5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully researched!.......1999-02-17

This book had a poignant feel because none of the historic homes featured still exist, but it was well-written and a work of love. The author's research was exhaustive, photos that were available of these homes were used whenever possible and the stories and histories behind these grand homes were enlightening. A definite read if you love the Old South and its faded glory.

                      4 out of 5 stars a caveat.......2007-04-08

this book, as indicated by its title, its genre, its time period, and its authors, embraces theoretical foundations long since discredited even among the academics: viz., that perfect information can be obtained (the true meaning of Kelly); that complete rationality is not only expectable within any game-theoretic space, but also, once realized, can adapt perfectly to such stochastic and discontinuous processes as appear; and that randomness, not persistence, is the foundation of every speculative game.

nearly every mathematical model of an event results in tautologies, in that the model rests upon assumptions not contained within the condition it abstracts. proof of the adequacy of the model, therefore, rests less upon its predictive power--although, perhaps, accurate when applied to a subset of the universe about which it discourses--than its meta-logical, meta-factual persuasions. logical systems are axiomatic, that is, deductive; where-as real systems are conditional and probabilistic, and give rise to frequent contradiction. efficiency market theory suffers from these persuasions, from these tautologies, and insinuates its bias in the conclusions it draws.

efficiency exists only so long as an equilibrium exists in the underlying dynamic: once an efficiency is embraced by the players in a game as a "law", the preponderance of opinion must necessarily neglect the exceptions to its beliefs, and thus, bring about that inefficiency which it arose to defray: the exception is undervalued, and this elevates its worth.

3 out of 5 stars Collection of ~60 Academic Papers.......2005-02-20

This is a very difficult to locate title and you are likely to pay a significant price premium. I found my copy at Amazon.co.uk and it was a reverse bound photocopy of the manuscript, still carrying a premium price!

The book contains approximately 60 academic papers divided into seven categories. As academic papers, each of the paper goes into significant depth regarding narrow topics. The organization of the book attempts to bridge between the topics. Some of the papers are "classics" written as early as the 1940's. Papers include the classics by Harville, Hausch, Asch and Benter. The authors of the papers include mathematicians, psychologists and gamblers. Some value in the book is derived through identification of these authors to search for their other works. The bibliography and acknowledgements are uniquely useful.

Frankly, after reading the majority of the papers, I am not sure I understand the exhorbitant pricing for the book. I do not see any conclusions or recommendations that aren't contained in a range of handicapping books, and the individual papers are readily available to anyone willing to invest the time to research at a major technical library. The book is a good one, but not as great as the price would lead you to believe.

William Ziemba and Donald B. Hausch, eds., Efficiencies of Racetrack Betting Markets: Economic Theory, Econometrics, and Mathematical Economics (Academic Press, 1994)

I believe this is the only review I have ever written for a book I do not own. While I was working at a university in the late nineties, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a copy of this in their library after reading Ziemba and Hausch's landmark Beat the Track. For the year between my finding it and my switching jobs, the book was out of the library and in my hands every day. I renewed as often as I could, and when I couldn't, I would drop it off on my way to work and take it out again on my way home. They were inclined to be lenient, because I was the only person who had ever taken the book out of the library.

Let me get one thing straight from the outset: folks, this is not your momma's handicapping manual. For that matter, it's not your shady Uncle George's handicapping manual, either. It's a graduate-level econ textbook. And if you have no background in math (as I didn't at the time, and I still have only what I've gleaned thanks to Howard Sartin and Tom Brohamer), your first trip through this large and ponderous tome will be torturous. You might want to bone up on your equations, not to mention keeping a small handbook of "what Greek letters mean to economists" by your side at all times.

Eventually, however, you will dig your way down to the meaning of the first paper. And then the second. And then the third. And so on. And for the horseplayer with an academic bent (definition, gleaned from some nasty comments during a discussion on the book that irked some folks who didn't like what they were hearing: any bettor who read Rosecrance's The Degenerates of Lake Tahoe and was able to laugh when finding a description of someone a lot like him), figuring out what these people are on about is the rough equivalent of discovering the tombs of Tutankhamen, Rameses, and Nefertiti all at the same time, and finding incontrovertible proof that Anubis really DID carry their souls off to the realm of the dead in the process. It's true that any bright middle-school student who has a good grasp of fractions will be able to get Beat the Track, and praise the powers that be that Ziemba and Hausch are capable of translating this morass into something most people can understand, even if they only touched on a portion of one of Ziemba's papers (which is the first one presented here). If the middle-school student is really, REALLY bright, is what the classifieds today call a self-starter (read: willing to try and figure this stuff out on his own), and has access to a tutor and/or writings that can explain some of the more esoteric facts, and has six months or so free to decipher this stuff full-time, said bright middle-schooler can probably find the keys to the kingdom. And get a pretty solid understanding of econ jargon in the process (which could lead to blowing the curve in Freshman-level econ classes in a few years).

