5 out of 5 stars Egyptian palaces.......2007-02-21

I do not know how Ms. Johnston managed to take all this gorgeous pictures and publish a book so outstanding considering the fact that some of these villas are not longer opened to the public.
There is so much beauty in private villas.I remember some of my friend's houses, looked like palaces with gorgeous cherry wood, stairs that could envy Gone with the Wind movie. All The wood teak, ebony,Italian tiles and Greek original statues.
I strongly suggest purchasing this book,as you will see how people lived in this wonderful places.
There are much more villas to be photographed by I guess it is no longer allowed.

5 out of 5 stars Of Pleasures and Palaces..........2006-11-07

EGYPTIAN PALACES AND VILLAS may just be one of the more sumptuous books available on the always mysterious land of Egypt. For those of us who crave visiting the Alexandria of Lawrence Durrell or just having an inside view of the exotic pleasure domes of this bewitching country, then look no further.

Shirley Johnston has a talent for writing about countries in away that is more than a travelogue or picture book. Not that her books are impoverished pictorially: photographer Sherif Sonbol assists her in over 170 fine photographs of the splendors that Johnston explores. Within the cover of this Abrams book are views of palaces in Cairo, homes in upper Egypt that are directly lifted replicas of palazzos along the Grand Canal of Venice, treasures both ancient and contemporary that have not been available for viewing until this insightful volume.

Johnston's writing style is seductive, polished, and informed. This beautifully designed and produced book is a treasure trove for all those who dream of the days when wealth and Egypt - and mystery - were synonymous. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, November 06

4 out of 5 stars Places rarely seen .......2006-08-25

Almost all books on Egypt have photographs only of the antiquities. It is rare that the public is allowed to see the inside of most of the places included in this book, and it is a privilege to see photographs of them. The narrative is well done and very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring collection of photographic and informational documentation of historical and modern Egyptian architecture .......2006-06-05

Deftly authored by Shirley Johnston with help from Sherif Sonbol, Egyptian Palaces And Villas: Pashas, Khedives, And Kings is an inspiring collection of photographic and informational documentation of historical and modern Egyptian architecture and the progressive means by which it has come to be. Focusing on architectural design from the nineteenth century, Egyptian Palaces And Villas artistically presents an illustrious compendium of Egypt's most timeless and visually engaging domestic structures. An ideal choice for academic or public library Memorial Fund acquisition selections, Egyptian Palaces And Villas is very highly recommended reading for students of Egyptian culture, history and architecture.

5 out of 5 stars A Book That Captures The Essence Of Female Work On Film.......2007-05-01

Simply put, this is a book on photography of women at work. But it is more than just a collection of photographs, there is also the personal writings of the subjects of the photographs. And what I really like about the book is that it shows women in a variety of emotions. There is the photograph of the lawyer who is obviously struggling greatly over a case, a judge listening closely to the arguments of attorneys, the concern of the patient by the rehab nurse, who herself is disabled. The woman who doubles both as a dog groomer, and a belly dancer, and who obviously enjoys both occupations. Then there is the dedicated saxophone player concentrating on her music, and the cattle rancher who looks rough and rugged, yet enjoys her work.
And this brings me to another point about this intriguing book. You see women in different fields who either hate their job, or passionately love it. Women who hate running the machine, and women who seem to be on top of the world sweating in a hot kitchen at a restaurant.
Each photo comes with a personal story by each woman in the picture. You'll read about a 53 year old woman who works in a balloon factory, and another whom has worked 12 years as a Construction Equipment Operator.
There's the hispanic lady who began picking oranges when she was 16 years old, and now at 54, she is a citrus packer. Then there is the fascinating story of an girl with Downs-syndrome who works part time at a dry cleaning business. These and many more interesting stories and photographs are found in this book.
So many stories, and so intriguing lives, it is one book I proudly own.
The photographs are all in black & white, and are in perfect detail. No foggy images here.
If you enjoy photography, if you enjoy reading about other people's lives, people who work hard everyday, you'll want to own a copy of this splendid publication

              Book Description

The Fifth Edition of Managerial Economics heralds a new era for this classic text. Carrying on the tradition established by Edwin Mansfield in the book's earlier editions, Bruce Allen, Neil Doherty, and Keith Weigelt—all of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School—have prepared an exciting revision that capitalizes on proven strengths while embracing new developments in the field. Retaining a hallmark of Managerial Economics, the authors include a wealth of cases and applications that consistently anchor the exposition in the real world of business decision making. New to the Fifth Edition is a greater focus on applied microeconomics, with two new chapters, one on auctions and another on the principal-agent problems of firms. These new chapters, numerous new cases and applications throughout the book, and an exciting new package of electronic ancillaries promise to make the Fifth Edition of Managerial Economics the best yet.

              Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Too little game theory and too expensive.......2002-12-25

I had heard good things about this book but was left frustrated. Given the march of game theory over the past 15 years or so, I would have expected this to underpin the book's very word - but not a bit of it! Despite a nice section on auctions, the author tries to emulate existing texts (including previous editions of his own book) and does not take into account current developments in microeconomic theory. My other gripe is the price of the book. I am still hunting for a suitable text.

              5 out of 5 stars Managerial Economics.......2002-11-18

This book has undergone a major revision since the 4th edition. The authors have done a good job of explaining basic economic principles and then applying them to the business world. New chapters on auctions and incentive schemes are both informative and timely. This is a must reading for those who think economic principles are just for the classroom. Not only do the authors show how the principles are applied (through examples from the business press), they also concisely explain them.

A valuable book for both practitioners and students.

              3 out of 5 stars Communication??.......2002-11-05

This book is not easy reading. Do economists live in another world? I read a paragraph to my wife, an English school teacher, and she said that it was very poor English. The author and the school were he teaches, is very prestigious.

"The past two decades have witnessed a fundamental transformation in the structure of government across East Asia. Prior to 1990 most East Asian countries were highly centralized; today, decentralization is ubiquitous throughout the region. From China to Thailand, sub-national governments are now responsible for the delivery of critical services and account for a significant proportion of total public expenditure. In just two decades, local and regional authorities have emerged as the organizational fulcrum on which much of the weight of development now falls. East Asia Decentralizes is the first attempt to look systematically at this phenomenon throughout East Asia. It is broken into four main sections. Chapters 1 and 2 provide an overview of the intergovernmental structures and frameworks that have emerged thus far, assess the status of the decentralization process, and identify key reform challenges for the future. Chapters 3-7 examine various dimensions of local and intergovernmental finance: sub-national borrowing; local revenues; public expenditure management; and the impact of the process on inter-regional equity and poverty reduction. The management of human resources is also covered here. Chapters 8-10 focus on the impact of decentralization on investment and service-delivery in three key sectors: health, education and basic infrastructure. The final two chapters (11-12) look at issues connected with local accountability and community driven development. "

The ideas presented although sound are just too brief. For folks who have been working for years one can quote probably countless more scenarios that are left unexplored.

For example, the topic of backstabbing was just touched within a solitary chapter near the end of the book. The fact is, the general rule still applies irregardless of whether one buys this book or not, 1) build a rock solid foundation, build your reputation and keep to your end of the bargain. Which is good and hard honest work. Unfortunately, that cant keep you alive in a politically rife environment.

So identifying a political mindfield is just half of the battle. The next battle is, how to convince your peers to see the bigger picture and work towards a win/win situation where everyone succeeds. For a book entitled Positive Politics this area was never even mentioned.

I'm giving it 2 stars, cause it's not worth the money I've paid for it, the book lacks depth.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-01-10

From chapter one, I practiced the advise of the author. I stated feeling better about myself and started getting ahead at work.
                      A must read.

I find the materials covered in this book very theoretical and tangential and thus are not very useful.

                      5 out of 5 stars A real life saver!.......2001-04-27

As I'm struggling with office politics on a daily basis, this book really gives me a brand new perspective on how to deal with those "black art" experts and get ahead of the game without being acting like them. I would encourage anyone who is frustrated with office politics to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars a great piece of work.......2000-01-16

I can't say enough about this book. A true master piece. A real work of art.

                          Book Description

Any agenda for family research in the 1990s must take seriously a contextual approach to the study of family relationships. The editors and contributors to this volume believe that the richness in family studies over the next decade will come from considering the diversity of family forms -- different ethnic groups and cultures, different stages of family life, as well as different historical cohorts. Their goal is to make more explicit how we think about families in order to study them and understand them. To illustrate the need for diversity in family studies, examples are presented from new and old families, majority and minority families, American and Japanese families, and intact and divorcing families. This variety is intended to push the limits of current thinking, not only for researchers but also for all who are struggling to live with and work with families in a time when family life is valued but fragmented and relatively unsupported by society's institutions. Students and researchers interested infamily development from the viewpoint of any of the social sciences will find this book of value.

                          Book Description

This book tells the story of Subotai the Valiant, a warrior for Genghis Khan and one of the greatest generals in military history. Subotai commanded armies whose size, scale, and scope of operations surpassed those led by any other commander in the ancient world. Under Subotai's direction, Mongol armies moved faster, over greater distances, and with a greater scope of maneuver than any army had ever done before.

When Subotai died at age seventy-three, he had conquered thirty-two nations and won sixty-five pitched battles, according to Muslim historians. Had the great Khan not died, Subotai likely would have destroyed Europe itself.

Unfortunately little information is available from that era as to Subotai the man. As a subordinate, the scribes of the Royal Court would have naturally spent most of their historical writings (accurate or exaggerated) about the Khans themselves more than their subordinate generals. I believe that the author was fortunate to have scraped together what information that he could for this book by referencing what little material there is out there that cover Subotai the man (and his boyhood, etc., etc.). Of course maybe some more historical novels would be the right answer in that way some novelist's opinion could be used as an accurate measure of "who was Subotai"!

