Book Description

Peter Blundell Jones details the inadequacy of the first histories of the Modern Movement by revealing the existence of suppressed alternative traditions within the movement and shows their great diversity through the use of case studies. Each case is analysed in detail then used as a springboard to explore different theoretical approaches.

Case studies are shown to be the most effective way to explore this diversity and to get closer to the buildings discussed. Blundell Jones uses the Weissenhof as a general comparative study that is followed by single examples by chosen architects, each taking a particular set of themes.

* Reappraise the modern movement with this informative, scholarly and insightful text
* Learn a new approach to the debates surrounding modern architecture and theory
* Case studies illustrate the theory in a clear and accessible style

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary book.......2007-06-29

Peter Blundell Jones is one of the very few contemporary architectural teachers/critics/reviewers/historians out there that actually creates architectural knowledge when he writes. He is an architect to begin with, just like all the (few) other writers in this British architectural writing tradition. In this book he walks the reader through several masterpieces of the 20th century, articulating in written the key architectural thoughts as they are made manifest in each of the built designs.
His precise, clear, knowledgeable, solid, illuminating prose makes the pseudo-architectural-babble dominating much of academia and the architectural fashion press industry crumble to pieces --which is a reason why this book should be read as early as possible by every architectural student, and will feel like a breath of fresh air for everybody else even if already somehow familiar with the buildings.
It is an excellent introduction to several essential buildings you will want to study in detail through publications and visits. It is an excellent introduction to true architectural observation and analyisis. And it is an excellent introduction to architectural thought. Like with all good books, you will want to come back to it again and again over the years.

    Book Description

Once again, new interpretations are presented of some of the most famous architecture of the period. Work by lesser-known architects, whose influence and role have been overlooked by conventional histories of the subject, is discussed. The case study structure allows each example to be discussed and used as a springboard to explore different theoretical approaches. Filled with beautiful photographs, plans and architect's drawings, this is a clear and accessible discussion on a period of architecture that engages many questions still under debate in architecture today.

    * The second instalment of this unique commentary on modern architecture
    * Provides the reader with a fresh approach to the analysis of post-war architecture
    * Beautifully illustrated case studies provide an accessible and inspiring source of information

                    Book Description

Why do some economies seem to excel at effective pollution management while others seem to miss the mark when responding to deteriorating urban environments?

These studies of pollution management in East Asia's newly industrialized economies (NIEs) include successful government responses in Singapore and Taiwan, qualified results in China and Indonesia, and much more limited success in Thailand and Malaysia. In each example, Michael Rock considers the starting point of the economy as it began its path toward industrialization in the post World War II period. He discusses the relevant historical and political context, the pressures placed on the political system from domestic and international sources, and the influence of ongoing trends in East Asia for democratization and economic liberalization.

Rock's text makes it clear that each economy found unique, innovative ways to link environmental protection to its own political and economic institutions. Thus, while public pressure from both home and abroad gave strong impetus to successful programs in Taiwan, the development of policy in Singapore involved limited public review and a centralized, government-led process. The result of Rock's research is a book that provides important lessons without being reductionist. The book offers insights to apply to pollution management in a diverse range of developing nations, but it avoids attempts for precise prescriptions, or universally appealing, normative answers.

"The best, most up-to-date discussion of what happened with respect to pollution control in the East Asian NIEs over the past three decades." -- David P. Angel, Clark University

"A rigorous assessment of policy regimes; a significant contribution to scholarship on governance and the environment"-- Ooi Giok Ling, The Institute of Policy Studies, Singapore

                              Book Description

This book honors the memory of Allan Sproul, the third chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, having been its President from January 1941 until he retired in June 1956. He came to the New York Federal Reserve Bank as Secretary in 1930, after serving during the twenties at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

The book includes speeches, articles, Congressional testimony, internal memoranda and letters of this great central banker.

