Book Description
In the early years of this century, William Pennington and Lisle Updike roamed the Four Corners area of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona, photographing people and landscapes. They traveled on horseback, by narrow gauge railroad, horse-drawn wagon, or Model T Fords, sometimes working together from the studio they shared in Durango, sometimes working alone. They went to mining camps in the nearby rugged San Juan Mountains as well as to the Navajo, Jicarilla, Apache, Acoma, and Zuni Indian reservations. What they preserved in their photographs takes the viewer back to a vanished era, but exquisitely preserves a sense of both time and place.
Now, for the first time, H. Jackson Clark has collected the entire corpus of Pennington and Updike's wonderful images in Glass Plates & Wagon Ruts. Taken together, these photographs--highly valued and eagerly sought by collectors--comprise a provocative visual record of the southwest that is of interest to anybody who loves this beautiful country and its colorful past.

Fabulous and Worthwhile Photographs.......2004-02-18
I love the photographs in "Glass Plates and Wagon Ruts." This book, by H. Jackson Clark, records the history of Lisle Update and William Pennington, who creates an amazing photoarchive of the American Southwest in the first several decades of the twentieth century.
Clark presents nearly 100 classic photographs, around which he tells the story of constant travel in the Four Corners states by these two reknown photographers. Many of these photos are of Native Americans, both in the Pueblos of New Mexico, and in Navajo and Apache territory in Arizona. The prints, in particular, represent some of the best photo portraits from these cultures in existence.
Some of the pictures will just surprise you. My favorite is one of the Wright Brothers' plane, flown at a fair in Colorado in 1914. I really enjoyed this book. If you have an interest in the Southwest, or in old photography, the chances are good that you will, too.
Disappointed in quality of prints.......1999-09-23
I learned about this book from a review in the "Lands End" catalogue, of all places, and was thrilled by the quality and depth of the prints. I thereupon decided that I had to have the book. However, I was really disappointed. In my opinion, the prints reproduced in the book do not come anywhere close to the quality of the prints in the Lands End catalogue. The prints in the book look washed out and blurred, whereas Lands End prints were sharp, with plenty of detail.
Why is Amazon selling this at full price?.......1999-07-26
Why is Amazon selling this book at full price
The beauty of these photographs left me speechless........1999-07-23
If there was not one line of prose in this book, the photographs would be more than worth the price of the book. We have grown up with images from the movies and television. These photographs portray the real American Indian. I found myself with a lense studying the detail of the clothing, beads and headdresses and eventually transported by the expresses. What were these people thinking as they poised? Are we the readers the ones that are really caught in time?

Book Description
By distinguishing between classical Marxist and neo-Marxist approaches to imperialism, this volume challenges generally accepted views on the relationship between these two branches of Marxist thought, reaffirming the principles and tools of fundamental Marxism as essential for understanding and explaining the internationalization of capitalist economic life. Together, original source materials and Polychroniou's highly readable analysis present a commentary both outlining and clarifying essential ideas contained in Marxist writings from the late 19th century to the present. Marxist Perspectives on Imperialism also identifies current political and economic issues to which authentic Marxist concepts can be applied. A review of Marx's views on capitalist production relations and expansion opens the discussion and defines criteria for evaluating analyses which follow. Studies by classical Marxists such as Hilferding, Bukharin, and Lenin are then contrasted to the neo-Marxist writings of Baran, Frank, and Wallerstein, among others. Polychroniou's defense of orthodox Marxism strengthens as he turns his attention to the practical uses of Marxist ideology to topics of international concern. His conclusions clarify a complex topic and provide political economists, sociologists, and political scientists with a clear explanation of the theoretical and methodological contours of Marxist thought on capitalist imperialism.

Book Description
Many of today's new democracies are constrained by institutional forms designed by previous authoritarian rulers. In this timely and provocative study, Delia M. Boylan traces the emergence of these vestigial governance structures to strategic behavior by outgoing elites seeking to protect their interests from the vicissitudes of democratic rule.
One important outgrowth of this political insulation strategy--and the empirical centerpiece of Boylan's analysis--is the existence of new, highly independent central banks in countries throughout the developing world. This represents a striking transformation, for not only does central bank autonomy remove a key aspect of economic decision making from democratic control; in practice it has also kept many of the would-be expansionist governments that hold power today from overturning the neoliberal policies favored by authoritarian predecessors.
To illustrate these points, Defusing Democracy takes a fresh look at two transitional polities in Latin America--Chile and Mexico--where variation in the proximity of the democratic "threat" correspondingly yielded different levels of central bank autonomy.
Boylan concludes by extending her analysis to institutional contexts beyond Latin America and to insulation strategies other than central bank autonomy. Defusing Democracy will be of interest to anyone--political scientists, economists, and policymakers alike--concerned about the genesis and consolidation of democracy around the globe.
Delia M. Boylan is Assistant Professor, Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies, University of Chicago.

