What constitutes a high-rise building? A high-rise is, in fact, any building with more than 9 storeys and not just those striking skyscrapers which shape modern city skylines. In the past architects who designed such structures used to be the exception but in the last 10 years more and more architectural offices have begun to focus on this type of building. However, the sheer complexity of designing and planning the construction of a high-rise as opposed to other building types requires a wealth of specialized experience and expertise. The High-Rise Manual is the first comprehensive reference work on this subject. All relevant aspects of such an undertaking are examined in detail by some 24 specialist authors. Each step is extensively documented including the initial project planning, the building organisation, the laying of the foundations, the supporting structure, the building technology, the office design, and the Facility Management. 4 out of 5 stars A technical manual.......2007-06-07

This book features great technical information and is very thorough. I was hoping for a few more floor plans showing the design of cores and their relation to floor plates. Nevertheless, very useful to have.

        Book Description

An exciting addition to White Star's renowned aerial presentation series, this handsome, compact volume takes readers on a memorable trip over Africa, giving them a rare glimpse of its spectacular, diverse landscapes and wildlife. Photojournalist Paolo Novaresio shares with readers his love of Africa in a portfolio of photographs that transports us to a land that remains, in many ways, wild and untamed. He captured unparalleled pictures of animal herds, savannahs, deserts, and deep jungle by using various means of aerial transport, including a montgolfier, a helicopter, and a twin-engine plane. His unique photographic techniques showcase the topography, light, and color of an entire region at a glance. More than 550 color photographs reveal a hidden Africa that readers could never experience without the benefit of these stunning above-ground views. Among the regions and countries photographed are Northern Africa and the Sahara Desert, Central Africa, Tanzania, Niger, Congo, Kenya, Ethiopia, Southern Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Armchair safari adventurers and world travelers alike will relish this aerial excursion over Africa.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent purchase!.......2007-01-16

Opening the Amazon package that arrived at my door, I was very pleased to take out and turn the pages of Paolo Novaresio's stunning aerial photographic journey of Africa. The book was smaller in size than I expected, but the photographs didn't disappoint, capturing extraordinary moments (like the flight of flamingoes) that would otherwise remain secrets known only by the residents of Africa. One also wouldn't guess that each photograph has been taken of the same continent due to the vast diversity of the landscape seen in the images, from deserts to mountain ranges.

This is a coffee table book that certainly won't gather dust. The brilliance of colour and contrast caught by the artistic virtuosity of Novaresio is an unending feast for the eyes.

            Book Description

Previous books on growth management in the United States favor balanced growth, which suggests that growth and environmental protection represent equally legitimate objectives. Taking issue with the balanced growth position, this book argues that further growth is unsustainable and that growth management must focus on ensuring ecological sustainability. The book opens with the arguments supporting current global limits to growth, and then shows that the growth management movement in the United States represents an institutionalized form of ongoing growth accommodation, which is incongruous with sustainable behavior. The book also documents the historical pro-growth tendency of the planning profession and contends that this bias is impeding the necessary transition to a sustainable future. In addition, it presents the standards courts use to decide the legality of growth management programs and suggests that those standards do not present insurmountable obstacles to stopping future growth. In conclusion, this book presents operational measures of ecological sustainability and argues that the growth imperative currently driving the growth management movement must be replaced by the imperative of ecological sustainability.

5 out of 5 stars Great that there are folks willing to tell it like it is!.......1999-02-16

The entire membership of the American Planning Association, every "professional" practicing planner, and every elected official from the local on down to the federal level should read this book. Current growth management efforts that are popping up all over the U.S. serve only as other examples of how our society continues to ignore the real roots of our problems. Growth management does not address carrying capacity or sustainability, instead it is another clever "band-aid" solution to societal ills. Until folks wake up, take action, clean-up corporate America and its destruction of all living organisms (yes, that includes humans!), and their own comsumptive and reproductive practices the picture for the future will only continue to look worse. Essentially, Zovanyi's book is a call for action and a challenge to anyone engaged in the planning profession to dare try anything different than its constant perpetuation of the "there's infinite growth" status quo camp of bureaucrats and special interest money from irresponsible corporations and their greedy businessmen.

