Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The first book published solely on Dubai's architecture and design.......2006-10-09

Dubai is the hub of the modern Middle East: a growing city sporting the world's largest luxury hotel and more, but it's important to note that DUBAI: ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN is the first book published solely on its architecture and design. Any interested in Middle Eastern culture and arts should have this, from college-level art libraries to specialty collection on the Mid East: it charts the roots of modern Middle Eastern design, pairing full-page color photos with insights on architectural achievement and history. While it's a specialty item, its importance is unsurpassed for such holdings.

    Book Description

In the last few years, the Persian Gulf city of Dubai has exploded from the Arabian sands onto the world stage. Oil wealth, land rent, and so-called informal economic practices have blanketed the urbanscape with enormous enclaved developments attracting a global elite, while the economy runs on a huge army of migrant workers from the labor-exporting countries of the Indian Ocean and Eurasian regions. The speed and aesthetic brashness with which the city has developed have left both scholarly and journalistic observers baffled and reaching for facile stereotypes with which to capture its city's identity and significance to the history of urban planning, architecture, social theory, and capitalism.

In The Superlative City, contributors from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and colleagues from the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and Denmark offer the most serious analyses of the city to appear to date. Remarkable aspects of Dubai, such as the size and theming of real estate projects and the speed of urbanization, are situated in their local and global architectural, political, and economic contexts. Planning tactics and strategies are explained. The visually arresting aspects of architecture are critiqued but also placed within a holistic view of the city that takes in the less sensational elements, such as worker camps and informal urban spaces.

David Pearce has a long-established international reputation in environmental economics. This new book presents a selection of his recent essays, some of which are published here for the first time. The book begins with an introduction which gives an insight into the development of David Pearce's career in environmental economics. It is also an accessible guide to the role that environmental economics can play in policymaking and a forceful defense of his own position vis vis different schools of thought.

The essays cover four broad themes: ethics and ecological economics, sustainable development, applied environmental economics and global environmental change. Specific subject areas include: environmental valuation, forestry, wildlife conservation, risk assessment, global warming and the role of carbon taxes.

David Pearce writes in a lucid and clear style which will appeal to students and scholars of environmental economics as well as political scientists, environmental managers and policymakers.

              Book Description

This volume evaluates the pattern and the function of foreign capital in developing countries in a long-run perspective. The main conceptual instruments employed are the theory of economic growth and the techniques associated with recent advances in growth econometrics. Empirical work points out that there is no mechanical trade-off between the short-term dangers and the long-run gains from capital market integration, but growth benefits of foreign capital in transforming economies are conditional on an effective destination of the resources. Over-borrowing and excessive consumption are the main pitfalls in the short-run as in the long-run. Nevertheless, foreign capital can be conducive of faster growth and possibly higher welfare.

4 out of 5 stars goldmine for financial and development economists.......2000-06-15

this is the latest book i could find on foreign capital. iam researching on 'capital flows' and i found this book extremely useful. it deals with flows of capital in developing countries. the good point about this book is that it deals comprhensively with the topic of capital flows, from its historical point of view to the latest trends , even touching the topic of south east asian crises. the only problem is that the general reader may find it difficult if he or she is not familiar with econometrics and calculus. nevertheless it is a goldmine for economists and researchers in the field of economics and particularly international finance, especially in the topic of capital flows. it deserves four stars from those who understand calculus and econometrics but two stars from general readers who will be able to understand the extent, forms and determinants of capital flows in the international economy.

                3 out of 5 stars Excellent effort.......2004-04-21

Altogether this is an excellent effort made by Chowdhary. The starting is owesome. I think at some places the author failed to convey the thought which was in his mind. Due to this sometime the reader gets bored and looses intrest. Also way too much mentioning of his native country which is not really a bad idea but it made the said topic irrelavant. I would say the Book returned 50% of what it was intended to do.

2 out of 5 stars Okay, but nothing special.......2004-02-26

Mr. Chowdhury's writing is quite dry and I didn't get much out of reading this book. I was quite disappointed after hearing so much from others.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!!! Talent is critical for business success!!!.......2001-12-30

I read Chowdhury's previous bestselling book THE POWER OF SIX SIGMA in which he explained complex topic like Six Sigma in entaining way. And one of the important element of Six Sigma as Chowdhury explained "PEOPLE POWER". His latest book "THE TALENT ERA" reemphasizes the power of talented people to any type or size of organizations.

If you want to read only one business book this year, BUY this book and READ each chapter very carefully. Each chapter presents NEW and INNOVATIVE IDEAS in the field of Talent management. Chowdhury's "7 SECRETS of Talent" is a MASTERPIECE Chapter I read in a business book after a long time - it is INSPIRATIONAL. This book should be in every manager's reading list in this economic turbulant time. As managers want to CUT people during tough time, but Chowdhury argues that PEOPLE is the MOST IMPORTANT ASSET of an organization and make sure that you are not getting rid of TALENTED PEOPLE. Chowdhury's theory of RETURN ON TALENT and The Talent Scorecard are very powerful and fresh in management literature plus it is practical.

I strongly recommend this book to everyone.

                    Book Description

Welcome to the Jungle brings a black British perspective to the critical reading of a wide range of cultural texts, events and experiences arising from volatile transformations in the politics of ethnicity, sexuality and "race" during the 1980s. The ten essays collected here examine forms of cultural expression in black film, photography and visual art exerging with a new generation of black British artists, and interprets this prolific creativity within a sociological framework that reveals fresh perspectives on the bewildering complexity of identity and diversity in an era of postmodernity. Kobena Mercer documents a wealth of insights opened up by the overlapping of Asian, African and Caribbean cultures that constitute Black Britain as a unique domain of diaspora.

