Amsterdam's eastern docks area, Oostelijk Havengebied, occupies a cluster of artificial peninsulas laid out at the turn of the last century. When it fell into disuse in the 1970s, the city decided to transform the area into a high-end residential district. Now nearly completed, the project is illustrative of two decades of Dutch architecture and urban design.

This book is VERY cute, just as the cover conveys. There are lots of good ideas for a young girl wanting to draw ballerinas and princesses. The stickers are a nice added plus. My daughter who is 6 is enjoying it. I think girls 4-8 would enjoy it.

Great for Girls Who Love To Draw Princessy Things!.......2006-12-27

My 8 year old daughter LOVES this book. She immediately started following the directions for drawing "Princesses in Gowns" and had instant success. The step-by-step is not bogged down with extra explanations that might be of great interest to older children, but would just be taking up space for kids who want to dive in and draw. There are plenty of variations on each drawing to give kids the idea of improvising on the basics, both in the poses of the figures and in the embellishment on clothing, hair, etc. My daughter considered a few of the author's variations for gown embellishment, then pulled out one of her K.Y. Craft books for more ideas, because, as she put it, she had finally drawn a princess with a gown that was good for decorating. There is a whole page of hairstyle ideas, all kinds of inspiration! Great springboard for creativity!

There are also paper-cutting activities, stickers, hints to help when using other media (paints, felt tip pens, etc.), and everything is kept to such a simple level that even a child who thinks she can't draw or has been repeatedly told in school that she is not good at art can look at these with confidence, try them out, and get wonderfully rewarding results! My daughter loved to draw until she went to public school. These books have let her have back her love of drawing.
I have tried the Ed Emberly books (good, cute, just not very girlish), the Draw Write Now program, and a long list of others. I have been trying everything for the past few years to help this child overcome the feedback she received from teachers ("too slow, never finishes anything, not using the right colors, not using enough colors, poor handwriting, poor drawing, uses stick figures," etc.) beginning in kindergarten and continuing up to the present. She loved drawing and wrote little stories almost daily before entering kindergarten... then it all ground to a halt when she started hearing that she had to hurry up and that she wasn't very good at it. This book gave her back her love of drawing. I have already ordered more by this author and will continue to buy books written by Fiona Watts. They are very good for my little girl's soul.

A pretty, flashy book...BUT ! ! ! .......2006-12-16

I bought this book for a 7-year-old niece who loves to draw. This is a bright, pretty book with a sparkly cover and extremely cute pictures of princesses and ballerinas, BUT I was disappointed in the actual drawing instruction the book offers.

The written instructions are often mediocre ("Draw a circle for a head. Add her face and ears. Then draw the bodice and skirt of her dress. Add little shapes for the toes of her shoes"). The accompanying how-to-draw diagrams are only 2" high by 2-1/2" wide, which is much too small. Like my niece, I think most children will skip over the diagrams and their accompanying text and go immediately to trying to copy or trace the large color pictures instead.

The book also lacks any discussion of drawing basics, such as body proportions, basic shapes used in drawing (circle, triangle, oval, etc.), and sketching lightly first so unwanted lines can be easily erased. These things are assumed rather than discussed or pointed out directly. The book also does not really encourage creativity or originality; the idea here is to copy the pictures shown in the book.

As stated earlier, this is a very cute book, but you might want to be aware of lack of real "how to" information.

Great for Little People Artists.......2006-11-10

We purchased for our daughter's 8th birthday. She loved the previous drawing books we had bought and this brought just as much enjoyment. The directions are easy to follow and produce great results.

A fabulous book for a mom of young ones.......2006-01-11

I loved this book. After having two kids in 2 1/2 years, I felt like sex was the last thing I thought about, the last thing I wanted to do. And I felt like a freak because of it! here I am in my late 20's and not desiring sex. Jill presents the material in a funny, non-judgemental way. My husband and I have faith in our God and Jill makes it very clear that our relationship with God is the most important part of cultivating a healthey relationship with each other. It is a book about sex, but it is more importantly a book about healing and strengthening a marriage in a Godly manner.
A must read for any stressed new mom!

Disapointed by a few aspects.......2004-03-01

Although I was initially excited to read this book, I found myself disapointed. There is some helpful information on building intimacy,however;I was disheartened to come across her chapter on being a mother or lover where she discusses how she learned not to be "child-centered" by keeping her children out of her bed and letting her babies cry it out along with quotes by Gary Ezzo(He is known to be very controversial). She came across as her way was the only right way to raise children and to have a Godly marriage and I wholeheartedly disagree with her. As a mother of 4 myself, my husband and I have taken a different road and still maintain a Godly marriage. I know many many others who have done the same. I would have liked to have seen her display the different options, pros and cons and left the parenting styles up to the individual couples...The good information on sexuality I have found in other sources such as Intimate Issues by Dillow and Pintus.