3 out of 5 stars A good review of planning, law and sustainability........1998-10-09

The author has a great command of the planning profession as well as case law and its influence on growth patterns in the United States. As someone involved in land use and planning, but not a professional planner I found the book well written and easy to understand. I appreciate the authors argument and concern, however, I was left very disappointed with his concluding chapter as being too radical to every be taken seriously enough to be implemented. Maybe that's the point! We may not open our eyes to his thesis in time to sustain a sustainable future.

2 out of 5 stars Yikes - this looks daunting!.......2000-04-26

As a beginning learner, I expected this book to be a bit more structured vs diving right into complex sentences and phrases.

For me personally, this book would have been more helpful to focus on everyday usage in the office place, as opposed to focusing on a specfic business situation (financial turnaround).

For intermediate speakers already accustomed to the language, you may find this book useful. If you are just starting, look for something else to give you grounding before taking this book on. My two star rating is more my missed expectation and level of learning, vs what the book can deliver.

Mommy Guilt looks like it might be one of the new breed of literate mother essay books, the kind in which writers wittily divulge those moments in which they weren't, well, perfect moms. Rather than a collection of essays, Mommy Guilt is a self-help book that aims to guide the time-deprived and stressed mom into parenting with her heart rather than her children's soccer schedule. Some techniques - singing show tunes to your recalcitrant middle schooler, for instance - seem less likely than others, and the book finds its greatest successes in the more no-nonsense advice handed down by the three authors, all of whom have raised children of their own.

What makes Mommy Guiltinteresting on a social anthropology level is that it weaves in experiences of real moms who responded to the authors' survey on mothering issues at a range of age levels and situations. The survey questions are included in the back of the book, along with a helpful reference guide for situations ranging from how to handle tantrums in public to how to pick the right preschool. If the writing is sometimes precocious, its intent is to make mothers let go of the guilt that causes them to enjoy parenting less than they might otherwise, a sort of light-hearted literary jibe at how seriously moms can take the steady collection of dust bunnies and laundry piles over their children's (and their own) emotional well-being. One of the book's more unique features is a section on how to sustain a relationship with one's spouse, something that any parent, but particularly new or first-time parents, would find useful. - Megan Halverson

                        Book Description

Have you ever felt that to be a good parent, you need to be superhuman? Like millions of parents, you've got Mommy Guilt: a feeling that your family is suffering because you can't do everything.

The authors of Mommy Guilt wanted to know what causes these potentially overwhelming feelings. They performed a thorough survey of more than 1,300 parents, and the results point to many factors. Some of the most common include yelling, lack of family time, work choices, and tension over school and extracurricular issues. Mommy Guilt offers practical strategies for dealing with these issues and dozens of others, and presents seven straightforward principles for turning our hectic, stressed, guilt-inducing ways of life into more nurturing, healthful experiences for ourselves and our families.

I return to this book again and again. It's one of those books that will be a fixture on my bookshelf through all of my parenting years!

The book is easy and quick to read, and now that I have a better understanding of WHY I'm guilty, it's easier for me to just let go of the guilt altogether!

5 out of 5 stars Bidding Farewell to Guilty Mothering.......2006-02-22

This book does a great job of addressing the biggest situations in everyday life that tend to induce mommy-guilt - from mealtime to bedtime, and every single moment in between. Its advice is practical and grounded, delivered with good humor, but never dogmatic. And I love that the book's guilt-free principles can be used whether your child is a newborn or a teenager.

5 out of 5 stars A truly unique addition to your parenting resource library.......2006-01-14

"Mommy Guilt" takes an in-depth look at the emotion that plagues almost all mothers at least some of the time. I love the authors' combination of research (they surveyed over 1300 parents), anecdote, exploration of the concept of guilt, and down-to earth advice. They distinguish between usefull guilt that gets us to change our behavior when necessary, and free-floating guilt that serves no purpose. This dynamic team of authors has written a book that is comprehensive, informative, accessible, and reassuring. "Mommy Guilt" is a must-read for every parent.

The authors' reassuring tone, sound advice and dozens of real-life examples make Mommy Guilt a terrific resource for parents. Readers will learn how to banish those guilty feelings and start enjoying being a mom.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best resources in my library!.......2005-10-25

As a mom of twin preschoolers, I devour mommy books ~~ simply because there are days when it's so chaotic that I need to read to clear my head. This book ~~ highly recommended to my local chapter by the national chapter of Mothers & More ~~ is definitely a godsend. This book zeroes in exactly some of my worst guilts and these fabulous authors set the record straight!

