    Book Description

This book amends a common misconception about one of the greatest Renaissance masters, who has been characterized since his own day as incapable of effective collaboration. This study focuses on San Lorenzo, a key Florentine monument of the Renaissance, where Michelangelo’s contributions to the church are among his greatest achievements as a sculptor and architect. Organised around his three commissions at San Lorenzo - the never-realised facade for the church, the Medici chapel and the Laurentian Library - each chapter examines the organisation and day-to-day operations at the building site, as well as the artist’s personal and professional relations with nearly three hundred persons who assisted him in carrying out the designs. From the marble quarries at Seravezza to the building site in Florence, William Wallace relates Michelangelo’s struggles and triumphs as he worked on these projects for over two decades.

5 out of 5 stars A Book That Should Be Better Known!.......2002-09-28

I recently re-read this book after two years. It's still great. Hagaman's recounting of her exploratory and creative processes are detailed and really without parallel in the photographic literature. Few artists detail how they often move through images that may please others but that are cliched and unsatisfying to the artist themselves, and their search for something better through self-examination, staying open to what they really see, and persisting at what they feel is important. She echoes Winogrand at one point, describing her quest to find out that things are like when photographed. Conservative christians may not like some images, but she shoots what she sees.

        4 out of 5 stars A Dangerous Book.......2001-01-27

I loved this book. And those who love good photography will really enjoy it. Hagaman goes through the transformation of everyday photojournalist to heartfeeling photographer. Though the opinions about her religious standpoint can easily offend others, I think it was wonderful how by stepping back from the taught cliches she could open up to a greater expression of truth.

1 out of 5 stars just bad photography and thinking.......2000-01-28

How I Learned Not to Be a Photo Journalist is over all a dumb book. The only intrusting thing about it is pointing out the conflicts between art and photojournalism. But other then that it's not much more then a not-so-bright individual's quest to make a not-so-good group of pictures.

This book confirms that disaggregated services such as solid waste management, on-plot and on-site community-based sanitation supported by nongovernment organizations, and other small-scale enterprises are effectively serving the poor directly. For large-scale services such as water supply, sewage, and wastewater treatment, international private operations have made headway by partnering with local governments, nongovernmental organizations, and community-based groups. Case studies commissioned under the project included, while the complete studies are on a CD-Rom.

          Book Description

The sixth volume of the Collected Works of Michal Kalecki, one of the twentieth-century's pre-eminent economists, contains his empirical studies of the capitalist economy, published primarily in pre-war Poland. The first part of the book collects together reviews of business conditions in commodity markets, studies of the structure and operations of large companies and cartels, and articles on international economic relations. These studies, written between 1928 and 1935, demonstrate Kalecki's keen insight into the international consequences of the Great Crisis of 1929-33, and into the developments in Nazi Germany. The second part contains Kalecki's papers on the methodological problems of examining business fluctuations and on constructing indicators of economic trends. Part 3 comprises, Kalecki's estimates (together with Ludwik Landau) of the national income in Poland and of its structure. These studies, conducted between 1931 and 1935, were unique at the time in taking into account the distribution of aggregate income between the main social classes. The editorial notes and annexes at the end of the volume not only provide invaluable background information and explanatory glosses on the main text, but also give invaluable insights into the development of Kalecki's thought.

Kalecki's vision of the capitalist way of organizing a society, and his description of the entrepreneurial behavior are some of the best theories I've read in my road to the minor in economics. I recommend this author for his marxist elements, and his simplistic tools.

            Book Description

Do you know a Cain at work?

The back-stabbing liar who steals credit for your ideas...

The a**-kissing co-worker who worries about "face time" while you stay late working hard...

The gossipy colleague who spreads rumors just to create drama in the office.

If any of these people sound familiar, watch out: a Cain is lurking, ready to sabotage your job, your promotion, and even your reputation at work.

Written by two veteran media and political strategists, Cain and Abel at Work will help you survive the ultimate political arena—the office—and prepare you for the real-world interpersonal dynamics they don't teach you in business school.

