In this complete reference manual, recognized experts provide state-of-the-art information and methodologies for the inspection, maintenance, and restoration of historic buildings of virtually every period, style, and material.

Each chapter opens with a general discussion of the facade material and the ways in which structural and decorative elements are vulnerable to an array of environmental forces. After a detailed investigation of tools and techniques for inspection, the text explores planning issues for the restoration or replacement of facade components. Special features include:

For architects, building contractors, and owners of historic buildings, Historic Building Facades clarifies procedures, helps identify sources of deterioration, and offers solutions to even the most difficult maintenance and rehabilitation problems. It is also an excellent reference for building preservationists, architectural historians, and students of building design and preservation.

                Book Description

                  Book Description

This study demonstrates that the World Bank is at the center of the major changes in global education in our time. Based on a detailed analysis of thousands of confidential World Bank documents, this book outlines the evolution of World Bank lending policies in education, and assesses the policy impact of the Bank's educational projects.

The financial power and influence of the World Bank have helped to shape the economic and social policies of many governments, including policies that affect education. The Bank has been an influential proponent of the rapid expansion of formal education systems around the world, and has financed much of that expansion. It has been instrumental in forging those policies that see education as a precursor to modernization, and has served as a major purveyor of Western ideas about how education and the economy are--or should be--related.

World Bank Financing of Education makes a unique contribution, and will be invaluable reading for those studying or working in educational policy in developing countries, international organizations and financial institutions, and aid agencies.

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The smart take on initiative .......2007-09-17

Corporate employees must contend with downsizing, scarce jobs and scarcer benefits. In today's virtual corporations, a handful of employees do the work that many people used to do. To survive, make yourself an irreplaceable employee. That's the short, sweet, familiar point (and the only message, given the book's brevity) that Bob Nelson conveys in this simple but clear manual for long-term employment survival. Take the initiative, assume responsibility, know your job better than anybody else and fulfill your supervisor's expectations - even the unspoken ones. Become indispensable: it's here in a nutshell. We find that Nelson provides valuable tips on being a proactive employee and, for fun, illustrates them with some bright little stories.

                    5 out of 5 stars Initiative + Timing = Promotion.......2003-07-18

This is a very easy to read book full of examples of how people were able to make headway on the corporate ladder by showing initiative, waiting until the timing was right, and even disobeying superiors.

Through a string of specific examples from which generalized ideas are formed, this book explains how you can be an empowered employee with a driving force that will not only bring you job satisfaction, but can help you turn even a doldrum job into an opportunity for success.

The ideas, such as "be a person that makes things happen" can apply to any job, you just have to think about how it can apply to you.

                    4 out of 5 stars Pro-active thinking!.......2003-02-03

Bob Nelson has assembled a quick reading book on popular business concepts and situations facing a regular employee. He offers suggestions on becoming more pro-active than re-active to situations that arise through out many different careers. Nelson also gives examples of true story scenarios in which a person took a chance or challenged an idea and was later promoted for it. He talks about successes and also failures in careers in which people either sat on the sidelines or got in the game. This book most can probably read in a day as it is under 100 pages and reads very fast. It has quick chapters and a lot of useful insight.

2 out of 5 stars Not so thrilled.......2002-05-17

I was a bit disappointed after reading the book because I thought the author was giving 'general advice' rather than 'specific tips'. I would rather recommend 'The Administrative Assistant' (Crisp Publications)

5 out of 5 stars Encouraging a good employee to be a great employee.......2002-01-23

Bob Nelson doesn't pull any punches, and he says what every employer has always wanted to say, but couldn't quite find the right words. I am purchasing a copy of this book for each of my departments. It will be required reading for all employees. It drives me crazy when an employee is asked to do something and the first thing out of his/her mouth is, "but I don't know how." Fine, you don't know how, but you are an intelligent human being whom I hired, and you can learn. I love the person who doesn't have a clue, but takes on the task, thinks things through, asks questions, and gets the job done. Stagnation is boring, and it's not long before it starts to stink. This books gives employees great ideas to keep from being anything but stagnate. If they work for me, they know actions speak louder than words, and the right actions will take them places. Employers, be sure to read the book. As a companion, read "First, Break All the Rules" by Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton, Ph.D. With these books, you will have the tools to make your organization soar.

Now in its third edition, Negotiating the Special Education Maze is one of the best tools available to parents and teachers for developing an effective education program for their child or student. Every step is explained, from eligibility and evaluation to the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and beyond. This edition covers changes in disability laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It reviews early intervention services for children from birth to age three, and for those who have young adults with special needs, it also covers transitioning out of school. AUTHOR BIO: Winifred G. Anderson, Stephen R. Chitwood, and Deidre Hayden all worked previously at the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC), a training and information center for families and professionals who work with children and youth with disabilities in Alexandria, Virginia. PEATC was founded by Anderson and Chitwood. The authors continue to work in the field of special education and the law.

