No one disputes the centrality of cult activity in the lives of individuals and communities in ancient Greece. The significance of where people worshipped their gods has been far less acknowledged. In 1884 Francois de Polignac argued that the placing of cult centres played a major part in establishing the concept of the city-state in archaic Greece. The essays in this collection, headed by that of de Polignac himself in which he re-assesses his position, critically examine the social and political importance of sanctuary placement, not only by re-examining the case of the archaic Greece discussed by de Polignac, but by extending analysis both back to Mycenaean times and onwards to Greece under Roman occupation. These essays reveal something of the complexity of relations between religion and politics in ancient Greece, demonstrating how vital factors such as tradition, gender relations, and cult identity were in creating and maintaining the religious mapping of the Greek countryside.

Placing the theories.......2004-08-17

There is a lot to digest in this book. From the origins of Mycennaean sanctuaries and palaces as cultic centers to the placement of Demetrian sanctuaries in the Greek cities of ancient times, but all in all the essays here give one a good impression of the ideas and theories behind the various topics.

The only problem with a book like this one is the disjointed feeling one gets from it because it is a book of essays rather than a cohesive work.

One things is certain, you will want to seek out further information about almost every single one of the theories presented here, and that in itself is a good thing.

It develops these issues through combining multi-disciplinary theoretical analysis with varied cases of prohibitions on "conventional" and " unconventional" weapons (e.g., biological weapons, landmines, nuclear weapons) through customary and statutory law, multilateral treaties, UN resolutions, and national legislation.

Brilliant - a Model for Field Guides!.......2007-06-01

After I received my copy of this book, I was blown away by how good it is!
The illustrations are absolutely beautiful. The warblers in particular are so life-like they are looking straight into your eyes warily, seemingly ready to fly off the pages at any moment!
Editing is well done, with clear range maps and all the info you might need about the birds found on the pages right opposite the colour pages where each species is illustrated.
Before these species accounts, the book has an excellent chapter on birdwatching in the region, with detailed information on the key sites of every single country covered, even accompanied by good maps of every island worth visiting. Such a good combination of a field guide and a site guide is very rare indeed.
All in all: perfect!
Whether you are thinking of visiting several or only one of the the countries covered here, this is THE book to take.