I believe that the author did an exceptional job in outlining the tremendously advanced tactical, operational, and strategical methods that Subotai (along with methods also developed by Genghis as he united the various Mongol tribes into one entity and then organized them). At a minimum, Subotai ranks up there with the greatest military commanders of all times: Alexander, Rommel, Jackson, etc. - but in reality, was so advanced for his time in history and developed to such a degree advancements that would not be seen again for centuries and possessed such an overall record of achievement (conquering 32 nations and winning 65 battles) that one must consider him most probably THE greatest military commander of all time to this point.

With the information prsented in this book - that is so lacking just about anywhere else - I can forgive the fact that the author didn't report on personal historical facts that he had no references to draw from!

3 out of 5 stars Falls a bit short of expectation's.......2007-06-30

As a book about Mongol tactics and campaigns it was quite good, as a book about Subotai Bagatur it fell a bit short of my expectations. I have read a few books about Genghis Khan and this one doesn't deviate to far from what I have learned and I give the author some points for the graphs and such detailing mongol tactics, but Gabriel leaves quite a few factual points unattended. At some points he explains events very thoroughly and at other points he gives you educated guesses, which for me was a bit of a downer.

He does deserve credit for trying to undertake a project such as a biography of Subotai, but I am forced to wonder if he just used the title to grab attention, because the main points are not even about Subotai. This book would be much smaller if it were just left to Subotai because there is so much filler that is unrelated, yet still interesting, to the title of the book.

You might be better off picking a different book unless you really want to know what little there is to know about Subotai.

3 out of 5 stars A book, less about the man, more about the campaigns.......2006-07-21

When I purchased the book, I had hoped it would be more about the man behind many of the great Khan's successful campaigns. Gabriel provides plenty of insights in an easy-to-read novel about a master military tactician.

I had hoped that the book would contain more information with regards to Subotai's character. What makes him tick? The introduction was good, which provided a history of young Subotai, and I certainly would like to have read more about his development.

                          Book Description

This book tells the story of Subotai the Valiant, one of the greatest generals in military history, surely the equal of Hannibal and Scipio in tactical brilliance and ranking right along with both Alexander and Caesar as a strategist. Subotai commanded armies whose size, scale, and scope of operations surpassed all of the commanders of the ancient world. Under his direction and command, Mongol armies moved faster, over greater distances, and with a greater scope of maneuver than any army had ever done before. His legacy lives to the present day, for much of the theory and practice of modern military operations was first used by Subotai. The modern emphasis on speed, maneuver, surprise, envelopment, the rear battle, the deep battle, concentration of firepower, and the battle of annihilation all emerged as tactical skills first practiced by this great Mongol general. Subotai died at age 73, by which time he had conquered 32 nations and won 65 pitched battles, as the Muslim historians tell us. For 60 of those years, Subotai lived as Mongol soldier, first as a lowly private who kept the tent door of Genghis himself, rising to be the most brilliant and trusted of Genghis Khan's generals. When Genghis died, Subotai continued to be the moving force of the Mongol army under his successors. It was Subotai who planned and participated in the Mongol victories against Korea, China, Persia, and Russia. It was Subotai's conquest of Hungary that destroyed every major army between the Mongols and the threshold of Europe. Had the great Khan not died, it is likely that Subotai would have destroyed Europe itself.

Subotai the Valiant was also Subotai the "Violent," who even by 13th century standards was brutally vicious in the slaughter of tens of thousands of noncombatant victims. Many of whom he arbitrarily slew just because he could. Gabriel relates some of these atrocities but excuses most of them because it worked to put fear into the enemy. Most Mongol generals and princes made Hitler look like a Kindergarten teacher.
The book is about one man, Subotai, but a brief history of the totality of the Mongol conquest successes AND failures would have been very useful. Yes failures; i.e. the Tokugawa Shoganate Japan twice, Mamluke Egypt three separate times, the Ghulam state of India and Annamese Vietnam were all successful at repulsing the Mongols for various reasons. These were ignored ostensibly because Subotai didn't fight in these battles. Battles where the Mongols were successful but Subotai wasn't present were mentioned, (mostly Genghis' battles.)
Then when Gabriel discusses the Mongols conquest of Russia, where there is a fair amount of info on Subotai and what he did to the Russians he edits a great deal out! The details of the battles in many cases for the Russian campaigns are extant and translated into English so it is a bit puzzling why he didn't use them, except to save Subotai's image from being a Mongol monster.
In strategy there are two ways of fighting: fighting to create destruction and fighting to create a decision. Most strategists understood that the first didn't always lead to the second. The best strategists could tell the difference. For all his brilliance there were many times when Subotai didn't.
"Subotai the Valiant" was written for the layman. It is not a treatise for historians. It is written in an easy to read style and moves along quickly. It will be helpful to have a basic background in the history of the 13th century before reading this book but it could be used as a jumping off point if you like research.
