Visions: Contempoary Male Photography.......2007-05-08
The book has some great photographs all with a good quality for both the execution and the print. Still not up to the 5 stars of any of Paul Freemans books. Bondi Work, Bondi Classic etc but still very enjoyable and well worth the money.
If this is Contemporary Male Photography..........2007-05-03
...we're in trouble! The selection of artists covers the highly salable 20% art/80% pornography ratio. It also illuminates just how derivative contemporary male photography is. Buy a book of Mapplethorpe, Pierre et Gilles, Mark Morrisroe and get the real deal. Or make a donation to an art school. On the upside, the book is well produced and shows artists from a range of countries.
A Bold and Beautiful Collection.......2007-03-21
Bruno Gmünder Verlag Gmbh is a highly regarded publisher of photographic essays, taking more risks than most other production facilities in this country. This very impressive book surveys contemporary photographers whose works emphasize the male nude and contains sixty seven artists from the well known to the emerging and the result is a hefty volume of both black and white and full color images that offers as wide a spectrum of 'visions' as any book to date.
After a Foreword by the always readable and well-informed David Leddick, the book unfolds in sections based solely on the individual photographers fortunate enough to be included in this panorama. The pleasure of this particular book on the male nude is the variety: images range from the hilarious costumed fantasies, to the brutally erotic, to the quietly sensual, to the 'model look', to the beefcake stance. Included in the collection are the very well known photographers Tom Bianchi, Kristen Bjorn, Ed Freeman, Steven Underhill and Kingdom 19 and the works selected form their large repertoires are fine choices indeed.
But it is the pleasure of meeting new ideas from lesser-known photographers that is encouraging: David Vance, Joe Ziolkowski, Roger Nguyen, Troy Phillips are but a few. The artists are from around the world and for those of us familiar with the works of such photographers as Adam Raphael, Norm Yip, Eric Olson, and John Sonsini among others seem like a much-missed exclusion. But not every artist can be included in a volume even of this scope, and the book stands as a first class collection of the many ways the male nude can be celebrated. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, March 07
Pretty sweet.......2007-03-17
The images are pretty sweet. My first male photography book. My friends and I enjoyed checkin' it out. It has quite a few different styles and techniques which my friends and I really liked. Since I'm into photography as well, it gave me some ideas of new ways to shoot.
The Bruno Gmunder Vision.......2007-01-23
In his preface to this quite amazing book Claus Kiessling says that this is the first anthology "coming from the house of Bruno Gmunder, a unique project uniting a variety of styles." David Leddick, well-known and respected for his several collections of male nude photography, also has written a short preface. There are well over 300 photographs included here by sixty-seven artists (in alphabetical order) from around the world-- Germany, the U. S., Canada, Spain, Russia, France, England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Lebanon and Thailand. Some of the photographers are well-known, having published books or been anthologized before-- Tom Bianchi, Kristen Bjorn, Seva Galkin (in a recent edition of "Blue" magazine), Christopher Makos, Joe Oppedisano, Jeff Palmer, Howard Roffman, James Spada, Steven Underwood, David Vance, Carlos Quiroz, Kingdome 19-- and probably others of whom I'm not familiar. The pages are not numbered and the artists are listed by residence, e-mail address and sometimes their date of birth. A few of the photographs are named in the photo index included at the end of the collection. What the editors have done admirably here is to let the photographs speak for themselves; and they do, loud and clear.
There is an embarrassment of riches here and certainly something for everyone regardless of your interest or fetish. The photographs are in color, in black and white, in focus, out of focus, sharp and grainy. Some of the men are shot in classic poses, other have props running the gamut from masks to ropes, leather, lingerie and designer underwear of course. There are skinheads, an amputee, and men of different races.
Some of my favorite photographs in no particular order are Kristen Bjorn's shot of two nude men standing overlooking Rio de Janiero (I believe), Christopher Makos' six beautiful head shots, Monopoly's erotic "Colt rehearsal," Bruce LaBruce's humorous set-- particularly "Black Sheep," Aaron Cobbett's stylized sailor shot, Jay Diers' "Ty 1" for the beautiful side lighting, Matthias Herrmann for the guts to do those outrageous self-portraits, Matthias Kort for the wonderfully lit "Uwe," Joan Crisol's work, Mark Lynch's "Paul-The Old Warehouse, 1999" for obvious reasons, and the first photograph by Kelly Mink for its great composition. Finally the four photos of Carlos Quiroz-- is he influenced by Edward Weston?-- "Nude LVI," "Nude LXXXI," "Nude LXXXVI" and "Horse" are original beyond description. At first, I was totally convinced I was seeing a rose in the second photograph!
Someone will have to work long and hard to publish a collection of male nude photography better than this beautifully reproduced and printed book.