His interest in public policy and central banking was lifelong. Those who knew him were invariably impressed with the breadth of his vision combined with technical competence, the strength of his convictions combined with a grace and temperance in intellectual combat, the sense of dignity and position combined with a warmth of personal friendship. During his presidency of the "New York Fed", he stimulated a whole generation of Federal Reserve officials to find their careers in central banking and related professions, fostering monetary stability in this country and international economic cooperation. Throughout his "retirement", he continued to support those causes, consulting with those from Presidents on down who sought his judgement.

The volume of his writings, published and unpublished, bears testimony to the scope of his interests and the quality of his thought. A representative selection from these writings is of more than historical interest and a fitting memorial for a great central banker.

4 out of 5 stars The orginal "principle approach" to business........2003-03-02

If you have heard the saying "there is nothing new under the sun", then it must apply to the principles of the Book of Proverbs and how they apply to business thousands of years after they were written. This is an excellent book, and a timeless look at how basic principles guiding human behavior apply in the workplace.

Often in western business there is an attempt to assume that "business" and "religion" don't mix and that somehow the Judeo-Christian value system outlined in the Bible is better left at the door when coming to work. However, nothing could be further from the truth. As outlined in this book, Proverbs gave us all sound advise that for thousands of years has helped people be successful in their work and business interactions.

The recent headlines of 2002 and 2003 about the lack of workplace ethics, costly corporate scandals and allegations of management fraud that dominate the business section and wiped out the retirement accounts and employment of countless employees, demonstrate that these principles are needed now more than ever. One look at the chapter/principle headings and one might assume these principles are right out of a Covey or Drucker book. This book gives some insight into the possible origins of many of the popular business and management philosophies.

Some of the principles discussed include "Value employee input", "Invest in Employee training", "Regard profit as a means not an end", "Measure performance validly", "Measure twice, hire once", and many more principles which when applied effectively will increase the success of any business venture. Each chapter examines the passages in Proverbs, provides examples of real-life business stories demonstrating them in action, and discusses the manner in which they may be applied.

Overall, this book is a must for anyone who manages people, or engages in running a business. The focus on the right priorities, and the right methods to achieve results is sound and relevant in today's business climate, as it has been for thousands of years. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable piece of work.......2000-06-30

This is simply a phenominal book. Rarely do we business folks find a combination of good business practice and careful scripture study in one volume. The author is apparently both a business professor and a seminarian, and it shows. All you have to do is look at the footnotes to see that this guy knows his stuff. But it's not an academic book. It's among the most readable business resources I've found in a long time -- sort of in the vein of Covey and Blanchard. Besides all that, there is a wealth of managerial and leadership wisdom in here -- tips that, as the author says, are both timeless and road-tested. I'm looking forward to reading Zigarelli's other work.

This book is good reading for someone who would like to see how companies have seen rules from the Bible apply to their operation. Many of these principles can be used in daily life in the working world. It gives some good ideas to ponder.

"A growing body of scientific evidence clearly shows that most cancers can be prevented, not through new medical breakthroughs or miracle drugs, but simply through the way we live," writes the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), which has been conducting cancer research and education programs since 1982. "Researchers now estimate that 60 percent to 70 percent of all cancers are directly linked to the foods we eat and related lifestyle factors, including smoking, exercise, and obesity." Stopping Cancer Before It Starts distills the research findings into changes you can make to reduce your risk. Does exercise have to be 30 minutes of aerobics? Does protein increase cancer risk? What's the big deal about fiber? What is a serving of fruits and vegetables, anyway? Each chapter topic or subtopic ends with "the take home message" which helps you translate the information into action. Plenty of self-tests and charts personalize the information. The book ends with 100 recipes to help you "go for the adventure" of expanding your healthful-food repertoire. Intriguing recipes include Carrot and Red Lentil Pâté, Kidney Bean and Quinoa Chowder, Confetti Meatloaf (made with ground turkey), Sicilian Spaghetti with Swordfish, and Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms (stuffed with kasha, potatoes, and onion). Unfortunately, nutritional breakdown is skimpy, including only calories and fat grams. --Joan Price

The American Institute for Cancer Research has long been known as a leader in the field of diet, nutrition and cancer. This new handbook for cancer prevention presents findings from some of the latest research in this field and translates it into practical actions anyone can take for lower cancer risk.

