4 out of 5 stars Interesting Analysis into Our Modern World.......2002-12-09

Overstretched, Resource-Scarce, Unregulated. Los Angeles and other world cities are increasingly walking a tightrope that becomes harder to balance on. This book carefully outlines how cities got to this untenable situation and looks at examples of how different communities are combating these problems with mixed results. A read for anyone interested in urban politics, involved in the real estate business, or studying urban and regional planning

In Buddha: The Living Way, photographer deForest W. Trimingham takes you to the Buddhist centers of Asia. As though unrolling a scroll of photographs, you begin with vast landscapes and spires piercing clouds, then gradually move into an array of temple interiors, on to Buddhist sculptures and paintings, a panoply of trumpets and drums and such, and finally to practitioners in full regalia, including Westerners. Pico Iyer's introduction could just be the best 10-page capsule of Buddhism in print. --Brian Bruya

                    Book Description

"Since Buddhism is a part of daily life for most of its adherents, it is, willy-nilly, entangled in the world, as a lotus grows out of mud," Pico Iyer writes in the essay that accompanies deForest W. Trimingham's remarkable
photographs of the places where Buddhism is practiced today. Trimingham traveled to remote regions of Tibet, where tattered prayer flags hang tangled on crude poles in lonely Himalayan mountain passes, as well as to a Shambhala center in Colorado, where American Buddhists practice Zen archery. He has visited some of the most beautiful places in the world--the temple compound of Pagan in Burma, ninth-century shrines in Java, a meditation garden near Kyoto. His photographs capture the essence of Buddhist life in all its diversity, "in part," Pico Iyer writes, "because they are so inescapably human, even with their lyricism, and in part because so many of them spin like a mandala with all the whirling energies of Buddhist devotion, its reds and golds, its glowing statues, its ornately carved doorways that seem to open onto a world of candles and sutras and scroll paintings teeming with forces both wrathful and benign."

The book was conceived to be read like a Buddhist scroll. But even if the reader starts in the middle or at some completely arbitrary point, he will get a sense of the serene heart of Buddhism--om, the universal hum of all and nothing.

                    5 out of 5 stars Dharmic Masterpiece.......2006-04-21

This book is a dharmic masterpiece and a brilliant exposition of the universal truths expounded since time immemorial. The sagacious and infinitely precious words of the eternal spiritual star, Gautama Buddha, are delicately and poignantly brought home again as it crosses through the illusory barriers of time and space through the pen of the Venerable Rahula Basnagoda. The relevance of this work to our contemporary world is the gift supreme that Sage Basnagoda is gifting to the world at large. For anyone interested in deepening the quest for inner peace and awakening, this book is a must. I consider it a treasure beyond measure.

                    Blessings Supreme,

                        Book Description

With contributions from a wide array of economists, ecologists, and government agency professionals, Economics and Ecological Risk Assessment: Applications to Watershed Management provides a multidisciplinary approach to environmental decision-making at a watershed level. It introduces the fields of ecological risk assessment (ERA) and economic analysis and discusses their application to the practice of watershed management. The book presents a general framework for the integration of ERA and economic analysis to improve environmental management in a diversity of watersheds. Focusing on real-world decisions, this book describes studies conducted in six U.S. watersheds where both ecological and economic analyses were needed. Decision contexts for these studies include negotiations to satisfy Endangered Species Act requirements, natural resource damage assessment, Clean Water Act permitting, and community development planning. The success of ecological-economic integration in each study, and the contribution to decision making, is critically examined.

2 out of 5 stars A thin book with not much to say.......2001-04-23

Wilson Learning Corp.'s book about Swedish customs and culture is a start in the right direction, but unfortunately it is only a start. There are several good points brought up which may help the non-Swede avoid making a serious fool of himself or herself at a business luncheon, but that's about all there is. It's not really a book -- just a very thin pamphlet -- and it brings up only about a dozen points total, most of which anyone going to Sweden will already know. All of its points are related to business and business people, with nothing of interest for average people, tourists, motorists, hikers, or job-seekers, and nothing for people who simply want to meet and understand Swedes as people and friends. Sorry, it's not worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Protocol, Advice, and a Reasonable Price.......1999-12-15

Of all the "cross-cultural" business books I've seen, none of them distill the information I really need to know about a culture into about 10 readable pages, as this "Wonderworks" booklet does. You can easily read it while waiting for your flight and review it before you land.

The information stays fresh because 1) it's concise and 2) it's relevant. You will actually USE this information in a business meeting, or in any social gathering. And it's obvious that the information is grounded in up-to-date research.

