Book Description
Responding to those who argue that resources spent saving lives in impoverished and overpopulated regions are wasted, Klaus Leisinger and Karin Schmitt set forth the components of strategies that can bring down birth rates in an ethically acceptable way. They explain that development must:
- foster a political, legal, and economic environment that supports human development
- focus on the satisfaction of basic human needs
- improve the social status of women
All Our People provides an in-depth, balanced treatment of such factors as human consumption patterns, the ethical issues surrounding population policy, and the role of women in development issues. The authors consider the wide range of conditions necessary to mitigate problems associated with population growth and the environment, including reformed attitudes and behavior patterns among people in industrial countries as well as global changes in economic, social, and political structures.

Customer Reviews:
You've Got to Have A Sense of Humor About It . . ........2006-01-09
This "chunky" book (with cardboard pages, like the kind you'll find any 3-year old chewing on), is fabulous. You've got to have a sense of humor though. It's the kind of thing you give as a parting gift to a crappy boss -- or as a half-joke gift to a recent college grad. The info in it IS actually good, but it isn't comprehensive. I don't think it's meant to be. I must say that several of my friends and I have had a good laugh over this book, and we've gotten a little good advice from it too -- a combination which makes it worth every penny to me.
Not exactly what I expected.......2004-12-12
I purchased this book as a gift for my sister who is "making the transition from dorm room to board room" so to speak, so I thought this would be the perfect book for her. However, when it arrived in the mail I took a look at it and saw that it was not at all what I had envisioned. First of all, the book is a hardcover book with "hard" pages inside...or what they normally would call a "board book". It's a book I would normally think of purchasing for my two year old daughter. It's not a chapter book at all. It's very short- 23 pages to be exact! Since it was so close to Christmas time, I didn't know if I should go ahead and keep it and give it to my sister or return it to Amazon.com- so I decided to read it. (Believe me, it didn't take long.) Now I must admit, overall, the book has some really great advice about business etiquette. It's just, like I said, not what I expected. It's more of a book I would think to buy a 15-18 year old, not a 25 year old. If I had known this book had been so short and made of cardboard or whatever, I wouldn't have purchased it. However, after reading it I do admit that the advice is worthy. It's just a very short book for $9.95. Just wanted to warn everyone- be careful before you purchase this.

Importance of looking out for others........2004-06-15
One of the best things that a reader takes from this book is the importance of a company's core values. Not only is having core values important, but sticking to these valuse at all cost. Too often in business people are always looking out for number one, Dallen realized early on that when you look out for others you will win in the end. One of the best examples he relays is when he took over the Fairmonte Foods plant. He came across the union sturd who was a grumpy old lady. Rightly so, she had been burned by the management before and was not going to let it happen again. This did not stop Dallen, he constantly reached out to her on a daily basis. After awhile she warmed up to him and they became friends. This is the type of management which makes a company strive ahead. No wonder Merry Maids became the leader in the industry so quickly. His style of leadership reminds me of Servant Leadership, always putting others before yourself.
Honest example of how God uses and blesses people........2001-08-28
I know Dallen and his wife personally, and they were serving the Lord and helping people in their daily lives, before God blessed them with financial success. This is truly a heart warming testimony of a couple that places spiritual values above all else, and how their business success is only one facet of how they continue to help people.

Such a Helpful, Well-Written Book!.......2007-04-14
Gloria Gaither had a brilliant idea --- get celebrities talking about their own family histories, discovering lessons they'd learned from their parents. You'll find humorous, wise, heart-warming stories on every page --- and if you're like us, you won't be able to put this book down! The chapter by Christian comedian Stephen Hicks was worth the whole price of the book. Thank you Gloria for giving us this excellent book about wise parenting.

