5 out of 5 stars A gorgeous, informative, and truely inspiring book!!!.......1999-01-16

Ms Moran delights us with her impressionistic work. Her subject is vases of large, informal bouquets of flowers. After an introduction depicting the materials and tools she prefers, she goes trough detailed demonstrations showing and explaining the various stages of a painting . The book is full of pertinent advice on composition and execution .She devotes a section on drawing, and how to measure and be accurate. She addresses the topic of lost and found edges. She talks about about tonal values and brushwork. There is an interesting page of catchphrases she uses when teaching . I feel this book would be very helpful to any aspiring artist because of the specific advice and guidelines given.I also believe an accomplished artist would enjoy the beauty of Ms Moran painting and would find interest in some of the unconventional advice. This is my most favorite book on the subject of painting flowers in oil!

    Book Description

This witty and fascinating study reminds us that there was animation before Disney: about thirty years of creativity and experimentation flourishing in such extraordinary work as Girdie the Dinosaur and Felix the Cat. Before Mickey, the first and only in-depth history of animation from 1898-1928, includes accounts of mechanical ingenuity, marketing and art. Crafton is equally adept at explaining techniques of sketching and camera work, evoking characteristic styles of such pioneering animators as Winsor McCay and Ladislas Starevitch, placing work in its social and economic context, and unraveling the aesthetic impact of specific cartoons.

"Before Mickey's scholarship is quite lively and its descriptions are evocative and often funny. The history of animation coexisted with that of live-action film but has never been given as much attention."—Tim Hunter, New York Times

5 out of 5 stars Chronicle of a much forgotten time........2002-11-19

There was once a time when the utterance "Mickey Mouse" had no meaning and conjured up no images of vast tracts of decadent land saturated with sugary amusement. The word "Felix", however, would probably send a jolt through most living in this lost time. Just how popular Felix was is evident in a 1926 photograph of Ligget's Drug Store in Grand Central Station that Crafton included in "Before Mickey." The window is nearly filled to the brim with Felix paraphenalia, much like we've seen recently with the Powerpuff Girls, Spongebob Squarepants and Harry Potter. Felix was once just as ubiquitous and just as unavoidable.

The events that led up to this incredible success are laid out in "Before Mickey." The saga of animation is an interesting and much neglected part of cinema history. The book covers something that is almost never discussed: animation's origins in stop-motion. Everyone should read Crafton's account of "The Haunted Hotel" - a stop-motion film where objects "float" through the air and objects move on their own. It terrified audiences and gave impendance to animation with its success. From this it was almost a natural progression to drawings that moved and funny characters in funny situations.

Silent animation had its own life and own method of communicating. Everything was in the pictures, and early animation artists made the most of this. It remains, and will probably sadly remain, a very underappreciated art form. We're just too drunk with sound these days.

Luckily, you can read this book and get a taste of what those days must have been like, the stories of the pioneers that made it all possible (those in America, at least) and how far we've come in some respects and what we've lost in others.

Anyone interested in the early history of animation should read this(after all, there isn't much else out there right now). Also, if you can, buy the tape (is it available on DVD now?) that accompanies the book. It's filled with great animation but sadly missing "The Haunted Hotel." It does, however, include a GREAT Felix the Cat cartoon.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on the First 30 Years of Animation.......2001-01-14

In histories of animation there is usually a very small amount of time devoted to animation that was released before "Steamboat Willie". This book fills this hole quite nicely. The book goes into exhaustive detail on James Stuart Blackton, Winsor McCay, Emile Cohl, Otto Messmer, the Bray Studio, and animation shops that emerged from the Bray Studio. There is one chapter devoted to commercial animation in Europe from this time period. But if you're looking for a more in depth study of early European animators like Ladislas Starewicz and Lotte Reiniger, you might want to check some place else (I'm not sure where). Though one entire chapter IS devoted to Emile Cohl, this mostly deals with American animation. Those looking for information about animation outside of Western society are looking in the wrong place. As its title suggests, this book is basically a history of events leading up to Mickey Mouse.

