Modern Makeovers For Older Homes.......2004-01-08
There are plenty of books on home renovation, but very few on modern renovations and additions for older homes, and fewer still that have the quantity of examples, images and floor plans that this book has. In this book the additions and renovations are contemporary whereas most of the homes are older and more traditional. At 228 pages with 300 photos, editors Il Kim and James Grayson Trulove have the space to present these unique American makeovers in detail. New American Additions and Renovations is intended for the professional community of practitioners and clients but will appeal to any fan of architecture.
Adding to a House - With Rigor.......2003-10-25
This book brings together twenty-five additions/renovations. Most of these projects are what I term avante garde, or object like home additions, meaning that the new portion of the building relates to, but does not necessarily match the existing building. It is interesting to compare and contrast this book to Taunton Press' "Design Ideas for Great American Houses - Additions" which features more conservatively designed seamless additions - also an excellent addition sourcebook.
Most of the projects are designed by seasoned and up and coming young architects. In most cases there is a display of exceptional rigor, which makes these projects very unpredictable. Most projects employ superb craftsmanship. The book's large format makes a beautiful presentation of these projects. As the owner of an architectural firm that does a lot of additions, I found this book to be a great inspiration and highly recommend it.
Book Description
The memoirs of Nannette Rothschild are the basis for this unique exhibition catalogue, which chronicles the formation of Herbert and Nannette Rothschild's distinguished collection of early twentieth-century art. Tales of their adventures and evolving friendships with artists, dealers, fellow collectors, conservators, and curators in Europe and America paint their own picture of the challenges facing collectors at the midpoint of this century. Guided in their choices by their daughter Judith, herself a painter, the Rothschilds affirmed their inexhaustible enthusiasm for Cubist, Futurist, Dadaist, and Surrealist works, as well as for the artists themselves. With an introductory essay that places the Rothschilds' involvement in a broader context, the resulting volume is a provocative and uncommonly personal glimpse into the world of art collecting. Bibliography. Index.

Close encounters of the modern kind.......2005-10-02
This is a lovely book, a work of art in and of itself. From the cover with images of Brancusi's 'The Muse' and Mondrian's 'Tableau No. IV', through the full-colour plates, single-colour dividing pages, black-and-white personal photographs, gracious layout with generous white space, to the gold-on-black printed back cover, this book is a delight to read, a delight to look at, and a delight to hold.
The story is really a trek through modern art in America and Europe, seen through the eyes of the Rothschilds, Herbert, Nannette and Judith. Judith Rothschild was a painter; her parents Herbert and Nannette were avid students, admirers and collectors of art, following their daughter's career as well as expanding beyond this to encompass the whole range of modern art. The Rothschilds built an impressive collection, supporting many artists and providing art for museums and exhibitions regularly.
This was not just a passion for art, but also a building of personal relationships. 'Very often and not surprisingly, the passion for collecting art by living artists was (and still is) fueled by friendship with artists themselves.' The reminiscences of Nanette go through artist by artist - Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, and many other artists are featured, together with a memory of special events and trips. There is a good combination of the personal and the artistic in these writings, a journal of very intimate appreciation.
Finally, the Catalogue of the artworks from the Rothschilds' collections is a real treat. Herbert and Nannette left the bulk of their collection to their daughter Judith, with some items going to their other two children; Judith in turn left her collection (that of Herbert and Nannette together with pieces she had acquired herself) to a Foundation to support underappreciated American artists. This catalogue is a wonder to behold, with very high production values in the reprinting of artwork, including painting, sculpture, and other media.
A wonderful collection.

