Philadelphia architect Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974) was one of the most influential American architects of the twentieth century. Pure Photo League!.......2000-01-28

I agree that this is a great collection of photographs, many either never or seldom published before, and supported by interesting and original text. It is amazing how little biographical information exists on so many photographers. I bought the book because it encompassed so many of my photographic heroes and introduced me to some photographers I was not familiar with. But the reason I decided to actually write a review here was to correct the previous reviewer who mentions that Gary Winogrand's work is included in the book. It's not. But it sure is nice to see more on the Photo League. What a great group. And it's nice to see their influence so fully recognized. Thank you Ms. Livingston!

Great unpublished photos by some of the greats........1999-12-07

This is treat for anyone interested in photography, especially in the period leading up to Winogrand, Friedlander, etc. Most of the photographs in this book, I've never seen before. Included are interesting 35mm work by Diane Arbus, some untypical Avedon, great Robert Frank's that I haven't seen published anywhere else, early Winogrand. However the really nice thing about this book is in being able to see the work of those lesser known, but nonetheless great, photographers such as Leon Levinstein, Louis Fauer, Alexi Brodovitch, and many more. Also includes a thorough and informative essay as well as individual profiles on the artists involved.

I Urge Everyone to Buy this Book.......2001-08-15

I never did like history. I never did understand that much about world economics. So I cautiously begin to read this book. I could not stop reading it and finished before the week was over. The authors have a masterful grasp of economics and how history formed the present status of our societies. They put all of it in a context with everyday people like you and me. Their writing style is not only informative but entertaining.

Even before I reached the last two chapters, I felt the book had given me my money's worth! The authors promised to present solutions to problems related to the hopelessness and frustrations many of us experience concerning our economic status, both on an individual and a national level. I expected to read, therefore, in the last two chapters some very abstract ideas and generalizations about what should be done. Things we have probable read somewhere. But the authors presented an exceptionally organized and outlined list of steps for the solutions. They even introduced mathematical formulas that permit us to easily follow our progress and success in implementing these solutions. This is not only a book of history, economics and a bit of politics. It is a unique book with personal antidotes, superb writing style and a compelling message. I urge everyone to read this book.

I wouldn't say that this is a casual read for the "general" reader. To really understand what this author has to say you have to have more than a casual interest in money and banking.
But that being said, I read it and I'm no banking major. I won't say that I understood everything that the author tried to explain. It was all very interesting and often very confusing. Often though I understood all the words, I couldn't fathom the sentence. Anyone who says that they understand "money" and how it works, I think is kidding themselves. Understanding the workings of what we call "money" is a logical paradox; it is a philosophical inquiry; it is much ado about something.
Understanding money is another project that I have taken on intellectually. Galbraith wrote a great book about "Money" From Whence It Came and Where It Went. He claimed in the intro to that book that anyone with the requisite desire has the ability to understand money. I don't think so.

Just read chapters 9 & 10.......2003-04-17

I run with a crowd of i-bankers, and I bought this book to try to better understand what they do all day. However, this book is a LOT of history, and the entire first Part of the book is VERY basic information relating to what "money" is.

If you learn well through anecdotes, you will find this book both informative and easy to read. If, on the other hand, you are considering this book thinking it will be information about the modern banking industry given in a straightforward way, you're out of luck. In order to understand the industry (or what pieces of it this book explores, anyway) you have to extrapolate larger themes from nearly 500 pages of amost exclusively history and anecdotal examples. In addition, Martin has a habit of describing people in the industry, e.g., "Mr. X, a swarthy fellow I knew while still a fencer at Penn and something of a womanizer besides..." For some, I'm sure this keeps the book from being too dry. I, on the other hand, found these descriptions annoying and diversionary.

In sum, if you're looking for information about the modern banking industry, just read chapters nine and ten, which are well-written, relatively complete, and exceptionally easy to understand. If, instead, you are looking for the story of how banking has evolved, or you just like to read businessmen's tales, then this is the book for you.

Very interesting book.......2000-06-19

This is the first and only book I've ever read on banking. But it is very well written, clear, concise, and filled with interesting bits of history. The author shows extreme mastery of the topic. If you read any book about the industry, this should be it.