            Book Description

This book is a collection of papers inspired by the work of Mary Elmendorf, a pioneer in applied anthropology and community development. Dr. Elmendorf spent much of her career studying the roles of women in Maya communities, as well as problems of health, community development, human rights and the environment. Unlike the classic "festschrift" that frequently is little more than a random assembling of papers united only by their being somehow related to the work of the honoree, this collection is intended as a unified work that will provide a detailed view of recent work on cultural ecology, biodiversity conservation, and development among the diverse communities inhabiting the Yucatan Peninsula. Thanks in large measure to Mary Elmendorf's work, this region has been an area of particularly creative and exciting projects. The editors of this volume are eager to share findings from these projects with a wider audience. Written in a sophisticated, but accessible manner, this book will be of ready interest to cultural and biological anthropologists, development planners, international agencies and NGOs as well as any readers concerned about the problems of integrating development, biodiversity, and traditional lifeways in rapidly changing rural and small town situations.

                Book Description

Based on roundtable discussions by a variety of scholars over a two-year period, these essays explore the complex and often contradictory matrix of sentiments, feelings, and beliefs that frame America's contemporary social doctrine of wealth. The seven Boston College faculty members whose writings comprise this volume are professors of classics, economics, ethics, history, literature, scripture, and sociology. Each scholar reviews a a range of writings and narratives that enunciate definite theses about the genesis and prospects as well as the uses and abuses of wealth. Today, as the discussion of wealth creation and distribution become framed less frequently under the rubrics of capitalism and socialism, it is propitious to examine other pieces of the debate that come to us from our Western classical, biblical, literary, and ethical traditions. The talk for and against wealth, so well articulated by Adam Smith and Karl Marx, is only one axis on which this important Western motif turns. Schervish and his contributors enable us to consult several other texts that can guide our repositioning on the controversies surrounding the moral status of wealth and the wealthy.

                      Book Description

Adapting a centuries-old psychological system of personality profiling, The Enneagram Advantage gives invaluable insight into your own business persona as well as those of your colleagues, bosses, clients, and corporate cultures. Best-selling author Helen Palmer has written the ultimate guide to using this remarkable system at the office and in business relationships.

The Enneagram is a powerful tool that is reshaping the face of business in the 1990s. With straightforward techniques that are easy to understand and simple to apply, The Enneagram Advantage helps you break free of rigid perceptions about yourself, your business environment, and the way you think and act in the office. Palmer teaches you how to identify yourself as one of the nine personalities--the Perfectionist, the Giver, the Performer, the Romantic, the Observer, the Loyal Skeptic, the Epicure, the Boss, or the Mediator. She then pinpoints the strengths and weaknesses of the types: how they interact with others; how they think and perform in their jobs; what motivates them; and how they communicate. The Enneagram Advantage provides a powerful and proven method for self-discovery and gives you the tools you need to improve and enhance all of your professional associations and activities.

4 out of 5 stars Reasonable Application of the Enneagram in Work Settings.......2005-12-03

In this book, enneagram expert and teacher Helen Palmer teams up with business writer Paul Brown to explore the "Business and Work" aspects of the nine enneagram types. Specifically, Palmer sets out to cover people's "Business Persona" and how the types interact in work settings. Whereas I would call this a "worthwhile effort," the reknown of the co-authors led me to expect more from this book. Although I mostly bought the book on account of my interest in the enneagram, I found the business angle to be somewhat weak. That said-- and in defense of Palmer-- the enneagram IS a very complex system, so an attempt to incorporate its teachings into a 280-page business "manual" for laymen is not only ambitious, but would almost inevitably have to include an extensive psychological background. Which this book does, somewhat at the expense of much practical "nuts and bolts" coverage of business applications.

The book has two main sections. In the first section, Palmer offers a brief background on the enneagram, followed by a self-test "quiz" (a series of paragraphs) to help readers determine their type. She explains (briefly) how the system "works," and how knowing the enneagram can help people work more smoothly with each other in a business setting.

