Misleading title........2007-08-12

What appears to have been written and endorsed by veteran photographers, this book is little more than old schoolers showing their age. Cheesy Photoshop filters and horrific composites that would never see the light of day in a commercial application, such as advertising or magazine. The Author shows his lack of experience by the over use of noise-filled duotones of each contributor's personal photograph. The cover is the best example of retouching in the whole book. Tim Kelly and Jim DiVitale do show they are among the few with real talent, but they do so in their photography -- not in Photoshop. Since this book lead me to believe that it was about digital photography, perhaps that's why I appreciated their sections. The others need to walk away from the computer until they can tastefully use it. Bad examples.

I will end with this, there are no real illustrations of technique in this book. It's mostly what I would catergorize as a series of mini-portfolios -- many not very good. I'm glad I bought this used so that I can toss it without hesitation.

Definitive referenced work on experiential learning.......2006-10-21

Not everyone is interested in a referenced text. This is not your sit down and breeze through popular book on a topic. However, if you are interested in understanding the foundation of the field of learning through experience, you absolutely must read, no study, this reference. For those of us who are practitioners, understanding theory is critical and this reference provides the foundation for much of the current work in the learning field. I highly recommend. This book will not go out of date as experiential strategies are not a fade and will not go out of style.

An indispensible and seminal text!!.......2001-08-26

Kolb's "Experiential Learning" is a masterpiece. In it, he deftly synthesizes the strands of learning theory and psychological research that inform his 4 stage learning cycle. All committed "experiential educators" should consult this book in order more deeply to understand the deep and rich conceptual foundation(s) of our potent pedagogical practice. In his "Foreword" to the volume, Leadership guru Warren Bennis positively hyperventilates in applauding Kolb's achievement in this work. And for good reason! From thence comes Kolb's elegant & powerful "Learning Styles Inventory" (or LSI), among other things. Even if you're a cynic or skeptic re: the merit of experiential education, you would do well to peruse this tour-de-force in order better to appreciate what you may be missing.

When one encounters the word " dialectic" while reading academic texts it should be as a clear signal as a fire to forest ranger that trouble is on the horizon. This statement may be a bit of an exaggeration but it would definitely be accurate to say that Kolb's Experiential Learning is no easy read. Of course, this does not diminish the value of the book, in spite of difficult passages. Ironically, this is the essence of the concept of "dialectic". Liberal doses of psychology are ladled throughout the book as the masters (Piaget, Jung, et. al) are consistently consulted to back up theory. Although not professing to have knowledge about psychology, it is clear that their work is essential to establish the interrelationship between cognition and experiential learning. Theory of learning and the opposing learning styles of apprehension and comprehension are explored. This book is clearly the cure for a stubborn case of insomnia. I can't say that the book is without merit, however, because it held some great information that will be useful now and in future applications when I have the chance to practice my current endeavors. Some passages even caused a sense of anticipation for the succeeding ones because there was a considerable amount of interesting information that I had not yet pondered. I would compare this book to putting molasses on pancakes on a winter day. It is thick and doesn't go down easily but great once you warm up to it

I have read this book and as a coach and business person, it shares a LOT of practical ideas on planning, marketing and growing your client base and business.
From planning the business plan, to writing it;
from identifying your target clients to marketing to them;
from setting up billing to how to set up accepting credit cards--it's all there!
It can be a tool to work through step by step or a reference. Regardless of how you use it, it is valuable to have on my "active" boookshelf!

A Great Disappointment.......2001-03-11

Having read and studied the author's book carefully, the most accurate way I know how to describe it is simply as "factually challenged history." That there are many omitted facts from Nesbitt's book one wonders why the attempt was made in the first place. If someone is looking for a well reasoned treatise on the Lee-Stuart issues at play in the Gettysburg campaign, they need look elsewhere.

Who's to blame? Not Stuart.......2001-01-29

It's about time someone has taken the initiative to defend Stuart's rightful actions during the Gettysburg Campaign. Nesbitt's book explains fully what I have known all along. Lee had cavalry with him and failed to use them. That is Lee's fault. End of story. These people that feel the need to keep the blame from Lee and continually find "scapegoats" need to get over it. This was an excellent book that I will recommend to anyone who wants the real truth of the battle of Gettysburg.

