The Creative Economy: How People Make Money from Ideas

Book Description
This book explores the organization of creative industries, including the visual and performing arts, movies, theater, sound recordings, and book publishing. In each, artistic inputs are combined with other, "humdrum" inputs. But the deals that bring these inputs together are inherently problematic: artists have strong views; the muse whispers erratically; and consumer approval remains highly uncertain until all costs have been incurred.
To assemble, distribute, and store creative products, business firms are organized, some employing creative personnel on long-term contracts, others dealing with them as outside contractors; agents emerge as intermediaries, negotiating contracts and matching creative talents with employers. Firms in creative industries are either small-scale pickers that concentrate on the selection and development of new creative talents or large-scale promoters that undertake the packaging and widespread distribution of established creative goods. In some activities, such as the performing arts, creative ventures facing high fixed costs turn to nonprofit firms.
To explain the logic of these arrangements, the author draws on the analytical resources of industrial economics and the theory of contracts. He addresses the winner-take-all character of many creative activities that brings wealth and renown to some artists while dooming others to frustration; why the "option" form of contract is so prevalent; and why even savvy producers get sucked into making "ten-ton turkeys," such as Heaven's Gate. However different their superficial organization and aesthetic properties, whether high or low in cultural ranking, creative industries share the same underlying organizational logic.

The underlying economic principles for many industries.......2007-01-13
Dozens of books on entertainment industries come out every year, but only few survive the test of time. This is one of them, and not precisely for the encyclopedic amount of information and references it presents (you can actually get many more references by sending an email to the author), or for its practical value --which in my opinion is high. The value of this book boils down to its elegant treatment of the economic logic behind seemingly unrelated businesses like moviemaking or ballet. The chapter on contracts for creative products is truly illuminating.
The author provides upfront the seven basic economic principles that affect all creative industries:
1. Demand is uncertain
2. Creative workers care about their product
3. Some creative products require diverse skills
4. Differentiated products.
5, 6, 7: read them yourself.
While everybody in the entertainment world might have their own list, this one is written and carefully developed by Richard Caves.
The format might be intimidating to some (e.g., no pictures, no tables, no flashy stuff), so don't buy it if you are not willing to invest a little time and brains to profit from the author's reasoning.
Okay for a look-see, but maybe not a great buy, per se. .......2007-01-04
Upon the suggestion of a very famous academic I purchased this text. This book is written by a famous Harvard economist, and I now know how much these highly esteemed professors can get away with. If you are looking for middle of the road quotes and want a new source for them, this book will easily do the trick. If you are seeking out a illuminating cover to cover text dealing with either Creative Industries or flat out Economics this book may leave you flat.
In all honesty, I did not complete this text and there is a strong likelihood that I never will. This is not to say it is without merits entirely (please note that I did give it 3 stars). It is just that the book very long and lacks an intimate feel of solidarity with either the artistic side or the commerce dealers. It covers a lot of ground, and I do believe that my wallet would have been better served if I had just spent an afternoon at the local University library thumbing the text and xeroxing what I deemed relevant.

Book Description
Central banks throughout the world have come to recognize the importance of price stability to the long-run health and prosperity of their economies. While countries and their central banks are embracing price stability as a primary long-term goal for monetary policy, they are adopting a variety of strategies to achieve it. Some banks, for example, have adopted explicit inflation targets. In other cases, institutional structures such as currency boards and monetary union have been suggested as vehicles for achieving and maintaining price stability.
To gain a better understanding of how central banks can best reduce inflation and what policies and operating procedures should be implemented to maintain price stability, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City sponsored a symposium entitled "Achieving Price Stability," held at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on August 29-31, 1996. A distinguished group of central bankers, academics, and financial market representatives shared their views and research results on this important monetary policy issue.
The papers, commentary, and discussions at the symposium were substantive and informative.
We hope these proceedings will contribute to a better understanding of how central banks can best achieve and maintain price stability. As recognized by all conference participants, price stability is monetary policy's major contribution toward maximizing long-run economic growth and, ultimately, raising standards of living.
The opening remarks are by Alan Greenspan, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