As a result of the turbulent displacements of the 1980s, new forms of hybrid identity came out of the margins while others were progressively de-centered. Looking at the United States and Britain as societies of the black diaspora, ambiguous manifestations of this dynamic are critically examined across a variety of surfaces from Michael Jackson's ethnic androgyny to the cut`n'mix profusion of post-essentialist sensibility expressed in the medium of black hairstyles.

Both professors and students quote hooks, Hall, and Bhabha all the time, yet few refer to Mercer's work. I find this to be such a wasted opportunity. In this collection, he writes on diverse topics such as Robert Mapplethorpe, black hair, Michael Jackson, etc. I saw him once in person and he kinda reminds me of a black George Michael. This was strong cultural studies that I think many black thinkers and gay thinkers (and when I say "thinkers" that includes "paper writers) should find useful. I don't agree with all of his conclusions. Still, there is so much here that would make any paper in cultural criticism look very well informed. My only question for the author would be: "When are readers going to get more great works of yours like this out there?!"

This book brings back so many memories of my childhood. I read it when I was ten or so. Anderson's vivid descriptions of his adventures in the Indian jungle are classic. You can almost see him in his post colonial hunting garb and hear his British accent as you read this text. His style is a bit old fashioned, but fun. As a kid, this book really added to my vocabulary. It's a fun trip back in time.

5 out of 5 stars Deep down in the Jungle where the Cocanuts grow..............2006-01-27

This is an interesting book. Actually, it's more about sociology and folklore than a mere collection of dirty jokes.

Basically, the white folklorist Roger Abrahms spent some time in the late 1950s living in the Philadelphia ghetto. He befriends a number of the locals who are fascinated with his tape recorder (this was when they were new) and proceeded to record their folktales, songs, rhymes, and stories.

To his credit, Abrahms does not patronize his black sources. He also writes about them and their lives with respect in the chapters preceding the tales. But what makes this controversial is that the tales he records are the rough, uncensored kind that black comedians like Redd Foxx, Rudy Ray Moore, and Richard Pryor would not publicly record until a few years later. Many (middle class) African-Americans at the time saw this kind of humor as an embarrassing throwback that would hurt their chances of integrating into mainstream America, thus it was heavily criticized at the time.

But taken as it is, the sometimes bawdy tales like "Shine and the Titanic," "The Signifying Monkey" (the title of the book is the opening stanza from this), "Stagolee", "The Preacher and the Bull," etc. were street folk tales that were told for years in Black communities. Previous folklorists such as Langston Hughes tended to clean them up for public consumption. But the fact that these tales were told in the streets for so many years is proof that for better or worse, what we now know as "Gangsta Rap" is nothing new.

Incidentally, the story of Roger Abrahms's experiences getting these tales in the Philadelphia ghetto and the initial controversy behind this book would make an interesting movie.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Seminal Texts of Dirty Jokes as Literature.......2000-05-19

Originally written as a Doctoral Dissertation at the University of Pennsylvania, Abrahams' work is one of the 5 or 6 leading books on dirty jokes as folklore/literature. His commentary isn't as deep or as amusing as Gershon Legman's work in No Laughing Matter or the Vance Randolph commentary in Pissing in the Snow or Blow Out the Candle, but it is well worth reading anyway. With the fascism inherent in the political correctness movement, these books are a wonderful, but safe, way of enjoying filthy, smutty ethnic humor without being attacked as a sexist or racist. Not just that, they're damned funny too.

5 out of 5 stars Tough, but good.......2005-08-24

My history professor claims that this is one book which former students complain about years after having read it. It is dense. There are lots of odd names which run together. It is absolutely not for the casual reader. But I would consider it necessary reading for all scholars of China, Asia, or just history in general. I found it fascinating that the steppe tribes and the various Chinese governments had a not-always unspoken agreement, in which the tribes were essentially allowed to conquer a limited region of China, in exchange for securing trade routes and defending against tribes outside of the system.

Barfield's primary thesis is that the dynamics of Chinese civilization are not intelligible considered in isoloation. Rather, comprehension requires the distinction between Manchurian and Native dynasties and the role that empires of the steppe played in the changes between them.

Of special interest is that by far the best know steppe empire, that of the Mongols under Temujin and his successors, was an anomalous exception to the 2,000 year pattern. Typical steppe empires were interested in extortion (or tribute, or gifts, depending on who tells the story), not direct rule.

If you're a student of Chinese history or of the dynamics of civilizations, read this book. You'll think differently.

                                  Book Description

When seen hunting over a meadow, barn owls have an ethereal grace and beauty that can be matched by no other bird. The barn owl has an almost global distribution and has lived in close proximity to humans since settlement and farming created the forest clearings needed for hunting and places in which to nest. However, in many countries, barn owl numbers are falling rapidly. This book explores the relationships between barn owls and their prey worldwide, and demonstrates how an understanding of such relationships can help in the conservation of the species. In this comprehensive account, Iain Taylor describes the biology and ecology of this species, including the factors affecting breeding success, and causes of mortality affecting the final recruitment of new birds into the population. He concludes by suggesting ways in which we can manage and conserve this beautiful bird for the future.
