2 out of 5 stars All About The Authors.......2005-10-26

There are some ideas in the book. BUT it is a chronology of the two artists who wrote it more than anything else. The designs were crowded and uninspired I thought. Pictures offered little in the way of ideas - just a mess from their own activities.

      Product Description

This is an 11.2"x8.8" hard cover book with blue boards having gilt lettering along the spine. Illustrated DJ has a country-style ceramic table setting showing pieces with an animal design (cat, rooster, rabbit..). The large yellow rectangle at the top/front of DJ has blue lettering, as does the spine. 160 pages. From Library Journal English artists specializing in custom-made decorative ceramics for the home, the author present dishes, tiles, and other works that are bright and colorful, making use of such traditional techniques as sponging and sgraffito to create a modern "pop" style of animal and flower designs. Here they discuss molding, glazing, and firing in some detail, but their primary emphasis is on decorating techniques. The color illustrations, many of which show finished pieces in room settings in the authors' French cottage, are excellent. This is a good source of ideas for persons who decorate ceramic ware as a hobby as well as for those who are studio artists. Recommended for public library larger craft collections and other decorative arts collections.?Constance Ashmore Fairchild, formerly with Univ. of Illinois Lib., Urbana-Champaign Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

            Book Description

An evaluation of the use of water by the riparian Central Asian states, with a primary focus on Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The paper discusses the basin's water resource geography along with other critical water issues including irrigated agriculture, the Aral Sea problem, water sharing among the basin states, national water politics, and the future of water management. These complicated management issues are central to understanding and tackling the environmental and agricultural challenges confronting Central Asia, and also have the potential to generate conflicts both within and between states.

                Book Description

These studies of the cost of capital will inspire and guide policy-makers who share the goal of making the allocation of capital in a market economy more efficient.

Volume 2 is devoted to the cost of capital approach to tax policy. This approach has supplied an important intellectual impetus for reforms of capital income taxation in the United States and around the world. Widespread applications of the cost of capital and the closely related concept of the marginal effective tax rate are due to the fact that these concepts facilitate the representation of economically relevant features of complex tax statutes in a highly succinct form.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-09-03

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

                      My favorite chapters were:

                      1. Initial business concerns
                      2. Your business' structure
                      3. Business start-up details
                      5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
                      7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
                      8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 50 versions of this book sold; the only state I haven't found a copy for is Montana. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

                      1 out of 5 stars Just Awful!.......2005-07-19

These folks seem to have cobbled together some VERY basic small business articles and filled in the blanks with the words "in Hawaii". It is telling that no one would take credit for actually authoring this poor excuse for an entrepreneurial blueprint. All of this information, especially regarding Hawaii-specific laws, organizations and local conditions can readily be found on the Net - much more current and certainly more interestingly presented. Nothing Smart about this boring brick; save your money.

                              Book Description

On the night of 13-14 February, 796 Lancasters and 9 Mosquitoes of RAF Bomber Command, dropped 1,478 tons of high explosive and 1,182 tons of incendiaries on the city. A firestorm developed, which led to large areas of the city being burned out. At the time of the attack, Dresden was crowded with refugees fleeing the advancing Soviet Army resulting in between 40,000 and 50,000 casualties. On the morning of the 14th a second attack was carried out by the United States Army Air Force, with two further US attacks mounted on February 15th and on March 2nd, 1945. Why, so close to the end of the war, should a beautiful city, a center for fine art and porcelain, with arguably no tactical significance, have been so completely obliterated by the British & US Air Forces? Was Dresden a legitimate target or was it merely a matter that the British and Americans wanted to demonstrate to the advancing Russians the power of their combined air forces? Target Dresden chronicles the development of bombing from the earliest days through the Zeppelin and Gotha raids of the First World War to the development of strategic bombing of WWII and examines how it affected post war thinking. Packed with facts Target Dresden gives the story behind the raids which were the most controversial conventional bombing attacks of World War Two.

It's hard to believe this thoughtful memoir is Anne Batterson's first book, so elegantly does she weave a chronicle of her five-week trip across America to observe migratory birds with recollections of the key people and moments in her life. Batterson was 56 when she took off from Connecticut on the journey she knew was quixotic, designed to stem her rising panic at her beloved second husband's talk of leaving his post as an Episcopalian minister. "Retirement, he would try out over the dinner table," she writes. "More time. Enough time... What I heard was: Hurry. Hurry. There's no time." Though she had behind her decades of adventure as a skydiver, pilot, and mountain trekker, Batterson still felt a keen need for risk-taking and solitude. With the blessings of her understanding spouse, David, she packed up her VW bus camper and took off. The present-tense narrative of her travels has a marvelous immediacy, from the lyrical (yet often slyly funny) descriptions of birdwatching, to emotional accounts of visits, to friends suffering their own midlife crises. Her past comes vibrantly to life in bravura passages capturing the thrill of skydiving (especially a terrifying jump in the middle of a lightning storm) and the pain of her failed first marriage to a flight instructor "who taught me how to loop the loop. Boy did he ever." She comes home to David and the knowledge that her wanderlust makes her who she is. The book closes with Batterson admitting, "I've always wanted to go above the Arctic Circle," as David laughs and she kisses the palm of his hand, murmuring, "God, I'm lucky." Readers will feel just as lucky to have shared the experiences related here with such tenderness and hard-won wisdom. --Wendy Smith

