The Charged Void: Urbanism is the companion volume to The Charged Void: Architecture; the two together comprise the complete works of Alison and Peter Smithson. For the designers, architecture and urbanism were inseparable: buildings encapsulate urban ideas; urban systems are the means by which buildings function effectively. This second book collects both urban and architectural designs that have specific implications for city form into fifteen thematic chapters: the Team X Doorn Manifesto with its worked examples (Close Houses, Fold Houses, Terraced Crescent Houses); large-scale designs such as the Berlin Hauptstadt, Hamburg Steilshoop, and the Kuwait Urban Form Study; and built manifestations of urban ideas, notably the Economist Building of 1959-64. More than a collection of work, The Charged Void: Urbanism represents a record of a focused thought process concerned with the qualities of urban life--a thoughtful and witty collection of observations, decipherings, and reccomendations for understanding and improving the complex nature of the city.

Mark Linley's views on positive thinking are good,but as for the sketches I didn't learn much more than I do just by teaching myself.It's very average in that there isn't that much to learn.And no way am I grabbing an egg and sticking plasticine nose and eyes on it.Bye!!

There is no doubt that George Gilder is bright nor is there any argument that he writes and speaks persuasively. The problem with this book is the fact that almost everything Mr. Gilder has predicted has failed to arrive in anywhere near the magnitude or time that he so boldly predicted. As someone who worked with him once said, "He's often wrong and never in doubt". This book will go down with the "New, New Thing" as interesting reading, but faulty prognostication. Better to pick up a few copies of Red Herring, Fortune...
A Virtual Quotation Book of George Gilder!.......2000-12-06
To the pure George Gilder fan I'm sure this is a 5 star. My slight downgrade is because I come the investor's side of what George Gilder has to say. While this book is only 2 years old, it's value as an investment book has been decreased by time. I would have liked a little more on Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, Scott McNealey, Steve Jobs and all the characters who are the cutting-edge of the high-tech business. Since George Gilder did not write this book or even add a comment to the Introduction, he can't be blamed in any way. The editor's choice of material is spread a little longer and thinner than I'd like. Maybe 4 1/2 stars is a better all-around rating, but for the investor only a 4 I'm sorry to say. Things just happen too fast.
A must read for those just getting to know George Gilder........1999-07-04
George Gilder is well known today for his examination of emerging technologies. His is an interesting journey from writing about values, men and women, government policy, etc. to sharing his understanding of emerging technologies. This book is not a straight line from Mr. Gilder's early career to the present, but it serves as a great introduction to a tireless mind. In the end, you will understand how a man with a diverse background ends up writing about creating wealth through giving.

It is filled with succinct quotations which get to the heart of many topics. The introduction alone, by Bruce Chapman, is worth the price of admission. Fate matched George and Bruce as college roommates. In marvelous anecdotes, Bruce reveals some very human Gilderian habits, mannerisms and foibles.
Awesome. Earth shaking........1999-03-05
I have read Gilder's news letters, The Death of Television, and one or two other titles. I enjoyed this book even more as Gilder's prodigious intelligence is more intelligible in spoken form. Its great to find a truly great thinker who appreciates the dynamism of markets and creativity, and who understands the profound impacts of quantum theory on the human condition, and finally who can be persuasive that no apologies are necessary for capitalism. He's a great breath of fresh air and the inclusion of his ideas in the Papal reports that come each century are demonstrative of their transcendent importance. I think Gilder will go down in history as one of the great minds of our time.

This book is about using both sides of your brain in a synergistic fashion. The book teaches you about using "learning maps" to improve the learning process by using your visual skills and imagination. There is also a brief overview of memory techniques.
The book is very easy to read. It is fairly small, concise and covers the topic in a no-nonsense manner. The book contains useful tips, examples and practical applications of the tools described. Note that these "learning maps" are identical to the mind maps promoted by Tony Buzan... Although the book is a good introductory text, I found the treatment rather shallow I would have preferred a book with more detail.
If you're completely new to the concept of mind mapping and memory techniques, this book could server as a good primer. Else, have a look at the books of Tony Buzan they're much more worthwhile.

No body of water was more vital to the Confederacys efforts in the Civil War than the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Though the Confederate Congress declared the Mississippi free and open to all states north and south, the Union launched plans for an effective blockade of the 1700 miles of Southern coastline, coupled with a strong naval and army thrust down the Mississippi Valley from Cairo, Illinois, to the Gulf of Mexico. To defend the river and to prevent Union forces from advancing, the South would require a strong naval force. There was only one problem with the strategy: The Confederacy had no navy. On February 25, 1861, Confederate president Jefferson Davis nominated Stephen R. Mallory to be secretary of the newly formed Confederate States Navy. Mallory faced significant obstaclesno shipyards, few skilled craftsmen and machinists, and a lack of production facilities to process raw materials. Mallory was able to overcome the many shortcomings to build a formidable navy, but the efforts in the Mississippi theater were hamstrung by a disjointed command structure and interservice bickering. Despite these problems, the Confederate Navy contested the Union forces at every turn. The history of Confederate naval forces on the western waters is a story of desperation, intrigue, ineptitude, and humiliating defeats, interspersed with moments of courage, innovation, resourcefulness, and a few hard-earned victories.
