Good for serious fans of tattoo.......2000-05-02

This is a wonderful book for anyone who appreciates the art of tattoo. The subject matter is much more varied & interesting than that found in newsstand tattoo magazines.

There are 128 pages of high quality photos on heavy stock. These include many close-ups of beautifully & intricately tattooed people. Also, many tattoo artists from around the world are shown working.

One of the most interesting features of the book is several pages of old clippings and cartoons. There are some fascinating and bizarre stories here. Otherwise, there is no text. Sources & tattoo artists are listed in the back.

The book does contain some nudity, but it is not overwhelming. The emphasis is on the art. The variety here makes it exciting to turn each page.

Too basic and outdated.......2004-08-30

When the description says "beginner", it means it. Most of the book is dedicated to topics geared toward someone who has not yet purchased a digital camera. I was expecting something to teach me how to get the most from the one I have already bought. Plus, given the rapid improvements in technolgy, a lot of the comments he makes are now incorrect or irrelevant (digital SLR's start at $4000, for instance).

very little information.......2007-04-03

i was very disappointed in this book. i thought it would give some valid tips on how to take better pictures of the kids. after the usual "how to use your camera" (i have a manual for that), and covering the different cameras i can buy (already have a camera - thanks), it goes on to say very, very little about how to set up and compose better pictures.

Short, concise, useful introduction to a neglected subject.......2005-01-20

I bought this book a long time ago early in my career when I was first exposed to affluent business trips and executive-level meetings. Coming from a very middle-class background, I did not grow up with the training and experience that many upper-class people get by virtue of their lifestyles. I had no clue about table manners, tipping, and courtesies with high-level executives.

Ms. Sabath may not be the final word on business etiquette, but her advice has worked well for me over the years. This book is short and sweet, and you can reread it on the airplane to ensure that you make a good impression at that important social or business occasion. I am a happy customer.

Better books elsewhere.......2002-12-27

Useful tidbits here and there, but the advice is sometimes questionable and occasionally misleading. The most serious flaw is that she fails to describe the range of accepted etiquette and then explain which guidelines she prefers and why. Instead, she presents only her opinion, providing only one option from a range of possibilities.

She also has an annoying tendency to depart from etiquette (guidelines for dress and behavior) and into management (advice for interacting with peers and subordinates). Given her limited experience in management, the quality of her advice on conflict management and project management is quite low. It would have been much more useful had she elaborated on acceptable etiquette and differing opinions on acceptable etiquette and cut her weak advice on management.

In the end, everything I got out of this book I got out of reading People Skills or How to Win Friends and Influence People. I would recommend those titles over this one. If you need a good book on etiquette, you'll have to look elsewhere.

Promo piece for their other business - in a nutshell........2006-07-06

This book gives you basic info on how to conduct business - that's available gratis. Chapter 7 was a major dissapointment. If they weren't willing to share their secrets, then why write a book? Oh, I know...because there's more...an insidious way of promoting their "other" company.

Nice try, but I can see right thru this weak marketing effort.

I returned my book to Borders. Keep your receipt, as you will be dissapointed with their banal Ginsuism.

I am writing to express my delight in reading,"The Wisdom of Ginsu".

I am a small business owner and have shelves of books by successful business persons.
This book I couldn't put down... read it in a day and a half, and that's while working!

I just wanted to make contact and say thanks for the down to earth style. I do things in everyday business that I have
never found affirmation for. The many examples in your book affirm to me that I am on target a good percentage of the time.
I have even started answering all my cell phone calls! The book makes you want to put their advice into practice, and that is
unusual.

I am a manufacturer. Over the years I have developed ways of processing that I have guarded like a mother hen. Many have given me grief for being so protective. When I read the chapter on guarding your secrets I smiled continually. I never had a mentor.
The advice in this book was the first time anyone wrote like they were writing specifically to me.

Small business is a gauntlet, this book is a drink of cool water. It was to me anyhow.

Bill Gates, Walt Disney, Donald Trump . . . pioneers. Add the Ginsu Guys to that list immediately for coming up with the most ingenious television marketing strategy ever to grace television. Since then, advertisers have only copied their ideas. I can't imagine anyone better to get advice from than the originals.

I just can't believe that I finally get to learn the story behind the knives that have been ingrained in our society from the time of their introduction! BLOWN AWAY!!!

Amazing Changes in Fifteen Years.......2006-02-26

More than just a study of how the modern American military goes to war, this book is a study of the conflict in Iraq since Gulf I.

It covers the impact of the Goldwater-Nichols defense department reorganization that has worked wonders in reducing inter-service rivalry and which was first put to the test in Gulf I.