The Bicycling Guide to Complete Bicycle Maintenance and Repair: For Road and Mountain Bikes(Expanded and Revised 5th Edition)
ASIN: 1885593864 |
Customer Reviews:
Perfect Gift for Cycling Kids!.......2003-11-29
"Kids' Easy Bike Care" is a wonderful, thoughtful book authored by Steve Cole. Mr. Cole addresses all of the fundamentals of bike ownership and maintenance, and hass thoughtfully geared the book for the inquisitive youngster (and his or her parents) who is about to begin bicycle riding for the first time. From hand signals to the "five step tune-up", Mr. Cole covers all the bases. Moreover, Mr. Cole responsibly emphasizes the importance of "Safety First!", which is a crucial message that needs to be communicated to every child who sets upon a bike. The text of the book, coupled with clear and informative diagrams and illustrations (drawn by Sarah Rakitin), is easy to understand for kids and adults alike.
I believe that "Kids' Easy Bike Care" is a perfect gift (holiday, birthday, or otherwise) for bike-riding kids -- and I would especially encourage parents to purchase this book both for the novice bicyclists within their family, as well as for their own information. While I learned a lot from reading "Kids' Easy Bike Care" as an adult, I would have found this an invaluable resource as a child still learning to ride and take care of my bike. Great work, Mr. Cole!
Thank you, Steve Cole!.......2003-10-24
This book really tells you everything you need to know about caring for your bike including repairs, tune-ups, safety tips, etc. As other reviewers have said, it's a great resource for adults and kids alike. Sarah Rakitin's illustrations are both cute and helpful. A great addition to anyone's library!
A Classic!.......2003-10-15
This book could also be titled "Bicycle Repair for Dummies" and is on a par with that classic book on auto repair. The easy-to-read content includes basic information that every bicyclist (young or old) should know, but that most don't. If you ride a bike, you need this book. Also, the illustrations are superb and greatly help the reader identify parts, discover problems, and perform certain repair and maintenance techniques.
SENIOR ADULTS BECAME KIDS AGAIN.......2003-08-13
It is evident to me after reading this book, as a senior citizen who just bought a new bicycle, that the contents of this book are not just for kids. It was extremely helpful to both me and my husband who are SENIOR kids. This book would be a very appropriate purchase for anyone regardless of age who owns or is contemplating buying a bicycle. After reading this book, children of ALL AGES would gain the confidence to maintain and use their bicycle safely. This book should be available at all bicycle shops.
Excellent and fun book for kids who love bicycles.......2003-08-04
This is a creative book with delightful and practical illustrations. In an entertaining and instructive way, it teaches children responsibility to take care of their bikes. It also teaches important safety rules. Any child getting a new bicycle would benefit greatly by receiving a copy of this book. Even parents whose child owns a bicycle would benefit from reading this book. It is a great book for parents and kids to read together.

"Must Read" for ALL women!.......2006-07-10
This book is a "must read" for ALL women-Grandmas, Moms, Sisters, Friends, & Moms-To-Be! It is a quick-read, great for the beach or your baby's naptime. I loved the characters & how they each developed during Emily's journey from "before children" & forward through "motherhood". I could relate to just about everything she was going through & it made me feel "normal" despite our similar issues. Reading Elaine D. Fox's book was like relaxing with a glass of wine & having a fabulous "Girls Night Out." A great book to buy for your family & friends!
Warn, funny Novel A Must For Women of All Ages.......2005-12-05
No One Should Get Pregnant Alone is a heartwarming, humorous look at infertility, marriage and family. I loved the well written characters and found the story to be both compelling and haunting. I laughed out loud several times while reading this novel and was brought to tears as well. Elaine D. Fox is a fresh voice in the Chick Lit genre. This book is a great read for women of all ages-- it isn't just for women going through infertility, although they will find this novel particularly timely and poignant. I loved this book! I am going to buy it for my mother and sister!

