For a century and a half, the North American landscape was marked by evidence of tremendous industrial activity, by artifacts such as railroad bridges, factories, grain silos, and hydroelectric dams. In the transformation to an information economy, that evidence increasingly takes the form of detritus, of rusting scrap and decaying structures. Writes French economic historian Louis Bergeron, "the line is quickly crossed between the living industrial landscape and the industrial wasteland, dramatic in its immobility, its abandonment, and its gradual degradation."

This sprawling and striking photographic essay, depicting railroad stations, shipyards, canals, steel mills, and other industrial centers, offers a catalog of all that is now giving way to commercial parks and residential subdivisions. Although Bergeron recognizes that the times change--and, indeed, that this industrial landscape is the result of many incremental additions and subtractions over the years--he urges that some of our industrial landscapes be preserved as museums and "heritage corridors." He adds that many other industrial structures lend themselves to "adaptive reuse," in which hotels, restaurants, and galleries might occupy former industrial space. Citing successful examples of this preservation, he remarks that the American public "is developing an attachment to and fondness toward industrial monuments and landscapes, whose significant contributions are beginning to be better understood and appreciated." A Distinctively Fascinating Book w/Evocative Photos.......2001-03-22

I spotted this book in a bookstore, but ordered it online. For anyone interested in American economic history in terms of how our nation evolved via manufacturing and early technology, this book is incredibly interesting. Its coffee table size makes it a bit cumbersome to read continuously. Nonetheless its text is well written.

The real winners here, however, are the wonderful black and white photos of railroad terminals, factory exteriors/machinery, dams, power plants, and allied structures that really capture the collaborative genius that designed and built American industry.

The combined effect of "Industry, Architecture and Engineering" is almost narcotic. I keep going back to look at the photos and marvel at them. That's a far cry from any other large book I've ever seen. It is a brilliantly conceived and produced work.

Cool, but a little bit extreme..........2006-05-24

If you like custom painting, you'll find several -other- nice books about the theme. This is not the only I've got about car painting and custom painting, but in fact, is not the one I like the most...

Even if it contains nice step-by-step procedures, and goes with most of the painting proceses you may want to know, is not a great font of inspiration -for me-. It is most like a airbrushing book, that goes even in painting things that I would never paint on cars... and really hate to see on cars...

Craig Fraser is surely a very good airbrush painter, but if you are looking for some custom painting, without getting your car out of mind, I'd suggest rather to buy "how to paint flames" or "pinstripping masters"... maybe also "advanced custom painting technics", but not this book.

All in all, it is not a bad book, is just not the kind of information I like to have on my library.

A very good book!.......2004-02-10

I've never airbrushed before I got this book, but I feel like I have a head-start after reading it. It explains things very well, like the may types of automotive paint, and demonstrates the use of stencils and freehand sheilds. He even has a computer that he can make designs with! I always thought everything was done freehand. He also explains and demonstrates how to highlight and very effective use of shading and shadows. He even shows how to do a carbon fiber effect. Very cool! I highly recommend this book. Thanks!

Cheap Tricks for Cheap!!!.......2001-08-04

This is one of the best books of it's kind! I absolutely love this book! I've been a fan of Craig Fraser and Jon Kosmoski for years, and they(mostly Craig) have done a wonderful job compiling information and demonstrating various techniques in the field of automotive airbrushing. Though focused mainly on the automotive genre, these techniques can be used in any field of airbrushing!! Craig is one of a kind, and he has been a tremendous mentor to many, and a terrific teacher to "airheads" everywhere. For the price of the book, you will get priceless information! It's well written, informative, and loaded with the coolest tips and tricks!!!

I am an Executive Assistant in a corporation and I am working on redoing the file management system for my department. I was hoping that this book would give me some good, new ideas for streamlining our system. What I found when I opened it, was information that seemed more suited for a remedial high school business course.

So, if you are in search of a book that will teach you how to alphabetize and similarly elementary concepts, this would be a great resource. Otherwise, skip it and find something more suitable for business professionals.

Even if you know absolutely nothing about filing and organization, you're still too advanced for this book. Okay, MAYBE if you really need someone to explain the difference between a takeout menu and the deed to your house, then just maybe this book is for you. It is basically a pamphlet stretched out to book length by adding things like word search puzzles, lessons on how to use your mouse and lots of empty space. There is no useful information on starting or maintaining even the simplest office or personal filing system

At Your Fingertips in the Office is a much better choice. (But really, just about anything would be)

Great book for Spanish speakers.......2005-01-16

If you speak Spanish and are looking for practical tips during your pregnancy from someone who's been there, this is THE book. At least I tried to make it so! It takes you all the way from before conception through to your child's second year. It tells you what to expect, not from a medical point of view, but from an emotional, even a hormonal standpoint. It makes you feel understood. It is realistic but funny, and very very helpful. Or so, I, as the author, believe!