Book Description
In 1779, Sir Henry Clinton and more than eight thousand British troops left the waters of New York to try a new tack in the war against the American patriots--capturing the colonies' most important southern port. Clinton and his officers believed that the capture of Charleston, South Carolina, would change both the seat of the war and its character. The British were correct on both counts, but the effect of the charge was defeat. In this comprehensive study of the 1780 siege and surrender of Charleston, Carl P. Borick offers a full examination of the strategic and tactical elements of Clinton's operations.
Suggesting that scholars traditionally have underestimated its importance, Borick contends that the siege was one of the most wide-ranging, sophisticated, and critical campaigns of the war. While striking a devastating blow to American morale, it transformed the war in South Carolina from a conventional eighteenth-century conflict into a partisan war.
Borick examines the reasons for the shift in British strategy, the efforts of their army and navy to seize Charleston, and the difficulties the patriots faced as they defended the city. He analyzes the actions and decisions of key figures in the campaign including Benjamin Lincoln, William Moultrie, Sir Henry Clinton, Lord Charles Cornwallis, and Banastre Tarleton. Borick also delves into the effect of the campaign on South Carolina civilians. He suggests that while British leaders had expected to find multitudes of loyalist sympathizers in the south, the conduct of British soldiers and sailors there actually served to arouse more antipathy than allegiance.
Drawing on letters, journals, and other records kept by American, British, and Hessian participants, Borick relies on an impressive array of primary and secondary sources relating to the siege. He includes contemporaneous and modern maps that depict the British approach to the city and the complicated military operations that led to the patriots' greatest defeat of the American Revolution.
Customer Reviews:
You might be surprised what you don't know!.......2006-10-31
With only rare exceptions like Pearl Harbor, American military disasters are generally ignored - not commemorated and not studied. Before reading this book, I didn't know how little that I knew about this campaign. After a short re-cap of the war, the author briefly discusses a previous advance on Charleston from Georgia, which had been bluffed into retreat by an advance on the British rear. With hopes of loyalist support in the South, for 1780 Sir Henry Clinton mounted a major amphibious expedition from New York to the fourth largest city in the colonies, Charleston. The British landed in an unexpected area south of the city, in difficult terrain, but their advance was not contested. The naval aspect of the campaign was new to me, but vitally important. A substantial portion of the Continental Navy under Commodore Whipple was sent to defend Charleston, but Whipple failed to defend the bar at the harbor entrance, and unlike in 1776, the British then safely passed Ft Moultrie as they did not stop to engage the fort. With naval access to the harbor, the British could continue the land advance, despite the handicap of having almost no cavalry. After crossing the Ashley River, Clinton opened up siege lines opposite a formidable American line. Even then, additional American troops arrived by crossing the Cooper River. Although the Royal Navy never closed off the American retreat across the Cooper River, Clinton sent a detachment across which eventually captured the area north of the harbor, sealing the fate of the American garrison. Because of civilian influence, Benjamin Lincoln, the American commander had remained in the city until it was too late. The surrender was the greatest American disaster of the war and could easily have lost them the South. But British treatment of civilians, combined with a rumored smallpox epidemic which had kept militia out of Charleston, kept American hopes alive.
Great Book on the Revolution in the South.......2006-10-27
Borick provides a great understanding the siege of Charleston. The importance of this battle has often gone unacknowledged by major historians. We hear lots about Valley Forge and the engagements in the North but most forget that the final two-thirds of the Revolution were fought in the South. Also we forget that Charleston was the equivalent of New York City or Philadelphia for the southern colonies.
While Borick's writing is not the most exciting there is certain energy in his description of the siege and battles leading up to it. Great descriptions of the engagements and style of combat help the reader see the difference between battles in the South from those in the North.
Overall, this book is a great historical work. It provides the reader with a good understanding of how the battle unfolded and the situation leading up the battle. Borick provides good descriptions of the major players as well. Finally, Charleston is a really great city with lots of great history, culture and architecture. Also Marion Square Park (it's down the block from the Charleston Museum on Meeting Street) is a lot of fun in the spring and summer months.
Fiar and intelligent.......2004-10-06
This book is an excellent recounting of the campaign leading up to and including the siege of Charleston and all the operations that were related to or took place during it.
He also gives excellent details of the important people involved on a need to know basis. His style reminds me of Peter Cozzins, the noted Civil WAR author, back when my interest was that conflict.
His order of battle that breaks down the combatants to a regimental level is outstanding and something most revolutionary war campaign books do not have and should be ashamed to not have them.
If i could make one complaint about this fairly told history it would be that there is just not enough flash in it. Some more humor or something to spruce up the researched details would be appreciated. However, this is nitpicking. The book is excellent and is the best about this turning point of the war.
- Dull Thesis Work -.......2004-05-06
Given the lack of anything else in print on this subject, Mr. Borick is to be commended for attempting to tell the story, but his writing is so dull and there are so many unfortunate repetitions of earlier stated statistics and trivial events, presumably employed to flesh out the dryness of the text with an illusion of detail, that the reader is left with the impression that the author would have been well served had a competent editor taken the author in hand. This is the driest of thesis work. The author's utter failure to organize the material in a detailed chronological sequence, rather than in the most general terms, is profoundly irksome, given the profusion of journals, diaries, orderly books, pension and state records available to scholars. Especially annoying, given the author's proximity to the study area, is the lack of adequate topologic information. There is nothing here to help a modern visitor ascertain the precise location of any of the sites mentioned, not even the locations of important river crossings or the HQs of the primary commanders. In the end the reader has the impression that Borick employed already published primary sources contained in Uhlendorf's 'Siege of Charles Town,' the Clinton and Lincoln papers, and then relied on secondary sources - there is very little else to be found here. The reader suffers from the lack of a mise-en-scene. We learn nothing about fire-fighting methods, the soil conditions, the source of the bricks that lined the key American redoubt, or the fact that the south end of the town was extremely heavily fortified. How were the Americans supplied. What did troops eat? Where did the officers sleep? Unforgiveable is the lack of an order of battle listing at the participating regimental units and commanders. There is little shift given to civilian perspectives (apart from Gadsden). Borick fails to provide any insights into the milieu of the general staffs and government officials or background biographical info. He pays little or no attention to the plight of the American prisoners after the capture of the city & their sufferings in the prison ships into which they were consigned. The bibliography is spotty. This is a flawed military history little better than other recent potted histories of the Southern theatre of operations, such as Pancake's 'This Destructive War.' It is a pity that this book constitutes the sole recounting of the only successful British siege operation undertaken in America, receives such lackluster treatment. Presumably the author's duties at the Charleston Museum limited his ability to dig deeper. But worse than the limitations of the history as such, is the banality of Mr. Borick's prose - no sense of apprehension or excitement is generated - it surely isn't to be derived from the dull repetition of facts. The largest military operation ever undertaken in the Carolinas save for Sherman's march upcountry in 1865 is worthy of a better recounting. It's a Charles Town tale that has yet to find a talented story-teller -
Superb!.......2003-11-19
I have a good working knowledge of the Civil War in Charleston but knew next to nothing about the Rev War and Charleston. This book is an excellent account of the fighting around and for that city.
I particularly enjoyed the personal stories of individuals involved. The author also gives the present day locations of key events, as a frequent visitor to Charleston I found this very valuable.
Suffice to say I strongly recommend this book, you will not be disappointed!

