Taking Complexity Seriously applies the advanced policy analysis technique of triangulation to what is now the world's most complex public policy challenge: sustainable development.
One central problem of public policy analysis has been to find new ways of analyzing issues of increasing complexity and uncertainty. Triangulation is perhaps the best example of these novel techniques, as it uses various methods, databases, theories, and approaches to converge on what to do about the complex issue in question.
Taking Complexity Seriously uses four different theoretical approaches (Girardian economics, cultural theory, critical theory, and the local justice framework) to triangulation in order to converge on answers to four major policy questions:

What is sustainable development?
Why is it an issue?
What needs to be done?
What can actually be done?

These four approaches are used to analyze the sustainable development controversy that recently arose in the pages of Science magazine and the journal Ecological Applications. These different approaches prove highly potent in defamiliarizing conventional wisdom about sustainable development. Ultimately the different approaches will converge on novel answers to the four questions. The practical implications of these conclusions are drawn out at the end of Taking Complexity Seriously in a detailed case study of ecosystem management.

In the early postwar years, the Philippines seemed poised for long-term economic success; within the region, only Japan had a higher standard of living. By the early 1990s, however, the country was dismissed as a perennial aspirant to the ranks of newly industrializing economies, unable to convert its substantial developmental assets into developmental success. Major reforms of the mid-1990s bring new hope, explains Paul D. Hutchcroft, but accompanying economic gains remain relatively modest and short-lived.

What has gone wrong? The Philippines should have all the ingredients for developmental success: tremendous entrepreneurial talents; a well-educated and anglophone workforce; a rich endowment of natural resources; a vibrant community of economists and development specialists; and abundant overseas assistance. Hutchcroft attributes the laggard economic performance to long-standing deficiencies in the Philippine political sphere. The country's experience, he asserts, illuminates the relationship between political and economic development in the modern Third World. Through careful examination of interactions between the state and the major families of the oligarchy in the banking sector since 1960, Hutchcroft shows the political obstacles to Philippine development.

"Booty capitalism," he explains, emerged from relations between a patrimonial state and a predatory oligarchy. Hutchcroft concludes by examining the capacity of recent reform efforts to encourage transformation toward a political, economic order more responsive to the developmental needs of the Philippine nation as a whole.

A strong indictment of the perils of pervasive rent-seeking behavior by entrenched economic elites, "Booty Capitalism" is a highly readable exposition regarding the evident inertia of the Philippine economy. Full of salacious details about Marcos cronies, central bank governors and business tycoons, Hutchcroft's book is nonetheless a somber, deeply insightful historical work focusing on the Philippine banking system, and how that system remains instrumental in maintaining a decayed political and economic structure.

This might be the best introduction to social studies that elementary schools can get. It is a colurful, interesting book with young characters who will introduce your students to all kinds of walls and cultures around the world. An absolute must for the classroom because of its information, an absolute must for home because of its beauty and value in a home-education without too much school-like text.

Talking Walls.......1999-12-09

This is an excellent book for children of all ages. Fantastic if you are looking for a multicultural book for your child or classroom. I have in fact found several sites on the internet ( one of the sites is that of the publisher Tillbury House)which give address and phone numbers for hundreds of lessonplans for teachers. A book that no elementary classroom should be without. There is actually a sequel call "Talking Walls:The Stories Continue" which I have not gotton my hands on yet.

Most sequels, in any media, do not live up to their predecessors. This is not the case for this beautiful sequel to the wonderfully crafted children's book by Margy Burns Knight. The author has obviously researched exensively over the walls that she presents in both volumes and yet she presents such complex histories in understandable ways for your children, then offering a more technical, academic compendium for students with more interest. A wonderful way to start a social studies unit with an item that every child living everywhere can relate to: walls.

Improve your clinical skills with a pleasant read........2000-11-24

The "Self-Assessment Color Review" collection is very nice and I can recommend the avian one. In my opinion, this book is not intended to give you a profound and detailed picture of the diseases but it more or less tries to confront you with real-life situations. Excellent for students or clinicians who want to deepen or broaden their interest.