Book Description
While nude women are a staple of commercial and art photography, the photographed male nude is often the target of censorship but seldom the subject of serious critical discussion. This is the first study to examine the unique interrelation between social perceptions of the nude and the medium of photography. Melody Davis focuses on the work of six artists whose photography confronts societal prohibitions. In order to understand the taboo and silence which surrounds this subject, she addresses the many social and cultural fears that inhibit the presentation and discussion of photographed male nudity. Because she deals with distinctions between the nude and the naked, the interrelational and the pornographic, the book has close connections with current debates about the impact of images and the limits of public tolerance of images of "deviance."
Through the photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe, Lucas Samaras, John Coplans, George Dureau, Joel-Peter Witkin, and a film by Dusan Makavejev, the author examines how the action ideal for the male body is challenged by an artistic medium in which man becomes the spectacle, not the spectator. By presenting three of photography's genresself-portraiture, portraits of others, and allegorical nudesDavis is able to reveal the critical and theoretical issues which shape our understanding of photographed nudity, and, by extension, representations of gender.

About Male nude.......2000-04-15
Recently most of male nude books are not so aesthetical. There are few beautiful and sensual pictures nowadays. But if you are interested in the contemporary male photographies, I recommend to read this book. You will find something about the key.

Book Description
Northeast Asia is set to witness a rapid expansion of natural gas use in the next few decades owing to increasing demand for power generation, and growing environmental concerns over the use of coal. China, in particular, is developing its policy of gas use, both liquefied natural gas and pipeline supplies. This will significantly affect both Japanese and Korean patterns of gas trade within the next ten years, and will make a circular pipeline connecting the Russian Far East, Japan, the Korean peninsula, and China a realistic possibility.
This unique study provides a comprehensive overview of these changing patterns, and their implications for the region as a whole.

Book Description
The North American Free Trade Agreement binds Canada, Mexico, and the United States together in an ambitious and far-reaching experiment in regional economic integration. As we enter the new millennium, a central concern is whether NAFTA should be amended or reformed and how it might become the foundation for a hemispheric Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). To assess these possibilities, NAFTA in the New Millennium raises key questions: How has NAFTA performed and how has it affected the member countries? Is there popular support for NAFTA in Canada, Mexico, and the United States? What are the prospects for change in the foreseeable future and for the longer term? How does NAFTA fit into the still-evolving world economy? What is its relationship to other regional integration schemes and to multilateral connections on a global scale? Prominent contributors from Canada, Mexico, and the United States examine broad dimensions of NAFTA's history, politics, economics, and outlooks for future development. They address such topics as: The rise of "free trade" as an idea Occupational status and perceptions of NAFTA Immigration policy and economic integration The need for a social development fund Prospects for dollarization The impact of 9/11/01 on regional and hemispheric trade negotiations. We acknowledge the contributions of the Western Centre for Economic Research and Government of Alberta Department of International and Intergovernmental Relations.