I've been considering going back to school and learning to be an accountant. Before I do so, I have every intention of acquiring a copy of this hefty tome, which will likely set me back a year's tuition or more, and using it so I, too, can blow the curve. Of course, if it helps me make enough money to pay for school in the process, that would be quite a bonus, but the real value here is in showing, once and for all, that depending on your point of view, either horse race investing is no more a gamble than playing the stock market, or that playing the stock market is just as much a gamble as putting your two bucks on the nose of Glue Factory Refugee in the seventh at Charles Town on Friday night. *****

                      4 out of 5 stars A must read.......2000-07-28

After reading and researching statistical techniques applied to horse racing this book is by far the most important and complete book I have read. The techniques are proven using complex math and statistical calculations and if repeated can earn a consistant and reasonable profit.

                          Book Description

Recent decades have seen a sharp increase in financial competition, intensified by globalization. Excessive risk-taking leading to inevitable business failures at times reached worrying proportions. This volume attempts to analyze and explain financial market developments at the turn of the millennium with special reference to the UK and Germany. The emphasis of the papers is on the need for greater accountability and a more ethical approach to financial decision-making.

The agile business embraces change rapidly and gracefully. To be ready, the business needs an infrastructure that supports change without disruption or excessive cost. An adaptive infrastructure enables the business to cope with unforeseen circumstances and competitive demands. To build, use, and manage adaptive enterprise solutions, you need an infrastructure planning process that supports new and growing business initiatives. The strategies and processes described in this book will give you clear and practical ways to guide your company through Internet-induced change:

5 out of 5 stars Learn to keep pace by being adaptive rather than driven.......2003-07-09

Although to many, the rate of change in the IT area has slowed down from the frenetic pace of the dot com era, to most that is just as much an illusion as the false profits of the dot com era were. The rate of change is still rapid, and in many areas the extent of the change is hidden. If your task is to make a "small" change to a large program, that single change may be monumental, in approach, execution and consequences. Therefore, when talk turns to being an adaptive enterprise, it must include both the ability to create new products in order to enter new markets and the capability of adapting current products to respond to smaller changes in customer needs. It is not possible to consider one to be microchanges and the other macrochanges, as either one could be large or small depending on the circumstances.
In both cases, it is not possible to be adaptable without adopting the appropriate mindset, which involves emotional and organizational adjustments. Emotionally, one must become tolerant of change and organizationally, it is necessary for information to flow quickly and in both directions along the hierarchy chart. The emphasis in this book is on the organizational adjustments that need to be made, although the emotional adjustments are occasionally mentioned. The organizational adjustments are handled very well, described in enough detail so that there is no ambiguity in understanding what they are and how they are performed.
The emphasis is on reusable components, not all of which are constructed of software. In chapter 2, there are descriptions of the physical components, functional components and interface components. Several different types of organizational patterns are described, what they are, how they are used as well as the consequences of their use. Chapter 3 covers the general categories of transact patterns, publish patterns and collaboration patterns. A transact pattern is any application that writes structured information to a system. Publish patterns deal with data that is presented in a read-only form, although it also includes any summaries and other analysis done on the data. The collaborate patterns deal with the sharing of data between peers. Each pattern covered is then summarized in sections describing the benefits of using it as well as the weaknesses that it exhibits.
In chapter 4, the emphasis is on the creation of adaptive services, which are shared structures that are static and permanent, reusable and have a different lifecycle than the physical infrastructure. As the authors mention, the key to providing adaptive services is to identify those parts that need to change independently, and structure the service so they can be altered without changing the other components.
Chapters 5, 6 and 7 deal with the strategies used to define the business problem(s) to be solved, developing arguments to justify the project and obtain the funding, managing per-project processes as well as periodic processes, communicating with developers and customers, and the management of the people in the process. This section is a summary of the best practices in how to identify and solve problems using methods that will lead to subsequent problems being easier to solve.
After a great deal of ink has been used to explain the failures of software development, the IT crowd has made relatively little progress in solving many of the problems of software development. Some of that ink might as well have been spilled, but not so for the ink used to create this book. Packed with sound advice as to how to build a solid yet flexible developmental infrastructure, this is one book that all managers of large projects should read.