Book Description
The discussion of the certification of forest systems has, until recently, revolved largely around the forests and those landowners who elect to invest in certification. However, the response of wood products manufacturers to certification efforts and their willingness to work with certified wood is as important to the acceptance of certification as timber producers' willingness to adopt it. If certification is, as many argue, incentive-based and market-driven, then a system must be in place beyond the forest that tracks certified wood flow through to finished products for consumers. Between the forest and the consumer stands the wood product manufacturer. Wood product manufacturers have their own set of criteria for deciding if and when to invest in certification. Some argue that in the present environment investment in certification is premature, since many questions about its economic viability and performance remain unanswered. They ask, for instance:
- Is there documented demand of sufficient size for certified wood products in the marketplace to warrant manufacturers to change their traditional business practices?
- Can a wood product manufacturer capture a premium off the sale of certified wood products?
- Is there added market and business advantage to offering certified wood products that is demonstrated in either increased product market share and/or increased company visibility?
- Can a manufacturer be cost competitive in product development if required to separate certified and noncertified wood supply and finished product at the production facility?
- Can certified wood production make a positive difference to the business bottom line?
.
The business case surrounding Colonial Craft provides some surprising answers.

Book Description
There are a few occupations of the 40,000 known occupations each of us were best genetically designed to do in good health. By making people aware of their in-born maximum talent capability, which they do not know they possess, this book can help them to enjoy a successful, healthful, fulfilling, career and accomplish what they were probably intended to accomplish.
Customer Reviews:
Talent discovery is the adventure of your lifetime........1998-09-25
This delightful book convinces you to take the time to discover your own unique talents by exploring your own inner dialogue. Somebody is trying to advise you about the wonderful talents already at your disposal--and that somebody is YOU! Your genetic structure knows the talents you were given at birth. Find out how to be more honest about what happens in your daily life and your "mentor" will bring you amazing results.
A gentic new approach to finding meaningful careers........1998-07-17
I am tired of taking tests that tell me nothing I can use and high sounding book promoters who tell me, I can do this and that to give me self-esteem and grow rich. I don't want to know what they think I can do, I want to know what I genetically am and what my mind and body was best designed to do. Companies keep employees in a state of anxiety, fear and uncertainty: they make it plain they value people less than the bottom line.I need to know my Maximum Talent Capability to be in control of my future and regain my confidence. Talent Discovery has proven to me that I have value in in-born but hidden ability and places me on the trail to uncover those abilities and how to find the occupation they fit best. This refreshing book The Key To Your Unknown Talen, has told me more about myself and what I can do best than all the reading and seminars I ever attended.
A new and fundamental approach to career exploration........1998-06-16
There are a lot of books and articles published to date on career exploration and planning. None of them in my opinion have made the contribution that Donald E. Seymour has made in his book "The Key To Your Unknown Talent". Mr Seymour realized that it all first starts with the discovery of the uniqueness of each and every human being rather than first trying to figure out what the market wants.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting theory but unsubstantiated..........2004-05-12
This isn't a guide to diet during pregnancy, but rather an interesting theory on Pregnancy Sickness--and it's not the most well documented study by any means. I didn't buy it for it's scientific merit though, I bought it because I've had severe morning sickness since my 5th week and I was hoping it would guide me towards some good choices to eat or at the very least some safe choices for foods I wouldn't immediately throw up. But that's not really what the book is for, so if that is what you're after look elsewhere--cause despite the title this really isn't a very helpful book for pregnant women dealing with morning sickness. It's an interesting book, but not really a helpful one. Profet argued that food aversions, nausea, and vomiting associated with pregnancy evolved during the course of human evolution to protect the embryo against maternal ingestion of toxins. She suggests that pregnancy sickness represents a lowering of the usual human threshold of tolerance to toxins in order to compensate for the extreme vulnerability of the embryo to toxins during organogenesis, the period of maximum susceptibility to toxins. Interesting stuff, but what does it say you CAN eat? Well, Profet recommends a variety of grains (especially processed grains, with husks removed), most fruits (not tomatoes), garbanzo beans, mild cheeses and some non-bitter vegetables such as green beans and peas.
