Professor DeLorme writes like she lectures; with incredible amounts of fascinating information and anecdotes that reveal a wealth of information on pavillions, and how they played a role in the French Court. Her lively tone makes for a very enjoyable read on a fascinating subject, and the book is as visually beautiful as one could expect. If you can't see her lecture in person, this book is the next best thing.

Professer Delorme is a recognized authority in french decorative arts. This sumptuous work truly transposes the reader to another world . The text and illustrations are truly enlightening. I highly recommend this work for all library reference collections as well as art history students and collectors.

All of Hans Silvester's photography books of cats, dogs & kittens in the Greek Cyclades Islands are lovely examples of fine photography. As a fine art photographer myself, I respect Mr. Silvester's level of skill and artistry, and I find his other books very beautiful.

However, when I first became aware of his books about cats and dogs, I was thoroughly dismayed by his choice of subject matter and the way he has chosen to portray the lives of these creatures as idyllic and carefree.

Having been to these Greek islands, I have learned firsthand that the large majority of these poor animals are ignored, injured, or mistreated by people there-anything but "respected." The photographer has omitted portraits of the true conditions for most of the stray dogs and cats in Greece-crippled, starving, dying of thirst, hurt or maimed, with the humans around them barely taking notice.

The full horror of the story was later revealed to me by locals on the islands. Each year, the cats & dogs are allowed to breed uncontrolled, because tourists are fond of seeing the cute animals around town and on the beaches. At the end of each tourist season, as many of them as possible are rounded up and killed (I couldn't bear to learn exactly how), until the following year when the ones that survived begin the cycle all over again. I found this same story on all the islands I visited, including Mykonos, and I was so appalled that I shortened by stay and left Greece altogether.

The situation is a tragedy, and my feeling as a photographer and animal lover, is that Mr. Silvester should not be misrepresenting the condition of the cats and dogs on these Greek islands, especially when it is for monetary gain. I hope animal lovers around the world will agree, and send a message to anyone who profits in any way from the suffering of these dogs and cats in the sun.

Stunning Composition and Subject!.......2000-05-25

You don't have to like cats to adore these creatures, although if you do, you will fall immediately in love. Hans Silvester is a master at his craft and this book showcases his artistry to the nth degree. The contrast of the neutral colored fur of the felines and the pastel washes of the building backdrops, tie together in a flash of eyecolor that makes for breathtaking images.

Silvester's use of lighting, color, camera angles - and obvious patience - illuminates the personalities of this secret society. The photographs make one feel like an anthropologist eavesdropping unseen on their world.

This volume will satisfy those who admire cats, art, photography, the Mediterranean, architecture; or those who simply like to escape to a new world for a time.

Finally: Cats that aren't just CUTE!.......2000-02-25

I love the Mediterranean Cat. It continues this photographer's outstanding work already known from "Cats in the Sun". I have traveled to Greece many times and Silvester manages to show this country's eternal connection between the cats, the light, and the colors that I, too, have found so irresistable. Another reason I love Silvester's books is how he is able to avoid stereotype cat pictures. I love cats, but I hate how photographs usually show cats in "cute" situations. Silvester's cats are grown-up, independent, strong. Not much "cute" here, but a lot of respect, admiration and understanding for these beautiful animals. A tip: Also try "Cats in the Sun" - I find it even better than the Mediterranean Cat...

I bought this journal because my wife likes cats and so do I. It is a small journal that can be carried in a purse. I also liked the blue cats on the cover. They are so cool. This is a journal that is priced right and not to expensive. I would buy another journal like this to give as a gift.

I first saw these books in Old Town, San Diego and they were exquisite. I bought one as a gift and then stumbled on to them on Amazon (much cheaper!) so I bought about six more, all different, for Christmas gifts. They are so beautiful I am going to hate to part with them.

A fine piece of work.......1999-05-29

Dull title. Boring cover. Impenetrable first paragraph. Yet this is the best book on finance in Asia since I came to the region, twelve years ago.

Its greatest strength is combining highly readable broad-brush portraits of recent events and figures (such as Philip Tose), with a McKinsey consultant's overview of the significant trends in finance in Asia - market share, industry trends, etc - a broad view, with a quantitative edge which would not typically be available to the journalist. Such a perspective is highly unusual in Asia (which isn't, anyway, well written about). Well executed, well conceived. Rather reluctantly, I have to admit that I stayed up all night to finish it. Congratulations.

Less than one-forth of the "tips" in this book are specifically targeted at the arthritis sufferer's physical limitations, and the majority are nothing more than common sense. I wouldn't think that most people need a book to tell them to "keep frequently used phone numbers handy" so you don't have to look them up. And following tips like "Store tools on a pegboard and use a marking pen to outline the space for each tool" does not make my life with arthritis a bit easier. The good thing about this book is that sales proceeds help fund arthritis research, so I don't feel my money was totally wasted.

My mother has been struggling with arthritis for several years now, and it's been frustrating not having a concise resource that provides tips and suggestions on how to adapt her home environment, her habits in everyday tasks, etc. Then I heard about this book from a friend, and it has made SO MUCH DIFFERENCE in my mother's life. It's full of practical tips and affordable solutions to problems unique to people with arthritis or to anyone with mobility impairments -- really the book is great for anyone who wants to make their life easier. It is totally beyond my comprehension how or why ANYONE could want this woman as a source of spiritual enlightment, information, or admiration after reading this book! I was so totally disgusted, shocked and angry. Her justification of guns and giving hate back at unkind people made my mouth fly open! Where is LOVE? Where is compassion? Where is insight? AND, where is "what goes around comes around". I think Mary Summer Rain is a disgrace as any kind of teacher or role model in any type of spiritual capacity. She, and her entire family, came off as angry, bitter, mean spirited lowlife's to me.

This book was a shocker!An absolute must read.I can say with complete honesty,this book rocked my world.Mary brings to light some personal issues that blew me away(because I never expected it)I felt bad(not intention of authoress)because to me this was a friend going through some real tragedy,and I had no way of offering suppport ect...This book taught me so much,ecspeically after reflecting on it.I learned How just because someone is a completed soul or enlightened person doesnt mean life is grand.They have personal problems too.These people ARE your people next door! Just like Summer Rain always said.It took this book to make me understand what she was trying to convey.And I believe there are still many people out there that think they are not SIRITUAL or capable of becoming enlightened beause they have personal problems,or financial.Somehow we have the misdirected mindset that when we are spiritual evrything goes our way.not!This book should reach out to people on a quest for truth,who may be having a problems.(thats not to suggest misery loves company)Just,your not alone....and spiritual people suffer too.they realy are no differant then you.
