Book Description
Baltimore has a long, colorful history that traditionally has been focused on famous men, social elites, and patriotic events. The Baltimore Book is both a history of "the other Baltimore" and a tour guide to places in the city that are important to labor, African American, and women's history. The book grew out of a popular local bus tour conducted by public historians, the People's History Tour of Baltimore, that began in 1982. This book records and adds sites to that tour; provides maps, photographs, and contemporary documents; and includes interviews with some of the uncelebrated people whose experiences as Baltimoreans reflect more about the city than Francis Scott Key ever did.
The tour begins at the BO Railroad Station at Camden Yards, site of the railroad strike of 1877, moves on to Hampden-Woodbury, the mid-19th century cotton textile industry's company town, and stops on the way to visit Evergreen House and to hear the narratives of ex-slaves. We travel to Old West Baltimore, the late 19th-century center of commerce and culture for the African American community; Fells Point; Sparrows Point; the suburbs; Federal Hill; and Baltimore's "renaissance" at Harborplace. Interviews with community activists, civil rights workers, Catholic Workers, and labor union organizers bring color and passion to this historical tour. Specific labor struggles, class and race relations, and the contributions of women to Baltimore's development are emphasized at each stop.
Customer Reviews:
A Different way to look at Charm City........2006-03-31
If you want to scratch below the well presented surface of Baltimore (Harbor Place, Camden Yards, Ravens Stadium, and the gentrified Fells Point and Canton), take a look at this book. Some of the socially and historically more important neighborhoods of Baltimore are given themed walking tours. Accompanying each tour is a historical and social narrative explaining why this particular corner of Baltimore mattered so much in the history and society of the city. It's a great way to find out new things about neighborhoods that have seen their ethnic charm and style replaced by affluent banality.

Book Description
Japanese and American economists assess the present economic status of the elderly in the United States and Japan, and consider the impact of an aging population on the economies of the two countries.
With essays on labor force participation and retirement, housing equity and the economic status of the elderly, budget implications of an aging population, and financing social security and health care in the 1990s, this volume covers a broad spectrum of issues related to the economics of aging. Among the book's findings are that workers are retiring at an increasingly earlier age in both countries and that, as the populations age, baby boomers in the United States will face diminishing financial resources as the ratio of retirees to workers sharply increases.
The result of a joint venture between the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Japan Center for Economic Research, this book complements Housing Markets in the United States and Japan (1994) by integrating research on housing markets with economic issues of the aged in the United States and Japan.

Book Description
The population base in both the United States and Japan is growing older and, as those populations age, they provoke heretofore unexamined economic consequences. This cutting-edge, comparative volume, the third in the joint series offered by the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Japan Center for Economic Research, explores those consequences, drawing specific attention to four key areas: incentives for early retirement; savings, wealth, and asset allocation over the life cycle; health care and health care reform; and population projections.
Given the undeniable global importance of the Japanese and U.S. economies, these innovative essays shed welcome new light on the complex correlations between aging and economic behavior. This insightful work not only deepens our understanding of the Japanese and American economic landscapes but, through careful examination of the comparative social and economic data, clarifies the complex relation between aging societies, public policies, and economic outcomes.

Book Description
Financial organizations, like many others, are undergoing radical change. This is affecting both their organizational processes and the technology that supports those processes. This book reports on the use of sociological ethnography in helping guide these changes, both in terms of helping better understand and redraw work processes and through providing more accurate and flexible understanding of he role technology plays. It places he reported research in context by contrasting it with those approaches more commonly associated with change, including business processes engineering, participative design and soft systems methodologies. The book explains what are the benefits of ethnography, as well as the potential it has in helping achieve more desirable change in any and all organizations, financial services included. The book will be of interest to all international researchers concersed with organizational and technological change, as well as managers of organizational development. It will also interest advanced students in sociology, anthropology, management science and organizational studies.
Book Description
"Say what you mean and mean what you say." Advice doesn't get any better than this. But these pure and simple words of wisdom are often devilishly difficult to put into practice. Here's a guide to communication with a vital difference: an emphasis on emotional effectiveness. Jack Griffin, a prominent author in Prentice Hall Press's "How to Say It" series, believes the key to getting any message across with impact is finding its heartline: the surest route from logic to emotions, from head to heart.
Whether the object of conversation is a boss, colleague, lover, spouse, child, parent, friend, or stranger, How To Say It From The Heart opens the way to speaking with conviction, sincerity, and compassion. Among many common yet profoundly personal challenges, chapters cover: apologizing from the heart; expressing heartfelt thanks and appreciation; providing truly constructive criticism--and real encouragement; offering meaningful sympathy and condolence; extending genuine congratulations--without jealousy; welcoming newcomers--whether employees, customers, or neighbors; dealing with emotionally-charged issues, including death. Filled with illuminating examples and telling notes on words and phrases that can make a heart soar--or break, How To Say It From The Heart is the ultimate guide for all with a stake in meaningful and caring communication.