                                      Book Description

Set against a spontaneous cross-country road trip following the migrating birds, this passionate, lyrical memoir is one woman's reflections on midlife, her important personal relationships, her kaleidoscopic past, and her uncertain future.

To fifty-six-year-old Anne Batterson, a woman whose life has been filled with adventure -- as a commercial pilot, an international skydiving champion, a trekking guide in Nepal -- her husband's decision to retire felt like a death sentence. Yearning for some way to reconcile herself to the future that was rapidly unfolding before her, she packed up her VW camper and hit the road with maps, bird guides, and little else except the desire to follow the fall migration and the bone-deep hunch that birds had something important to teach her.

In this beautifully written narrative of that extraordinary trip, Batterson writes movingly not only about her experiences with the birds but also about the people she loves, has lost, and connects with along the way. Events from the present trigger vivid stories from the past. In the chapter "The Journey Within the Journey," a long, lonely night in a deserted campground in Virginia conjures up the ghosts of a desperate solo road trip she made when she was twenty-one. A towering cumulus cloud in Illinois brings back a breathtaking free fall into a similar cloud in "My Time as a Bird." An encounter with a great blue heron summons a compelling account of her mother's last afternoon in the world. "Bears in the Woods" describes a run-in with two Deliverance-type men in West Virginia, which brings back the murder of a dear friend in the woods of Connecticut.

By the end of the journey, the ghosts of the past, like the author herself, have become part of a more fluid, more spiritual reality -- wild and spare and elegant and timeless -- one that is always out there, "quickening on the far side of reality."

A unique mix of memoir and nature writing, The Black Swan is a charming story of a woman's odyssey.

For fifty-six-year-old Anne Batterson, a woman whose life has been filled with adventure -- as a pilot, a trekking guide in Nepal, an international skydiving champion, a wife and mother -- retirement was a depressing acknowledgement of advancing years. Though her life and marriage were still fulfilling, Anne yearned for some way of reconciling herself to the future. So she packed up her VW camper and hit the road with maps, bird guides, and little else in the way of a plan except to follow migrating birds. The Black Swan is a narrative of that extraordinary trip. In addition to beautifully describing bird migration across the United States, Batterson writes movingly about her children, her husband, her parents, and her own remarkable achievements. And it is through this spiritual journey, combined with the arduous but rewarding physical journey across the country, that Anne Batterson finds self-awareness and ultimately, peace. A unique mix of memoir and nature writing, The Black Swan is a lovely story of a woman's coming of age.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and couragous.......2003-01-23

I met Anne at a CT Authors and Publishers meeting where she was the guest speaker. She kept us enthralled with her tales and adventures in her journey to be published after she had written this book. The journey never stops. I found it very inspiring to see someone have both the courage and support to take off on a cross country journey and then write about it. My ownself, I have fictionalized my experiences in "Forever Retro Blues." I am in awe of anyone who can put themselves out there like Anne did. It's a spiritual quest in addition to the physical one of finding herself in mid-life. Well done, Anne, well done.

As an international skydiving champion, Anne Batterson was someone I admired when I began jumping in 1962. She went on to become a flight instructor and charter pilot. She understands flight and is fascinated by all who fly.

Batterson describes her following of a fall bird migration with flashbacks to her earlier adventures. I loved reading about her skydiving in the early days.

She relates the need to be alone from time to time.

A good writer with a large and varied vocabulary, she crafts a good read.

As an author, publisher and skydiver, I found this book fascinating and fun to read.

This book chronicles Anne Batterson's solo road trip at the age of 56 to confront midlife while following the fall bird migration. Overall the book is well written but just never seems to go anywhere. There are moments of soul baring but for the most part this reader found the book superficial. With so many adventures to her credit entailing more risk than most of us dare, it is sad that this author didn't risk sharing more of herself.

5 out of 5 stars The Black Swan.......2001-08-16

A beautiful, subtle, completely absorbing story that will stir the reader's own internal wild bird. It was such a privilege to share Ms. Batterson's journey. Hard to believe this is her first book and can't wait to read more from her.