In the Old Testament story that serves as the beginning metaphor for this book, backstabbing Cain kills the honorable Abel out of jealousy, and despite being punished with banishment, he goes on to marry, have a son, and build a city around him. All of a sudden, Cain gets to be a father, real estate developer, and probably the first politician of his day, while Abel's life is over in a flash. Authors Gerry Lange and Todd Domke have discovered that this type of injustice is still alive and well in the modern competitive workplace. Together, they have decades of personal experience and first-hand encounters with scheming, calculating Cains, and now they're giving readers an invaluable guide for coping with and combating Cain at work.

Using real-life case studies to illustrate how Cains operate, Cain and Abel at Work will teach you how to:

Identify the Cains before they make you their victim

Recognize the tactics Cains use to gain status and power

Win out over Cains without stooping to their level

With compelling new insight into human behavior and competition developed from the authors' experience in the political, media, and business arenas, Cain and Abel at Work explains what motivates both Cains and Abels at work. Not only does this book explore and deplore the behavior of Cains, it also explains how the simple naïveté of Abels allows Cains to get away with their shenanigans.

If anyone has ever stolen an idea from you or grabbed credit for your work, if they've taken advantage of or walked all over you, you need this book. Cain and Abel at Work is an office survival guide no well-intentioned Abel should be without.

            4 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading.......2002-04-17

Do you like to try hard when you go to work? Do you want every project be better than the last? Do you feel good about yourself if you can make things easier or smoother for someone else? All without really wanting anything in return but maybe a smile and a wave?
Is someone lying to, or about you, undermining you, or taking credit for your efforts, all to improve their perceived lot in the company? Is this person taking away your desire to do your best or go the extra mile?
If you can answer yes to _any_ of these questions you owe it to yourself to read this book. It doesn't offer much in the way to get around the situation, but knowing what your up against can help you pick a course before you become roadkill.

2 out of 5 stars Little practical advice.......2002-02-28

This book just tell you that there are some nasty people around but provide very little insight on how those people should be dealt with.

4 out of 5 stars Managers -- do your employees a favor and read this book!.......2001-05-10

Ever since my first job at a small startup company I've been looking for a book like this. At my first job there was a Cain. While he was not directly responsible for this company going out of business, he certainly contributed to its demise. All the other books that I've read since then stressed various things: better communication techniques; handling difficult personalities, promoting one self, using humor to get a point across, and the like. The problem with these books is they all assume that the problem person is well intentioned -- and this is the major flaw in these other books. This book is the first self help book I've ever come across that was willing to admit that unscrupulous people exist.

Lange and Domke's book addresses the problem of how to recognize a Cain. This characterization is important to us Able's, but the downside is that this book can be used as a guide for Cain's-in-training (alas, "it is a poor sword that does not cut both ways"). Sadly, the usefulness of this book to Able's is directly proportional to how useful it is to Cain's-in-training at becoming better Cain's.

The only thing I don't like is that in a lot of the examples, the Able's are forced to leave the company by the Cain's. Because of these examples, I can see the necessity of recommending that Able's 1) "don't corner a Cain" 2) avoid interacting with a Cain (the authors don't say this specifically, but it comes across in the examples and the remedies). I would have preferred more direct methods for dealing with a Cain instead of hoping that all managers read this book and additionally hoping that it is not to the manager's benefit to keep a Cain around. The authors take the high road in dealing with Cain's. I suppose direct methods would involve becoming Cain-like myself and I'd rather eat glass shards than become a Cain. Maybe somebody can come out with a book describing how Able's can triumph over Cain's instead of merely existing in their shadows.