Particularly useful is a graph that shows which cultures are more "task-directed," like mine, and more "people-directed," like Sweden's. This knowledge has saved me from getting down to business too abruptly and jeopardizing crucial relationships. Then the booklet covers the specific protocols you will need to know in most any given situation.

One last thing. I've been frustrated with other books on cross-culture relationships that seem to add a lot of filler, so they can be sold as expensive books. This "Wonderworks" booklet gives you exactly what you need for a successful meeting and offers an appropriate price.

After reading this book, I found it to have some good ideas, but it was too specific. I thought the author was just writing a book to promote his catalog because, unlike other catalog books, he used examples from HIS catalog. While the page with the Highland attire was a good example, all of the pages from his catalog just became overkill. It would have been much better had to also used examples from a variety of catalogs.

Our business is thinking about producing a catalog. We purchased several catalog books. "The Catalog Handbook" was great. He walks you step by step in how and why he designed his catalog--even some of his mistakes. Just reading it, I got some great ideas on how to create our catalog. This is for the first-timer and small business cataloger.

                              Book Description

Set in 1992 at the outbreak of the war in Yugoslavia, the author, a Croatian writer and editor for Sarajevo Television keeps a diary of the extraordinary events as they unfold around him. The book details the author's diary entries, in which he describes not only the horrifying war; the looting, stealing, and betrayal that became commonplace, but also the mental strain of war on the individual. This diary was written under permanent fear of discovery and was smuggled out from Pale to the Hungarian border at the risk of torture and reprisals.

4 out of 5 stars Exceptionally truthful and detailed work describing horrible life under Serb-Montenegrian agression in Bosnia.......2007-01-11

When I first read this book, I was surprized with the brutal, criticizning honesty and undeniable sense of honor of this Bosnian Serb author, who has been the first among Serbs to question the madness thy were led into and who has been the first to reveal the collective paranoia Bosnian Serbs had worked themselves into, under the guiding hand of Serbia's butcher - Milosevic and his stooges, Karadzic and Mladic and all others who aided and abetted them.
This book alone convinced me that there were and there are still people of honor among those Bosnians who are today fashionably labeled as Bosnian Serbs. Although, as Vuksanovic's book had proven, they have had very limited space and freedom to act and to prevent the horrible events that were to befall their non-Serb neighbours - as it was the case with all other Bosnians who had Serb and Montenegrian guns pointed to their faces.
But instead of choosing or allowing himself of his son to become just one among the numerous Serbia's willing executioners - he has chosen to leave and to testify against the creators of the Bosnian genocide - those occupaying the Pale, former Bosnian sleepy hollow in the outskirts of Sarajevo.
He gave us excellent work on human psychological transformation - demonstrating through still living examples how some Serbs had become the psychopats and sociopats who ravaged and violated the Bosnia.
The unacceptable conversion from ordinary Bosnian citizens into the butchers of Bosnia is vividly illustrated through the Pale narration of the author, all the while he was struggling to preserve his own sanity and life in the capital of war maddness, smuggling, pillage and rape of Bosnia.
Almost clinical in its essence, the evidence he gives about the complicity and assistance from Serbia's military and government is undeniable piece of history, which has transcended the author's life and language.
I recommend everyone to read this book, as it is so far the only well-written literary work on Bosnian Serbs and Serb-Montenegiran agressors who aided them, not colored with the Serb nationalistic fervor, derogatory language against non-Serbs of Balkans, prejudice or religion. It should be a "must-have" for anybody inteerested in the history - as it is essentially a documentary of a specific time and place - and beginning of the occupation of Bosnia-Herzegovina and slautherhouse this beautifull Balkan contry was reduced to.

                                  Book Description

This outstanding work is the only modern book devoted to the chick embryo and has been an essential resource for geneticists, molecular and developmental biologists, and other life scientists who use the chick embryo as their research model. This new enlarged and updated second edition is published in response to continuing demand. The text provides a detailed description of development, from fertilization to hatching, with emphasis on the earlier stages though also covering individual organ systems in detail. There are reviews of the more recent molecular research and a new section highlighting the important landmarks in the history of chick embryology which have had an impact on our understanding of developmental processes. The book is beautifully illustrated with 74 text-figures and over 500 photographs, including nearly 200 new scanning electron micrographs.

                                  New to This Edition:
                                  * Updated and expanded text to accompany diagrams
                                  * More than 200 new labelled scanning electron micrographs showing individual tissues in great detail
