Book Description
Praise for
Cite: The Architecture and Design Review of Houston:
"I find
Cite to be thorough, imaginative, always stimulating, and responsive to the diversity of the Houston community. I hope to see it continueI hope to see it flourish."
Larry McMurtry
"
Cite is one of the liveliest and most interesting journals on architecture and urbanism that is being produced today."
Robert Bruegmann, Professor and Chair, Art History Department and School of Architecture, University of Illinois at Chicago
"
Cite has become an important national publication, for it situates local and regional culture within the context of national and global issues. Thus it provides an antidote to provincialism, on the one hand, and to excessively abstract globalism on the other. Put differently, Cite proves that local concerns need not be parochial, while national or global trends have multiple variations."
Gwendolyn Wright, Professor, Graduate School of Architecture and Planning, Columbia University
"In my judgment, this magazine is competitive with any in the United States that focuses on architecture and the built environment."
Kenneth T. Jackson, Jacques Barzun Professor of History and the Social Sciences, Columbia University
"I know of few other publications in America that have so consistently, and at such a perceptive and sophisticated level, promoted high quality design as a mission of education and improvement.... I am devoted to it and read every issue with great interest, though I live a half continent away."
Laurie D. Olin, FASLA, Hon. AIA, FAAR, Practice Professor of Landscape Architecture, Graduate School of Fine Arts, University of Pennsylvania
Built around characteristic features of modern life such as rapid change, built-in obsolescence, indeterminacy, media orientation, a culture of style, and instant gratification, Houston is an ephemeral city, hard to pin down and understand. Its lack of zoning (Houston is the only major city in America without it) and a burgeoning population that doubles every generation have created a new urban paradigm, where displacements of traditional patterns of stability and urban ritual are now the norm.
Since 1982,
Cite: The Architectural and Design Review of Houston has explored the nature of Houston's evolution as an urban place by publishing commissioned articles by nationally known writers and architectural historians and high quality photography. This volume brings together twenty-five exceptional articles from
Cite's first twenty years, along with 224 black-and-white photographs, maps, and plans. The book is divided into three sections: "Idea of the City," edited by Bruce C. Webb, "Places of the City," edited by Barrie Scardino, and "Buildings of the City," edited by William F. Stern. The sections are introduced with new essays written by the editors to provide cohesion for the anthology and commentary on where Houston might be going in the twenty-first century. Most articles are followed by a brief update and bibliography of related articles published in
Cite.
The editors chose these articles to explore the developmental history and architecture of a flat, sprawling, free-spirited city that is impossible to capture through any one episode or explain through any one place. With a diversity of voices and a selection that includes both narrow and broad topics, the volume constitutes a collage that captures the essence of a remarkable placeinchoate, patchwork, full of youthful vigor, favorable to private enterprise, and one of the world's most fascinating cities.
Customer Reviews:
HOUSTON.......2006-05-14
Houston is the perfect subject for a book of this kind, it lends itself so well to current trends in urban planning and what a lack of zoning can facilitate. The text is scholarly and well researched, uh that should be an oxymoron, but alas it is not always. The authors really nailed Houston and I recognized the city completely. If you have any interest in urban planning or Houston in general, or frankly just well realized books, then I highly recommend this book to you. Well done indeed.
Revealing portrait of a city through its buildings.......2004-09-08
The best book on Houston that I know. This collection of articles on the architecture of the city captures its aesthetic history (or lack thereof) wonderfully. The book's production quality is clean and beautifully done, and the narratives reveal Houston's vicissitudes - its humble origins, its disinterest in history, its deification of power, and the origins of its sprawl. Excellent.
Another brilliant book by Barrie Scardino.......2003-12-16
Great compiliation of Cite articles masterfully edited by Scardino & Co.

