Must Reading for Asilomar Visitors .......2007-06-02
Russell Quacchia, long-time Bay Area architect and active member of the American Society for Aesthetics, has produced a remarkable book on Julia Morgan's Asilomar campus. The previous Amazon reviewer must not have actually read the book as it contains orginal research (for example from Special Collections at the Kennedy Library at Cal Poly) as well as excellent background information on Morgan's life, the Arts and Crafts Movement in California, the histories of Pacific Grove and Asilomar, and a comparison between Asilomar and Morgan's other major work, the Hearst Castle at San Simeon. The last two chapters go into issues of aesthetics, making us aware of the ways in which Morgan anticipated our contemporary interest in site-specificity. Her architectural work at Asilomar is noteworthy for its emphasis on natural materials. Her architectural style was eclectic, but often, as at Asilomar, she followed the Arts and Crafts style of her mentor, Bernard Maybeck. Quacchia is especially insightful in his comment that Morgan sought a flexible balance between rigorous symmetry in building facades and casual asymmetry in the pathways she laid out between buildings. Each of her buildings, as Quacchia observes, was built to have its own feeling, to express a personality. As Quacchia writes, "In arranging buildings at Asilomar, Julia Morgan actively looked after the logistical needs as well as the social and environmental implications" of her work. The book is also well-illustrated with historical photographs. The bibliography is fine, but at eight pages, could hardly be said to form the bulk of the book, contrary again to the previous reviewer.
Please, Don't Waste your Time and Money.......2006-05-16
I was looking forward to reading a this book but was quickly disappointed.
I don't think Mr. Quacchia took much time to put together this book. The information is ALL second and third hand. The entire book is other writers accounts and information. The book is mostly a bibliography. Mr. Quacchia put a few narratives between each bit of information but he or his editors might want to use spell and grammar check next time. A college writing course might also be helpful.
I guess anyone can write a book if they do alittle research.
My copy of the book was not put together very well. Many of the pages were either omitted or put in after the index.
Please, think twice about reading this trash. That is where my book is now.

Book Description
Rural development is now considered almost synonymous with involvement in market exchange. When market and institutional failures prevail, however, rural communities increasingly rely on local institutional or contractual arrangements to guarantee their livelihoods. This book offers a comprehensive review of the debate on the importance of "real markets" in the Central American rural development process.

Customer Reviews:
update.......2001-04-30
I didn't cover enough in the other review I wrote. The book also gives great project ideas in using scrap materials, weaving, and the like to adorn clothing, bedding, etc., along with detailed instructions. It really covers a lot.
Great for beginner or good refresher.......2001-04-25
I am a beginner in sewing so I found this book extremely helpful. It has a lot of nice color pictures and diagrams that show how to make different kinds of stitches, like french knots and silk ribbon roses. It also shows how to use a sewing machine to make the same stitches, if you do not sew by hand. I think that the more experienced sewing person may not find much that they haven't seen before, but again, if you are new at this like me, it is worth the $4.99 investment!
Customer Reviews:
A lackluster book..........2000-12-22
In attempting to condense into one book what could cover volumes, the author has produced a book that consists primarily of widely known and uninteresting facts and theories. Though it has some interesting points, there are a number of better books available on WWII German military history. Overall, this book is a waste of time and money.
A really lackluster book..........2000-12-22
While providing some interesting points, the bulk of this book is merely re-hashed, widely known facts. Really a basic overview of WWII German military history. Not worth the time to read. Oddly, the edition I own doesn't even contain footnotes.
A Must Read for WWII History Buffs.......2000-10-28
This was a very well written book concerning the "behind the scenes" of Germany during the Nazi era. This book is actually a series of articles about a variety of topics dealing with the German war machine. It covers technology (uboats, rocket program, jet aircraft, etc), mini-biographies of all the key German generals (Rommel, Rundstedt, Guderian, etc) as well overviews of the various campaigns (Barbarosa, N Africa, Italy, France(1940 & 1944), etc).
This book would make an excellent addition to any WWII history fan's library as a superb supplement. It is not a book for those learning about WWII for the first time, but a great work for those who already know basic WWII history.
Great book about a great war.......1999-02-08
This was a really great book to those people, like me, who can't read enough about the second world war. I really enjoyed this book because the author (chant)has written very close to the truth about the war, especially the limitations of the german industry. This has gone practically unnoticed by so many books, that people in general fail to grasp the enormous problems the german armed forces faced. It also gives some great insights in why the german generals were so much better than its allied counterparts. A great book to read and I recommend it deeply.

