On Gendering Texts is a wonderful book in a field that demonstrates its maturity by this publication. It discusses the important and traditional issue of authorship. Whereas the idea of a unique and divinely inspired biblical author has long been abandoned, the issue of authorship itself has not. The possibility that women might have contributed to the production of the Bible has not been taken seriously and yet the idea that everything is male unless otherwise proven is hardly acceptable. What can one do? The two authors of this book shrewdly displace the question. Rather than worrying about unprovable historical authors, they consider gender-positions; authority; gendered textuality and attributions of gender within the text; voice; world-view and ideological content. Each of these issues is important, and the gesture of raising them in connection with that of authorship alone makes this book worthwhile. There were places in this book where I laughed out loud, usually at the real-life examples of "culture clashes." The letters also made me think about how my own behavior at work could be misunderstood by foreigners. I learned a lot!

I just started working in a large multi-national and have found this book invaluable in its advice about how to deal with people from other cultures. I particularly liked the Q&A format of much of the book when people wrote to Gwyneth Olofsson with questions about how to deal with tricky cross-cultural situations - the sort that can lead to "culture clash" if you're not careful. A big plus is that it's funny too!

Massage and Fun.......2001-07-17

I have known Robert for 15 years. He has Rolfed (type of massage) my husband, our twin girls 8 years old (since they were 4 weeks old and of course me.

Reading this book has reinforced a lot of what I have learned from Robert. But more importantly I learned a lot more of what I didn't know. I have found this book easy to read. I really liked the step by step instructions. My girls really like trying different kinds of oils. The drawings are helpful for those of us who don't know all the parts of our anatomy, like me.

My children and I had a blast with this book.

I have twin girl's 8 years old. They couldn't wait until I learned another part of their bodies to massage. They would say me first! No me first!

The girls are both in gymnastics, competing this year at Level 6. I give them their message before each competition. It calms them down and focuses them on what they need to do. The one says "look out world I am ready now!" and leaps off the bed!

They give me messages. A few times for full 35 minutes. I can't get that from my husband; and from talking to others they say the same thing "my spouse will only message me for 5 minutes, if I'm lucky." Massaging my girls is so fulfilling. The loving care I can give them is priceless. This book really makes a difference.

good for the massage instructions.......2001-06-11

Mostly a good tool for actually giving directions on how to perform massage on babies and children although the written instructions are so long that following along with them while performing the massage may be difficult.

There is not much background information here about the benefits of massage. There are no references to studies, etc. that show that massage is better. (Other books I've seen have pages of references.) Infant and child bonding is not explored or discussed nearly as much as I would have liked to have seen. There is only one half of a page of information about massaging premature babies and no illustrations for these instructions. There are two pages discussing special needs children which is very vague, not really discussing the various different special needs issues.

Every body part is matched to a new-agey reference such as the sides of the body linking to "the many sides of life" and the inner legs with "vitality".

I was surprised there was no reference for special techniques to use on the colicky or fussy baby: the main reason that parents I know are first drawn to infant massage. This book does give the different instructions for baby and then the older child.

Line drawings, mostly of the body part, are on one side with very long written instructions next to it. I would prefer to show the whole baby as it is a reminder that the baby is a whole person. (Reminds me of Western medical doctors who view their patients as just body parts or diseases, unconnected to a real whole person.) The layout of illustration next to directions is nice but the instructions are so long that it would not be easy to follow if trying to read while actually doing the massage technique.

A slim volume. If you just want directions with illustrations then you would like this book. I think there are better books on the market that discuss massage more in detail, do address colic, fussiness, and have more on premature infants and special needs babies and children.

Of note for those interested the cover shows three Caucasian children, the back has one dark skinned child (not African-American) and one Asian child. All illustrations inside appear to be Caucasian.

Down-to-earth View of a Legendary Pilot.......2003-06-19

I highly recommend this book, which was written by Baroness Kunigunde von Richthofen, the mother of Manfred von Richthofen, better known as the Red Baron. What other legendary/mythical figure has a mother who has written a book about him? The Baroness also includes Manfred's siblings-Lothar, his younger and very competitive brother (who was also a flying ace--that's why the book is called "Mother of Eagles"), his older sister Ilse, who tended the wounded as a Red Cross nurse, and his kid brother Bolko, who was at a military school during the war, itching at the chance to be like his big brother. The Baroness brings Manfred down to earth, and more than once she mentions things that she probably thinks are endearing but that would probably make Manfred blush. That's just the way mothers are.

The translator, Sue Fischer, has done a tremendous amount of in-depth research and has added new facts, photographs, and information. She has studied the Richthofen family for many years and, unlike many writers of WWI aviation literature, is familiar with the social and cultural context of the war.

I think it would be very interesting to read this book in conjunction with Baron von Richthofen's autobiography; in his book you get a masculine view of the war; in the Baroness' book you get a very rare feminine view of the war. If you're looking for exciting accounts of aerial combat, this book is not for you, but if you would like a look into the personal side of the Ace of Aces, you will thoroughly enjoy the war diary of the "Mother of Eagles."

This is a very thorough book, although Rupley's manual of avian practice is a more practical and up to date reference for the clinician. Altman's book is a little vague in the pathology and sometimes too general for a book that should be an all-encompassing reference.

This book is outstanding for bird owners who desire to know more about their pets. This book is quite technical in nature, and needs a person who knows a little about anatomy and physiology in order to get the most out of this book. For me, the investment of the high price was worth it.

The "Self-Assessment Color Review" collection is very nice and I can recommend the avian one. In my opinion, this book is not intended to give you a profound and detailed picture of the diseases but it more or less tries to confront you with real-life situations. Excellent for students or clinicians who want to deepen or broaden their interest.