Interesting reading, but not too practical.......2003-08-17
Most of the reviews on this book are misleading. First of all, this book does NOT help you avoid the symptoms of "pregnancy sickness" (which is Profet's term for "morning sickness," as it is not just a condition in the morning). Unfortunately, that is why I bought the book. What I received instead was a lot of evolutionary theory (Profet is an evolutionary biologist, according to the too-brief bio), which, although interesting, is not exactly what I'm looking for, since nausea has slammed into my 6th week like a ton of bricks. Also, as Profet herself admits, much of the book is not based on scientific evidence, but many cross-cultural observations and some tests on animals. Hardly stunning proof of her conclusions. I agree with one reader that it may be comforting to hear an explanation for why vegetables may not exactly be appealing at this point in pregnancy; however, I need more information as to what TO eat, as what NOT to eat is becoming abundantly clear with each passing day. This is Profet's weakness. Bottom line: if you're interested in how evolutionary theory ties into your overwhelming desire to toss your cookies every minute of the day during pregnancy, then this book is for you. Otherwise, skip it and find something more practical (and grounded in actual research).
If you want to avoid nausea during pregnancy read this book........2002-11-03
This book was absolutely amazing in that it explained the physiological reasons for many of the bizzare ways my body was behaving. I followed what the book said and did not experience a single day of pregnancy sickness. I have told friends about it and they have all been able to avert nausea. I would recommend it to anyone in the early stages of a pregnancy.
Thought-provoking.......2000-01-15
This book is a fascinating look at an interesting theory - that pregnant women experience "pregnancy sickness" as a way of protecting the rapidly growing embryo from toxins in foods that are not harmful to adults. While I didn't 100 percent buy the concept, I found the theory incredibly interesting and believe that the author gives a great deal of information to back up her beliefs. It was reassuring to know that my pregnancy sickness is normal and may exist for a good reason. It also made me feel better to know that it is normal and probably beneficial to be avoiding most vegetables, since before I had thought that I was being "bad" by not eating a well-balanced diet. Anyone experiencing pregnancy sickness would probably find this book helpful and interesting.
A ground breaking book on an under investigated topic.......1999-02-06
Margie Profet's book has come under some criticism for advising pregnant women to "not eat vegetables." Those who make this criticism have not carefully read her book! What she actually says is that pregnant women in their first trimester (which she refers to as the embryo stage) may find themselves avoiding/becoming nauseated by strong smelling foods such as broccoli, garlic, brussels spouts, onions etc. She states that this may be a natural, evolutionary development due in part to the fact that such plants contain toxins that can seriously harm the very vulnerable embryo. Margie Profet states several times that she only wishes to get the information out to first trimester women about the dangers of plant toxins and that it is not her intention to dole out dietary information. The difficulty with this information (and Profet clearly states this several times) is that research on the effects of plant toxins on embryos is seriously lacking. I really like how Margie Profet divides the pregnancy into two parts (the embryo stage and the fetal or growing stage) instead of three parts (the three trimesters) as most books and health care providers do. She makes a good case for the logic of this division : the baby is developing ,growing new organs and limbs in the embryo stage and is growing larger and is less susceptible to toxins during the fetal stage. Some people might find this book a little dry, especially if they are unfamiliar with scientific methods. However, Profet's consistent citing of scientific studies only legitimizes her arguments. This book is a must read for all pregnant women/couples.
Book Description
The Life and Adventures of John Nicol, Mariner is a recently rediscovered text that vividly renders the unforgettable story of a man whom history has nearly forgotten. In his many voyages the Scottish-born sailor John Nicol twice circumnavigated the globe, visiting every inhabited continent while witnessing and participating in many of the greatest events of exploration and adventure in the eighteenth century. During his career he battled pirates, traded with Native Americans, and fought for the British navy in the American and French Revolutions. In Hawaii he was entertained by the king's court mere days after the murder of Captain James Cook. In Jamaica he saw firsthand the horrors of the slave system and befriended slaves who invited him to join in their dance celebrations. En route to Australia he would meet the love of his life, Sarah Whitlam, a convict bound for the Botany Bay prison colony, who would bear his son before duty forced them apart forever.