Customer Reviews:
Spectacular Nature Writing.......2002-02-01
Newbery Medal-winning naturalist and acclaimed author Jean Craighead George wrote a series of stories in the late 1960's entitled The Thirteen Moons. Each of the thirteen books focused on a different wild animal struggling to survive in a different month of the year and a different part of the United States. The books were: THE MOON OF THE ALLIGATORS, BEARS, CHICKAREES, DEER, FOX PUPS, MOLES, MONARCH BUTTERFLIES, MOUNTAIN LIONS, OWLS, SALAMANDERS, WILD PIGS, WINTER BIRD, and GRAY WOLVES (see my review of these books under THE MOON OF THE OWLS). They had simple black-and-white drawings for illustrations and went out of print. Then in the early nineties the books were republished in handsome hardcover versions, with spectacular full-color paintings to complement Ms. George's original writing. Sadly, these books again went out of print. But now the thirteen books have been republished! They have been condensed into four paperbacks that revolve around the different seasons; AUTUMN MOON and WINTER MOON have already come out, SPRING and SUMMER MOON will be out in spring of 2002. At last this enchanting nature writing has been made easily available. The books are sure to be enjoyed by any person, young or old, who appreciates the natural world, its seasons, and its creatures. WINTER MOON features four stories--THE MOON OF THE WINTER BIRD (December), MOLES (December-January), OWLS (January), and BEARS (February). They are captivating and enjoyable, and very descriptive. Each one resonates with the kind of chilly coziness, combined with a sense of gloom and antagonism, that comes in winter time. You will shiver with the little song sparrow under the December moon; find your way through the underground darkness of a mole's lair; fly with the great horned owl through the Catskill Mountains; and wait for winter to be over with the hibernating black bear. Ms. George's words are lively and interesting and will draw you right into the stories. Also, some of the paintings from the early 90's versions of the books have been reproduced; however, they are not as fine quality to portray the scenes as wonderfully as they did in the out-of-print hardcover versions. Still, it is nice that they were included in the new paperback books. The colors are rich and accurate; I wish that more had been included. Jean Craighead George has written almost 100 books for young naturalists, among them JULIE OF THE WOLVES, MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN, the ONE DAY. . .series, and the ECO-MYSTERIES, so check these out as well. Also, musician Chris Kubie has released a spellbinding CD of the Thirteen Moons entitled MUSIC OF THE THIRTEEN MOONS. Read along with the music and you're sure to find a very enjoyable reading experience.
Book Description
Anxious for summer to return after a long, snowy winter, a girl learns from her grandfather that she has to wait for the magical night of the Goose Moon.

Connecting to the seasons.......2007-04-06
This would be a terrific book to use in a classroom unit on seasons before the use of calendars, telling the time of year with the signs from nature. Team it up with Thirteen Moons on Turtles Back (Joe Bruchac) and you have a winning combination for grades 1-5.
A thoroughly entertaining, heartfelt picturebook story.......2004-05-19
Imaginatively written by Carolyn Arden and beautifully illusrated by Jim Postier, Goose Moon is the highly recommended thoroughly entertaining, heartfelt picturebook story of a young girl and her adventures on Grandfather's farm over the seasons.
a warmly reassuring story.......2004-04-26
Goose Moon is a great illustration that warm and comforting literature can still be written for children today. The bond between Grandfather and granddaughter is realistic and the anticipation and wonder felt as one reads the story and takes in the illustrations.
The story and the depiction of it blend beautifully. A true keeper for any child's library.
