Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Introduction To Rock Art.......2000-08-13
This book provides a wonderful overview of petroglyphs and pictographs in general, with the emphasis on the Northwestern states (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Western Montana) and British Columbia. There are images on nearly every page including black and white photos and drawing recreations. Many elements of rock art are described and defined. There is a time line illustrating eras from pit and groove to modern, and a brief description of what Native American Indians were doing during that time. There are also some quantitative charts of elements. This is a great book for anyone interested in Native Americans, Archaeology, Rock Art, or a great way to get interested.

Book Description
This book describes the transgression from city infirmaries from shelters for indigent towns people into centers of highly specialized medical care. Holland 's Golden Age of the arts was also a bright era for medical science. Public dissections in the anatomy theatre were a popular attraction, and visitors came from far and wide to view the wonderful anatomy collections of Frederik Ruysch. In the intervening 350 years, every aspect of medicine has changed. In Doctors of Amsterdam Annet Mooij describes the transformation of city infirmaries from shelters for indigent townspeople into centers of highly specialized medical care, of universities from seats of timeless general scholarship into institutions of science and specialization, and of medical research from improvised tests in private rooms into sophisticated experiments in hi-tech university laboratories. All this is set in the city of Amsterdam. Still, events in the Dutch capital cannot be seen in isolation from national and international developments, and these contextual factors receive ample attention. The result is a lively and informative picture of more than three centuries of medicine.

Book Description
Drawing upon the vast photo archives of the DeWitt Historical Society, this new edition dramatically juxtaposes old views of Ithaca architecture, parades, celebrations, and residential and shopping districts with shots taken in the very same locations today.
Customer Reviews:
fantastic.......2003-01-06
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of the Ithaca area. You can catch glimpses of Ithaca's glamorous movie history or heavy industrial past from almost any sidewalk in town. In my time at Cornell I was fascinated by what I saw, but so much has changed that I could not put all of the pieces together. This book solves that problem. On facing pages, the author contrasts both the modern view and a historic view from the same location, with comments about the origin and fate of structures.
For those of us who want to learn more about Ithaca's origins and history, this book is a must have. If a few copies were put in the Straight Hall browsing library, we would have a lot more Cornell students who appreciate Ithaca.
Ithaca: Then and Now..........2001-02-15
I greatly enjoied this book both for its useful insight into the city of Ithaca and community and its historical pictures with modern day representations. As a former student of Ithaca College, I recomend this book for anyone interested in discovering a hidden history of Ithaca that has been lost to the general public. Filled with historical facts and stories, the book does a wonderful job in repectfully paying omage to a city rich with historical status. A entertaining and informative book all around, a must for any history lover.

Book Description
Multilateral development banks (MDBs) are increasingly expected to address environmental issues in their economic development lending. Yet the banks have been accused of failing to implement their own environmental policies, thereby contributing to environmental degradation in borrowing countries. In this book Tamar Gutner analyzes the environmental policies of three MDBs: the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the European Investment Bank. She compares their performance in Central and Eastern Europe, where the need for economic and environmental reform has been particularly urgent, and where these MDBs are among the largest donors.
Gutner finds many obstacles to efforts to "green" the three banks, most notably a mismatch between the environmental mandates and existing patterns of institutional design and incentives. The depth and scope of the banks’ green activities reflect the degree of shareholder commitment to environmental issues and how demand-driven the MDB is designed to be. Surprisingly, the World Bank, the most scrutinized and criticized of the three MDBs, has been rather more responsive than its counterparts to its environmental mandate in the region.
The discussion is framed by larger explorations of the behavior of international organizations and the sources of their innovation and inertia in addressing new policy issues. Gutner demonstrates the need to examine the impact of different stages of the policy process on new mandates and to incorporate both political and institutional variables when developing theories about the behavior of international institutions.

Book Description
Despite all the high-tech advances of the last several years, one aspect of the work environment remains sadly inefficient: coworkers' ability to communicate well. Emails abound, teleconferences connect distant offices, and deals are closed in a matter of minutes. Yet most of the things people accomplish or don't depends on their ability to communicate with others. These 20 tips, designed to serve both employee and employer, include advice on how to offer critical feedback, understand the messages one receives, sort out motivations, offer praise, and keep people informed. Each suggestion is followed by an explanation along with examples. Brief exercises help readers assess their own communication skills.
Customer Reviews:
Small book, big help.......2004-03-16
This 2001 book is still fresh and useful. The tips are easy to understand, but often not easy to achieve. (Example: "Gossip carefully.")But Maisel doesn't abandon the reader. Every time the advice needs details, there they are. There are bulleted examples, 'clear' and 'unclear' examples, steps to practice and tips to polish the practice. The book is a slim 128 pages, and smaller than most paperbacks. Big print, too. The messages seem to be for a mix of people, and that's the only thing I'd change. Make one for managers, the others for up-and-comers. That way, there would be 20 more tips to lend employees a hand.
More effective ways of communicating on the job.......2001-06-08
In the vastly changing world of business the importance of good communication skills whether on or off line still reigns, and 20 Communication Tips At Work examines some of the more effective ways of communicating on the job. Easy tips range from decoding a message with help from office staff to composing more effective communications.

