Friedrich Kiesler: Endless House 1947-1961

Friedrich Kiesler was an architect, artist, designer, set designer and theoretician. His was the vision of a radically new concept for the interior: the idea of a polydimensional living space, an organically shaped continuum blending colors, forms and light with magical-mythical ideas to create an individual microcosm. Begun in the 1930s, his biomorphic design for an Endless House was based on this vision. It was to serve as his life-long dream and, though never realized, it nevertheless exerted a greater influence on architects and artists than have many of the built buildings of the 20th century. One of the many merits of Kiesler's architectural concept for the Endless House is that it wedded profound artistic exploration to different academic disciplines such as psychology, the natural sciences, the social sciences and the arts. With respect to its demands on living space, Kiesler's approach to design set the standards to which today's ubiquitous "bubble architecture" must measure up.

I find this book very easy-to-read. I like the format and layout of the book because I can quickly find a topic when I need more information. The sections are short and to-the-point, but with enough detail to give me what I need to know for specific situations. The information is practical and applicable. Plus the size of the book makes it easy to take anywhere. This book is really for anyone and everyone in today's multi-cultural world!

This is a really good book on business etiquette, and etiquette in general, although I have not read many other books in the genre as a comparison. Gives very specific, easy to find and easy to read information on any particular etiquette topic you're searching for, and gives it to you in short paragraphs and chapters. The section on proper use and placement of table utensils is a bit to digest if you've never paid attention before. Overall, great stuff.

A Very Good Read.......2005-04-01

I was impressed with this translation of Plutarch's Life of Alexander the Great. The prose was very clear and readable, and I finished the book very quickly. You shouldn't expect a detailed treatment of military or historical topics; the book is less than 100 pages in length, and such was not Plutarch's object anyway. Plutarch's Lives are really discussions of morality and character as evidenced in the lives of great men, and the history surrounding these men is really only a backdrop against which these things are portrayed. Use this book to begin to get a picture of Alexander the man; use other books to flesh out your understanding of Alexander the soldier, the king, and the politician.

A fascinating book.......2003-04-02

In this fascinating book, author Michael Holmes takes the historical references to fifth and sixth century Britain, and attempts to construct a chronology that fills in the details of this "Dark Age." Combining the information from a number of sources, often interpreted in new ways, he produces a thought-provoking history that helps to explain the different courses taken by Post-Roman Celtic Gaul (later France) and Post-Roman Celtic Britain (later England). Along the way, he finds that the legends passed on by the bards and storytellers ring true: that there was a great military leader named Arthur.

This is a fascinating book that I have already read twice. The author presents his argument in such a gripping manner, that reading it seems to pull the reader right into the story. It must be admitted that a good deal of what is presented in this book is deduction and assumption, but the author makes an excellent case for accepting his interpretation of the available (limited) data. If you are interested in the historic King Arthur, then I highly recommend that you get this book.

It is fascinating to read how Michael Holmes gathered evidence from many sources, minus the legendary stuff, to create a marvelous synthesis of the story of King Arthur and his military exploits. Holmes' study of history, archeology and British geography surely points out a plausible account of how Arthur influenced the future history of Britain in contrast to neighboring Gaul (France). After my reading the separate but conflicting histories, and my recent tour of Britain, I am persuaded by Holmes' account that his is most plausible. Any student of military history would also be intrigued and educated by the strategies utilized by Celts, Romans, and Anglo-Saxons in their military campaigns of the late Roman Empire and Dark Ages.

A Refreshing research of 5th & 6th century........2000-04-01

Having read extensively about Arthur and his legendary exploits, Holmes presentation examines the British history of the period against comparisons with the old western Roman empire, and the results are well worth effort. I found his conclusions believable, his theories refreshing and very interesting. He has approached this presentation in the same manner as would be done in making an intelligence assessment using all the known facts, grading levels of confidence, and speculating about a reasonable outcome. He does this very well and I am impressed with his efforts. Worth reading again. It surpasses any other material I have read so far.

Review of King Arthur, A Military History.......1999-12-17

The author does a good job of summarizing the situation in Britain following the withdrawl of the Romans: the threats represented by the Anglo-Saxons, Picts, and Irish are well covered. I found the discussion contrasting the Anglo-Saxon threat to Celtic Britain and the Frankish threat to Celtic Gaul very interesting.

His thesis that Britain and France developed differently largely because of the relative success of the British in delaying the eventual Germanic takeover compared to the rapid collapse of native forces in Gaul seems well-reasoned.

I agree with the other reviewers, however, that the chapters on the books primary subject, Arthur, are close to useless. Far too much is supposedly proved based on too little evidence. Arthur was a war leader in late 5th century Britain, almost everything beyond that is speculation and inference.

Buy this book for a good, concise history of Early Britain, not for King Arthur.

Book Description

Based around a design of R. W. Urie from 1918 for an express passenger class of 4-6-0s, the 'King Arthur' or 'N15' class eventually totaled some 74 locomotives.

The original 20 locomotives built to Urie's design were, however, not successful and when Maunsell was faced by the necessity, soon after the Grouping of 1923, to construct further express locomotives he took the opportunity of modifying Urie's design and the first of the modified design appeared in time for the summer timetable of 1925.

Alongside the new build, Maunsell also modified the original 20 locomotives. Successful as modified, the career of the class on both the Central and Eastern sections of the SR was curtailed by the SR's policy of main-line electrification, lasting only until 1933, for example, on the former. However, the type continued to offer sterling service on the ex-LSWR main lines until the arrival of the Bulleid Pacifics. Withdrawal of the class commenced in 1953, but it was not until 1962 that the final examples were withdrawn.

Excellent plates!.......2007-03-18

Everyone interested in the Arthurian legend will want to get a copy of Elizabeth Jenkins' excellent survey. The text is informative, and the plates are wonderful -- many in color. This book is for the general reader rather than the scholar, but the collection of works of art based upon Arthur makes it all worthwhile.

Sub-Roman Britain.......2007-04-07

Excellent book, gives plenty of information on the basics of Arthurian myth, on Britain and the Celts under Rome and in the early Dark Ages, and the role the historical Arthur might have played in the wars against the Picts and Saxons. The book also have several rewritten versions of Arthurian legends with their origin pagan Welsh names and themes, such as the 'Beheading Game' that led to the legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and the champion Lugh Strong-Arm who inspired the myth of Sire Launcelot. Also has detailed and colorful artwork to support both the stories and the main text. Highly recommended!

Incomplete bird list.......2007-08-23

This is not a book but rather a cardboard pamphlet. It lists some of the birds of Wyoming but not all. For example, it showed a Bohemian Waxwing but not the Cedar Waxwing. Both species are in Wyoming and if you didn't know that and you saw a Cedar Waxwing and you checked only that source you would assume that it was a Bohemian. To me, incomplete information is just as bad as incorrect information.

I had ordered this "book" as a gift for someone that is just beginning birdwatching and I thought it would help to have just the Wyoming birds in it, but after looking it over I felt it would confuse the situation much more than it would help.

I'm really sorry to give such a bad review, but there are many wonderful bird books out there and this is not one of them.
