Book Description

Mario Botta: Architectural Poetics is the newest book in the Universe architecture series. This volume presents the work of the Swiss-born architect who worked as an assistant to such architecture giants as Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn before starting his own firm in 1970 and achieving international fame. Botta' characteristic respect for topographical conditions and regional sensibilities, his deft craftsmanship and the importance of geometric order in his work are evidenced in thirty projects that range from smaller residential buildings to such grandiose projects as the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Jean Tinguely Museum and, most famously, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This detailed study also includes the designs he created for furniture and the stage. Mario Botta: Architectural Poetics is a thorough survey of the architectural and design work that launched Botta into the pantheon of modern architecture.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The book IS a master-piece in itself!.......2002-10-06

Architects transcribe their thoughts and emotions through their designs, forms, and spaces. Botta is without a doubt
a master in his own right.
But what compelled me to write this review is the "text", the writing. The author of the book is a practicing architect who has worked along side Botta. She seems to really understand what lies at the heart of architecture in General and Botta's design philosophy in particular.
If you are a student of architecture READ this book.
If you love to contemplate beautiful creations READ this book. And finally if you are a fan of good writing I urge you to read this book!

    Book Description

This title shows the gritty behind the scenes lifestyle in the Thoroughbred horse industry. This is the first and only book to focus on the backside of the track, illustsrating what it takes to work with these million-dollar equine athletes, focusing on the work and workers, bringing with them cattle as a mobile food supply. The men tht cared for these Andalusain cattle evolved into America's first cowboys, the Florida Cracker Cowman.

Jon Kral approaches the camera the way an artist approaches the canvas, and works with light, shadow, framing and imagery the way an artist uses paint, brush, and perspective. Hotbloods: Beyond The Winner's Circle is a visual celebration of the "back stage" race horse environment. The images of horses, people, equipment, stables, and race tracks are superbly crafted in full-page black and white photography. Hotbloods will be thoroughly enjoyed by all horse racing fans as well as photography-as-an-artform enthusiasts.

Aside from winning the "Best Art Book" in the 2000 MIPA Book Achievement Awards and placing as a Finalist in the ForeWord Magazine "Book of the Year" awards as Best Art Book, "Hotbloods" also won a PMA Benjamin Franklin Award. Additionally, shots from the book won two National Press Photographer's Association "Picture of the Year" awards. The book is an outstanding example of documentary photojournalism taken to an art form. Congratulations to Jon Kral for the work.

          Book Description

This book addresses the unresolved problem posed by the late economists Joan Robinson and Ian Steedman who criticized Marx's labor theory of value from a Sraffian perspective. Spencer J. Pack makes a major contribution toward resolving the problem by convincingly asserting that it is possible to build upon Marx's work and to produce a Marxian-type analysis without using the labor theory of value.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for anyone spending more than 1 month here.......2005-10-28

When I found out I was hired as a teacher in Chile I decided to research the country a bit before I came. My friend recommended this series. It's a light read, I quickly read it cover to cover. Some of it seems a bit outlandish, until you come to Chile. Everything I read in the book (especially on the subject of the regalon...being a teacher and all) has been true. It is incredible. This book clarified and prevented many cultural mishaps. I highly recommend this book if you intend to work or travel extensively in Chile.

5 out of 5 stars That explains why.....................2000-08-26

We lived with an Exchange Student from Chile this year. So many pages of this book had me thinking "So, that's why....." It answered many questions I didn't even know to ask.

5 out of 5 stars A must for foreigners in Chile.......2000-05-13

As an anthropologist and long-time resident of Chile, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who plans to spend time here. In fact, I've made it required reading in a 'culture course' I teach for North American university students here in Chile. This book is not another travel guide, but rather an insightful and very accessible look into the intracacies of Chilean culture. A quick look through the table of contents shows its range of topics, and the Cultural Quiz at the end is a must!