5 out of 5 stars Brings Infrastructure Management to a New Level.......2002-04-04

The infrastructure management approach that the authors give in this book incorporates practices from systems (and software) engineering, and is a blueprint for success. The objectives are: (1) end-to-end management with no gaps in ownership, (2)cost efficiencies through reuse and component-based strategies, (3)holistic view that looks at business, operational and technology (instead of the common 'technology only' view), and adaptability (an infrastructure that is managed to long range goals, but can be quickly adapted to emerging and immediate business needs).

How the authors meet these objectives is by identifying physical, functional and interface components that make up the infrastructure and integrating them into a service-oriented framework. This is consistent with component-based software engineering, and it is a remarkably good fit to infrastructure management. Moreover, the authors introduce patterns, also borrowed from software and systems engineering disciplines, to map business requirements to design in an efficient manner that promotes reuse. Another advantage of patterns is this approach captures knowledge (something not directly pointed out in the book). If you're not familiar with process patterns the book I recommend for infrastructure professionals is More Process Patterns by Scott Ambler. This is the second of a two book set and it directly addresses patterns that are related to infrastructure (the first book, Process Patterns, is more focused on software engineering).

The two chapters I liked the most are 4, Developing Adaptive Services, and 5, Services Starter Kit. These chapters tie services to infrastructure and go into fine detail about how to integrate services and the underlying technology. I especially like the way the authors use multiple life cycle management for each layer in the infrastructure. Chapters 6 (Processes and Methods) and 7 (Packaging and People) neatly pull together the preceding chapters into a coherent, process-oriented strategy. The single appendix is also valuable because it gives a comprehensive component catalog. This catalog can be used as the basis of the infrastructure blueprint as well as the foundation of an encompassing asset management initiative.

This award winning book describes the immense value of re-connecting with one's family roots in the sense of seeing these people as the full, rich human beings they are, rather than just as mother, dad, grandfather, aunt, brother, sister. In a style written for the general public, the author describes the various ways a person may enlarge his or her perception of one's family roots. Concrete examples and steps are given to enable the reader to embark upon this exciting journey. Anyone interested in solving the mystery of their family roots, healing wounds, or gaining a greater sense of oneself and self-esteem will find this book filled with insights, recognizable stories, and practical advice.

Frederick the Great's battlefield triumphs are seen as a tribute to Prussian skill at arms, but many of his victories were won with the aid of a Scottish general. Frederick ignored Keith's advice, but was saved from catastrophe when the Scottish general sacrificed himself. Today a statue of General Keith stands in the Scottish town of Peterhead, a gift of the Prussian monarchy.

A somewhat dissapointing book. It begins almost
as a biography written by a curate of the 18th century. Nevertheless the descriptions of the Russian wars conducted by Keith against the Turks and the Swedes are revelatory. Unfortunatley the only maps provided are thoses taken from Duffy's works. In the end. it is nice to see a new biography on one of the marshals of one of History's greatest captains.

                                3 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2002-12-12

It's a good book. Lot's of good information about the Keith's from Scotland. If you are a descendant of the Keith's you will love the history. If you are just a history buff you will learn a lot about a not very well know person who had a big impact on history.

Like gardening, bird watching is a fast-growing regional hobby. Now, Cool Springs Press brings its proven method of successful state-specific gardening approach to bird watching guides. In collaboration with Bird Watcher's Digest, these bird watching guides provide accessible, credible advice.

The birds that frequent the backyards of Louisana differ from the birds that frequent the backyards of Tennessee. In addition to unique descriptions, each bird profile includes a range map to identify each bird's North American distribution. One hundred birds are profiled, each with a color photograph, to ensure accurate identification. A seasonal section informs the reader of:
Migrating birds that can be seen during that season
The foods and plants that can attract those birds
Where to go to view year-round and migrating birds

Cool Springs Press's partner, Bird Watcher's Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird species, bird habitat, feeding, and other related topics.

This series of books from Cool Springs Press targets the beginning bird watchers for ten states.

                                    Book Description

As springtime approaches in southern Louisiana, colorful colonial wading birds flock to the rookery at Lake Martin to breed, nest and raise their young.

With thousands of egrets, Roseate Spoonbills and herons of many types being hatched each spring, this area is said to have "one of the most spectacular wading bird rookeries in North America."

That's the description used by nature photographer and writer Nancy Camel in her new book, The Nature of Things at Lake Martin: Exploring the Wonders of Cypress Island Preserve in Southern Louisiana.

