Expensive, but an indispensible designer's resource.......2006-12-28
Like the title of this book states, this book features many if not all of the "skins" that cover or make up a building today. This book is one stop source for professionals or building enthusiasts who want to know about the many different types of materials that are used on exterior facades. Many architects, generally speaking, are well verse in the program, function and design of a building, but are not as keen on the various "skins" of a building. This is where the book comes in handy. With over 500 pages of content arranged into sections for each type of material (ie. glass, metals, plastics, etc.) Each spread contains a specific type of material with an explanation of its origins, technical aspect, and applications along with a photo of its application on an actual building and an enlarged photo of the material itself. This reference book should be priceless for professionals who have the layout and form set, but are debating which material to use in building it.

This book was OK.......2006-03-20
I bought this for its 'classroom' style, but unfortunately, I haven't gotten much out of it. The pictures weren't even good examples for me to mimic. I guess I'm glad to have it for future reference, but I did cancel "Studio Photography" off of my order once I read through "Location Photography".

Book Description
Job loss is a reality in today's marketplace, but it's not the death knell for your career. In You're Fired!: A Unique Approach To Rebuilding Your Life one learns how to recover from the loss and begin to rebuild. Many books touch upon the surface elements of job loss, such as writing a resume or successful interview techniques. You're Fired! delves beneath the surface to uncover the emotional and psychological supports that must be reinforced before updating your resume and scheduling interviews. As Denis J. Baker, Vice-President/Human Resources, Saint-Gobain Corp., Norton Co., states: You're Fired!: A Unique Approach To Rebuilding Your Life reads like a novel. Through the experience of a `company' man suddenly confronted with the loss of his job, Dr. Berman shows us how to deal effective-ly with the emotional and psychological aspects of losing a job. Unlike the conventional textbook approach, Dr. Berman's book is easy reading yet packed with valuable insight and advice for anyone facing this traumatic life change.

What does it mean to be a man? That definition is constantly changing. So are men's health concerns. This comprehensive manual takes on even the most intimate of issues that men (come on now) find important, like penis size. But more than that, it's a common sense guide to obtaining health, happiness and well-being.
Book Description
With everything we know today about health and physical fitness, it's surprising to learn that American men are nearly 10 times more likely to be overweight then they were a century ago. Now, with the publication of Men's Fitness Magazine's Complete Guide to Health and Well Being, the editors of Men's Fitness magazine with the aid of a distinguished 22-member editorial board have put together the ultimate reference for men seeking to maximize all aspects of their well-being, whether physical or psychological. Stressing a "total health" approach, the book addresses a broad spectrum of issues that affect and concern men of all ages and lifestyles.
Men's Fitness Magazine's Complete Guide to Health and Well-Being is a one-stop resource for men who want to take charge of their total wellness. The book covers the full range of men's physical and psychological needs from exercise, health, diet and nutrition to self-improvement, body image, stress management and personal relationships.
Filled with charts, self-tests, and sidebars, this book links physical and emotional health and fitness to give an informative and unique perspective on the increasingly popular topic of men's health.

Up Ship!.......2002-02-02
An outstanding work, superbly ullustrated, which tells one not only everything one needs to know about the U.S. Navy's airship program, but also provides a full description of the technical aspects of airship design, construction and operation -- information applicable to all airships, not just those of the USN. A very balanced presentation in which the author displays both an appreciation of the romantic nature of airships, and an awareness of their limitations.
One of the best books on the US Navy airship program!.......1997-11-11
Douglas Robinson is one of the best-known historians of the airship with good reason. This book delves into the politics, the men, and the ships of the US Navy airship program & gives a very complete picture of the what was done right, what was done wrong, and why the program eventually met its fate.

Customer Reviews:
Everyday dress.......2007-07-22
This book was not what I expected. it had basic drawings of a few garments from colonial america and showed some native american garments. I wish it had more in it. It was very short and I expected it to have more pictures of the clothing in it.
Great for beginners!.......2001-07-11
This is a great book for those looking to get basic knowledge of late 18th century clothing. It has clear illustrations of the everyday garments worn by men, women, and children. It shows layer by layer the many garments being used at this time. I have seen other "beginner" costume books leave the reader baffled as to how and when a garment was used; that isn't a problem with this book. One thing to remember is that fashion was in transition at this point in history so the patterns are really only good if you are trying to reproduce dress specific to that time frame. I have been studying this field for over ten years so this book was not of much use to me, but I would definately recommend it as a good foundation for a beginner.
Help the way I like it.......2001-06-25
I ordered this book a few weeks ago. I have been looking for books to help make costumes to take my grandchildren to reenactments, which has stimulated their intrest in history. This book is the most balanced book I have seen-in that it tells you what you want to know, why it was what it was, and it is easy to read and understand. It covers men and women's clothing, with illustrations and graft patterns, along with fabrics and sewing techniques. I find this book delightful with information put in a fun and usable way. There are not enough book's that I have found on everyday dress, so this is a great and much needed addition.
Book Description
Geared towards casual woodworkers and enthusiastic DIYers, this book opens the door to stylish, affordable furniture that anyone can build! The step-by-step instructions cover 20 projects including high-use household items such as futons, armoires, lamps, dressers and nightstands. All of the designs:

-Produce sturdy furniture designed for the long haul
It's perfect for those on a budget or just testing their woodworking skills -- or both!
Customer Reviews:
Not in my house!.......2007-01-27
This is rediculous. There is no way someone would put these projects inside of a home! C'mon.... exposed plywood?!? Not in my house!
Great for college students or others on a budget.......2006-11-06
Are you a cash-strapped college student, a single person or couple just starting out, or just a minimalist? Do you need furniture? Do you have some basic tools, or access to them, and at least average intelligence?
If you meet the above qualifications you will find this book helpful. It shows how to build simple, very sturdy, somewhat funky looking bed stands, dressers, etc.
These aren't my kind of pieces, but I enjoyed the author's laid back attitude, environmental sensitivity and willingness to stand out in the crowd.
Especially helpful if you are into the looks of the 1960s, this book will teach you the basics of woodworking, including the skills which you can use to build "nicer" pieces when you've got the cash.
Or you can just stick with the designs in this book, and someday end up on one of those "weird home" shows on the Discovery Channel. Either way, it's all good!
NOT furniture in the sense of something you'd be proud to have made..........2006-10-28
The cover of this book is a bit misleading. The detailed plans call for really unsatisfactory approaches. These include plywood with bare edges on many projects, pegboard screwed on the front of a box for a clothes hamper, and end-screwed supports on a bookcase.
There is nothing WRONG with furniture like this - if you want weak, visually unappealing furniture that will give you splinters in a year or two. But you don't need this book to help you build such pieces. This is all furniture anyone who can hold a saw or start a drill can easily figure out with a sketchpad. For the cost of materials you can get a better solution at IKEA.
The book's one redeeming feature: the pictures inside are true to the projects - rough cuts, bare edges and ungainly proportions all show clearly in the illustrations. You will get what you see, and you won't struggle much to achieve it.
There are far better books available with good starter projects that will teach you the RIGHT way to make joints, finish edges, and use attractive proportions: Danny Proulx' books are almost all good, with both plans and plentiful illustrations - such as "Build your Own Home Office Furnuiture", and "Fast and Easy Techniques for building modern cabinetry"
both use inexpensive materials and good techniques to build pieces of which you can be proud.
For good PLANS (but less instruction) you might want ot try : Quick and easy weekend woodworking Projects, and Build Your Own Contemporary Furniture (both also published by Popular woodworking mag and available on Amazon).
Your project might not come out looking quite as nice as the picture, but you have a fighting chance of building something above dorm-room rejects.
If its worth doing, its worth doing right.
Save your money!.......2006-10-27
This book went into the garbage can 10 minutes after perusal. The projects are very simple but fit into no decor of any home I have ever been in. The coffee table in particular, looks like something found in the 1950's, without the "retro" appeal. In fact IMHO even the pictures of the projects found in this book would have very limited appeal to anyone.
Easy.......2006-05-12
These really are quick projects anyone can start and finish in a day. The pictures are informative, the plans easy to follow. Best of all, you might find yourself planning more complicated jobs based on these simpler projects.