Book Description
This is a book about a box that contained the world. The box was the Picture Academy for the Young, a popular encyclopedia in pictures invented by preacher-turned-publisher Johann Siegmund Stoy in eighteenth-century Germany. Children were expected to cut out the pictures from the Academy, glue them onto cards, and arrange those cards in ordered compartments—the whole world filed in a box of images.
As Anke te Heesen demonstrates, Stoy and his world in a box epitomized the Enlightenment concern with the creation and maintenance of an appropriate moral, intellectual, and social order. The box, and its images from nature, myth, and biblical history, were intended to teach children how to collect, store, and order knowledge. te Heesen compares the Academy with other aspects of Enlightenment material culture, such as commercial warehouses and natural history cabinets, to show how the kinds of collecting and ordering practices taught by the Academy shaped both the developing middle class in Germany and Enlightenment thought. The World in a Box, illustrated with a multitude of images of and from Stoy's Academy, offers a glimpse into a time when it was believed that knowledge could be contained and controlled.

The contributions in this volume offer the first comprehensive effort to describe and analyse the collection, classification, presentation and methodology of information in the knowledge society of mediæval Islam in the disciplines of religious and legal learning, as well as the rational sciences of Hellenistic origin - philosophy, mathematical and medical sciences.
The volume begins with a general discussion of the concept of encyclopædia. Successive chapters explore the bases of authority in the institutions of religion and law; biographical literature and handbooks of law; compendia of scientific and philosophical learning based on Iranian and Greek sources; and the more specialised expositions of mathematics and philosophy. The special character of Muslim institutions, their teaching traditions and syllabi is also put into perspective.
This is a reference work for the principal genres of `enyclopædic' outlines and manuals - biography, legal handbooks, historiography of knowledge transmission, cosmography, and the philosophical sciences - and a major contribution to the literary and intellectual history of scholarly writing in the pre-modern Islamic world.

Book Description
This essay connects the birds of the Pacific shoreline, where I live, with the birds in the magnificent drawings and writings of John James Audubon, the nineteenth-century American artist and naturalist. I was watching the shoreline birds every day as I wrote a new biography of Audubon-the birds wheeling overhead to inland waters after they had fed at the shore, Audubon wheeling through his amazing life. The birds seemed to me auguries, as they had seemed to Audubon. But auguries of what? You may find your own answer to that mystery in this brief exploration.

Fascinating.......2006-02-23
Nature, birds have not been part of my reading interests, but Rhodes almost convinces me to read Audubon, and perhaps books about him, beginning with Rhodes', when published. I might try to find out why exactly the passenger pigeon went from 3 billion birds, one-third of all the birds in America, as Rhodes reports, to zero. They had no instinct for self-preservation? Their genes were dependent only on sheer numbers? Why weren't there many more predators of the air? Which would make the pigeons more alert to dangers from all quarters. No doubt the answers are easily available.