The book is a pictorial and a documentary dealing with Lake Martin and Cypress Island Preserve, of which the lake is a part. Containing some 130 color photographs - most notably of the birds, the mammals and their environment - the book describes the personalities and mating rituals of the birds and tells the history of Cypress Island Preserve. Throughout the year there are more than 200 species of resident, migratory and wintering birds; 1,200 to 1,800 alligators; and wildflowers, butterflies, dragonflies, frogs, snakes, turtles, squirrels, beavers, nutria, otters, foxes, rabbits, deer, raccoons and other furry animals.

The book includes maps of the Lake Martin area and preserve, tips on photographing birds and other animals, and lists of the more than 200 birds identified in the area.

A resident of Baton Rouge, Ms. Camel's work has appeared in National Wildlife, Outdoor Photographer, Birdscapes and Wetlands International, as well as on Audubon calendars.

Nancy Camel's book is not another coffee table book with exquisite photographs; it is more - a book to fascinate all ages from elementary school students to senior citizens. The book catches swamp creatures in action, shows their personalities. It could easily be the basis for a science unit. Camel does indeed explore "the Wonder of Cypress Island Preserve" and takes me with her each time I open this magnificient book.

                                    Book Description

This is the first guide to dragonflies and damselflies of the south-central United States. The book covers 263 species, representing more than half of the North American fauna. The area of coverage significantly overlaps with other regions of the country making this book a useful aid in identifying the dragonflies and damselflies in any part of the United States, Canada, or northeastern Mexico.

More photographs of damselflies in North America appear here than in any other previously published work. All 85 damselfly and 178 dragonfly species found in the region are distinguished by photographs, numerous line drawings, keys, and detailed descriptions to help with identifications. Features include:

5 out of 5 stars Dragonfly guide review.......2007-09-17

I have several guides for birds, butterflies, snakes, reptiles and amphibians. I just started learn about dragonflies this year and this is one of the best guides I have seen. In fact, it was highly recommended by an individual who has a Masters Degree in dragonfly study. I recommend it for individuals just starting out with dragonflies as the photos are great but it also provides enough information (range maps) to let you narrow down and identify the more difficult species.

5 out of 5 stars The Texas Odonata Bible.......2006-12-23

This field guide is the one to own. It covers not only all the dragonflies of Texas and the Southcentral US, but all the damselflies as well. The photographs are superb and this make for easy identification of species in the field. However, because of these pluses, the result is a rather sizable guide that is just a bit too heavy to really qualify as a handy field guide. If you can deal with its size and weight, it more than makes up for this handicap in thes helpful information it provides. The only drawback and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is because it is a tad less user friendly for the novice or non-professional (i.e. The species identification keys are a bit confusing). Nevertheless, it is destined to become the standard to measure all other guides.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A Complete Guide to South-Central Odonates.......2005-11-08

As an admirer of dragonflies and damselflies I was quite delighted to find this book by John C. Abbott. It is a mix of the very technical and (at least in part because of the 64 plates of magnificent color photos) the very useful for the non-specialist. The range maps are invaluable as a way of adding clues for the identification of similar species. The line drawings of anatomical parts are important in separating closely related species and the glossary of terms, the check list, and the large bibliography round out a very useful or even indispensable volume for the dragonfly watcher. In short, this book is a serious guide to an area with the highest odonate diversity in the United States. "Dragonflies and Damselflies of Texas and the South-Central United States" simply is a must for anyone interested in the odonate fauna of the five states involved. Its production, along with at least three earlier regional and national books on the subject, is a testimonial to the growing popularity of these beautiful and fascinating insects.

5 out of 5 stars A serious book for the serious reader.......2005-08-20

This is not a book that you can skim; rather, it is one intended for the serious student of Odonata in Texas. Written by an acknowledged expert in the field, it covers everything you might want to know about the dragonflies found in Texas.

Be warned, though, that you cannot approach this book lightly. The author uses scientific terms liberally: you will have to spend time acquiring the vocabulary.

For the serious Texas "Odo-nut" this is an absolutely essential part of your library.

3 out of 5 stars Good only for backyard birds, cover missleading........1998-05-25

Even though there is a pelican on the cover, there are no pelicans, egrets, cranes or other swamp birds that you would expect to find in a book called All About Louisisana Birds. The book was very informative on birds you would might see in your backyard expecially if you put out feed. It also had helpful advice on types of food, housing, what to plant, ect. However, this book could have been called All About Birds in Southeastern Backyards and been a more acurate title. As you can see I was a little put out about being misslead by the title and cover. But then, I maybe should have looked further and noticed the author was from Tennessee, not the Bayou.
