Book Description

Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) was one of the most renowned design engineers of the 20th century. This volume, the second in Birkhäuser's 4-volume edition of Prouvé's Complete Works, covers the period between 1934 and 1944, including such significant works as the "semi-metal" Chair no. 4 and its variations, which went into serial production from 1935 onwards, office furniture for the Parisian Electricity Supply Works and seating for the lecture hall of the École des sciences politiques in Paris. In 1934 Prouvé's workshop commenced production of entirely pre-fabricated sheet metal buildings such as the Flying Club at Buc. One of the triumphs of this period is the Maison du Peuple communal hall in Clichy, an outstanding monument of functionalism and a "hymn to metal and folded sheet". This volume also includes texts of previously unpublished conversations with Prouvé about the Flying Club and Maison du Peuple.

4 out of 5 stars For the Prouve Completist.......2000-03-02

Despite the importance of his work, Prouve has largely been neglected in books about mid-century modern design. This book (along with the first and forthcoming volumes) offers a very detailed look at Prouve's designs and puts the evolution of his design and metal fabrication skills into perspective. This book shouldn't be missed by any collector of Prouve's work.

      4 out of 5 stars Harsh Reality.......2006-07-05

This book is an honest look into what goes on in a busy, public emergency room. It's filled with amazing black and white photography that captures so much emotion and drama. In between the pictures are candid interviews with the emergency room staff...their stories about the harsh reality they work in astonished me. This book is so much better than any medical TV show simply because everything in this book actually happened...and the true stories are better than anything I've ever seen on TV.

5 out of 5 stars True, candid, a real life glimpse of the EMS system ..........1999-12-24

The Knife and Gun Club gives a candid and uncensored look into Denver General Hospital's Emergency Room and Paramedic Division. Richards has captured the spirit of the personell of the Denver General ER. As an EMT trained at Denver General and the daughter of one of Denver General's first paramedics, I found this book very accurate and true to life. It spares no detail and gives the true flavor of one of the nations top trauma centers and emergency departments. If you have any interest in the emergency field, I suggest you read this book for a truthful look into an emergency room and the lives of the people who work in the emergency system. This book is fabulous, and very well written. Richards pulls the reader in to Denver General and all its supporting emergency systems. I have never read a better documentation or representation of the way emergency medicine in all its aspects truely is.

5 out of 5 stars An un-censored look into emergency medicine & EMS in Denver.......1999-01-16

Richard's provides an unbiased look into the world of emergency medicine at Denver General hospital and Denver Emergency Medical Services. This book couples full page black & white pictures with interviews with various health proffesionals. A true look at the events and emotions surrounding emergency care.

        Description:
The success of China's economic development has left deep marks on resource availability and quality. Some regions in China are relatively poor with regards to water resources. This problem is exacerbated by economic growth. Flourishing trade activities on both domestic and international levels have resulted in significant amounts of water withdrawal and water pollution. Hence the goal of this paper is to evaluate the current inter-regional trade structure and its effects on water consumption and pollution via 'virtual water flows'. Virtual water is the water embedded in products and used in the whole production chain, and that is traded between regions or exported to other countries. For this assessment of trade flows and effects on water resources, we have developed an extended regional input-output model for eight hydro-economic regions in China to account for virtual water flows between North and South China. The findings show that the current trade structure in China is not very favorable with regards to water resource allocation and efficiency. North China as a water scarce region virtually exports about 5% of its total available freshwater resources while accepting large amounts of wastewater for other regions' consumption. By contrast, South China a region with abundant water resources is virtually importing water from other regions while their imports are creating waste water polluting other regions' hydro-ecosystems.

          Description:
Resource consumption of the Chinese society from 1981 to 2001 is represented by ecological footprint (EF) as an aggregate indicator. The debate, advances and implications of EF are investigated in detail. EF intensity is also provided to depict the resource consumption level corresponding to unit economic output. The results show that the EF per capita always exceeded the biocapacity and the EF intensity increased steadily over the study period. In addition, sectoral analysis for each EF component is also conducted. The appropriation in the global ecological sense of Chinese society with the second largest energy consumption in the world is therefore quantified and evaluated.