The second section-- entitled "The Nine Types At Work"-- consists of nine chapters, each offering a "descriptive snapshot" of an enneagram type. Each type chapter starts with a checklist to help with self-identification, then covers typical motivations and behaviors of that type in work settings. There's also a brief section on how *others* perceive that type. The remainder of each chapter covers self- and outer-motivation, time management, negotiation strengths and weaknesses, training techniques, and concludes with a short "vignette" to show that type might work through a particular business situation.

Overall, the book is fairly logically and simply laid out, with each type chapter covering the same basic concepts in fairly easy-to-read language.

Final thoughts: Recommended (7.5 out of 10 possible bookmarks) with a couple of cautions. It's interesting material for students of the enneagram, although it breaks little new ground from Palmer's previous "The Enneagram in Love & Work." As a stand-alone "Business Book" to provide someone NOT familiar with the enneagram insight into the personality dynamics of a workplace, you have to be prepared to read a LOT of enneagram/psychology content before you can get significant benefit from the somewhat limited business/work content. Might be best suited to HR managers with a solid background in psychology.

For an alternative (and perhaps somewhat clearer and more useful) angle on this topic, I'd like to also suggest "The 9 Ways of Working: How to Use the Enneagram to Discover Your Natural Strengths and Work More Effectively" by Michael J. Goldberg.

5 out of 5 stars Palmer is the best!.......1999-07-27

Helen gives practical advice on using the Enneagram typing system to help put people in a position to suceed. The workplace is made up of diverse personality types. Palmer provides the guidelines to help us with daily interactions with differing types. By showing strengths and weaknesses for each type she helps to insure that people can be utilized in jobs that will bring out their best.

4 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Enneagrams..........1999-05-03

This was my first look at enneagrams. It makes you realize how pathetic identifying someone as simply a 'Type A' or 'Type B' personality is. It helped me understand why my wife, whom had been categorized as a 'A' type would act differently in different situations, while I, a 'B' type would do the same. Once you find your Enneagram, you will be amazed at how so many things will make sense.

2 out of 5 stars more about psychology than about business.......1999-03-20

Interesting read but she spends ultimately more airtime on psychology than business applications of this technique.

I'm incredibly impressed with the quality of this book and this author. Picture something between John Jakes and Diana Gabaldon, and you have Daughter of Liberty - a sweeping story of the beginning of the American Revolution AND the satisfying growth of a relationship that is fraught with impossibilities...and danger.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and well written!.......2006-06-06

For someone like me who is not a fan of historic fiction and who honestly believed I had already read more than enough accounts of our country's revolutionary period, I was pleasantly surprised to discover The American Patriot Series by J. M. Hochstetler. The first book in this excellent series, Daughter of Liberty, was also the first book I had read by this particular author, but I knew right away it would not be the last. Within moments of turning to the opening page, I was captivated by this story of the brave and daring Oriole, a spy for the American Revolutionaries with a secret that could change the course of a nation, and Patriot, another spy with a most amazing secret of his own.

Hochstetler not only weaves a suspenseful tale of courage, intrigue, and romance, but also decorates the pages of this exquisite novel with some of the best writing I've come across in years. This book was well worth the read, and served to push me on to the second book in the series.

                            5 out of 5 stars History Alive!.......2006-05-15

Rushing ahead to act without thought to God's will has consequences. Most often, negative, painful, and life-scarring. Yet we've all done it.

This is what connects a reader's heart to Elizabeth Howard, the main character in Daughter of Liberty, the first in The American Patriot Series, masterfully written by J. M. Hochstetler.

Elizabeth portrays the essence of innocent and faithful daughter to an established Boston family stalwartly supporting the Whig party. All the while, she is passionate for the patriot cause and dons the role of Oriole-elusive rebel spy.

