Pugh's book is really a comic book exposition of Keynes the man and his life.Many of the pictures will hold the interest of the above average grammer school student.It presents a chronological history of Keynes from his birth to his death,fitting in details on Keynes's father,mother,brother,sister,friends,associates,economic ideas, and accomplishments along the way.The story is told in comic book style .One criticism of the book is the discussion of Keynes's "homosexuality"(Keynes up until 1922-23 would be more accurately categorized as gay-bisexual)on pp.24-25 and the summary contained on the backcover of the book.Pugh claims that Keynes was "...an open homosexual who later married a ballerina".There are two errors contained in this statement.First,Keynes was not open about his sexual practices with the general public.He was only open with his circle of close friends,the Bloomsbury group.Second,by the time Keynes married Lydia Lopokova,it was clear that he was straight and not gay.This conclusion is easily arrived at by anyone who has read the letters of correspondence between Keynes and Lopokova.

A Very Good Introduction to Keynes Economics.......2004-04-14

The great British economist John Maynard Keynes solved the riddle of the Great Depression - why the economy would not self-correct itself. Contrary to the false teachings of the extreme laissez-faire economists, severe instability in the economy had been witnessed for centuries and could never be explained or properly controlled.

The Great Depression brought this issue to the forefront. Keynes had previously distinguished himself as a considerable economist. Then his General Theory ushered in the era of modern macroeconomics. Severe economics instability has never returned.

Being a fan of both battles I felt I owed it to myself to finally read this book. I was skeptical at first, although I was after the opinion and personal insight from Doubleday. I was disappointed after several pages to see that what I was reading was more so a quick history or study of the battles instead of insight from Doubleday himself. Now, at times Doubleday did offer his opinion or toughts about a particular movement or fight, but rarely did talk about his own personal involvement. This is what I was hoping to read and found myself reading a quick rundown of events concerning these two famous battles. Seldom did Doubleday offer what he was thinking or desired to explain his reasons for his actions. Doubleday is vague at times and skips key elements occasionally to make this book appear quite short of information. For anyone looking to understand the battles, I suggest authors like Stephen Sears, James McPherson or Harry Pfanz. I can't recommend this book because Doubleday is very brief and at the same time rarely brings in his insight to make this book interesting.

Unexciting but accurate account of two great battles........1999-09-12

I have only read the Gettysburg portion of this book. Abner Doubleday presents a high-level, general's view of the battle, written 20 years later. Movements of large units are described, with very few vignettes of how savage the fighting was. The wounds of his fellow generals are, however, detailed. This book will be difficult for the novice Civil War reader. If you are unfamiliar with the terms regiment, brigade, division, and corps as they were organized in the Civil War, you will probably not appreciate this book. Doubleday does provide detailed, day-by-day order of battle information for both sides in an appendix. Those unfamiliar with the organization of both sides will have to refer to it frequently. There is a detectable bias against Union general Oliver O. Howard, and some antipathy towards General Meade, the overall Union commander, largely because Doubleday was demoted from a battlefield command position he had assumed on the death of his corps commander. Doubleday also provides much less detail after the first day, because only on the first day were his units involved in heavy fighting. If you're looking for an account of the general course of Gettysburg down to the brigade level, this is the book. If you're looking for excitement, you'll have to go elsewhere. It should be noted that there is slim evidence that Abner Doubleday had anything to do with the invention of baseball. However, he did win a Medal of Honor at Gettysburg.

Chancellorsville was a remarkable victory for Robert E. Lee's troops, a fact that had enormous psychological importance for both sides, which had met recently at Fredericksburg and would meet again at Gettysburg in just two months. But the achievement, while stunning, came at an enormous cost: more than 13,000 Confederates became casualties, including Stonewall Jackson, who was wounded by friendly fire and died several days later.

The topics covered in this volume include the influence of politics on the Union army, the importance of courage among officers, the impact of the war on children, and the state of battlefield medical care. Other essays illuminate the important but overlooked role of Confederate commander Jubal Early, reassess the professionalism of the Union cavalry, investigate the incident of friendly fire that took Stonewall Jackson's life, and analyze the military and political background of Confederate colonel Emory Best's court-martial on charges of abandoning his men.

Krick's Contribution Alone Makes This Book Invaluable.......2005-09-30

Although I haven't read all of this book, the contribution of Robert Krick, entitled "The Smoothbore Volley that Doomed the Confederacy" is such that it alone, at least to me, makes this an invalualbe book for students of both Jackson and Chancellorsville. For anyone who has been fascinated with the precise reconstruction of a historical event taking place at a defined place, Krick's writing will prove fascinating. No biography of Jackson that I have encountered, even Robertson's, provides as much detail on the circumstances surrounding this tragic occurence. As he points out and is generally known, the monument at Chancellorsville which purports to mark the spot where Jackson was shot on that May, 1863 moonless night is incorreclty placed. Read and take this book with you when visiting the area as the map included will prove of great help.