While most of the basic advice may seem fairly common sense (eat more fruits and vegetables, avoid being overweight, stay physically active) the unfortunate truth is that too few people actually practice most of it. This book provides a good insight into the role that various factors, such as diet, exercise and obesity, play in cancer prevention. It combines solid information with practical ideas for making lifestyle changes for lower cancer risk. According to the book, more than 375,000 cases of cancer in just the U.S. could be prevented through simple dietary and lifestyle changes.

The book also provides a wide range of recipes that illustrate how to prepare foods that are not only helpful in lowering cancer risk, but that are also interesting and exciting eating.

No book can lower cancer risk -- that result can only happen when a reader absorbs the advice and makes practical changes. But this book provides a good source of reliable information, plus a lot of very practical advice to help make the process much easier.

4 out of 5 stars A Near Disaster for the Americans.......2004-06-29

After securing Guadalcanal in February of 1943, the Joint Chiefs began to decide where to stike at the Japanese next. It was decided that a thrust into the Central Pacific island groups of the Marshalls and Gilberts would be the objective, with the island of Tarawa in the Gilberts to be taken first. What happened on that tiny island in the Central Pacific can only be described as some of the bloodiest fighting of the war and a near disaster for the Americans.

Tarawa is surrounded by a coral reef which reaches as much as a half mile out into the ocean. Preliminary reports stated that the tide should have been high enough for the invasion fleet to successfully navigate over the reef, but the reports proved to be wrong. Much of the reef was exposed, so men were forced to wade in chest-deep water up to a half mile to the beach while facing murderous Japanese fire.

The pre-invasion bombardment of the island destroyed much of the above-ground buildings and outposts, but the Japanese had spend considerable time and labor constructing bunkers and pillboxes made from coral, logs, and concrete so strong that only a direct hit from a heavy bomb or shell could successuflly knock them out. These positions proved to be deadly for the Americans, as many were constructed to provide covering fire for other positions.

Once ashore, the Americans faced a fanatical enemy who refused to surrender. Many Japanese were literally burned alive by flamethrowers or blown to bits by grenades.

The losses of the battle were horrific for both sides. The Japanese lost virtually every man, while the casualties the Americans suffered were unlike any ever seen, and only matched by Iwo Jima and Okinawa. A battle that was supposed to last but a few hours turned into a week-long struggle for survival.

I felt this book did a good job of describing the decision to attack the Gilberts and Marshalls, and the description of the battle for both sides was well done. The quotes from veterans were essential to understanding the true essence of the battle, and the author supplies many quotes throughout the book. I recommend this book. It gives a good basic description of one of the bloodiest battles the Americans fought against the Japanese and the lessons learned from it.

Author isn't a gripping storyteller. He pails in comparison to Alistair Horne (VERDUN), Max Hastings (THE KOREAN WAR) or Cornelius Ryan (THE LONGEST DAY). He slips in uninformative quotes like a college History major with a desk full of notes he refuses to pare down (ie. Nimitz to Spruance:"Spru, you are lucky.") for a term paper. Uses too much military jargon and too many abreviations for your non-expert. Details the landing quite well; the reader gets a good feel of the terror and carnage. In comparison, the marines drive inland from the beaches should have been told in greater detail. Author paints a good picture of several of the marines, especially the legendary William "Hawk" Hawkins who died in the fighting. Mr. Graham does a decent job with his material; the heroes of Tarawa deserve a greater writer to tell their courageous story.

