A Visual Treat.......1998-09-26

This book deals with architechtural details/ornament in New York City. There are 3 pages of useful definitons - a couple paragraphs on each subject - for instance, an anchor or a terminus, telling what it is, it's use, and what it's typically made of - all in easy to understand language. There are also drawings of building faces showing where the defined items are located. Then pages and pages of very nice color photos - no more words - just great pix. Alot of the photos are 2" X 2", nine per page. There is a good mixture of close-up and wide view shots, and the photos are in logical groupings (like the capitals are together on several pages, and the anchors are together on several pages). I liked it enough that I bought the book - and I rarely buy books, just use the library.

this is a great book for begginers and experts alike. it has tips on how to draw faces, bodies,and hands(wich are hard for me) but it got me drawing like a pro some of my friends even want to buy my drawings. i highly recommend this book

Deceptive Title, Poorly Proofread, Major Historical Blunders.......2004-10-19

Having great deal of respect for the Readers and Writers series in general, I was truly disappointed by Joe Lee's _History of Clowns for Beginners_. First of all, be forewarned: Lee's subject is not so much circus clowns per se (they get about two pages), but the various incarnations of the trickster archetype in general, from the Paleolithic era through the present.
Besides the utterly groundless statements made about the disposition and mentality of preliterate civilizations, there are numerous major historical errors of an elementary nature. For example, Lee claims that no text of a Greek satyr play has survived--if, in fact, any "had ever even existed." What on Earth is he talking about? Evidently Lee isn't familiar with Euripides' _Cyclops_ or the fragments we have of dozens of other satyr plays. Another of Lee's bizarre statements is that Erasmus translated the New Testament "into Latin and Greek." Apparently Lee is unaware that the original language of the New Testament is, in fact, Greek.
Neither of the silly errors should have escaped the notice of a decent editor. Nor should the countless grammatical and punctuation errors which riddle the text, sometimes rendering it unintelligible.
After spotting various errors on subjects in which I am well versed, I began wondering how much I could trust Lee's representation of periods and concepts relatively unfamilar to me. And it's hard for a reader in that kind of skeptical posture to be impressed or intrigued by anything at all.
In short, this book was a disappointment--it's such a shame, since it's such a good idea for a book in the first place. I can only hope that Writers and Readers releases a new edition of _Clowns for Beginners_ after subjecting it to a major overhaul.
To Lee's credit, some of his wordplay is funny and his art is excellent.

A very well written book........2000-06-12

I thought the book was exceptionally written despite the fact that it lost it's meaning many times throught the important sections.

This book argues that a professional Elizabethan theatre company always contained one actor known as ‘the clown’. Its focus is Will Kemp, clown to the Chamberlain’s Men from 1594 to 1599 and famed for his solo dance from London to Norwich in 1600. David Wiles combines textual, theatrical and biographical lines of research in order to map out Kemp’s career. He shows how Shakespeare and other dramatists made use of Kemp’s talents and wrote specific roles as vehicles for him. He discerns a perpetual and productive tension between the ambitions of a progressive writer and the aspirations of a traditional actor whose art was rooted in improvisation. The book also describes the clown tradition in general, dealing with Kemp’s inheritance from medieval theatre, with the work of Richard Tarlton, the great comic actor of the 1570s and 1580s, and with Kemp’s successor, Robert Armin, who created the ‘fool’ parts in Shakespeare.

Perhaps this book shows that animal instinct we used to survive in the age of dinosaurs are just as valuable today in our 21st century high tech jungle--albeit a slightly different jungle. Corporations and individuals still face the same primeval battles of supremacy--of predators and prey--in the workplace today. It's a Jungle Out There!! will be indispensable to their survival and prosperity.

The things that he has talked about are mostly common sense. Of course, if you don't observe, you won't know. And some of the samples are really just made up stories. And some of stories are not his observations; he must have spent quite some time watching those animal programs on TV.

Each page has one sample, and very short. This is the right book for toilet reading. It is just an entertaining book when you are bored. You can't really learn how to run a business just by reading this simple book.

This book also has some grammar mistakes.

Another great book in a great series, Tufted Titmouse deals with a species that is rare in my area and which I have only observed once quite by accident many years ago. Very informative, and is the case with all books in the series, filled with numerous excellent colour photopgraphs. I learned much from this book, and hope there will be many more in this series.

A good, educational guide.......2004-01-21

I find this guide, Tufted Titmouse, to be pleasing and informative. Ornithologist Thomas C. Grubb, Jr., wrote it. It consists of 88 pages and was published in 1998. The color photos are nice. There is much about this guide that is worthy of attention: it discusses not only the natural history of the tufted titmouse but also that of the black-crested titmouse. When this guide was published in 1998, both of these birds were considered to be two races of the same species. In 2002, the American Ornithologists' Union separated them into two species. There are five chapters. Examples of topics discussed are behavior and communication and the nonbreeding and breeding seasons. I have learned some things about the tufted titmouse that I was not aware of beforehand--these especially being the bird using its crest as a means of communication and its food-caching behavior. I have found through personal experience that the tufted titmouse is an interesting, attractive bird that will use birdfeeders, birdbaths, and birdhouses. This guide is not disappointing, and I recommend it.

From the author: Until now, there have been no reports of extrapair parentage in Tufted Titmice (Baeolophus bicolor). During 1995-1998, we used multilocus minisatellite DNA fingerprinting to estimate paternity and degree of relatedness in eight central Ohio broods of this socially monogamous species. Our results suggest a rather low rate of extrapair fertilization in the study population; three of 34 nestlings could not be attributed to the attending male. Of the three extrapair offspring, two represented the entire brood in a nest attended by their mother and a nonparental male that appeared to be a close relative of the mother.