Complexity applied to Technology.......2000-11-30
This work provides the perfect lexicon for understanding the everchanging world around us. Kash and Rycroft provide for a total reconceptualization of technology, innovation, and public policy. Provided here are the keys for an adaptive, dynamic strategy for both competition and public policy.
Useful for managers in any industry (including the public sector)and especially for those in industries most rife with complexity such as information technology, engineering, electronics, farming, machine tools, robotics, computer science, etc. (although it will soon be everything).
Customer Reviews:
Very helpful book.......2007-07-14
I bought this book shortly before my husband and I made the final decision to go ahead with IVF. We went through IVF at one of the Sher Institutes (in IL) and I found Dr. Sher's book to be very helpful in answering some of questions/worries and even after speaking with the nurses & doctors at the clinic, this book was a great quick reference tool for any questions that I had.
I believe that this book would be helpful for anyone considering and/or going through the IVF process, regardless of what clinic you are having the procedure through.
Although the book doesn't give personal accounts of the IVF process, it does provide very helpful and technical information. I found myself referring to this book more than any of the other IVF books that I purchased.
excellent resource for couples wanting info on ivf.......2007-05-27
If you want a clear explanation of the process of ivf this is an excellent resource. It avoids personal stories and provides a comprehensive overview of the range of options for assisted reproduction.
Outdated information.......2005-07-13
I made the mistake of purchasing his older book called The A.R.T. of making babies updated edition. Do not buy unless your doing a research paper. This book was written in 1998 and the information is outdated. Make sure you purchase the 2005 edition. I wish amazon.com would have made this clearer. I did read it anyways and had the book been filled with updated information it could be informative. I found the "Couple's guide to In Vitro Fertilization a much better book. Having recently gone through the procedure it was right on the money and very easy to read and understand.
Good source of information.......2005-06-14
My husband and I recently found out that IVF was probably our only hope at having a biological child. We live in an area where IVF is basically non-existent... as is the information that we've received. I wanted to find out everything I could about the IVF process, expenses, etc. This book was an excellent source of information from fertility testing, to the entire IVF process. It also went into depth on new procedures that can be used along with IVF. VERY inforamtive, and I would recommend to anyone craving knowledge about IVF.
This is the NEW edition of The A.R.T. of Making Babies!.......2005-05-28
I noticed the review from KK "Current IVFer" below and wanted to to say that this is the NEWEST edition of
In Vitro Fertilization: The A.R.T. of Making Babies by Dr Geoffrey Sher (Copyright 2005)
. This book contains NEW information about IVF techniques and technology. KK "Current IVFer", if you received the older version of this book, when you thought that you had ordered this NEW edition, contact the Sher Institutes for Reproductive Medicine, Patient Resource Center at
www.haveababy.com
, I'll bet they'll be happy to replace your copy.

Book Description
Richard III has come to be the most famous figure to emerge from Britain's War of the Roses, largely due to the play by William Shakespeare, but this 30-year conflict (1455-1485) had a large cast of heroes and villains, and saw the biggest and fiercest battles ever fought on English soil. This new book in the format of the popular Battleground Europe series concentrates on two major battles fought during the pivotal years of 1460 and 1461. As 1460 drew to a close, Edward, Duke of York (white roses) was in open revolt against the Lancastrian (red roses) king, Henry VI. A superior Lancastrian force ambushed Edward and killed him and many of his men; Edward's head was subsequently displayed over the main gate of his own city of York.
Thirsting for revenge, the Duke's son, also named Edward (who later reigned as Edward IV), gathered a force and sought out the Lancastrian host. On March 29, 1461 the two armies collided in a blinding snowstorm near the town of Wakefield in what was to be the bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil. The prevailing wind blew in the faces of the Lancastrian archers and the Yorkists were triumphant after a six-hour battle. As was often the case during the War of the Roses, the defeated army was mercilessly pursued and prominent leaders were executed when captured. This heavily illustrated account uses the Battleground Europe format to describe in detail these historic parts of Britain both then and now, an approach particularly important for medieval battles which must be more painstakingly reconstructed than more modern ones. Those seeking background material on Shakespeare's four plays on Henry VI and Richard III will also find this book useful.