Book Description
The Great Patriotic War began on 22 June 1941, when the Germans invaded the Soviet Union. Over 10 million Soviet soldiers took part in the war and of those about 12,600 earned the Soviet Union’s highest military award - the Hero of the Soviet Union - for deeds of great daring and self sacrifice. This book covers the male recipients of the Hero of the Soviet Union award during the Great Patriotic War. Snipers, fighter pilots, partisans and spies are all included, together with the famous aces Pokryshkin and Kozhedub, who both gained the award an amazing three times.
Customer Reviews:
Tales of Ivan at War!.......2007-10-06
Noted aviation historian Henry Sakaida shifts his sights in this Osprey 'Elite' volume, focusing on those Soviet soldiers, sailors, airmen and civilians who were awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union medal in World War II.
The HSU award was the USSR equivalent of the U.S. Medal of Honor or England's Victoria Cross. During the Great Patriotic War, over 11,600 individuals were awarded the HSU medal. Sakaida details the combat exploits of 27 HSU winners, dividing them into categories such as "Aviators," "Snipers," "Naval Troops," "Spies," "Partisans," "Infantrymen," etc.
The stories contained in this book certainly make for compelling reading. Included in this book are the likes of fighter ace Sultan Amet-Khan, spymaster Richard Sorge, sniper Vasily Zaitsev and submariner Alexandr Marinesko. Photographs or drawings of the HSU winners covered are included. Lastly, a color section includes artwork depicting various HSU combats.
As exciting as the HSU accounts are however, I have major problems in accepting these exploits as fact. I don't doubt that the HSU winners were brave men who sometimes accomplished incredible feats. However Stalin's government never let truth stand in the way of propaganda that aided the war effort against the hated Nazis.
Sakaida's book contains a number of official Soviet claims that cause one to question whether we're getting the true story - battles in which 100s of Germans are killed yet the HSU's unit suffers no losses, an infantry Captain who takes part in a 'High Noon' duel with a German officer, an IL-2 pilot credited with destroying large amounts of German equipment including 654 automobiles(!), numerous HSU winners who killed German generals, etc.
So, while the book makes for exciting reading, you really need to treat the historical claims made by the Soviet government as related in Sakaida's book with a healthy dose of skepticism. Yes, the book is an interesting, well-written, well-illustrated introduction to a fascinating subject...but...keep the salt shaker and a tablespoon handy!
A valuable addition to every WWII library.......2007-02-05
The author gives a lot of information regarding the prestigious Hero of the Soviet Union (HSU) award and after a brief description of the gold star medal itself and its history, he moves on to present the cases of some recipients from the air, ground and naval forces, including some partisans and spies. The details are very interesting and the stories some times border on the unbelievable. There is at least a black and white photograph of each HSU described and the author even uses the section of the color plates to add some more heroes! In some cases he also explains the medals worn by some decorated veterans, something that I found very informative. A nice short book on a little-known subject.
A very nice sequel!.......2005-09-08
This is a more traditional volume of work, the sequel to Heroines of the Soviet Union...yet it breaks ground in that author Henry Sakaida & artist Christa Hook take on some less than well known subjects and bring them to life magnificently. The stories are inspiring and worthy of Hollywood epics yet the men who lived them saw themselves as merely ordinary folk doing what needed to be done...and there is the genius of this book.
Highly recommended!
Watch out for Wartime Communist Propaganda.......2004-12-09
Although the Soviet Union awarded over 12,000 medals for valor in the Second World War, few of these men have even been heard of in the West. One suspects that even in Russia today, these heroes from sixty years ago are slipping into obscurity. Amateur historian Henry Sakaida is to be congratulated on bringing these men to light in Osprey Elite #111, Heroes of the Soviet Union 1941-45. Sakaida's narrative of the 30+ individuals that he profiles covers the gamut from aviators, to pilots, to snipers, to sailors, to tankers and infantrymen. Western readers can gain a good impression of the kind of troops that made up the Red Army in 1941-45 in these pages (at least the better ones). However, readers should be aware that the author accepts the Soviet-era claims about these men's exploits with few qualms and that the Soviet Government was more than willing to "manufacture" heroes as needed. While the majority of these men were probably genuine heroes, the exploits of some suggest imaginative citation-writing.
After a short introduction on "the Great Patriotic War," the author provides background on the Hero of the Soviet Union (HSU) award. Interestingly, the author provides data on medal's recipients by branch and ethnic group (e.g. 3 Chechens received the HSU). The author then provides capsule biographies of about 30 recipients of the HSU. The volume includes eight color plates: the Gold Star Medal and the Order of Lenin; sniper Ohlopkov; Lieutenant Gakhokidze at Sevastopol; spy Robert Klein; sailor Golubkov in Manchuria in 1945; pilot Maresyev; medic Kokorin; and partisan Kazei. The author provides no bibliography or notes on source material.
The author certainly provides some dramatic detail in these pages, such as the Soviet pilot who was captured and escaped in a commandeered Heinkel bomber or the naval commando Leonov. However, some of the Soviet-era claims appear pretty dubious. For example, the Soviets awarded the HSU to partisan leader Dmitri Medvedev, claiming that his unit had "killed more than 2,000 Germans, including 11 generals and high officials." Now, the German army in the Second World War had a ratio of perhaps 1 general officer for every 5,000 or more troops, so how likely is it that the Soviets would nail this many generals in one area? Not very likely. Furthermore, a number of citations claim that the recipient killed a German general, but not one is mentioned by name, date, or location, making crosschecking very difficult. Another "tale" that is very fishy is the account of the "Heroes of Taranovka Station," a small unit action near Kharkov in March 1943. This action was unusual because all 25 men in a Guards Rifle platoon received the HSU for this action, in which it was claimed that the platoon held off most of a German tank battalion and destroyed nearly half their vehicles. Taranovka Station is one of those fantasy worlds that Stalin used to like to make out of "dead heroes." As a former tanker, the idea that 25 infantrymen in wooden shacks, armed only with one light AT gun, a few mines and grenades could defeat a mixed force of German armor and mechanized infantry is just silly. Certainly the Guards platoon may have inflicted some damage, but the force ratio was just too unbalanced to be credible. Noticeably, the author avoids commenting on some of the more questionable claims - it appears that he might be concerned about offending some of his hosts.
This volume on the HSU goes well with other Osprey volumes on the Medal of Honor and Knights Cross winners (hopefully they will have one on the Victoria Cross as well), but the volumes from the totalitarian side of the street seem tinged with elements of wartime propaganda and hero creation. Readers from modern democracies should appreciate the sacrifices made by the Red Army in the Second World War (well, not maybe those sacrifices against the Poles or Finns in 1939) - it was the Red Army that did the most to defeat Nazi Germany - but should remain cognizant of the imperatives of Stalin's version of communism that underlay this cult of the hero.