Life takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of Captain Jonathan Carleton. He's magnetic, handsome, and a Redcoat. Elizabeth's traitorous heart is completely captured... a complication she hadn't counted on, especially when the first shots ring out in Lexington and Concord.

More than just her heart is at stake during the first skirmish of the Revolutionary War. The lives of many depend on Elizabeth. But has she truly learned to wait on God's will, or rush ahead in her own power to save the day?

                            J. M. Hochstetler's story delivers to the reader not only a page turner, but a wealth of education about the beginnings of the War for Independence.

4 out of 5 stars Great book from first-time author.......2006-01-17

"The crack of the pistol's report came from directly behind the courier. Sizzling past so close to his ear he could feel the heat of it."

With these words, and the impact of a rebel fieldpiece, J. M. Hochstetler's Daughter of Liberty bursts onto the historical fiction scene.

Twenty-year-old Bostonian Elizabeth Howard sympathizes with the patriots' struggle for freedom from English oppression. Her convictions set her at odds with her parents' pro-British sympathies, and force her to live a life of lies and deception. By day she is a debutante, by night she is a spy.

Ruggedly handsome Jonathan Carleton was born in England, but is now a wealthy Virginian landowner. He's committed to serving his country, but to which does he owe his allegiance? As a member of the British regulars he stands for everything Elizabeth despises.

From the moment these two meet, their attraction is fiery and dangerous, and neither Jonathan nor Elizabeth suspects the other's true allegiance. Are they destined to remain enemies forever?

Add to this conflict a villain out to get both the hero and heroine, and a final plot twist that will delight fans of the Jane Seymore version of The Scarlet Pimpernel, and you've got a truly interesting read.

The Revolutionary War makes a great setting for the realistic plot and action Hochstetler incorporates. Fans of American history will appreciate this novel as a painless way to learn more about the lives of such famous historical figures as General Thomas Gage, General John Pitcairn, Paul Revere, and Dr. Joseph Warren.

Although I am a fan of historical fiction, I was a little overwhelmed with the depth of history included in this book. The emotion of "disgust" was also used too frequently in the prose for my taste. However, the plot, the lively dialogue, and the character interaction-especially the romantic development-are fabulous, so don't let the historical details stop you.

Forgotten in the dust of history are the women who fought, who financed and who fanned the flames of war and independence but were forgotten in the male-dominated history books. Reading level is about fourth grade, great graphics, text is engaging and stories are short. Although the text is somewhat "bloodless" this title is bound to get some readers excited about finding out more about these ladies.

They chose the Miles Brewton House at 27 King Street. This was the home of Rebecca Brewton Motte, sister of the home's builder. The British forced Rebecca to remain in the home as serve as their hostess. This is the story of Rebecca Brewton Motte and her courageous sacrifice that helped America win its independence from England.

The book seems fine, however the title on the spine is incorrect. It reads "Women Partiots of the American Revolution". This is not suitable for a library to display. I am filing a complaint regarding the error and will gladly scan the product to prove it.

                                        Book Description

Political cartoons are a valuable, though often neglected, source of historical information and understanding. In b /b b i Great Nations Still Enchained /i /b , Roy Douglas uses these cartoons as a lens through which to examine the examine the political and social arenas of Europe, and the events which changes the landscape. br br Douglas includes cartoons from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Russia, the major powers of the day. These drawings illustrate how those people living in the midst of the events discussed perceived and interpreted them, acting as a barometer of public opinion, and reflecting their assumptions and ideas. As the cartoons are taken from various countries, they display how different, and often conflicting national attitudes developed. br br The period examined here, between 1878 and 1914, holds a particular significance in European history: 1878 marked the Congress of Berlin, which removed (or postponed) the very real risk of war between some of the `Great Powers', and was the last effective assertion of the Concert of Europe. After this time, the Powers drifted increasingly into smaller, limited alliances, which, among other factors, played a large part in the genesis of the First World War. br br Douglas has brought his gift for concise, clear explanation to this period, as has in his previous books b /b b i Between the Wars 1919-1935 /i /b and b /b b i The World /i /b b /b b i War: 1939-1945 /i /b . His work has brought currency and vitality to events which can often be lost in actual accounts. It should be of interest to any reader in European history and political science.