Moms are often targeted by different sources to feel guilty ~~ if they spend more time cleaning the house than with the kids, they feel guilty that they're short-changing the kids. If they work outside the home, they feel guilty for not being there with their kids or they feel guilty that they're enjoying work. Moms feel guilty over disciplining their kids. Moms feel guilty, period. It must be one of those requirements of motherhood ~~ you will feel guilt. At one time or another.

These authors not only tell you to relax ~~ your feelings are valid ~~ but they also offer you suggestions that they have gleamed from their friends, experiences and from talking with other moms. This book is chock full of experiences ~~ from moms dealing with potty training, breast-feeding to raising teenagers, to having a blended family and so on. Their advice are practical and common sensical. They also interject humor as well ~~ life doesn't need to be so serious, so lighten up!

The seven principles of the Mommy-Guilt Free philosophy couldn't have come at a better time for me personally. They are really simple and I would list the basic principles here ~~ but you really need to get a copy of this book for yourself to read more in-depth of what these authors are talking about. It's that good!

Some of the basic principles are: You must be willing to let some things go. Parenting is not a competitive sport. Laugh alot especially with your children, and so on. (These are the ones that I need the most right now ~~ however, I plan to apply the other principles as needed!) This book isn't a book to read once ~~ this is a book that you probably will need to thumb through over and over again throughout your life with your children. This is also a book you might want to pass down to your children ~~ life is too short to live with guilt. And this is a pretty good start to work on getting rid of unnecessary guilt!

So, if anyone wants to borrow my copy, I will have to say, sorry. My copy is not for loan ~~ I know that I will need it over and over again. This is definitely a must-have for every mom (even dads have guilt and there is a section on that too!) ~~ even if you don't think you need it. It's just a great refresher on parenting!

This book kept me riveted from the first page to the last. Jacquelyn Mitchard's true story of infertility and adoption are so personal, that at times I felt guilty reading parts of it. She bares her soul and it makes for a fascinating read. Even if you've never had a problem getting pregnant, she writes about so many other facets of her life, marital trouble, step-daughter, relationships with her father and brother etc. I felt like I was reading someone's private journal. A very interesting journal. It was fascinating reading how Ms Mitchard reacted to events she couldn't control. Since this book was published very early in her career, I wondered if she regretted her candor, years after it was published.

"Jack" as she's called by her husband, is a one woman dynamo exposing her soul in the most private and gut-wrenching of times. Through her writing we see the world from the eyes of the bereaved - even though it was just a "fetus" that was lost - as one of her relatives callously put it. Grieving is grieving and Mitchard exposes the follies of both those who suffer, those who live with them and the industry built up around such people, as well as the heart-ache that is liberally spread around. Heart-ache that may be felt, but not necessarily talked about.

                        A real eye-opener.

After discovering "Dispatches From the Mother Ship" quite by accident (and loving it) I searched out any book by this author. I didn't expect a memoir that was so emotional and compelling. At times so desparate- but it has a hopeful ending.

The major facts of the Gettysburg campaign and battle are well known, but controversies about its outcome abound even today. No issue is more contested than that of the whereabouts of the dashing cavalryman, Maj. Gen. J. E. B. Stuart. Author Mark Nesbitt gives a detailed reconstruction of Stuart's actions during the campaign and presents the case that Stuart was not at fault for the loss: He was following orders to the best of his ability. The blame surrounding Stuart only surfaced after the war when, in an attempt to exonerate Lee, some veterans vilified Stuart unfairly. Unfortunately for the great cavalryman, that culpability has stuck. Nesbitt's findings challenge generations of Gettysburg historiography and are certain to fuel the controversy for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Arguement for Stuart!.......2007-07-14

I enjoyed the book and I think Nesbitt makes a great arguement for Stuart.
I have met Mark Nesbitt and I think he is a fine historian. I did not give the book 5 stars for a couple of reasons. I thought some of the information became redundant he seemed to repeat himself to a certain degree. Also I wish Nesbitt had provided more detailed maps and more maps in general!
Modern day photos of the battle areas being discussed would have been a nice bonus!
                                      Overall a great book!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent study.......2003-08-05

This book takes one of the most controversial actions in the greatest campaign of the Civil War and re-examines the original documents related to the controversy, at least insofar as they can be found. The thoughtful, reasoned analysis of Stuart's actions, his basis for them, and their ultimate effects on the outcome of the campaign, combine to produce a fresh book on the Gettysburg campaign.
Certainly it will not settle the controversy fully, but it is a welcome addition to the canon of literature on Gettysburg.

