Book Description
What constitutes a high-rise building? A high-rise is, in fact, any building with more than 9 storeys and not just those striking skyscrapers which shape modern city skylines. In the past architects who designed such structures used to be the exception but in the last 10 years more and more architectural offices have begun to focus on this type of building. However, the sheer complexity of designing and planning the construction of a high-rise as opposed to other building types requires a wealth of specialized experience and expertise. The High-Rise Manual is the first comprehensive reference work on this subject. All relevant aspects of such an undertaking are examined in detail by some 24 specialist authors. Each step is extensively documented including the initial project planning, the building organisation, the laying of the foundations, the supporting structure, the building technology, the office design, and the Facility Management. Growth Management for a Sustainable Future: Ecological Sustainability as the New Growth Management Focus for the 21st Century
Gabor Zovanyi Manufacturer: Praeger Paperback ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0275973492 |
Book Description
Previous books on growth management in the United States favor balanced growth, which suggests that growth and environmental protection represent equally legitimate objectives. Taking issue with the balanced growth position, this book argues that further growth is unsustainable and that growth management must focus on ensuring ecological sustainability. The book opens with the arguments supporting current global limits to growth, and then shows that the growth management movement in the United States represents an institutionalized form of ongoing growth accommodation, which is incongruous with sustainable behavior. The book also documents the historical pro-growth tendency of the planning profession and contends that this bias is impeding the necessary transition to a sustainable future. In addition, it presents the standards courts use to decide the legality of growth management programs and suggests that those standards do not present insurmountable obstacles to stopping future growth. In conclusion, this book presents operational measures of ecological sustainability and argues that the growth imperative currently driving the growth management movement must be replaced by the imperative of ecological sustainability.Customer Reviews:

Yikes - this looks daunting!.......2000-04-26
For me personally, this book would have been more helpful to focus on everyday usage in the office place, as opposed to focusing on a specfic business situation (financial turnaround).
For intermediate speakers already accustomed to the language, you may find this book useful. If you are just starting, look for something else to give you grounding before taking this book on. My two star rating is more my missed expectation and level of learning, vs what the book can deliver.

Mommy Guilt looks like it might be one of the new breed of literate mother essay books, the kind in which writers wittily divulge those moments in which they weren't, well, perfect moms. Rather than a collection of essays, Mommy Guilt is a self-help book that aims to guide the time-deprived and stressed mom into parenting with her heart rather than her children's soccer schedule. Some techniques - singing show tunes to your recalcitrant middle schooler, for instance - seem less likely than others, and the book finds its greatest successes in the more no-nonsense advice handed down by the three authors, all of whom have raised children of their own. What makes Mommy Guiltinteresting on a social anthropology level is that it weaves in experiences of real moms who responded to the authors' survey on mothering issues at a range of age levels and situations. The survey questions are included in the back of the book, along with a helpful reference guide for situations ranging from how to handle tantrums in public to how to pick the right preschool. If the writing is sometimes precocious, its intent is to make mothers let go of the guilt that causes them to enjoy parenting less than they might otherwise, a sort of light-hearted literary jibe at how seriously moms can take the steady collection of dust bunnies and laundry piles over their children's (and their own) emotional well-being. One of the book's more unique features is a section on how to sustain a relationship with one's spouse, something that any parent, but particularly new or first-time parents, would find useful. - Megan Halverson
Book Description
Have you ever felt that to be a good parent, you need to be superhuman? Like millions of parents, you've got Mommy Guilt: a feeling that your family is suffering because you can't do everything. The authors of Mommy Guilt wanted to know what causes these potentially overwhelming feelings. They performed a thorough survey of more than 1,300 parents, and the results point to many factors. Some of the most common include yelling, lack of family time, work choices, and tension over school and extracurricular issues. Mommy Guilt offers practical strategies for dealing with these issues and dozens of others, and presents seven straightforward principles for turning our hectic, stressed, guilt-inducing ways of life into more nurturing, healthful experiences for ourselves and our families.