An international bestseller, The Life and Adventures of John Nicol, Mariner is a rousing memoir of an ordinary man's extraordinary life, a great, true adventure tale.

History At It's Very Best: This is how history should be learned........2007-03-22
This is gripping history as seen by the average participant in it. It's not about Admirals or Generals or World Leaders, it's about everyman and every woman. I first learned about John Nicol from another excellent history book "The Floating Brothel: The Extraordinary True Story of an Eighteenth-Century Ship and its Cargo of Female Convicts" by Sian Rees. John Nicol was on that extraordinary voyage and his memoir done when he was in his 60's was the only first-hand account of those voyages. I decided to seek out his memoir. After reading either of these two books, the readers will probably no longer yern for a romatic voyage on an ancient sailing vessel. Life wasn't pleasant on those sea voyages for anybody on board. The story of how John Nicol's story was eventually dictated to John Howell, an Edinburgh book binder who found him wandering the streets is also amazing. Howell is another average guy who made a great contribution to history through small acts of charity and publishing.
Interesting and entertaining; if only it were longer!.......2001-02-15
I love nautical fiction set during the age of sail (O'Brian, Pope, Kent, etc.) and so I enjoyed this memoir of a real-life sailor from this period. There are two disappointing things about this book though; it's very short (only about 160 pages if you exclude the introduction) and Nicol doesn't spend very much time relating events from the voyages themselves or his day-to-day life in the Royal Navy. Nicol mostly describes the places he visited and the cultures of the people who lived in those places. He does do a wonderful job describing these people and places, and he does it without being long-winded. He also relates a few humorous stories and gives us some details of his personal life, such as his ill-fated romance with a convict during their journey to Australia. Animal rights advocates and environmentalists would be horrified by one of his voyages in which he claims that he and his crew clubbed about thirty thousand seals plus many sea-lions. The way I look at it though, it was just a very different, more primative age. In any case, I enjoyed this book, and only wish that it had been longer and more detailed.
A fascinating story.......2000-09-02
This account was first published in 1822, and has been republished with a forward and added footnotes by the editor. Unlike most seamen in the Royal Navy, John Nicol enlisted for the adventure, first serving at the age of 21 as a ship's cooper during the American Revolution, mostly in Canada and the West Indies. For the next 25 years he served on a large number of Royal Navy and merchant ships. He was present at some well known battles including the victories by Admiral Jervis at Cape St. Vincent and Admiral Nelson at Aboukir Bay. In the merchant service, he went to China 3 times, to Australia, Hawaii, the west coast of the Americas from Cape Horn to Alaska, Brazil and Portugal, and to the West Indies. He served aboard whalers and sealers that took him to Greenland and the Falkland Islands.
As noted by the editor, mortality rates among seamen at that time could average 15 percent per year from disease, shipwrecks, accidents aboard ship, or armed conflicts. John Nicol was one of the minority who survived to old age. He had saved his money and would have been reasonably well off ashore, but he married a cousin, and then abandoned a well paid trade as a cooper to escape the Royal Navy press gangs after 1801 and stay with his wife. He was a widower living in poverty when offered the opportunity to publish his story.
This is a well written account by a man who had only a basic formal education. I would highly recommend it as a "must read" book for readers interested in naval and merchant marine service of that time period. The book contains many tidbits of information not available elsewhere, including his recollections of female convicts in the second fleet to sail for New South Wales.
The ordinary life in an extraordinary time.......1999-05-28
This is the life of an ordinary seaman at the time of the beginning of scientific exploration. John Nicol a seaman on the voyages of discovery and later trade to Australia, the Americas and to Africa. He observed life of the captains, the ordinary men at sea and the people of the lands he visited. He went to sea at an early age was imprisoned, married and lived to 94 and died in England. The diarys are a remarkable work of an eyewitness to history. It is written and edited in an easly readable style and brings history to life.