800 Days on the Eastern Front: A Russian Soldier Remembers World War II (Modern War Studies)
ASIN: 0786708565 |
Book Description
For four years in World War II, out of an unquestioned love for their mother country, the Russian people heroically defended their soil with their blood -- most famously, as Harrison Evans Salisbury has demonstrated in The 900 Days, in the siege of Leningrad, and as Antony Beevor has shown in his monumental Stalingrad. This new volume by historian Albert Axell captures in full the valor of the sons and daughters, soldiers and villagers, Cossacks and snipers who battled in Moscow and Stalingrad, in the Caucasus and the Arctic, at the Brest fortress and Kursk Bulge. Their defense of Mother Russia, the battlefront that in World War II dwarfed all others, turned the tide of the war against Hitler and enabled the western democratic forces to reduce dramatically the number of their casualties. From the account of the aging Russian general who suffered drenchings in ice-cold water rather than collaborate with his Nazi captors to that of the nineteen-year-old private who flung himself on the gun port of a German pillbox so that his comrades could advance, these pages not only chronicle extraordinary selfless acts of heroism but also rectify an astonishing oversight in innumerable histories of World War II. The stories throughout are altogether remarkable -- like that of Alexei Maresyev, the pilot who crash-landed his plane, crawled in the snow for two weeks with the two broken legs he eventually lost, and with a pair of artificial limbs returned to the air to continue the fight for the country of his blood -- and dramatically illustrate how deeply patriotism and bravery lie in the Russian soul.