Saber & Scapegoat: J.E.B. Stuart and the Gettysburg Controversey
Mark Nesbitt Manufacturer: Stackpole Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0811731022 |
Book Description
The major facts of the Gettysburg campaign and battle are well known, but controversies about its outcome abound even today. No issue is more contested than that of the whereabouts of the dashing cavalryman, Maj. Gen. J. E. B. Stuart. Author Mark Nesbitt gives a detailed reconstruction of Stuart's actions during the campaign and presents the case that Stuart was not at fault for the loss: He was following orders to the best of his ability. The blame surrounding Stuart only surfaced after the war when, in an attempt to exonerate Lee, some veterans vilified Stuart unfairly. Unfortunately for the great cavalryman, that culpability has stuck. Nesbitt's findings challenge generations of Gettysburg historiography and are certain to fuel the controversy for years to come.Customer Reviews:
Very Good Arguement for Stuart!.......2007-07-14
An excellent study.......2003-08-05
Saber and Scapegoat.......2002-09-25
Nesbitt's essential thesis is that the blame laid by some upon General Stuart for the defeat at Gettysburg is unfair. I agree with him. However, I'm not sure I don't think he's right for the wrong reasons.
Nesbitt proposes several beliefs: Stuart's absence brought on the battle; no cavalry was left to Lee; Stuart was "late" for the battle; Stuart wasn't following orders; Stuart was joyriding; and offers to prove them false one by one. He is more successful with some of these proofs than others. He spends much of the narrative on Stuart's orders. I'm not sure this was the best strategy. The orders were confusingly written, we may not have them all, and after the war they were variously interpreted. Harping on the orders and on Lee's aide, Marshall's, possible postwar dishonesty concerning them tends, I think, to weaken Nesbitt's thesis by taking time and attention away from the real weak points in the "Stuart was to blame" argument. He gets caught up in the morass and makes some confusing and contradictory statements himself. In his discussion of the orders he does establish to my satisfaction that Stuart was not outright disobeying, though other readers have disagreed.
Nesbitt is perhaps on better ground with his discussion of postwar events -- the canonization of Lee as part of Lost Cause ideology and the fact that Stuart, being dead and not having been a favorite of some major hagiographers, made an ideal victim. Mosby's refreshingly lucid comments serve Nesbitt well here.
Time is also given to an analysis of the cavalry's role during the battle and retreat. Nesbitt points out, very cogently, that Stuart left men behind watching the Federal army who were supposed to stay in contact with Lee, but he fails to explain why these men did not, apparently, do their duty. This would be a useful thing to know, as would the reason why much of the cavalry Lee did have was off with the Second Corps, thus out of touch with Lee--but not at Stuart's bidding. Also, though the accidental nature of Gettysburg and the fact that it wasn't seen as a "high-water mark" till after the war do receive mention, Nesbitt's argument might have been stronger, I think, had he focused more on those factors.
Some rather unusual photos grace this volume, including one in which Mosby looks startlingly like actor Kyle MacLachlan.
This book will be required reading for anyone interested in the subject, but I'm afraid it may intensify controversy rather than clarifying discussion.

Golden Wings, and Other Stories About Birders and Birding
Pete Dunne Manufacturer: University of Texas Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0292716230 |
Book Description
Dubbed the "Bard of America's Bird-Watchers" by the Wall Street Journal, Pete Dunne knows birders and birdinginstinctively and completely. He understands the compulsion that drives other birders to go out at first light, whatever the weather, for a chance to maybe, just maybe, glimpse that rare migrant that someone might have spotted in a patch of woods the day before yesterday. And yet, he also knows how . . . well . . . strange the birding obsession becomes when viewed through the eyes of a nonbirder. His dual perspectivetotally engrossed in birding, yet still aware of the "odd birdness" of some birdersmakes reading his essays a pure pleasure whether you pursue "the feather quest" or not.
This book collects forty-one of Dunne's recent essays, drawn from his columns in Living Bird, Wild Bird News, the New Jersey Sunday section of the New York Times, Birder's World, and other publications. Written with his signature wit and insight, they cover everything from a moment of awed communion with a Wandering Albatross ("the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen") to Dunne's imagined "perfect bird" ("The Perfect Bird is the size of a turkey, has the wingspan of an eagle, the legs of a crane, the feet of a moorhen, and the talons of a great horned owl. It eats kudzu, surplus zucchini, feral cats, and has been known to predate upon homeowners who fire up their lawn mowers before 7:00 A.M. on the weekend."). The title essay pays whimsical, yet heartfelt tribute to Dunne's mentor, the late birding legend Roger Tory Peterson.