Anti-semitism its History and Causes by Bernard Lazare.......2007-05-28
An early study of this historical phenomenon, with a good introductory section. Reject it or not, it makes a refreshing change from the current declamations on anti-semitism. A useful first step towards understanding some current rabinical religious justifications for the extermination camps.
It widens perspectives beyond the narrow British views of a war in which they smashed Europe and the English Empire. Given the post-war disaster almost any means is used these days to justify the demands for unconditional surrender, which made a Pyrrhic victory the only possible outcome. So:- perhaps a refreshing step towards reconsidering the self-righteousness of the secular liberals?
Book Description
“A thoughtful examination of the machinery of extinction . . . By turns harrowing and elegiac, thrilling and informative.” —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times
Three or four times an hour, eighty or more times a day, a unique species of plant or animal vanishes forever. And yet, every so often one of these lost species resurfaces. “Having adventures most of us can only dream about” (The Times-Picayune), Scott Weidensaul pursues stories of loss and recovery, of endurance against the odds, and of surprising resurrections.

ghost with trembling wings.......2006-12-14
Quite an interesting book, and in some ways, rather haunting. There is a lot more to this book than the somewhat small size of it would seem.It is also somewhat engrossing.
Dude, Where's My Book?.......2006-08-22
Uh, like it's difficult to review a book that I haven't, like, received yet, dudes. Maybe if you didn't keep, like, pushing the delivery date to the right, I could maybe, like, have something more constructive to contribute.
A gorgeous mind-opener.......2006-02-06
For 310 of the most engrossing pages about things that live on earth, you won't do much better than Scott Wiedensaul's The Ghost With Trembling Wings. I came at the book with virtually no science ability and only a passing knowledge of naturalism or species conservation, but it doesn't matter - Trembling Wings works so effectively because all it really requires to catch onto Wiedensaul's point of view is any sort of awe at the variety of organisms and the varied regions in which they show up. Wiedensaul's prose is transporting in the best way - he gives the mosquito-encrusted white reaches of Siberia the same impressive eloquence that he gives the rivers of Louisiana or the Mato Grasso region of Brazil. His eloquence is so surprising, he manages to find poetry in the everyday actions of species, fascinating or not. Check out this description simply of film footage of the Thylacine in Tasmania: "Though the thylacine was said to be stiff and awkward in its movements, this one seemed as graceful as the cramped, artificial surroundings would permit; the film showed a lithe, tapered animal, but to an eye used to a dog or wolf, the proportions seemed a bit off - the head looked too long and conical, the ears too small, the almost tubular tail too straight and stiff." It's written mastery like that that makes The Ghost With Trembling Wings as beautifully specific as it is evocatively universal, giving vivid breadth to the human need to penetrate the outside world in whatever form rouses our deepest passions.
excellent anthology.......2005-08-08
of supposedly lost and newly rediscovered species. Weidensaul concentrates on the few selected species which have been catalogued as extinct, yet which anecdotal evidence tells us may still be out there. This is a wonderful book, full of travelogues and hope by the author in search of supposed mystery creatures, both likely and unlikely. He maintains a skeptical yet optimistic mind in his own searches and touches upon species as varied as the "extinct" Sempler's Warbler and the Loch Ness "monster". It is carefully and objectively written without a hint of sensationalism, but maintains an open discourse related to the species' possible existence. One of the top three "cryptozoology" guides; the other favorite of mine is Matthew Bille's book on a similar subject. Toss the rest as National Enquirer material, including the venerable Heuvelmans' tome.
Superb Read!.......2005-05-07
A superb book. Fascinating, extermely well written and difficult to put down. Weidensaul renders his vast curiosity, observation, and love of nature contagious.