3 out of 5 stars Not necessarily the Parents' Friend.......2005-01-21

This book gives a neutral overview of the IEP process and supplies you with a minimum of information necessary to participate in meetings. But it may not supply sufficient information to equip a student's advocates with the leverage to get mandated services. The IEP process can be quite adversarial, depending on the jurisdiction, with very substantial funds at stake in providing services. Teachers & other school district personnel may be under instructions NOT to give out information that will unlock services to parents; it can take knowing how to request services using the proper jargon, citing statutory provisions such as "AB3632" and "26.5" for mental health services in California, for instance. School District personnel may evince fear when hearing these requests posed with the proper jargon, in the IEP. Consult with student advocates, such as those searchable in California under the term "Developmental Disabilities Area Board". Professional advocates may accompany you to IEP meetings.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Helps Special Education Students Too.......2003-03-12

Although this book was written for parents, it provides a clear explanation of the steps to become eligible for special education services, developing an Individualized Education Plan, and making sure that services are received.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Go To An IEP Meeting Without It!.......2001-03-24

If you are the parent of a child with special needs, and she is a student n public school, be ready to do some big-time advocating to ensure that she gets the special ed. services she needs. As a special education teacher I am amazed at how little parents know about their rights under the IDEA '97 legislation, and how little they advocate for their child at IEP meetings.

This book is a good start to get you, as the parent-advocate, in the frame of mind you need to be in when "negotiating the special education maze." My brief experience in the field has taught me that the most frustrated parents are those that are the least informed about what their rights are. Like trading stocks on the stock market, operating within the criminal justice system, or living in a foreign culture, the domain of special education has a culture, and rules all its own. If the parent does not know how to "play the game," you will be rolled by school districts that pay a lot of lip-service to providing an "education for all," but in practice are only concerned about the "best and the brightest."

I would also highly recommend doing two things if you are a parent of a special needs child, and you are just about to enter "the maze;"

                      (1) I would look in your local phone directory for a special ed. advocacy group, or some type of parent group, where you can join with other parents and learn about the special ed. field, and what is available in your area. (2) I would also join the Council for Exceptional Children as they are an excellent source of special ed. info. re: legislation, parent rights, advocacy, etc. I hope that this review helps in inspiring you to become better informed about the "system" so that you can obtain the best for your child. I want to stress again how important it is to (a) become as informed as you can regarding your rights as a parent, and your child's rights to a free and appropriate public education as stipulated by federal legislation such as IDEA '97. One of the frustrations I have had as a special ed. teacher is seeing how much lip-service school districts pay to special needs children, but how little is done for them in actual practice. I call special education "the last bastion of discrimination in the public schools." I want to write a book about this some day and call it "Separate and Unequal." ;) And I also want to stress (b) how important it is to become actively involved in a local parent advocacy group. There is strength in numbers, and there are battle-scarred veterans of the special ed. wars who have had to go at it with recalcitrant school districts hammer-and-tong to get even the bare minimum services for their child. I don't mean to be "negative," but I know what I am talking about.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start.......2000-06-27

This book is a good place to start for parents or teachers who want general information on the Special Education process. Although it covers a wide range of topics, it gives only basic information, lacking the details that parents and teachers seek. Since I had already done quite a bit of research in this area, I was disappionted. The book was basically a review on information that I had already found. If you are looking for a place to start, this is a good book to get you going. If you have already looked into this area, then you may also find this book lacking.

5 out of 5 stars The MUST have reference for parents of a special ed child.......1998-08-24

~If for any reason your child is in or entering special education, this book is beyond value. It explains the processes involved, what the schools are and are not permitted to do, what they and you must do, to achieve~ This book gives you the base you need to fight back on behalf of your child's future. No parent facing a school's 'child study team' should be without this. You'll be amazed at the rights you and your child actual

4 out of 5 stars Guide for Bird Watchers who Travel.......2003-12-10

Birders (a.k.a. bird watchers) can approach their hobby several ways. There's the backyard birder who enjoys feeding and otherwise attracting birds to his/her backyard. Then there's the lister, who keeps a list of species seen (whether in a time period such as a year or in a lifetime) and is always trying to see the next new bird. I feel that among listers there are several types, some who chase the rare (pronounced "lost") birds that blunder to a "migrant trap" near the birders' home, and others who'd rather travel to where the birds should be. This book is for the later group.

There are quite a few bird finding books out there, many good but perhaps none of them perfect. Some of them give detailed lists of what can be seen at each location covered. This one does not. However, that's not necessarily a strong negative because some of the lists in the other books seem to list lots of rarities. If you follow the lists blindly, you may find yourself searching for rarities rather than what is common at that locale.

This book is first and foremost a book for daydreaming. Sure, the advice is practical and you get a good idea of what to expect at each location. But the scope of the chapters range from specific sanctuaries to countries. You may end up getting practical advice about an outstanding sanctuary not terribly far from you and start day dreaming about a trip to Kenya "someday".

If you are a bird watcher who likes to travel, you will probably enjoy this book very much. In fact, you don't need to be an expert birder to enjoy this book.