Guinness in Black and White!.......2000-03-15
The only Black and White in this book are the pints of Guinness. A wonderfully rich source of full color examples of Guinness Advertising campaigns, from Gilroy to Television. A good reference on the art of one of the most successful advertising campaigns in history. With interesting discussions on the various campaigns. A must have not only for Guinness Fans but for anyone interested in graphic design and advertising.
Guinness is good for you.......2000-02-14
First of all, Guinness is the most exotic and delicious drink there is. Call me biased, but oh the pleasure of watching it settle after pouring it into a nice clear glass! I have loved guinness ever since I had my first pint. I am also an artist, and I fell in love with John Gilroy's wonderful advertising artwork which made Guinness popular. This book is a bible for those of you who love this drink, it is simply beautiful. I catch myself looking through it, and my mouth starts to water, and before long, a fresh pint is before me. I feel lucky to have a copy of this book, as I know of nobody else that has one. 5 stars all the way baby! If you truly love the drink, love the advertising campaign, and just plain love yourself, you will have this book on your coffee table before long.
a great book of images for the discerning guinness drinker.......1999-11-11
This is a great source book for those who love: 1. drinking guinness 2. guinness advertising. It is a book primarily for those who adore every aspect of guinness's imagery. It is crammed full of pictures. It was bang up to date with the latest advertising when it was originally published last year. Unfortunately the book seems to concern itself with english language adverts, although it does contain chapters on worldwide advertising and pays homage to John Gilroy, the spiritual father of Guinness advertising. Obviously everyone's favourite advertising image couldn't be included but I doubt that there would be many disappointed or disaffected devotees. This is I believe Jim Davies second book on Guinness advertising (correct me if i'm wrong!) the first having been published circa.1981, now sadly out of print. If I was to criticise the book it would only to say that it lacks text,(it's a coffee-table book) and that at 237 pages, it is way too short!

Customer Reviews:
This worked like a charm!.......2002-04-20
I used the techniques outlined in this book and bought a business without paying even one dollar out of my pocket. I highly recommend these techniques, but you have to be willing to work, and to work the system.
Too difficult to implement.......2002-03-25
Most sellers of small businesses expect all cash deals. Taking them from that to carrying a majority of the purchase price is a looong way. When I read this book, it didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, and didn't answer my questions effectively on how to actually make this kind of deal happen in reality. I ended up not using anything in the book, when I made my business purchase.
Great Book!.......2001-11-02
I bought 3 books to learn about purchasing a business. This one is by far the best I've read. The author gives realistic rules of thumb that you can use to evaluate any business based on the gross sales - how much you can expect to pay for it and how much you can expect to profit from it. I recommend this book to anyone who is considering owning their own business.
An honest, thorough guide to job security!.......1998-11-09
With all the books out there on finding prosperity, success and owning your own business, "How To Buy A Business With Little Or No Cash Down" is the one that delivers! The author spells out in easy to read terms how to achieve exactly what he titled the book and offers examples of the legal forms associated with expected transactions. He takes the reader step by step from beginning to closing. You entrepreneurs out there need this!
Book Description
How can children successfully survive the trauma of divorce? In friendly, heart-to-heart language, Archibald Hart offers divorced parents specific ways to help children cope with the psychological and social damage that comes with divorce.
Customer Reviews:
Helping Children Survive Divorce.......2006-08-05
This book is proving to be qute beneficial in helping our son's interaction with his two 11 and 15-year old sons during his divorce proceedings.
Shaming, condescending, unbalanced.......2005-11-24
I don't know where to start. My soon-to-be exhusband and I just threw the thing in the trash. This book takes a very old-fashioned stance against divorce - it is not acceptable and you only deserve credit if you are being abandoned by your spouse. You are sentencing your child to a "forever funeral" and virtually reserving them a place in society as a hardened criminal. oh brother.
Excellent Work.......2005-04-26
Ann Milner's review (below) is just, well, strange. Dr. Hart does not blame absent fathers. Instead, his point is one of what he says is a critical factor in helping children through divorce: consistency. Whenever possible, maintaining relationships, friendships, etc, is a key in helping children through this traumatic time. Clearly, Ann missed the context.
This is a hugely helpful book. I read it as part of a required text in a Master's counseling class. As a child of divorce (years ago), I wish this book had been around for my parents. It was healing, even for me, years later.
Getting a divorce? Have children? This should be required reading.
hit home like a sock in the jaw.......2000-10-05
granted, not every syllable hit me-no book will do that. but i really wish i had this book-or that this was out-when i was a lot younger. having been through three divorces by the time i was 15 (my mom being the main person) i feel that it has royally affected me, to the point that in my adulthood i act some of these things out. every single topic here i've experienced-from depression to anxiety to self-esteem issues. my feelings were never considered as far as arguments being in front of me, my isolation in my room for days sometimes(i was a good boy because i was in my room always doing stuff, or outside playing-alone. yeah, sure, that's healthy), my sadness, and the topper: the attitude of 'never mind your feelings-what about mine?'-being used as the sanctuary from the storm. granted, it is better for kids to not see their parents in constant negativity and conflict, so in that sense okay. but most divorces are hostile and the child's feelings are never considered. and yes, we carry on what we see to our adulthood-we do have memories. i feel that the reason i choose the wrong person in relationships is that i choose what i'm used 2, and it's not the divorces themselves but the attitudes that i had to live with all my life-it's what you are used 2. i have plenty of memories i'd love to delete from the harddrive inside my skull. message to couples on the borderline of their relationship: check your egos at the door, consider how your behavior is affecting your kids and change it-now! -if necessary, and consider how your attitudes will affect your kids 4 the rest of their lives.
Remember the rule about assuming?.......2000-08-04
I had to mark "one star" since the reviewing system wouldn't allow me to give "zero stars". I was very disappointed to see that someone supposedly very educated would assume that the "absent father was the culprit." (see pages 91-92) Did he ever consider that there are fathers who wants equal time with their child(ren) but are denied time because their former and soon to be former wives have convinced others that the fathers are undeserving of such time? Imagine a wife who creates a massive amount of debt while her husband works two jobs to pay the bills, she begins an extramarital relationship with a co-worker, she hides her commission money from her husband, she leaves her husband with all of the bills, she files for a divorce, she files for custody in order to limit a child's time with his father, and she files for child support in order to get child support money even though he is still paying all of the bills that she accumulated only because they are considered joint debts and he doesn't want to damage his credit. Who is really the "culprit"? I returned this book to Amazon.com, and I will never read another book by this author again!