Cuba Ends Segregation.......2006-10-08
This is a captivating book and must reading for progressive-minded people everywhere. Pre-revolutionary Cuba was a place of discrimination and segregation against Blacks similar to the U.S. South or South Africa's Apartheid. Dreke grew up in one of the more backward areas-- much like Mississippi, the state where I was born.
Fresh from having defeated the U.S.- backed Batista regime, the rebel army took down the rope separating Blacks and whites at a celebratory dance. Dreke, an Afro-Cuban, relates how Cuba's revolutionary government policy was to take down all the ropes of oppression and keep them down in Cuba and to help others internationally do the same.
You can buy this book from "booksfrompathfinder" by clicking "Used and New" at the top of this page.
First-hand testimony of the end of the Batista dictatorship.......2002-05-16
Written by a soldier who fought in the Cuban revolution, Victor Dreke's From The Escambray To The Congo is a personal memoir and first-hand testimony of the end of the Batista dictatorship and the attempts to create a better government in its place. An insert of black-and-white photographs adds a visual touch to the gripping experiences both on and off the battlefield described in this memorable, gut-wrenching, up close and personal account of the modern history of a nation. From The Escambray To The Congo is a welcome and much appreciated addition to the growing library of personal memoirs and eye-witness accounts of the Cuban Revolution and its aftermath.
A lesson on how to bring down racism.......2002-03-30
In New Zealand, politicians, government agencies, and many businesses like to crow about how much they oppose discrimination of any kind. However, most working people who come up against racist practices know there is big gap between what these institutions say and do when it comes to dealing with instances of racism.
"From the Escambray to the Congo" is a powerfully account of how after the 1959 victory of Fidel Castro's 26 July movement over the Batista dictatorship in Cuba, the new revolutionary government set out close to gap between the word and the deed.
How the Cuban government went about eradicating Jim Crow type racism, is told through the words of Victor Dreke, a leading participant of Cuba's revolutionary movement for half a century. The capitalist foundations that propped up racism in Cuba collapsed under the weight of the hundreds of thousand workers, peasants and young people - both black and white - coming to the realisation that racism was incompatible with the new society they were fighting to transform.
As a young teenager Dreke was advised by his father to "Study and get an education and don't mess with strikes or any of that; it won't get you anywhere. Besides, that stuff's not for blacks." Fortunately Dreke did not follow his fathers advice and threw himself into revolutionary activity. Beginning as a high school activist, then Rebel Army fighter. He was a commander in the fight to root out the counterrevolutionary bands operating in central Cuba and has been an internationalist combatant and representative of the Cuban revolution in Africa.
What comes across strongly for me is how the Cuba's determination to end racism in it's own country was inextricably linked to the liberation of the Africa continent from imperialist exploitation
For the millions of young Victor Dreke's - male or female - in the mines, factories and on the high school and university campuses around the world - this book is for you.
A Living Revolution.......2002-03-19
Read this small book for a series of snapshots of what it was like to be a participant in the Cuban revolution that triumphed in January 1959. From a high school activist under the Batista dictatorship, Victor Dreke joined the Rebel Army and fought in many campaigns. The Escambray mountains in central Cuba were the scene of a bloody five-year-long attempt by Washington-organized groups to undermine the new regime. Like the Contras in Nicaragua 20 years later, these 'Bandidos' murdered literacy volunteers, health workers, and peasants who backed the revolutionary government. Dreke was a leader in the military and militia campaigns that wiped them out. His description of the Cuban mid-1960s contingent to aid revolutionary fighters in the Congo complements Che Guevara's own recently published account of this. Dreke notes how the Congo campaign, though not a success at the time, paved the way for critically important Cuban efforts to aid African liberation struggles, such as the decisive victory at Cuito Cuanavale, Angola, against South African forces in 1988. As with all Pathfinder titles, the well-thought-out maps, footnotes and glossary in this book help the reader with unfamiliar names and events. Numerous photos bring Dreke's story even more to life.
from such material revolutionaries are made.......2002-03-18
What is striking about Victor Dreke's story is not what is different about the man, but how similar the youth was to so many others in his day and in ours. It also shows the kind of person who is made by, and makes, a great revolution.
Dreke was a Afro-Cuban teenager of the 1950s who did not know that you can't fight city hall -- or in his case, the presidential palace. He joined the battle against the vicious and corrupt Batista dictatorship, and the social and economic system it defended. In doing so, he joined the struggle of sugar refinery workers and met the militants of Fidel Castro's Rebel Army. He stuck with the struggle for the long term, taking leadership responsibilities in everything from the fight against counter-revolutionary gangs, organized and directed by the U.S. government, to armed combat in the Congo against Mobutu Sese Seko's regime.

gives depth to your appreciation of history.......2006-12-08
This little text is a good accompaniment to the main book, "Making of the West". Here, Lualdi takes the student in a tour of excerpts from original source documents. Translated where necessary from other languages.
So you can see a lengthy essay written on the eve of the French Revolution. Asking, "What is the Third Estate?" This Estate was the impotent assembly that represented the French people, as contrasted to the other Estates that drew from the aristocracy. The essay neatly encapsulates the rising demands of the majority of the people; suggesting why the Revolution occurred.
The book has many other examples. All fitting to give depth to your appreciation of modern history.