This is a book that I've somewhat dreaded reviewing. It's a little hard to know how to rate it, and it's hard to review it without going off onto my own interpretation of the topic. (Despite the temptation, I'm going to try and avoid doing that.)

Nesbitt's essential thesis is that the blame laid by some upon General Stuart for the defeat at Gettysburg is unfair. I agree with him. However, I'm not sure I don't think he's right for the wrong reasons.

Nesbitt proposes several beliefs: Stuart's absence brought on the battle; no cavalry was left to Lee; Stuart was "late" for the battle; Stuart wasn't following orders; Stuart was joyriding; and offers to prove them false one by one. He is more successful with some of these proofs than others. He spends much of the narrative on Stuart's orders. I'm not sure this was the best strategy. The orders were confusingly written, we may not have them all, and after the war they were variously interpreted. Harping on the orders and on Lee's aide, Marshall's, possible postwar dishonesty concerning them tends, I think, to weaken Nesbitt's thesis by taking time and attention away from the real weak points in the "Stuart was to blame" argument. He gets caught up in the morass and makes some confusing and contradictory statements himself. In his discussion of the orders he does establish to my satisfaction that Stuart was not outright disobeying, though other readers have disagreed.

Nesbitt is perhaps on better ground with his discussion of postwar events -- the canonization of Lee as part of Lost Cause ideology and the fact that Stuart, being dead and not having been a favorite of some major hagiographers, made an ideal victim. Mosby's refreshingly lucid comments serve Nesbitt well here.

Time is also given to an analysis of the cavalry's role during the battle and retreat. Nesbitt points out, very cogently, that Stuart left men behind watching the Federal army who were supposed to stay in contact with Lee, but he fails to explain why these men did not, apparently, do their duty. This would be a useful thing to know, as would the reason why much of the cavalry Lee did have was off with the Second Corps, thus out of touch with Lee--but not at Stuart's bidding. Also, though the accidental nature of Gettysburg and the fact that it wasn't seen as a "high-water mark" till after the war do receive mention, Nesbitt's argument might have been stronger, I think, had he focused more on those factors.

Some rather unusual photos grace this volume, including one in which Mosby looks startlingly like actor Kyle MacLachlan.

This book will be required reading for anyone interested in the subject, but I'm afraid it may intensify controversy rather than clarifying discussion.

                                              Book Description

Dubbed the "Bard of America's Bird-Watchers" by the Wall Street Journal, Pete Dunne knows birders and birding—instinctively and completely. He understands the compulsion that drives other birders to go out at first light, whatever the weather, for a chance to maybe, just maybe, glimpse that rare migrant that someone might have spotted in a patch of woods the day before yesterday. And yet, he also knows how . . . well . . . strange the birding obsession becomes when viewed through the eyes of a nonbirder. His dual perspective—totally engrossed in birding, yet still aware of the "odd birdness" of some birders—makes reading his essays a pure pleasure whether you pursue "the feather quest" or not.

This book collects forty-one of Dunne's recent essays, drawn from his columns in Living Bird, Wild Bird News, the New Jersey Sunday section of the New York Times, Birder's World, and other publications. Written with his signature wit and insight, they cover everything from a moment of awed communion with a Wandering Albatross ("the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen") to Dunne's imagined "perfect bird" ("The Perfect Bird is the size of a turkey, has the wingspan of an eagle, the legs of a crane, the feet of a moorhen, and the talons of a great horned owl. It eats kudzu, surplus zucchini, feral cats, and has been known to predate upon homeowners who fire up their lawn mowers before 7:00 A.M. on the weekend."). The title essay pays whimsical, yet heartfelt tribute to Dunne's mentor, the late birding legend Roger Tory Peterson.