Book Description
The important 1916 Anglo-French offensive comprising the battles of the Somme marked a change in the Allies' relationships, with the British beginning to play a more important role. From contemporaries to the present the Somme has also produced a number of controversies. Was the terrible bloodshed justified by the results? Were the tactics used the best possible under the circumstances? Was the new technology, especially the tank, used as effectively as possible? This book shows the current state of historians' interpretations of the Somme. The initial section of the book presents the historical background of the offensive and lays out the major interpretative disputes about it. The section identifies scholars and works in each school of thought, enables readers to determine where a specific work fits in the spectrum of views, and provides cross references to the bibliography. The second section provides an annotated bibliography of more than 700 entries.

Book Description
Nebraska sits at the nexus of continental bird migration and serves as a home—either permanently or seasonally—for nearly 450 species. Major migratory routes pass through the state, creating numerous opportunities to observe the great variety of North American bird species. The annual crane migrations in spring are legendary, and other key events include winter concentrations of bald eagles, flocks of up to thirty thousand grebes, mergansers, and gulls at Lake McConaughy in late fall, and incredible concentrations of waterfowl in the Rainwater Basin in early spring.
Birds of Nebraska captures the variety of Nebraska's ornithological possibilities in a style useful to hobbyists and professionals alike. For the first time in Nebraska ornithology, the authors have provided an exhaustive summary of state bird records compiled into concise but readable accounts of all species of birds reported in the state. This work covers taxonomy, early and late migration dates, high counts, nesting areas, and likely viewing locations.
Customer Reviews:
The bird book Nebraska deserves.......2002-03-09
Nebraska is known to the North American birding community almost exclusively for a single phenomenon: the spectacular spring migration of waterfowl and cranes along the Platte River in late March. The state is otherwise largely terra incognita to all but locals, who have managed to keep its ornithological riches a relative secret. But anyone who has spent time in the forests of the southeast, the wooded buttes of the northwest, or the vast prairies of the sandhills knows that here lie treasures. Few other states boast such a large and varied avifauna, its components drawn from east, west, north and south; regular breeders include Acadian Flycatcher and Cordilleran Flycatcher, Blue Jay and Pinyon Jay, Long-billed Curlew and American Woodcock, and the birder with time and a full tank of gas can find all these and many more such pairs in a single day in the field.
Finding out about these treasures has been difficult. Birding in Nebraska in most of the twentieth century was a particularist affair, meaningful communications generally oral and private. All this has changed, however, with the publication of Ross Silcock et al.'s new Birds of Nebraska, an exemplary production providing native and visitor alike with a comprehensive introduction to the state's birds. Each of the 440+ species so far recorded is treated fully, with detailed summaries of its temporal and geographic distribution, abundance, and status in the state. For out-of-staters, rudimentary bird-finding information is provided, its usefulness varying with its specificity: for some species, directions are provided to likely sites, while for others the advice consists solely in the identification of promising habitat types.
The book is handsomely and well produced by the University of Nebraska Press. Editorial slips are remarkably few for a work of this scope and detail; spelling errors ("Ulnus" for "Ulmus," for example) are nearly non-existent, and the prose is generally clear and readable. Nebraska birders, it goes without saying, will find this the most useful book on their birding bookshelf, but the rest of us too will profit from the impressive new standard set by this work.