Regardless, this is an excellent book. And when it comes out in paperback, I plan on buying a half dozen copies and giving them to every manager I know.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing! Could rename it "Office Politics 101".......2001-05-01

This book spends the first 160 pages helping you identify the "evil" Cains and recognize their tactics...then just one chapter helping you "win over" Cains without stooping to their level. I found "The Secret Handshake" by Kathleen Kelly Reardon much more useful. Her book covers the basics "Cain and Abel" does (though much quicker!) and features quizzes to understand your political style (and your co-workers and executive management's too) as well as your company's overall style - and most importantly how to stretch your style at times to meet certain needs. You'll also learn how to handle recognition, patronizing behavior, separating offense from insult, influence cultivating, how to be gracefully right or wrong and much more - issues "Cain & Abel" doesn't address. "The Secret Handshake" advice applies to anyone wanting to improve productivity by learning the tools and understanding the options for making the politics involved in most any project work for you. Although "Cain and Abel" is an easy-to-read, well-written book, there's just nothing revolutionary about it and it gives so few ideas about how to succeed in spite of a political environment.

            5 out of 5 stars NOW I KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING!!.......2001-03-22

Whatever you do after reading this incredibly insightful book, DO NOT run to the Cains in your life to tell them about it. Don't let them know that you're onto them! Just protect yourself with the teachings of this book. Make sure you are prepared for those tough situations - you'll even have fun secretly catching your coworkers doing some of the things these authors talk about. What a fun and informative read!

Daniel Rippy's Sizing Up a Start-Up is a comprehensive guide for anyone considering a job with a freshly minted entry in the realm of the New Economy. Rippy, himself a former employee at a technology start-up, is currently responsible for evaluating new business development opportunities for Johnson & Johnson. He offers step-by-step advice for those weighing the undeniable excitement, meteoric pace, and unlimited promise of the high-tech start-up against the very real risks that invariably go with the territory. To that end, the author includes commentary and counsel from others who have already been there and done that. The book covers just about everything you'll need to decide whether to join the 3-million-plus Americans who've already taken the plunge. Its overview on start-ups in general has tips for figuring out the organizational stage a particular company has reached. There's helpful advice for determining one's tolerance for career risk, along with solid descriptions of techniques that should be brought to bear on any high-tech job search: utilizing interviews, being observant, and reviewing the job offer itself. Rippy can't tell you if a particular job is a good one, but his book can certainly help you logically sort out its benefits and drawbacks. --Howard Rothman

Frankly, I don't think its worth the money. Some decent facts in here but not too interesting- but it might put you to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Start Me Up!.......2001-06-06

Sizing Up a Start-Up is a great read for anyone considering a career move. Rippy uses quotes from start-up veterans along with his own experiences to accurately describe the work environment, management expectations and life cycle of a start-up. He ties these subjects together by asking the reader "What is your risk tolerance?" and "What do you value in a career?".

After determining if a start-up is right for you, you can then read on to gain important interviewing and salary negotiating tips. Rippy stresses the value of researching a company before an interview and gives heads-up and specific advice about what types of questions you should and should not ask in an interview. Next, Dan discusses what one could expect from a typical compensation package at a start-up. Unlike other books, Rippy takes this subject one step further and outlines strategies to not only maximize, but also value your compensation package.

As a recent graduate from a leading MBA program, I personally found this book to be insightful and helpful during my job selection process. It helped me prepare better and more though provoking questions during the interviews, negotiate better compensation packages, and more importantly, make a decision that I will be happy with in the next few years.

5 out of 5 stars A wealth of useful information and insight for entrepreneurs.......2001-02-14

Sizing Up A Start-Up: Decoding The New Frontier Of Career Opportunities offer the reader invaluable, practical methods for making sound employment and career decisions in the new high-tech communications industries, with particular reference to the so called "dot.com" companies. Daniel Rippy shows how to distinguish a company poised to succeed from one doomed to collapse. Sizing Up A Start-Up is "must" reading for job seekers, and has a wealth of useful information and insight for entrepreneurs and investors considering the commercial viability of high-tech industries.

            5 out of 5 stars Risk/Reward.......2001-02-14

From the eyes and experiencial background of a "headhunter" engaged in executive search and a banker in my former life, I found the book a facinating exercise not only for one who is considering whether to take the leap with a START-UP or anyone uncertain with their own career choice. The process developed by Mr. Rippy allows the reader to evaluate and measure their own entrepreneurial instincts and risk tollerance which is applicable in many walks of business both "new" economy and old.