5 out of 5 stars illuminating and pulls no punches.......1998-08-17

After seeing "Saving Private Ryan," the most moving and authentic WWII movie thus far, I was moved to better understand the war my father fought in. He has never shared his experiences and now I know why. He was 2nd Marines 3rd wave at Tarawa. What a battle. I always knew that my dad and those Marines were heroes and now this book has helped me to understand why. I hope that a "realistic" movie is made about Tarawa because that battle must stand as one of the quintessential Marine Corps battles of all times. This book is a good read.

This book is fantastic! I learned more in two days with this book than an entire semester in a college classroom. I love the writing. Some of the pieces read like novels. I do wish there were more illustrations, but one can't have everything. And I agree with the review by Clint from Texas that the guy from Turtle Island or where ever definitely has an agenda. ... Whoever reads this, listen to me, "this book belongs in your collection." I just hope there is a volume two in the works.

5 out of 5 stars Totally different opinion.......2002-10-04

After reading the first review from Turtle Island, I wonder if he is reading the same book that I am. After some reflection, it occurs to me that the reviewer has much more of an issue with his own limited perceptions than with this book. I found WARRIOR PEOPLES to be informative, educational, VERY useful as a research tool, and amazingly well-written. It would be interesting to see what actual credentials the Turtle Island reviewer possesses; he certainly cites no concrete examples, but instead engages in unfounded and obviously biased criticisms. I give WARRIOR PEOPLES five stars; any military historian or history buff would do well to have this book in their libraries.

1 out of 5 stars There's no such thing as "warrior peoples ".......2002-03-12

This book probably deserves 2-3 stars for the quantity of information it contains, but the quality is quite another matter. Throwing warrior peoples in with fighting groups, e.g. the Green Berets or the Long Range Desert Group from World War Two, simply lumps together units which have little or no connection (beyond merely being warriors) except possibly in the mind of the authors. The result is a work which has no conceptual coherence apart from whatever interest the authors may stimulate in their audience.

Even taking this work on its own terms, there are many omissions among "warrior peoples;" only the best-known are included, such as Gurkhas in the Indian or British Army, or Zulus from South Africa. Others who have ben labeled in this fashion, such as the Ila of Zambia or the Ngoni of Malawi and Mozambique, simply aren't here. But the Sikhs are included, despite their assigned role in British India as police, not soldiers. So it is conceived in vague, even misleading terms.

The grossest flaw, however, is that "warrior peoples" simply do not exist, except in the colonial mindset that pigeonholed and then drafted/enlisted them. The term is presumably updated from "warrior races," which is archaic to say the least. But no peoples are naturally more suited to be warriors than others; their history or circumstances may impel them or compel them to combat, but not heredity. People may resemble a warrior race if one looks only at the warriors, but this slights the full range of human endeavor pursued by all human groups.

There are also some factual errors which tend to limit the book's value for reference, and the deceptively long bibliography omits key works which might aid readers (and the authors) in critically analyzing their preconceptions. Cf. Cynthia Enloe's book "Ethnic Soldiers," and Anthony Kirk-Greene's article "Damnosa Hereditas," in Ethnic and Racial Studies.

Though this book has been recommended by reviewers for high-school students and other readers, it may actually interfere with their understanding by encouraging them to think in terms of ethnic and racial stereotypes. For those willing to think critically, rather than stereotypically, about warfare's relation to forms of group identity, this book is simply not satisfactory.

                                              Book Description

This book covers in unmatched detail the life history, relationships, biology, and conservation of all the world's toucans, barbets, and honeyguides. These number 133 species, found in tropical regions around the world. The toucans are especially well-known because of their dramatic bills and their association with the Amazon rainforest. The authors have been working with these birds for over 20 years, and their knowledge and expertise in these groups is unrivalled. Much of the information in this book has never previously been published. The colour plates, painted by well-known US artist Albert Earl Gilbert, are probably the best paintings of these birds ever produced.