            Description:
The paper presents a method that addresses the problem of the amount of green space required for the environment areas of lower biodiversity by the ecological element threshold method. The original habitat had been highly disturbed by human activities in most developing countries. Taking the population carrying capacity, the balance of carbon-oxygen, and the supply-demand equilibrium of water resource as a group of conjugate restriction factors of green space planning, it quantifies the total amount of green space required to keep the ecological system in balance for the town of Shaliuhe, Hebei Province as the case study. The results show that the main restrictive factor at Shaliuhe town is the imbalance between the supply and demand for the water resource, 89.34% of which is used in agriculture. Therefore, the effects of various ecological improvements are calculated for the years 2005, 2010 and 2015. This case study could be used as a model for the planning of other towns on the northeast China plain to improve the environment, ecology and sustainability. Similarly, the Chinese scenario might provide a useable reference to other developing countries.

This paper is the continuation of the fourth part on fishery and rangeland. The total resource inflow to the Chinese society from 1980 to 2002 is investigated in four parts published afore. The total resource energy input corresponds to GDP is presented in comparison with the purchasing power parity in this paper. The structure of the resource energy inflow is also outlined. Finally, a novel concept referred to as resource intensity is suggested to serve as a basic indicator to illustrate the real status of the economic development in China.

                  Book Description

This volume, which brings together papers from a seminar held in Beijing in 1996, contains contributions written by Chinese participants as well as by visiting experts from the West. The different experience of the several authors is represented in the unique balance of the book: all the Chinese contributions point out the importance of the environment in economic development, expressing a determination to measure effects as a means to the successful management of natural resources. They concentrate on rather specific issues within the constraints of the prevailing economic situation, where identification and asset pricing tend to be specified by administrative norms. Several of these papers contain interesting and useful statistical information. The papers by the visiting experts also stress the importance of taking account of environmental aspects in deriving indicators relating to economic development. All the papers, however, reveal that work in this area is still evolving very quickly, sometimes in unexpected directions. This particular juxtaposition of approaches is a valuable record of the situation at a particular point in time when concern about the environment in China is developing rapidly.

                          Book Description

This book examines the evolution of R&D risk-adjusted models, arguing that financial evaluation has progressively moving away from deterministic quantitative analysis, in favour of non-linear, stochastic algorithms. The relentless quest for capturing the value of Pharmaceutical Research will demand for a new emphasis on integration among disciplines and models. The application of risk adjusted evaluation models to earlier stages of the discovery process is an important area for further research and value creation.

                            Book Description

Beginning this year, federal payment recipients will receive their government benefits through electronic funds transfer (EFT) what most of us call direct deposit. Although cost-cutting is the driving force behind the move to a virtually all-electronic federal payment system, Michael Stegman believes the initiative has a far broader potential: to bring poor Americans into the banking mainstream.

In this book Stegman outlines how many families will enter the mainstream banking system through EFT 99, as the program is called. He explains in careful detail the thinking behind the shift to EFT and the implementation of the program this year. He also argues that, for maximum success, EFT '99 should be combined with a program of national Individual Development Accounts (IDAs), dedicated savings accounts for low-income people that can be used for purchasing a first home, acquiring more education or job training, or starting a small-business. Essentially, EFT '99 will bring people into the banking system, and IDAs will give them an incentive to use the system to its fullest in order to make their money work for them and their children.

There are other steps that the government can take to boost EFT's ability to help public aid recipients achieve self-sufficiency. It can: add a direct deposit option to state benefits payments programs; give banks significant additional Community Reinvestment Act Credit for establishing accounts for EFT recipients; and regulate fees for cashing government benefits and voluntary accounts so that people are not charged excessively for accessing their money.

This book demonstrates that with careful planning and a relatively small investment the government's EFT initiative can have a major payoff in real assets and improved prospects for those who have been, for far too long, on the fringes of the country's mainstream banking system.

I'm giving this book 5 stars because I find it a worthy topic and I agree with the fundamental concept of the book: that we should raise our children to have integrity, to be kind, caring and decent individuals. The book was written in a compassionate tone, in a narrative (no lists or bullets) with the use of many examples.