Black Spain as Beauty.......1997-06-14
The pictures of Cristina Garcia Rodero capture the corners of rural or folcloric Spain with such gripping elocuence it is almost painful. With a hint of surrealism and a sense for the right moment to capture her subjects, she reveals the hidden Spain in all its darkness and grace. The subject is impressive but it takes an artist to peel the surface and go further and that is what Cristina has done

Book Description
One of the most important and complex problems facing both developing and industrialized nations is how to sustain economic growth without harming the environment. Faye Duchin and Glenn-Marie Lange address this issue in a practical and realistic way: through a detailed evaluation of the well-known approach to sustainable development outlined in the Brundtland Report, Our Common Future. Taking issue with the Brundtland Report's optimistic and widely accepted assumptions, the authors show that the positive effects of recycling, increased fuel-efficiency, and other technological adjustments will not go far enough to provide for truly sustainable development in the long term. Through a new, broad-based empirical analysis, they argue that unless there are significant changes in lifestyles and the use of technologies, continued environmental degradation cannot be avoided. They warn that the trend of making only slight adjustments in the use of technologies, while feasible from an economic point of view for industrialized nations, will undoubtedly lead to further environmental damage. In addition to offering a clear and unflinching look at what development is really doing to the global environment, the unique conceptual framework developed for this analysis provides an invaluable basis for analysis for the new, multidisciplinary field of ecological economics. Duchin and Lange describe how this new methodology will enable economists and policy-makers to evaluate our options for the future, and choose those that most effectively reduce environmental degradation and achieve sustainable development. The book will appeal to economists, environmental scientists and activists, policy analysts, and ecologists, as well as the general reader with an interest in the sustainable development of our environment.

We've all read books on how to succeed. And we know they say more or less the same things. Reading this book gave me a new inspiration and a different perspective on success. Sidney Friedman is an under-rated author and speaker. He is not only a superstar in his industry, but a superstar on the international stage of business. Let his stories and insights inspire you to greater heights of success in any endeavour. You won't regret buying it.

Customer Reviews:
Practical but kindergarten level advice .......2007-03-23
This book is truly overrated - I think the author should have been more inventive with suggestions - most mom's know these things but life is too busy to implement them - this book did not help - for instance buy at the deli instead of fast food - at the store deli you have to park go in choose check out go home divide and conquer instead of voila - DRIVE-THRU! Give us something that is new and worth reading in the next book - maybe title it How to Get Overweight Kids Healthy Again - Tips You Can Use to Help Them Lose. Good luck next time - this one is a bust.
Practical advice!!!.......2004-12-27
Finally a readable, common sense approach to feeding my kids. This book has many realistic ideas and useable recipes for a busy mom like me. Thankfully, my kids are already physically active, but this book has given me new ideas and notions to ensure that my kids stay active. Good job Dr. McAllister!!!
great help for moms.......2004-12-08
Finally, some help for a mom who needs help getting her kids to eat healthy foods. Lots of great ideas for fun lunches and healthy snacks that my kids actually look forward to eating. This book helps you understand how to get your kids to want to eat right without nagging. The "action plans" at the end of each chapter are a lot of fun for kids and parents, and you'll probably end up some of the activities family routines and traditions.
Waste of Time and Money.......2004-03-11
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that too much TV and too many snack foods will likely lead to an over-weight child. I didn't need this book to tell me to limit TV and have my children excercise in order to keep them in shape.
If you like fat-free mayonaise, fat-free cream cheese or reduced fat jarred turkey gravy, then this book is for you. I personally think that these things are disgusting, and wish that I not purchased this book.
I wanted to new ideas for heathy eating for children - this book did not provide it.
Great Resource.......2004-01-16
I loved this book! It has been a great resource for me as a professional and as a mother of three growing children. I am a family therapist who sees many single mothers of young children. They are often overwhelmed with the physical, emotional, and financial demands of parenting. This book's easy and quick recipes were perfect; not too time consuming, and not too complicated. Moreover, the education regarding the importance of healthy eating, was very well received. Dr. McAllister's humor and her easy reading style encouraged many of my clients to prioritize nutrition. Many of the moms I work with became excited about their own nutrition. They felt they were doing something important for their children and themselves. As a busy mom, I too appreciated the quick snack ideas. Kids want to eat "right now" and too often they grab what ever is in arms reach and can be ripped open fast. This book gave me some plan ahead ideas that did not keep me up all night. I was also reminded of the lack of nutritional value in many of the foods my kids reach for. It motivated me as well as my clients. It is a great resource. I also plan to continue to share it with my clients and my friends. Thank you Dr. McAllister!