5 out of 5 stars An accurate and entertaining view of the Chilean "lifestyle".......2000-03-15

I was very lucky to have the opportunity to read this book. Being a Chilean myself, it was very interesting to learn about the way foreigners see us, particularly after living in the US for a couple of years. It is impressive how accurate the facts are, and the way they are presented is quite entertaining. I was very surprised to know that the authors were not native Chilean. My American fiancé bought this book in an attempt to understand me better, gain knowledge about my country, and to lean about traditions and customs of my people and society. He could not have gotten something better for this purpose. I think he now understands more about many of the things I do or the way I am. He has never been in Chile (yet), but I think that after reading the book things will make more sense, and it is an excellent guide to the daily life in that part of the world. I would recommend to start reading another section different from chapter one, which is the most difficult to read, particularly for somebody who is not familiar with Chile, and is planning to go there.

            4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2000-01-19

What a find! Being the child of a Chilean-American couple, I've spent a lot of time learning about the 'everyday life' and culture of Chile- although I readily confess to not being an expert. Reading this book was like a light bulb going on over my head! All of the sudden I understood a lot of things I'd noted on my visits with my father's family, but never really understood (like why they call turtlenecks Beatles!) I highly recommend this book to anyone who will be spending a lot of time in Chile. I've given it to my new husband to read, so he'll have a better understanding of the country when we go visit. Its a truly great resource!

5 out of 5 stars Best outline of Islamic History.......2004-04-13

Of all the outlines of Islamic history in English--and I have reviewed all of them in my search for a good epitome--this is the best general outline. Other outlines cover particular periods in more detail, but to do so they do not cover the entire sweep of history. This outline (which is a translation and enlargement of a French original) covers all of Islamic history from the 9th century BCE to 1993 CE in twelve chapters through 371 pages. Each chapter has a one page introduction and there are scattered throughout the book text sections about a paragraph long which are intended to aid the reader on obscure matters.
The author provides a twelve page glossary and a nineteen page index and nine full page maps. My only complaint is that the index was printed in much smaller type-face than the rest of the book, so that it is very difficult to read, but this sacrifice means that the index is actually more extensive than it seems, perhaps being equivalent to a forty page index. This is then a first rate outline.

                          Book Description

The quintessential A-Z guide, this is a book that anyone interested in birds will want to have close at hand. First published more than twenty years ago, this highly respected reference volume has been fully revised and updated. It captures the fundamental details as well as the immense fascination of North American bird life in a style that is authoritative, yet fresh, witty, and eminently readable.

Both a practical handbook for amateurs and a handy reference for seasoned birders, it provides accounts of the basic elements of birdlife, as well as a wealth of easy-to-access information on such subjects as bird physiology and anatomy, terms and jargon, name definitions and etymology, and ornithological groupings.

Readers will discover everything from the color of a dipper's eggs (glossy, white, and unmarked) to the number of species of woodpeckers in the world (216). They will also find more than one hundred of the best-known and most colorful colloquial names for birds, alphabetized and briefly defined. Collective nouns relating to birdlife--for example, "an exaltation of larks"--are included in the "Nouns of Assemblage" section. Biographical sketches of persons responsible for describing or naming a significant number of North American species are also included, as well as handsome and accurate illustrations by Gordon Morrison. And for those who want to go beyond reading about their favorite birds and take to the great outdoors, the book offers still more useful information: descriptive entries on a selection of the best-known birdwatching spots of North America.

If you're interested in a subject, there are times that particular concepts or words come up that you simply don't understand. What is "fossorial"? What is "scansorial"? How do baby birds get out of their shells? What is migration all about?

While the internet is a great resource, it doesn't always have what you're looking for, and the information can be quite wrong depending on the source. That's where an encyclopedia like this comes in handy.

Yes, it's pretty hefty at over 900 pages. It's a solid tome for your bookshelf. But there are times that it comes in SO handy while reading your latest birding magazine, or when someone asks you a question you simply don't know the answer to.

If you can track this down, it's well worth having!