It covers the changes in munitions, equipment, training, recon that comprise the present day forces.

It is also the most complete story I've seen on what Saddam was doing during the gaps between Gulf I and Gulf II. You get the feeling that a local, not well educated or travelled person, focused on his own issues just couldn't see what his statements were saying to the rest of the world.

My only complaint is that the book ends just a little bit too early. There's not much on hos we are to get out of the mess that exists over there now. This is a book on how the military fights wars, not on how we conduct the peace afterwards.

Highly recommended.

Very Good Overview.......2002-04-18

This is a very complete book about the Gulf War. The author splits the book into two parts. The first part follows the political process leading up to the air and ground war and the second part of the book covers the battle. What is interesting with this book is that, as the author is from the UK, he tends to take a more worldview on his writing. He does not just focus solely on the U.S. and Bush, but also covers the UK and EU positions. This book is a nice complement to the book The Commanders by Woodward because of the focus of the Freedman book on the politics outside the US and the Woodward books focus on the U.S. side.

The swift onset of the Persian Gulf War took many observers (and many television viewers) by surprise. It had, historians Khadduri and Ghareeb note, been a long time coming, however. Kuwait had been artificially severed from Iraq at the end of British colonial rule in 1921, and Iraq had long been seeking access to Kuwaiti ports on the Gulf that, had it been granted, might have forestalled war. Carefully tracing the history of the 1990-91 conflict, the authors suggest that Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait followed a certain logic, but not an inevitable one, and that the Allied powers perhaps should have waited for a peaceful Iraqi withdrawal. Theirs is a controversial reading of history, but one that merits an audience.

For most Americans, the war against Iraq lingers in memory as a vast morality play, a drama offering ready made heroes and villains: a glowering dictator in military uniform, hapless Kuwaiti refugees with tales of persecution, plucky pilots with high-tech wizardry, and a defiant American president, ringing Churchillian as he drew a line in the sand. But this characterization of the war is greatly oversimplified, a one-dimensional portrait, lacking in context and nuance. In War in the Gulf, 1990 91, eminent scholars Majid Khadduri and Edmund Ghareeb paint a very different picture, one that brings historical depth to the portrait, and displays the actions of many of the participants in a new and revealing light. Khadduri and Ghareeb offer a far more accurate and complex portrait of the Iraq-Kuwait conflict, providing a wealth of background information not readily available before. They made a distinction between the differences between Iraq and Kuwait over frontiers, territory, and sovereignty and the method pursued by Iraqi leaders to resolve those differences. They explore, for instance, the history of relations between Iraq and Kuwait, revealing that Kuwait had once been a part of Basra (in southern Iraq) during the Ottoman rule, and only became a separate country while under British control (it was the British in fact who drew the much-disputed boundary line between Iraq and Kuwait). Khadduri and Ghareeb describe the many decades of struggle to resolve the boundary issue, examining the repeated attempts by other Arab states to mediate according to Islamic traditions of consultation and peaceful resolution within the faith. The authors also show how Saddam Husayn's war with Iran exacerbated the boundary tensions. Because of the decade-long war, Iraq badly needed oil revenue to repay wartime loans and to rebuild, but Kuwait persisted in pumping far beyond its OPEC quota, driving down prices, and costing Iraq billions of dollars of revenue. The book reveals how Kuwait spurned Arab attempts to mediate this clash over oil prices as well as the longstanding boundary dispute, frustrating efforts to resolve this crisis by peaceful means. In one particularly interesting section, the book examines the diplomatic talks during the early summer of 1990, both among various Arab nations (most notably, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Kuwait), and with Saddam Husayn and the United States (they show how messages from Washington and a visit by a congressional delegation lead by Senator Dole convinced the Iraqi leaders that they would be allowed to settle their problems with Kuwait without outside interference). Khadduri and Ghareeb carry us through to the present, exploring the war and its aftermath, from the uprisings against Baghdad, to the continuing U.N. sanctions, to the recent defections from Saddam's inner circle. War in the Gulf is a balanced, eye-opening account of one of the central events of recent years. For anyone studying the Mid East, this is a must read........2002-01-18

The book paints a full picture of the historical dispute between Iraq and Kuwait, which basically started in 1899 when the Kuwaiti royal family made secret deals with the British. It carefully goes over the personalities involved and how they tried to shape the situation. The reading can get slow at times if the reader is unaccustomed to the various spellings of Arabic names and locations, i.e. Husayn = Hussein, Makkah = Mecca. However, the information provided gives a clear insight to the logic of the Iraqi invasion of 1990 and subsequent Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Whether or not one agrees with the conclusions of the authors, it definitely is a wealth of information on the subject. This is a must read for all interested in Mid East politics.