Book Description
The major concerns in Jewish history throughout the ages have been assimilation, acculturation, and accommodation. The difficulties which Jews have faced in the past, the problems which they confront in the present, and the issues which will have a major implication for their future are the heart of this collection. Particular attention is paid to the subject of interfaith marriage, which stirs more intense debate than any other issue. The collection contains 16 articles reviewing different aspects of assimilation, acculturation and accommodation from the Masmonean period in the second century B.C.E. and the relationship between Judaism and Hellenism, continuing with some historical examples of Jewish asssimilation in different time periods, and finally exploring some problems of current American Jewry. The collection ends with a panel discussion about the future of world Jewry approaching the 21st century. Contributors include Uriel Rappaport, Shaye J.D. Cohen, Louis Feldman, Steven Bowman, Kenneth Stow, Gordon Bronitzky, Deborah Hertz, Suzannah Herschel, Gerda Schmidt, Sylvia Abrams, Gershon Greenberg, Michael Lawler, Paul A. Spickard, Gerald L. Showstack, Gary P. Williams, Mervin Verbit, Samuel A. Klausner, and David Gerdis. Co-published with the Center for the Study of Religion and Society.

Book Description
The use of DNA and other biological macromolecules has revolutionized systematic studies of evolutionary history. Methods that use sequences of nucleotides and amino acids are now routinely used as data for addressing evolutionary questions that, although not new questions, have defied description and analysis. The world-renowned contributors use these new methods to unravel particular aspects of the evolutionary history of birds.
Avian Molecular Evolution and Systematics presents an overview of the theory and application of molecular systematics, focusing on the phylogeny and evolutionary biology of birds. New, developing areas in the phylogeny of birds at multiple taxonomic areas are covered, as well as methods of analysis for molecular data, evolutionary genetics within and between bird populations, and the application of molecular-based phylogenies to broader questions of evolution.
Key Features
* Contains authoritative contributions from leading researchers
* Discusses the utility of different molecular markers for questions of avian evolution, involving populations and higher-level taxa
* Applies molecular-based phylogenies of birds and molecular population genetics data to broad questions of organismal and molecular evolution.
* Compares and contrasts molecular and morphological data sets
Customer Reviews:
Indispensable for Avian molecular biologists.......2000-03-25
'Avian Molecular Evolution and Systematics' provides students and researches alike with an unparalleled review of avian molecular techniques in sytematics and phylogenetics. David P. Mindell has compiled an authoritative collection of contributions from ornithologists and molecular biologists that cover both theoretical and practical applications. The chapters trace the theory behind the altered gene order of avian mtDNA and provide informative reviews of the utility of mtDNA genes in systematics, phylogeny, phylogeography and deciphering patterns of avian evolution. In addition to covering mtDNA a chapter is included on the theory and application of microsatellites, a relatively new technique to molecular biology. It is however unfortunate that there are not more avian microsatellite examples besides that which covers relatedness between cooperative displaying male manakins. However the author does include other applications of microsatellite data (quantitative gene flow and genetic variation) using gray seals and bighorn sheep as examples. This book ends with a chapter on ancient DNA that reviews some of the more commonly used extraction procedures for ancient DNA and again provides examples covering systematics and paleoecology. Although the chapters do cover some molecular procedures the book does not serve as a laboratory guideline to working with avian DNA, rather it covers the more interesting theoretical aspects of avian speciation and evolution. In general 'Avian Molecular Evolution and Systematics' is indispensable for the avian molecular biologist who is interested in phylogenetics, systematics and the evolution of behavior.

Book Description
The biology of birds is diverse and frequently differs significantly from that of other vertebrates. Many birds migrate or fly at high altitudes, while egg-laying and feather production places high demands on nutrient uptake and storage. This book is the only comprehensive and up-to-date survey of avian biochemistry and molecular biology available. It emphasises the similarities and differences between birds and other vertebrates, concentrating on new developments. The first section deals with protein, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, its hormonal control and the adaptations that occur in birds. The second covers the avian genome, gene expression, and avian immunology. Growth and embryological development are also discussed. Avian Biochemistry and Molecular Biology will be of interest to all those working on birds, especially postgraduate students and researchers.