Book Description
Restructuring Caring Labour is a collection of essays that together take two disparate areas, economic restructuring and caring labour, and attempts to map out how the macro processes of economic restructuring are experienced by women at the micro level in terms of the increased labour and costs that they carry in relation to their care of others--children, spouses, aging parents, and extended families alike. Each of the pieces in this collection examines the changing social conditions that shape the different types of paid and unpaid work that women do. As well, the papers share an analytic framework: to document how economic and social restructuring affects the responsibilities that women carry for caring for others. The arguments made by the volume as a whole, therefore, are both original and groundbreaking. The book is written from a feminist perspective and integrates race and class as well as gender.
Book Description
In this fresh look at the science of complexity, a biologist and a computer scientist discuss this profound new field of knowledge, using examples from starfish to traveling salesmen, from car crashes to the workings of the brain.
Customer Reviews:
Rather frustrating book, needs to go deeper.......2005-06-29
What a frustrating book - it never seems to get to the point!
I can't understand why the authors feel it's okay to write at such a high level about chaos and complexity, without delving into their subject in any depth. For example, they open with the contribution of Alan Turing and his Turing machine but they don't give enough detail for you to appreciate why this is important. Sadly this happens again and again in this book. I was often left thinking, "What is the significance of this?" as they skipped from one idea to the next in a disjointed manner. They tend to introduce an idea or individual contributor, mention too briefly what they did and then move on.
It's a bit like reading lots of road signs on the freeway at speed: you can't really claim you've visited those places or know what they're about.
The title of the book suggests a much stronger link to computing than is actually achieved. They use a few computing terms (which they don't define) and despite using the term 'algorithm' they don't actually explain many of these.
I felt the authors weren't in touch with their audience. It's quite possible to write a fascinating book that deals with a technical subject despite your audience not have a technical background (e.g. try "Fermat's Last Theorem" by Simon Singh). By contrast, "Patterns in the Sand" avoids depth in its explanations, almost as if to 'spare' its readers, which instead produces a sense of annoyance.
I'm sure their purpose was to introduce the emerging field of chaos and complexity, but in the end I was unconvinced. I will look elsewhere to get more depth and a better read - I was glad to finish this book so I could move onto something else!
The graphics in the book are rather sparse and of poor quality.
I give this book one star because it did remind me about StarLogo, a tool for playing with parallel worlds, and also FRACTINT, a fractal generator. Both are available on the internet.
Product Description
If you have spent too much of your life suffering through cycles of despair, unsatisfying relationships, depression, loneliness, distrust, emptiness, and power struggles, then this book is for you. It is your first step in your journey toward an integral life, toward discovering the inner workings of your own cycles of the heart.

Book Description
`Everyday life' has a more profound effect on our political behaviour than we may at first think. Peterson explores how certain personal variables can affect political behaviour: stress, health, anxiety about death and sexual abuse and then goes on to place these in the wider but just as influential context of family, religion, employment and the media. This is an important study for anyone interested in political science, psychology and sociology.

Customer Reviews:
Rich and resonant.......2002-05-14
Somehow this book simultaneously gave me focus and set my mind to wandering. What more could one ask? Rhythms and Cycles' dialogue of opposites (sound and silence, solitude and community, for example) seems an invitation to draw on memory, to think about meaning. Nancy Bruning is conversational, engaging, generous, and even gently witty. Her exploration of patterns in everyday life in different cultures, different religions, offers lots of information; just as important, it encourages you to reflect on your past and present, on identities and contexts. It fills gaps and connects pieces of what you know. It's a fast and easy read, that you want to take slowly, to interrupt with your own reflections and insights. I'm giving it to several friends.
The sacred and the common: a balance.......2001-10-26
Nancy Bruning's newest book "Rhythms and Cycles: Sacred Patterns in Everyday Life is filled with a warm, rich and comforting perspective.
She examines various religious practices for their common threads of traditions, songs and expression. She points out the great and often overlooked value of rhythmic repetition of even the smallest act, such as singing or humming at any time. Or lighting a candle to rememeber an event or a person.
What Ms. Bruning does so well is to bring back the sacred to our everyday life by reminding us to pay even the scantest attention to a ritual. One need not attend a typical place of worship, but rather one can worship anywhere and regain strength and uplift.
In these trying days of all the world's tragic actions, we need to focus energy toward keeping the spirit of life in our hearts. This book goes a long way to making connections in the heart through study, music, and extention of a helping hand.
Read this book, it's very good for you!
Why can't we all get along???.......2001-10-17
This book traces ancient rituals, as they have been adapted to modern religious practices. Primary focus is upon Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Hinduism, Buddhism and others are also examined.
Common day-to-day activities that seem non-secular are explored and shown to have religious roots. Conversely, this book explains that many religious practices are simply modified celebrations dealing with the cycles of nature. I liked how Nancy Bruning wrote about this in a very open, non-judgmental way.
I liked the image that common threads relating to natural cycles show up in the cloth of distinctly different faiths. I wish that the extreme fundamentalist believers in any faith could read "Rhythms and Cycles" and realize that perhaps there is only one God, a God that wouldn't be pleased with the notion of killing or dying.
This is very timely given the recent WTC tragedy. For me, a chilling sentence on page 211 summed up the mindset of the hijackers: "Martyrs of Islam have their evil deeds completely erased and they are sent to the Garden immediately."

Just OK.......2005-07-08
The author seems to be writing from Tennesee. Many pictures are from the Winter months with snow on the ground. Some pictures look quite a bit different than the ones in my backyard in an area below Atlanta. Just okay as a birding book. "Birds of North America" (Golden) is a better choice.
Wonderful resource for GA birdwatchers.......2000-04-18
This book is an excellent resource for the Georgia bird enthusiast. It is perfect for identifying the birds we sometimes tend to overlook...the ones in our own back yards! I absolutely recommend this guide.