Tough People.......2003-12-24
This book is full of stories of brave men and women who fought a monstrous evil, did not whine about it, did not expect or ask for help.
They suffered dearly and were some of the bravest fighters ever.
Think of the Alamo defenders on a huge scale.
History Falsification.......2002-12-24
This book is the real example how Communists and Soviet Union did the falsifications of the real history. I started reading that book and it looks like the author used the sources the KGB provided specially for him. You cannot compare that book with Enemy at the Gates by William Craig, where the different sources were used in order to help readers to understand the real history of the WWII. I would recommend reading that book to anybody who wants to get the real picture about WWII and how Soviet Union won the battles. But Albert Axell copied the books I used to read when I was a kid in Soviet Union and our grandfathers told us that the real history of that war is different.
Courage and Sacrifice.......2001-10-17
This book contains a series of anecdotally-presented portraits of Soviet sacrifice and courage during the four years of War. When the immensely powerful German forces invaded on 22-June 1941, neither the Allies nor the Nazis believed that Russia could long endure. Hitler had stated at a conference of his generals that Russia was to be "annihilated", her cities and everyone within to be destroyed. No one expected the resolve of the people to resist and defend their land. Noted historian Albert Axell compiled many of these portraits of ordinary Soviet soldiers and their often extraordinary heroism from his personal interviews with veterans and/or their surviving families. Others derive from Western eye-witness sources and German military records. The end result is an apolitical collection, free from Soviet wartime hagiographics -- for the most part, that is. Included, notwithstanding, are the romanticized legends from frontline propaganda: teenaged partisan Zoya Kosmodem'yanskaya's patriotic exhortations following her unspeakable torture, and sniper Vasiliy Zaitsev's duel with the German master-shooter. But the majority of the narratives are straight-forward, unembellished recollections. Also featured are biographies of less famous but no less proficient snipers Lyudmila Pavlichenko, Fyodor Okhlopkov, and Nina Lobkovskaya. Here, too, are accounts of the defense of the Fortress of Brest, and anecdotes of civilian valor during the battle of Stalingrad and the blockade of Leningrad. Here are interviews with Nadya Popova, a pilot from an all-female bomber regiment; Alexei Mares'yev, a pilot who lost his legs but returned to fly with artificial limbs; and a few desperate aviators who survived "taran" (ramming) Luftwaffe planes. And here is the fate of Yakov Dzhugashvili, a POW disowned by his father, Josef Stalin. Among "Russia's Heroes" are representatives of a wide spectrum of Soviet citizens: Ukrainians, Georgians, Siberians, Eastern Asians, Cossack cavalrymen, and Jewish generals. As a daughter of a seaCaptain of the North Atlantic Convoys, I'm especially proud that Allied merchant mariners had been honored as Soviet heroes and are included in this book! In recent years many of the specific topics of Axell's research have been presented in greater depth, but "Russia's Heroes" provides a fast-paced and fascinating overall view of the human dimension on the Eastern Front.

Product Description
"My memory is etched with a clear image of how that bird swung into view and hung over me, suspended like an angel, so starkly black and white, with its wide-scissored split of a tail."
It took just one sighting of a swallow-tailed kite to dispatch Susan Cerulean on a pilgrimage through its fragmented and ever-shrinking habitats. In Tracking Desire, Cerulean immerses us in the natural history and biology of Elanoides forficatus. At the same time, she sifts through her past--as a child, student, biologist, parent, and activist--to muse on a lifelong absorption with nature.
Customer Reviews:
High-flying tales.......2005-12-06
The book, 'Tracking Desire: A Journey After Swallow-tailed Kites', is a wonderful story of coming to awareness both of the natural world and its beauty as well as a personal journey of awakening to the world around us.
The author, Susan Cerulean, has a wonderful way with words - she is very imaginative in her descriptions. For example, she describes the kites, the bird in primary focus here, as 'living origami' and 'exotic black-and-white blossoms', and describes their flight in mesmerizing language. She writes about her growing awareness of the habits and patterns of the swallow-tailed kites, a bird that was once far more prominent than it is today. This draws her into a community of bird-watchers and scientists who, in the midst of their lives otherwise, come together in slowly widening circles to follow the progress of the kites.
Cerulean also brings much of her own experience with life into the book. She describes her relationships with her husband, her son, and other birders, such as biologist Ken Meyer. She describes experiences growing up, going to college, and moving about, eventually ending up in Florida. One memorable scene involves her grandfather and his battle with the garden in Florida, and the grapefruit tree in particular. It shows the difference of perspectives, as Cerulean writes that once it was cut down (after a long period of battle with the branches), 'the only plant that had really interested me in his manicured lawn was gone.' This echoes the slow decline of habitat of the kites over the decades, and the way life itself can slowly ebb away in unexpectedly depressing ways.
This isn't a story about loss, however, but rather one of discovery, perhaps even revelation. The parallels that are drawn between the lives of the birds and the lives of the humans in Cerulean's story are very interesting; the divergences also prove to be fascinating. One such is the search for stories about the kites - such dramatic creatures warrant dramatic stories, but the search was initially fruitless. Eventually, by expanding her horizons, Cerulean would come to discover a remarkable collection of tales and mytho-poetic images involving the impressive kites.
This is a beautifully crafted narrative, flying gracefully from highlight to highlight, and engaging the readers to want to learn more about the kites and themselves.