A Very Poor Defense of an Indefensible Action.......1999-09-02

Nebitt's SABER AND SCAPEGOAT redefines the depths to which an author bent on historical advocacy is willing to stoop. Nesbitt's attempt to explain why "Jeb" Stuart should not be blamed for any part of the Confederate failure in the 1863 Pennsylvania campaign could not pass History 101, let alone be considered as serious military prose. The author's incredibly narrow criteria that employs only selective use of some portions of certain documents, while ignoring vital evidence such as the historical context in which ALL of the orders were written, Lee's important restraining orders, Stuart's own actions at Haymarket, Dover and elsewhere throughout the ill-fated eight day "raid" that show he was following an agenda all his own, and much much more, reduce this work to a poorly organized, intellectually shabby exercise. With such a spotty and incomplete use of all the available evidence, Nesbitt's work should be viewed with greatest amount of caution and skepticism possible.

The facts are there - most only care to repeat what was said of Stuart. Why would such an exemplary soldier screw up suddenly ? He didn't screw up but followed orders. The facts are there if anyone wants to check them LIKE NESBITT DID !

Of limited value to scholars, it may mislead general readers.......1997-01-20

Author Nesbitt appears to have taken up the cause so energetically fought by Stuart friend and appologist, Col. John Mosby in the last decades of the partisan's life. Like Mosby's defense (Stuart's Cavalry in the Gettysburg Campaign), this study suffers from poor organization which leads to a sense of confusion. Perhaps the author felt he had such a plethera of points of contention that he had difficulty in maintaining his direction. The author's main points center on the ambiguity of the evidence supporting the charges brought against Stuart by men such as Lee's aids, Marshal, Long, and Taylor. He correctly points out the inconsistencies of some points and challenges the logic of others. The bulk of his defense is based on supposition, a point he makes in regard to the charges of Stuart's failure to follow orders, but forgets when shifting the blame to others. The one redeeming value of this study, as alluded to above, is that the attacks on Stuart's conduct during his ride to Gettysburg are difficult to defend and are generally brought by persons with an agenda of their own. The great weakness, also alluded to above, is that the defense of Stuart is also based on similarly difficult to defend arguments by men, read Mosby, that likewise had an agenda. Given Lee's loosely constructed orders and Stuart's penchant for glory hunting, especially after the generally defensive role played by the cavalry through the battles in the Aldie-Middleburg-Upperville area, it is impossible to conclusively determine where the bulk of the guilt lies in the mismanagement of the Confederate cavalry at Gettysburg. As the author has demonstrated, as it has been before, the lack of clarity of evidence on both sides of the debate makes it possible to read into the argument whatever one likes. For bringing the issue to the forefront once again, the author should be commended. Likewise, he should be applauded for taking a stand on one of the greates controversies to come out of the American Civil War-a move that ensures that one side or the other will not concur with his conclusions.

This volume has a very good idea behind it. It attempts to provide in one volume a basic understanding of world- affairs, key concepts and terms. It provides basic information on many different concepts .Its one great shortcoming is that it does not really provide knowledge in depth. The more the person knows about the subject the less likely they are to be satisfied by the entry.

This has to be the best field guide I've ever used. It's well organized and simple enough for a beginning birder. It's also crammed full of information for the more serious ornithologist. The photos are spectacular!

It has clear, concise pictures of the birds of my region with a written synopsis of each bird's habitat. I recommend this book to any avid bird lover! It is an awesome book!

This book provides excellent descriptions of the birds' physical appearances, lots of photographs, and maps of their winter and summer range. It is small enough that you could take it out birding, and has a durable cover. You will not be disappointed!

National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds: Eastern Region - Revised Edition.......2007-09-09

My favorite bird watching book because all the photos are organized by color of bird and variety of birds. The plentiful information is carefully correlated but is not on the page with the photos. I prefer this when I am searching for the bird in my view. Handy is size and shape for quick browsing.

I also have the rocks and minerals guide and the guide for N.American trees.