Couldn't put it down!.......2004-01-05

Someone recently gave me a copy of Jill's book. I didn't think I would be interested in it because our kids are long gone--married for years. But as I thumbed through it, I couldn't put it down! I would highly recommend this book for any marriage in any season.

Graceful guide to intimacy.......2003-12-03

Jill Savage has gifted Christian couples with her new book, Is There Really Sex After Kids? The central part of the gift is grace--lovingly teaching the reader about those things that inhibit intimacy, better ways to communicate physical need, and male/female differences of desire. The Christian community needs more such books of grace. I recommend this quickly-read book highly.

As a speaker and author, this is a book I would not only share with other women, but will carry on my table so that women can buy it and enjoy the common-sense wisdom contained inside. My first "ah" moment was when I read the definition of intimacy. There were many more moments such as that as I heard the heartbeat of a woman share an honest and straightforward path to sexual intimacy for couples who juggle work, kids, and life. Highly recommended. I receive tons of books to review and only a handful stay on my shelf as treasures. This is one of them.

IN A NUTSHELL: TRUE MILITARY HISTORY AT ITS BEST: TRUE - DRAMATIC & ENTERTAINING

True military history that is a compelling read is a rare commodity, but this book is filled with the stuff from cover-to-cover.

WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT:

At the onset of World War 1, Germany found many of its surface vessels on station at distant ports, with little prospect of engaging the larger and more universally harbored British fleet. While in the process of sortieing back to Germany, and harrassing rather than engaging the larger British fleet, many German ships found themselves in the rather unexpected role of surface raider. With successful actions, like the Emden's and Konigsberg's, at the war's onset, a new and more deliberate effort to keep the British navy away from home in force was continued throughout the war. Unlike the U-boats, this surface fleet was designed to attract the attention of the British navy and to literally keep them on as many wild goose chases as possible. Their strategic goal was to reduce the numerical superiority of the British Home Fleet versus the German's 'High Sea's Fleet' pending a decisive action in the European theatre, like Jutland. Naturally, beyond their strategic goal of diverting the Royal Navy, they had tactical objectives such as:

1]- Destroying British cargo vessels and war supplies en-route.

2]- Disrupting wireless communication.

3]- Collecting the coal and other provisions they needed to stay on station without the aid of a supply train. Naturally, this meant pirating much of they needed from English sources.

4]- To observe the civility and decency as provided under international law.

The fourth objective seems in conflict with the other objectives of war, but that is what makes the story so interesting. In literally all instances, the German surface raiders of World War 1 behaved in a most admirable and chivalrous way. How they maintain this very high standard of conduct while fighting a superior force in a lost cause is what this volume is filled with. The ingenuity demonstrated by both British and Germans, including the first real air reconnaissance [on both sides], decoying, provisioning off-station, and camouflaging [German] makes for a fascinating read.

ABOUT THE BOOK: READS SO WELL ONE COULD FIND THE SCRIPT FOR A DOZEN HOLLYWOOD EPICS

After a comprehensive introduction which brings us up to speed on the state of the recent breakthroughs in propulsion technologies plus warship dispositions and fighting abilities, we get to the meat of the text.

CHAPTER FOR EACH SIGNIFICANT RAIDER: CRISP & INTERESTING

In alphabetical order each significant raider's history, including; Dresden, Emden, Konigsberg, Karlsruhe, Mowe and more [14 in all], is outlined comprehensively. Their stories are incredible for non-fiction, and beg to be made into war film epics as their drama, complexity and human interest are engrossing and universally compelling.

John Walter and the Naval Institute Press have another real winner here. The text is written in a way that draws the reader in, and allows both the military history enthusiast and the literate general reader an equal opportunity to gain from reading about this slice of early 20th century.

In this book one of the leading experts on the birds of New Guinea shares some of his experiences on this fascinating island with the readers.
Similarly to Flannery's Throwim' Way Leg, most of the field trips described took place in Papua New Guinea, where highlands, lowlands and off-shore islands were all visited.
In one chapter, the author ventures across the border to Indonesian West Papua, where he visited the central highlands.
Not just a mere personal account, the text is full of information about the ecology and fauna (especially birdlife) of this unique land.
I have had the fortune to be able to visit New Guinea repeatedly myself, but reading this book made me want to return there ASAP!