Book Description
Soon after the start of the Civil War, during the naval buildup on the central Mississippi River, celebrated civil engineer Charles Ellet, Jr., formed the Ram Fleet under U.S. secretary of war Edwin M. Stanton. Perhaps the most bizarre unit organized by the Union, the rams were shunned by both the army and navy as superfluous instruments of war. However, on June 6, 1862, they proved their worth by defeating the Confederate River Defense Fleet ironclads at Memphis while the U.S. Navy simply watched. In this lively study, Chester G. Hearn details the formation and wartime exploits of Ellet's fleet, reviving the history of this fascinating but forgotten brigade. AUTHOR BIO: Chester G. Hearn is the author of many books on the Civil War, including Gray Raiders of the Sea; The Capture of New Orleans, 1862; When the Devil Came Down to Dixie: Ben Butler in New Orleans; and Six Years of Hell: Harpers Ferry During the Civil War. He lives in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Customer Reviews:
Ellet's Brigade -- a great yarn.......2000-06-14
When many people think of naval action in the Civil War, they likely think of the battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack. Ellet's Brigade is about the "brown water" action that took place around Vicksburg before and after the seige of that Confederate city. The brigade was run by a visionary, Charles Ellet, Jr., who believed the way to defeat the Confederate river navy was to use inexpensive, expendable rams. His thinking led to the Union victory at Memphis, where he was killed. After Ellet's death, no one knew what to do with the fleet of rams. Rear Admiral Porter, with the help of Ellet's relatives, developed a Marine unit and used the rams as part of a counter insurgency group against rebel guerrilla activities. Ultimately this effort failed, because there was no effective chain of command over the brigade. The brigade essentially ran itself and during the years following Memphis hurt the Union effort in the west as much as it helped it. Author Chester G. Hearn does a great job moving the story forward and documenting the facts. This is a good read and well worth any Civil War buff's time. I strongly recommend it.

Book Description
Opens up an important subject and present the findings of much diligent research. It is a significant contribution to the history of the political life and culture of the later medieval aristocracy. MAURICE KEEN Orders of lay knights - the most famous of which are those of the Garter and the Golden Fleece - were founded at some time between 1325 and 1470 in almost every kingdom of Western Christendom, and played an important part in the life of the court. Jonathan Boulton defines the `monarchical' orders as those with corporate statutes which attached the presidential office to the crown of the princely founder, or made it hereditary in his house. Modelled either directly or indirectly on the fictional society of the Round Table, they incorporated varying numbers of elements borrowed from the older religious orders of knighthood and from contemporary institutions. This study explores the nature and history of thirteen orders, and reveals them as not only an ingenious supplement to (or replacement for) the feudo-vassalic ties that still bound the leading members of the nobility to their sovereign, but also as the most important institutional embodiments of the secular ideals of chivalry that were at the heart of the international court culture of the age. JONATHAN BOULTON teaches at the University of Notre Dame.

Book Description
"The Websters have produced an entertaining and informative account of a magical place. . . . Their book should be of interest not only to those familiar with El Cielo or with other natural areas in Mexico, but also to anyone drawn to natural history, travel, and memorable places." --Lane Simonian, author of Defending the Land of the Jaguar: A History of Conservation in Mexico Hidden high in the Sierra de Guatemala mountain range of northeastern Mexico in the state of Tamaulipas is the northernmost tropical cloud forest of the Western Hemisphere. Within its humid oak-sweetgum woodlands, tropical and temperate species of plants and animals mingle in rare diversity, creating a mecca for birders and other naturalists. Fred and Marie Webster first visited Rancho del Cielo, cloud forest home of Canadian immigrant Frank Harrison, in 1964, drawn by the opportunity to see such exotic birds as tinamous, trogons, motmots, and woodcreepers only 500 miles from their Austin, Texas, home. In this book, they recount their many adventures as researchers and tour leaders from their base at Rancho del Cielo, interweaving their reminiscences with a history of the region and of the struggle by friends from both sides of the border to have some 360,000 acres of the mountain declared an area protected from exploitation--El Cielo Biosphere Reserve. Their firsthand reporting, enlivened with vivid tales of the people, land, and birds of El Cielo, adds an engagingly personal chapter to the story of conservation in Mexico.

A Wonderful Book -- A Wonderful Adventure.......2002-05-24
This is a wonderful book. There is an adventure with every page turn and the descriptions are deliciously vivid. I always look for books that will "take me away," and at the same time, teach me something new. The Road To El Cielo took me to Mexico's cloud forests and inspired in me a new appreciation for its wildlife, plant life, and way of life. Highly Recommended.