This book belongs next to Cade and Burnham's Return of the Peregrine in any library intent on chronicling what is probably the greatest conservation story of the 20th century.

                                        The Auk

"This is a wide-ranging and readable treatment of the peregrine's decline and rebound in North America from crash to near-recovery....In fact, Enderson was one of the main players, and this goes a long way toward giving the book credibility."

—Lloyd F. Kiff, Science Director, the Peregrine Fund

A superb success as a bird, combining great speed, aeronautical grace, and fearlessness...inhabitant of wild places, inaccessible cliffs, and skyscrapers...worldwide dweller, trans-equatorial migrant, and docile captive—the peregrine falcon stands alone among all others of its kind. Perhaps this is why so many varied people rushed to its aid when it faced decimation by pesticide poisoning.

In this personal and highly entertaining memoir, Jim Enderson tells stories of a lifetime spent studying, training, breeding, and simply enjoying peregrine falcons. He recalls how his boyhood interest in raptors grew into an ornithological career in which he became one of the leading experts who helped identity DDT as the cause of the peregrine falcon's sudden and massive decline across the United States. His stories reveal both the dedication that he and fellow researchers brought to the task of studying and restoring the peregrine and the hair-raising adventures that sometimes befell them along the way. Enderson also seamlessly weaves in the biology and natural history of the peregrine, as well as anecdotes about its traditional and widespread use in falconry as an aggressive yet tractable hunter, to offer a broad portrait of this splendid and intriguing falcon.

If you didn't want to take the time to read the review by Stan Moore, take my word for it...
This book is a truly wonderful look at the plight of the peregrine as a species. Jim Enderson is without a doubt one of the top peregrine biologists in the world, and has created a memoir that is an absolute gem. Buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars The best book on peregrine falcons ever........2005-03-12

There have been many books on peregrine falcons over the years, including some very good ones. I have read most of them. Jim Enderson's new book is probably the best book on peregrines I have ever seen, especially if one includes the peregrine/human interface. Jim Enderson not only knows peregrine falcons intimately, but he is intimately acquainted with most or all of the major peregrine falcon biologists in the world, not to mention falconers who train and fly both wild caught and captive bred peregrines. Many of Enderson's generation of peregrine biologists were and are falconers, and the unique and substantive insights of these people, including Enderson, are what make this book so special.

This book includes a lot of low-key humor by the author, which perhaps one would expect of a former Iowa farm boy. Adventures to the four corners of the world in places from Scotland to Zimbabwe to Greenland are among the highlights of the book. Tales of perilous climbs by rope to visit cliffside peregrine nests place the reader on edge. There is even a tiny amount of sexual innuendo among a few of the stories to titillate those who are not merely satisfied with reading about duck hawks.

Enderson also is brutally honest in revealing some of his opinions and foibles. He talks of "robbing" peregrine nests, with the end justifying the means. The reader is left to wonder if Enderson took some peregrine young illegally (without legal authorization by appropriate government permits) or was he robbing the nests only from the perspective of the parents.
Some of the science/policy/conservation views expressed by Enderson are subject to question, such as his apparent view that "floaters" are not a major part of robust, healthy populations, or that subspecific status is not important in recovery/management efforts. History has shown that peregrine subspecies' status was used in listing the birds at the beginning of the DDT era, but Enderson appears to be saying that subspecies considerations are useful in determining status, but not in management.

Any person who loves peregrine falcons or who knows some of the history of peregrine falcon research and recovery will love this book. It is a hard book to put down once you start reading it!
Many of us would die to have the chance at a life like Enderson chronicles in this book. This book is a memoir that gives us a peek into a fabulous, productive, exciting human life in close interaction with a truly charasmatic wildlife species. One comes away with a feeling of: "Damn. I wish I could have been there, done that."
