Of the many practitioners of art nouveau in Great Britain, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) has outlasted them all. His work bridged the more ornate style of the later nineteenth century and the forms of international modernism that followed. Like Frank Lloyd Wright, with whom he is frequently compared, Mackintosh is known for so thoroughly integrating art and decoration that the two became inseparable. His work has been honored by a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his designs have proliferated to such an extent that they can be found reproduced in posters, prints, jewelry, and even new buildings. His most important project was the Glasgow School of Art, which still functions as a highly prestigious art school. This glorious building is visited each year by thousands of tourists from around the world. Built over a dozen years, beginning in 1897, the Glasgow School of Art is Mackintosh's greatest and most influential legacy.

This completely redesigned and lavishly illustrated edition of Mackintosh's Masterwork has been greatly expanded and contains newly discovered material about both the early life of the architect and the formative years in which his plans for the School of Art were executed.

Back in the '60's I was on my way to Haight Ashbury from Boston when I stopped in Ann Arbor...and stayed! My adopted home town is so eclectic and has much to offer those passing through as well as those who,like myself, have made it their home. Cynthia Davis' book highlights many of the places which have become part of the soul of Ann Arbor- with amazing colors and textures. It would make an excellent holiday gift for anyone who has an attachment to the city. I plan on giving several myself!

Making it Big in America is a book that leads you step by step through the processes of setting and achieving your goals. Mr. Wood uses his life experiences to communicate in an entertaining and insightful way his methods of success. Although there are many other books on this subject available, starting with N. Hill's "Think and Grow Rich", I have not found a book that better communicates the success process in a way that I could understand. Mr. Wood goes through the goal setting process in detail and discusses the importance of motivation, action and persistence in making dreams a reality. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is in the process of building a better life, from those who are just beginning this process to those who have been involved in the process for many years.

The author states in chapter six : Candleworks is about making candles, creating jobs and building community. I found 'Light One Candle' to be about these, but also about personal and social responsibility as we conduct business. 'Light One Candle' is about beginning with little and resourcefulness, about obstacles and perseverence, about family and hope, and about unending faith in ourselves to rise through difficulty. In the new millennium, hunger, poverty, despair and violence are unacceptable and unnecessary. These four social viruses are the actual "four horsemen" of the apocalypse that threaten humanity. History demonstrates that great societies are more often destroyed by the rot of these viruses from within rather than attack from without. For decades, billions of dollars have been directed to external military defense, while the internal social viruses grow and are not dealt with effectively. Now that we're past the mass capital drain of the Cold War and the Nuclear Arms Race, our society can redirect capital into entrepreneurial ventures that further human progress. War and political conflict are the result of humanity's historically embedded fear of the scarcity of resources in our collective memory. Political fear and racism persist as an emotional, irrati! onal response. Intelligent analyis of our present global resources and technology indicate that scarcity is no longer a physical reality. There is plenty for all, if we organize the entrepreneurial will to harvest the actual global abundance.

Epidemic youth violence, crime, drug abuse, poverty and homelessness are all symptoms of the social virus. Whether businesses calculate the social costs of violence, crime, drug abuse and homelessness into the profit and loss statements of their companies, these costs exist and directly effect the bottom line. Such hidden overhead weakens their business and community. These costs are assumed inefficiently through cumbersome, bureaucratic government structures that then charge back this "social overhead" in the form of high local, state and federal taxes. The majority of social overhead is presently passively paid by the business sector. That system doesn't work. It costs about fifty thousand dollars a year to lock up our soc! ial casualties in prison. The average prison sentence is 7 ! years. $350,000 for each prisoner! A lot of education, productive enterprise and preventative community development could be funded with this misused cash. The Social Enterprise Association (S.E.A.) has been formed to organize business and community leaders to envision and activate social transformation as we initiate our next century of human history.