Interviewing is more of an art and than a science, however, the process the author has outined removes the happenstance and should assure a good "fit".

This book is going into my office library for reference to definitions as well as the investment banking terminlogy often confussed. Hats off to Rippey ... Well done!

5 out of 5 stars a must read for anyone even THINKING of a start up.......2000-08-31

Let me preface this by saying that I'm about as "non-techie" as it gets, and I still found this book extremely readable and interesting. Rippy is an acknowledged expert in the field of tech. start ups and takes both the experienced and the lay business person on a step by step process of the birth (and sometimes death)of these burgeoning companies. Sure, there is always the chance that your IPO will make you a billionaire, but Rippy makes it clear that in more than 90% of all start ups, that is usually far from the case. He does not try to discourage anyone from entering the field, but he does provide realistic tools and methods for evaluating a company's viability at every differrent stage. Like children, these tech. start ups have an organizational birth stage, adolescence, adulthood and death. If you understand the financial implications at every phase, you will be much better equipped to make a decision in this tremendous marketplace. Even for people like me who are just small business oriented, this book provides dozens of insights into the business world, stocks, IPO's, that go beyond the scope of start up companies. In order to keep up with the technological revolution, this book should be required reading for anyone with even an eye towards the business world. The chapters on venture capitalists and the companies they fund make for particularly interesting reading. Mr. Rippy's engaging and knowledgeable style throughout make this book a winner.

            5 out of 5 stars Practical help.......2002-12-03

The sleep training philosophy is similiar to the Ferber method, but we found this book more helpful with lots of practical examples and suggestions. For example, our baby was standing in the crib and we didn't know what to do. Easy to read - I finished in an evening. Our infant cried for less than an hour the first night, half hour the second and then was sleeping through the night. I did not like the idea of letting our baby cry at all, but after 10 months I decided that a couple nights of a little crying probably would not scar him emotionally. Frequent checks allows you to know he is ok. Now he goes right to sleep with no struggle and hardly a wimper. Having friends who still can't get their three year old to sleep we decided it was better to deal with this earlier than later.

5 out of 5 stars Does solve your baby's sleeping problems!.......1999-02-02

this book is a miracle!. After nothing had helped we tried this book because we were given it. Within three days our 2 year old son slept the whole night, without waking up! We could not believe it. It takes some energy to follow the book's strategy after all letting your baby cry is not fun at all. The idea is that you let him cry but go and look every 20 minutes, in order to let your baby know that you are still there and to make sure he's allright. Like this your baby learns to sleep BY HIMSELF. That is essential. Try it if you have problems. Jos Schuring, Haarlem Holland.

IN A NUTSHELL: ORGANIZED INTO 6 TACTICAL PURPOSES WITH DETAIL

SO WHAT IS IN THIS VOLUME?

BOTTOM LINE: ALL NORMAN FRIEDMAN'S BOOKS ARE A JOY FOR THE NAVAL ENTHUSIAST

It just doesn't get much better than this for understanding the purpose, development and utilization of nearly every significant naval weapon in use by the U.S. Navy since 1983.

Another volume for weapons since 1983, or an enlarged update to include all developments since 1983 along with the earlier work is now sorely needed. It is not that this volume needs improvement, far from it, but much has happened to affect the tactical requirements of the U.S. Navy since the end of the Cold War, and so their arsenal has evolved as a result of their changing roles.

This is a complete revise of an earlier book issued under the same title. Like Mark Twain observed, to write of the gold rush and ignore its carnage would be like writing of Mormonism without referring to polygamy. In one California gold camp, a man was hanged for horse stealing. It was later found out, after the hanging, that the man was actually innocent. The penitent vigilante mob sent a messenger to the widow of the wrongly hanged man. "We hanged Jim for stealing a horse," the messenger told the widow. "But come to find out, he didn't do it, so I guess the joke's on us." Not all was so callous in the gold camps, and we promise you a good trek if you'll join us.