Customer Reviews:
Christian propaganda & paranoia.......2007-08-18
I enjoy watching and reading Christian propaganda for entertainment. Unfortunately, this book is very poorly written, lacks substance or real evidence to back up claims about "satanic influences, and is not even entertaining as a propaganda piece. The postive thing I can say about this book is that it proves in America, anyone with no research or writting skills CAN GET A BOOK PUBLISHED. It's even easier to get Christians to finance the publishing if you just find a scapegoat (this book being childhood favorite cartoons), mention satanic influence, and throw in some Bible verses.
No finer example of Christian paranoia.......2005-06-15
If you're looking for a study of how fundamentalist Christians believe that the whole world is against them and that Satan is in direct control of popular culture, look no farther than Satuday Morning Mind Control.
If you're looking for good information about popular TV shows in the late '80's/early '90's, look elsewhere.
God bless this book.......2002-07-30
Kids TV has gotten worse. Parents: do you ever watch this stuff. It's mind numbing at best, corrupting at worst. And anti-Christian to say the least. Read this book. And get your kids doing something constructive.
Simply a BAD book........2001-03-27
I first read this book several years ago, and it confused me. How could *anybody,* I thought at that time, write such obviously ill-researched and ill-prepared drivel and still be able to look themselves in the mirror? The author suggests that small children could not tell the difference between television and religion, owing to some EXTREMELY superficial resemblances between a TV show and a church service (this was the point I realized there was no way to take this man seriously). Now, I knew the difference between TV and religion at LEAST before the age of four, so there's a counterexample. I grew up on a steady diet of Bugs Bunny, Robotech and Voltron. Once I reached adulthood, I discovered Japanese animation. And I consider myself fairly well-adjusted.
The author manages to touch briefly on fundamentalist christian paranoia toward Dungeons & Dragons and other such "toys," but his main beef in this case is toward perceived satanic influences in the media. Not nearly funny enough to recommend as a cult classic the way "Dark Dungeons" is, but if you can enjoy bad fundie rants about pop culture, do check this one out. If such things get your ire up, AVOID.
One star out of five.

Book Description
This book provides the most concise, accessible account yet available of modern Western cultural and social explorations of other forms or aspects of life that are devalued or coded as unacceptable, even unthinkable, in the modern ethos. After discussing modernity as a cultural and political project associated with notions of 'progress' and the shaping of body experiences through the 'civilizing' of behaviour, the author describes how the body seeks to go beyond the conventional - and characteristically male-oriented - pieties of modern 'rationality' to uncover these 'other' dimensions, involving the carnivalesque, the 'primitive', madness, nature, sexuality and aspects of the feminine. These are shown to hold a powerful fascination for the modern imagination, and to provide potent resources for transgression, conflict and nostalgia. Indeed, the transgression of the precarious boundaries that define the modern identity, the exploration of the taboos that separate 'us' and 'them', the normal and the pathological, are revealed to be as central to the modern experience of otherness as the endless attempts to shore up and defend these boundaries.Transgressing the Modern will prove an invaluable guide to the roots of the contemporary experience of cultural crisis, and for situating current debates over the postcolonial and a possible shift into a 'postmodern' age of cyborgs, aliens and hybrids. The book is written in a lively and approachable style, yet does not shirk theoretical issues, and is ideal for students and researchers in cultural studies, sociology, and across the humanities and social sciences.

Customer Reviews:
Great waterfowl identification guide.......1999-10-27
"Waterfowl : An Identification Guide to the Ducks, Geese and Swans of the World" is a wonderful guide for waterfowl identification, with beautiful colored plates of all 155 species of ducks, geese, and swans. A really nice book for everyone who likes wild waterfowl. The only thing I miss are the screamers which are also a part of the anseriformes (waterfowl).
Poor reprint quality ruins a great series.......1999-01-28
Make a plate-by-plate comparison of the new Waterfowl or Shorebirds guides with the original hardcover editions and you'll see that the sofcover illustrations look like cheap color photocopies. All of the subtlety and detail that made the originals the best field guides of their kind has been lost. Save your money for the used bookstores.
Steve Madge delivers again.......1998-11-22
Maybe i'm a little biased but this is a great book. However trying to find a copy was something of a wild goose chase
Excellent for the birdwatcher or waterfowler.......1998-10-03
Waterfowl: An Identification Guide - This identification guide is part of a series of similar books each targeted at a particular family of birds such as shorebirds, seabirds, sparrows, etc. These guides are designed for the serious bird watcher, but the volume on waterfowl is an excellent reference for the waterfowler who wants to increase his knowledge and understanding of these wonderful birds. Most species are illustrated in juvenile, eclipse adult and breeding adult plumage for males (drakes) and females (hens). Range maps and detailed text descriptions are included for every species of waterfowl in the world. Descriptions include methods of distinguishing birds that are similar.