A Book as Quirky as the Industry Portrayed by the Author.......2000-05-17

The financial services industry has always been something of an enigma to me. After reading THE BANKERS, it still is. Perhaps the lush reviews garnered by this book instilled unrealistic expectations: I expected a carefully researched, scholarly treatment of the banking business past-to-present. For better or worse, this book reads more like a quirky monologue by someone who knows the banking business well, but who prefers to deliver his knowledge by free association rather than by cogent and orderly description. The anecdotes are sometimes very entertaining, and the reader does pick up some valuable insights. But the return on effort extended is less than excellent. What's especially ironic is the book's chapters ARE cogently organized...it's only the follow-through that's lacking.

The book's high point is Chapter 3 (Paying Bills). Here the author does an admirable job of describing the excruciatingly convoluted process of check clearance. It would seem to be the dullest subject imaginable, but Mayer brings it to life -and I suspect he does such an admirable job because he has a flair for showing the quirkiness in any subject under the sun. The biggest disappointment of the book is how Mayer is compelled to entangle his journalistic prominence with whatever other point he wants to make ("A team of television journalists came from a Japanese network to visit me in Washington..."). Once again, there are some terrific insights, and some entertaining one-liners. It's just that the perspective one receives seems indulgently biased, and not particularly comprehensive.

Small Book Packed with Great Ideas.......2000-08-29

This is a great book for moms of young and grade-school aged children. As a mom, I often don't have enough time to read heavy and involved books. This book is broken up into 365 days with a great idea to build your child's self-esteem every day. Also, as a busy mom, it is much simplier for me to concentrate on one way to build my child's self-esteem rather than try to pack a book of knowledge into one day or week of my child's life.

The ideas are simple, practical, and easy to incorporate into your daily life. One idea that I plan to begin yearly is writing a letter to put in my children's Christmas stocking that expresses appreciation for the person they are, for the growth and progress they have had during the year, and the combination of mental, social, spiritual, and physical qualities I am thankful for.

Lots of bang for the buck.......1997-02-28

There are tons of books on the Spitfire. This one is surprisingly comprehensive for its small size. It efficiently cuts directly to the important concepts regarding the design, development, production and, use of the Spitfire and explains these concepts clearly and quickly. It's a really good reference book that reads well and will always have a place on my shelf. Kind of the "Cliff Notes" on the Spit. Everything you need to know about the aircraft is here in a condensed concise form. If you want lots of depth, and background info, you'll need to do more homework elsewhere

For anyone with any experience, save your money and spend it on a kit or aftermarket materials rather than this book. You will get nothing from the book.

If you are an absolute beginner and want a look at what exists beyond "straight from the box" building, this begins to give you a look, although you would be better off investing in Kalmbach's P-40 or Me-109 books.

A waste of money.......2002-10-26

Unfortunately, this book shows it's age (it shows that Spanish original was published in 1992) and in its case this is not a good thing.

First, the choice of models - authors use Hasegawa's Mk.V's (in regular and trop versions) in "Modeling the Spitfire Mk.V" chapter, then convert Tamiya's Mk.Vb to Mk.IXc and build PR.XIX using multimedia model of unknown (or at least unknown to me) company called "Casadio" in chapter called "Building Other Spitfire Variants". They also try to describe other models and aftermarket items, but fail miserably in doing so.

Second, writing style reminds of a good, typical "feature article" that is now common on the modeling websites. There is some information in it, but it doesn't go deep enough to satisfy but the least experienced reader. For example authors only keep informing about steps taken - saying "Then we (...) re-engraved the joint lines" or "Lens covers can then simply be made by scratch building the parts". In the same spirit, authors somehow manage to describe process of converting wing from "b" to "c" configuration without giving away a single useful piece of advice!

Third, pictures don't help much. Some are very informative (definitively giving more information than text), but there is not enough of the ones that show the process. Instead there is a plenty of ones that show effects of authors actions. In case of converting Mk.V to Mk.IX authors describe little surgery they did on kits nose (replacing it with resin part) using maybe five, six sentences and give absolutely no pictures! The same happens with the above mentioned wing conversion. Can you imagine? The "meat" of the conversion is reduced to few remarks and what the reader is left with is nice description of painting the camouflage.