But forgive me ... if you are reading this book, you probably endorse the basic principle. So what is it that we are supposed to do as parents, as a society? I walked away pleased that the author had taken the time to cover this very valuable principle, but not as clear on what to do next that wasn't, well, fairly obvious. But still, the book was very grounding and much appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars A decent and caring person.......2003-10-30

I am sorry to see that this book is out-of-print. As an advice book for parents and for anyone who has anything to do with children it stands at the head of the pack. Unfortunately these days no awards are given for just being nice and schools no longer teach values, if they ever did. Furthermore, in our multicultural competitive environments there seems to be less of a consensus about what constitutes good, acceptable behavior. In some circumstances well brought up children may be disadvantaged in the schoolyard scene if they don't toughen up, or something of the sort. The book validates right motives and right values and encourages parents and others to make the case. The book is written by a rabbi but it isn't religious.

A mensch is a decent and caring person. There is no pattern or correct formula leading to the desired results. Only parents care about raising kind and courteous children. Our obsession with individualism and self-actualization may have detrimental effects on children. A person is not a mensch in isolation. Cheating in schools has become widespread because making it has crowded out other values. We should wonder why we are so obsessed with high achievement. It is forgotten that child rearing is really child loving. We should not be giving children the message that love is conditioned on accomplishments. Children want to be heard and understood. One cannot be an effective parent if one is frequently gone or uninvolved.

                                        Book Description

Rockets roar into space--bearing roughly half the world's commercial satellites--from the same South American coastal rainforest where convicts once did time on infamous Devil's Island. What makes Space in the Tropics enthralling is anthropologist Peter Redfield's ability to draw from these two disparate European projects in French Guiana a gleaming web of ideas about the intersections of nature and culture. In comparing the Franco-European Ariane rocket program with the earlier penal experiment, Redfield connects the myth of Robinson Crusoe, nineteenth-century prison reform, the Dreyfus Affair, tropical medicine, postwar exploration of outer space, satellite technology, development, and ecotourism with a focus on place, and the incorporation of this particular place into greater extended systems. Examining the wider context of the Ariane program, he argues that technology and nature must be understood within a greater ecology of displacement and makes a case for the importance of margins in understanding the trajectories of modern life.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A739803. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Preliminary performance characterization of a high current Cs-Ba tacitron has been completed. Characterization includes analysis of the effects of emitter temperature, cesium reservoir pressure, and barium reservoir pressure on the I-V performance of the device. In particular, these operating parameters' effects on the forward voltage drop and maximum conduction current are presented in detail. Preliminary grid controlled modulation and voltage hold off capabilities are also outlined. Analysis shows that the high current Cs-Ba tacitron performs similar to previously tested cylindrical and planar Cs-Ba tacitrons. Current densities of nearly 10 A/cm2 were consistently achieved with forward voltage drops of less than 2 V at conduction currents of greater than 250 A. Preliminary modulation data (low collector bias limited) show modulation frequencies of up to 12 kHz at current densities of about 3 A/cm2, voltage drops of less than 5 V, and conduction currents of up to 80 A. The device has demonstrated preliminary voltage hold-off of greater than approximately 125 V (power supply limited). These preliminary operating characteristics in conjunction with the tacitron's inherent tolerance of temperature and radiation make it a potential switching mechanism for not only space nuclear power applications, but for other terrestrial high temperature and/or high radiation applications.

This guide brings together, for the first time within a single volume, a comprehensive review of all the world's pheasants, partridges, quails, grouse, turkeys, guineafowl, buttonquails, sandgrouse, and the enigmatic Plains-wanderer--over 250 species in all. The group includes some of the world's most familiar and beautiful birds, such as the Indian peafowl and the stunning tragopans, as well as some of the rarest and most threatened. This book concentrates on detailed identification and distribution, but also highlights conservation issues where relevant. The seventy-two color plates, by leading bird illustrators, show male, female, juvenile, and subspecies plumages, and form the finest set of illustrations of these birds to date. There is also a color distribution map for each species.

Pheasants, Partridges, and Grouse is a landmark volume in the literature of this attractive and vulnerable group of birds.

If you desire more than the basics purchase Johnsgard's books or some other title that limits its treatment. If its the basics that you desire its worth the money.
