fascades with Art Deco motiffs. However, most of the great American designers of the time disliked the overly ornate Art Deco style. They thought the style was decadent and did not represent American democaratic values.

From the distance of 70 years, it is also possible to think that American designers were greatly influenced by European Modernism. Although aware of Bauhaus, these American designers wanted to put an American twist on Modernism. The result is what Martin Greif calls Depression Modern. Others call this same style Streamline Modern or Moderne.

Depression Modern was first published in 1975 during the first Art Deco boom. The tone of the book is iconoclastic. Greif wanted to let the world know that the 1930's America was not all Art Deco. This is a beautiful book with many great photos. Although while not an art historian, I think the historical importance of this book is that Martin Greif was one of the first persons to start defining early American Modernism. If one wants to understand Mid Centruy Modernism, it is important to look at the first manifestations of American Modernism.

A unique reference book of the Moderne style.......2001-09-25

Martin Greif's book is the definitive photo study of thirties Moderne design. His introduction details how a small group of brilliant designers refined Art Deco into a unique American design style. Greif uses most of the 260 excellent photos to show commercial and residential architecture, a discipline that was easily able to show the spirit of the style. Strangely there are no examples of the stunning Greyhound bus terminals designed by W Arrasmith, hundreds of thses terminals spread the message of Moderne to every city and town across the nation.

Other photos cover transportation and products, though Grief feels a lot of Moderne design in these areas is not much more than clever marketing, adding three or four speed lines to the casing of a product and calling it STREAMLINED. The famous steam trains of the period just covered the basic engine with a sleek shroud.

I think Greif is right to concentrate on buildings, if you want to see products have a look at these two lovely books: American Modern, 1925-1940: Design for a New Age and American Streamlined Design: The World of Tomorrow. Both are full of streamline products beautifully photographed and with the Greif book you'll have a remarkable overview of this fascinating style.

This book looks rather strange at first, but after getting past the first couple of pages you really appreciate the beauty of layout and contexts. Some of the ideas are truly excellent! Well worth putting into action. After trying out several of the exercises at work I was promoted to the post of Private Secretary! So the book speaks for itself!

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

My favorite chapters were:

1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business' structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 50 versions of this book sold; the only state I haven't found a copy for is Montana. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

Vivid Photographs. Well put together........2000-03-29

The photographs are very done well and nicely put together. There is a German/English glossary in the back that is a plus. Unfortunately with this, as with other regalia and costume books, some of the hard to find uniform descriptions that I am lookng for are not in there. I have yet to see a description or photograph of a camp commandant's uniform, which surprises me. I would like one for my writing, but I'm about to give up on finding a description of what I need.

Tons of superb photos of high-end Heer militaria!.......1999-05-11

Well-orgaized, high-quality photos (along with numerous close-ups of prominent features) accompanied by insightful text provide an excellent sourcebook for collectors and historians. Author traces the developement of Heer uniforms throughout the course of the war in a series of plates depicting models dsressed entirely in period uniforms. Well-researched and well-presented! For it's price one of the best on the market.

His accounts on hard-to-find items are valuable........1999-04-17

Though containing fewer photos on previous books on this subject,As a collector, I think this book has its own value in introducing hard-to-find items, like Army summer service tunics,and General's tunic

Too Much Emphasis on Officers.......1998-06-19

This is a fine book except that it features only about 28 uniforms and more than half is devoted to officer uniforms. So it's a rather poor source for enlisted men's uniforms as seen on the battlefields. Maybe the title should read "German Army Officer Uniforms and Misc. Others." Also, it would've been nicer if the photos were shot not inside a studio.