B-29 Hunters of the JAAF.......2006-07-12

An excellent book detailing the troubles Japan experienced defending against the high-flying B-29's. Trying everything from dropping bombs upon the bomber formations to heavy cannon armament, the Japanese finally resorted to ramming tactics.
An "iffy" proposition at best and survival of the volunteer pilots was possible. At least two pilots were credited with two B-29's destroyed and survived the war. There is also a case of a B-29 surviving being rammed twice.
The color plates show a great many different Japanese Army aircraft that participated in this effort.
As a wargamer and modeller, I found this book one of my most useful.

Gift Horse.......2002-02-12

This book has some outstanding strong points. There's a fair overview of the B-29 bombing campaign as opposed by JAAF home defense interceptors. Problems faced by both sides in mounting effective air operations are made clear. And it must be appreciated that any solid historical information from the Japanese side (in English) is an accomplishment. This factor comes out in the stories of selected missions. In these, the heart of the text, the authors have pulled together a wondrous array of sources from both sides, to include commentary by combat participants. This excitement for an armchair historian is amplified by photo illustrations specific to the event discussed in the text. So on the same page opening, good reading becomes memorable by pertinent illustration, some of which are astounding. Hats off to the authors' research skills.

Now, why don't I rate the book 5 stars. It IS an unexpected gift of fine information. But I've got second thoughts. The title is "B-29 Hunters ..." and I'd expected more on total JAAF ops. However, info from the Japanese side heavily focusses on aerial rammings. (Where it can be learned that rammings could be suicidal, or skilled pilots could not only survive but sometimes return with their fighter plane!) As a result of this focus, for example, the relative importance of ramming tactics are not compared to conventional gunfire in terms of B-29s brought down. Readers do not get what might be expected from the title, broader coverage of the JAAF in home defense.

Then, as is typical with Osprey's Elite series, a goodly number of color art profiles are re-cycled from prior publications in the Ace series, in this case, virtually all relevant profiles from the JAAF Aces book. Of course, it was refreshing to see those specially created for this volume.

Also, while an attempt is made to convey good information in the art captions, I found some confusion. Specifically, one caption states the Ki 44 was "quite suited for attacking B-29s," another refers to reduced performance problems when combat loaded. Still in another, Ki 44s became "near useless." Meanwhile, two art profiles show Ki 44 ace planes with multiple B-29 kill markings.

That's why 4 stars. All in all, however, with so much good work by the authors, this one's a real keeper.

Birding in war zone.......2007-07-16

This started out as a soldiers blog, and has more of a travelogue feel, rather than a war correspondent feel of it. The author is most interesting when presenting his walks around the camp, and finding birds in back of the laundry camp and travels. And exotic birds they are: such as Squacco heron, Greater spotted eagle, Egyptian Vulture, purple swamphen, whiskered tern, and blue-checked bee-eater. What is missing however any introspection about the war, Sadam's effect on the environment, or contrast of being in a war zone and observing nature.

Enjoyed hearing about his birding experiences in Iraq.......2007-05-01

Being a bird enthusiast, AND having a son in the US Army inspired me to buy (and read) this book. I had originally bought it to give to my son (who enjoyed watching birds...mostly raptors....as a child), I decided to read it myself and was amazed at the species of birds this soldier was seeing over there. Sounds like (in addition to his mission) he did have some downtime and had some positive things to say about the region, which was nice. It has to be hard to be away from your family and friends for so long....and Jonathan found a way to stay busy and keep upbeat. Kudos to him, and God Bless our military!

Birding Babylon-Simple Beauty in Wartime.......2006-08-18

This is a small, beautiful book. The natural phenonomena and bird-life that Jonathan Trouern-Trend desribes with such simple elegance in Birding Babylon is both comforting and poignent as it all takes place in Iraq near the beginning of our most recent conflict there.

I salute Mr. Trouern-Trend, both as a fellow "birder" as well as a poet. His writing is spare and unembelished, yet the warm sentiment he awakens in the naturalist' heart is undeniable. Here, again, poignance was the feeling he inspired, as well as admiration for a job well-done.

I love this little book. I bought 3 more copies as soon as I read it to give to friends.

A nice perspective on a terrible war.......2006-06-12

Because I am a birder, a friend bought me this book. It is perfectly aimed, not a pure birding, and no ranting about the war. Shows the power of nature and appreciation of nature to put a lovely perspective on even the most ugliest of wars. I wanted to know what the birds he referred to looked like so am ordering the birds of the middle east. one might wish photos or more realistic drawing of the birds, but I think that would detract from the journal-like nature of this cute little book.

This book is great! Part birding journal, part soldier's diary, and fully a reminder that Iraq isn't just a place on a map or in the newspaper. It's a quick read and you really get the feeling that you are just reading the author's notebook that he had in his back pocket while on patrol--really interesting. There's also a list of the 122 species that he saw while in Iraq, which was very enlightening--it's not just a desolate war-torn area over there--there are real signs of life! And the book itself is a really pretty hardcover book; there are even illustrations of all the different birds he saw.
