Despite the odd title, which refers to one of the guiding principles of scientific and philosophical inquiry, this is an accessible collection of essays, ideas, and personal experiences. As far as author Bill Jay is concerned, photography encroaches on all aspects of life, and he touches on a wide range of topics. He addresses young photographers in particular, whom he advises that "each photograph you take is like a pebble dropped into the pond of consciousness, its never-ending ripples lapping upon everything." The book is illustrated with Jay's wonderfully inventive montages of Victorian wood engravings, which alone are almost worth the price of the book.

          5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly entertaining.......2006-02-26

I bought this collection of essays for the title and its implications in connecting one of the core intellectual principles of science to photography. Bill Jay succeeds quite will in this endeavor through positive assertions of the value of the artisan and photojournalistic aspects of photography over "Fine Art" photography. However, the criticisms of "criticism" and other pseudo-intellectual posturing, including some very funny send-ups, dominated my reading and enjoyment of the book. A particulary acerbic example from a section of the essay "Madonna Made Me Do It" entitled "Get a Rap" goes as follows:

"Copy down a paragraph (any one will do) from a current critical theorist. Memorize it. Then, in front of the mirror, practice a halting, stumbling delivery with screwed-up face until you can recite it as if ther words were being laboriously dredged up from deep in your psyche with gut-wrenching sincerity."

The book was a joy to read and I recommend it to anyone who likes photography but isn't very fond of the blather that surrounds so much of it. The "woodcut" illustrations were a nice bonus.

3 out of 5 stars A few ideas but much rambling.......2003-01-04

An uneven and loosely connected collection of essays on photography ranging from very instructive (the insight on the cultural context surrounding "The Family of Man" exhibit) to absolutely uninformative (the interview with Diane Arbus where much is made of her reluctance to speak but what is actually discussed after she relaxes & actually gets to talk remains a mystery. Likewise the interview with Bill Brandt where nothing is discussed).

The text is written in a very readable fashion but the style is patronizing and dominated by cliches and commonplace arguments.

In my view, many of the discussions address the concerns of teen-agers interested in becoming photographers. This is perfectly legitimate but it may put off readers who do not fall in this category.

3 stars for the truly informative discussion on Steichen's exhibit and for the lovely illustrations which together justify the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Bill Jay: A Superb and Thoughtful Writer About Photography.......2001-11-24

This book is a companion volume to Bill Jay's book entitled "Cyanide & Spirits: An Inside View of Early Photography" which focuses on 19th century photography. Occam's Razor discusses 20th Century photography in a series of expertly crafted essays on a wide variety of subjects. One essay discusses disturbing images and is especially worthwhile in the aftermath of September 11th. Jay concludes that the "most disturbing subjects threaten our survival as a species." It took a lot of thought to reach this conclusion, which is well supported. I also enjoyed the essays on Diane Arbus, W. Eugene Smith and the explosion of the Hindenberg.

Even if all the essays don't interest you this book is a must read because Jay writes so well and thoughtfully about photography. He is one of a rare breed.

5 out of 5 stars Must reading for anyone who thinks in images........1999-08-09

For forty years I thought there was something wrong with me. I never understood the writing about the subject which is my life's blood. Bill Jay has given me a photographic rebirth. I now know the problem is not my understanding, but the esoteric babble of academic writers. I can not thank Bill Jay in the proper terms. --- Yes I may be able to. I will also pass the word.

5 out of 5 stars A liberating experience for all involved in photography.......1999-08-08

Bill Jay gives everyone permission to think broadly about photography and less about little boxes of categories such as Commercial and Fine Art. He does this with humor and a true love of photography that is contagious. Underscoring his message about clear thinking, his straightforward writing is a model for anyone trying to communicate about art.

These days everybody thinks that to spark deep thought, you need to write a fat tome.

Arthur Okun is more like Thomas Payne. This is a mere pamphlet that is so insightful, so measured, and so thought-provoking, it might just change the way you look at what passes for political discourse in our country forever.

5 out of 5 stars Concise good book for economist, policy maker, and general audience.......2006-02-21

A great short book on the topic of equality and efficiency. I think it is a must read in any college economics, sociology, policy class, and maybe even in advanced high school settings.

I consider it a classic and it is keep alongside Smith, Ricardo, Malthus, and Keynes.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful analysis into government and markets.......2005-07-16

It really is a shame that one apathetic student is dragging the rating of this important book down.

The ideas expressed by Okun here have withstood the test of time and are especially relevant in light of current government policies.

Highly recommended for those who want to deepen their thoughts and broaden their perspectives about the role of markets, government, and how the two relate to one another.

          5 out of 5 stars Very good........2004-07-06

I'm writing this review horrified that this book currently has only 3 stars (hopefully my vote will change that). I care because it is a VERY good book, extremeley and interesting and extremely relevant to the functionality of our society.

I cannot think of many things that are more important to how our society functions than the issues surrounding equality. This is a very readable way to get thinking about this subject or find others writing clearly summarized.

Thinking has developed slightly since this books was written, but the overall ideas still hold. Highly recommended.

Don't be dissuaded from reading this book by someone who read it because they had to. Bad teachers can make anything a miserable experience.

4 out of 5 stars Clear and thought-provoking, despite some dated examples.......2002-02-05

This short book is nearing its thirtieth birthday, and in spots it shows its age. Its many references to U.S. income levels, for example, have to be (roughly) quadrupled to reflect current patterns.
Nonetheless, this is an extremely clear introduction to one of the central political and economic issues of the past century: To what extent should government (and more broadly, society) pursue economic equality? Okun is at his best in pointing out the tradeoffs that both liberals and conservatives must face. Okun argues that with some exceptions, pursuing a great deal of equality will cost society a great deal of efficiency for four reasons: there are fewer incentives for the working rich, fewer incentives for the working poor, less capital investment by the rich, and more administrative costs. On the other hand, singlemindedly pursuing efficiency will cost society a great deal of equality, with the rich getting richer and the poor poorer. Okun clarifies why the tradeoff exists through clever uses of metaphors, most notably his famous "leaks in the (transfer) bucket." Okun ultimately chooses a relatively liberal tradeoff that favors equality, but he always acknowledges the other side's arguments because, like most economists, he respects the powerful efficiency of well-working markets.
Just as interestingly, Okun also discusses cases when we all-- liberal and conservative alike-- may agree to emphasize equality. Voting, trials, and other forms of political life, for example, are areas where we all might wish that government (and its propensity for equality, treating all of us as equal) would prevail over the market (and its propensity for inequality, giving some individuals much more influence than others). Yet often the market prevails in such political areas as well, as we see high-priced lawyers gain advantages in trials, and rich campaign contributors gain advantages in voting and lobbying. In such cases, says Okun, the necessarily unequal market has colonized an area--government-- where equality should be the norm.
One doesn't have to agree with all of Okun's conclusions to find this a thought-provoking and insightful book.

                        Book Description

This book has been written for existing and future entrepreneurs who wish to produce dry foods commercially at small and medium scale. Great effort has been made to use simple language but at the same time to examine all relevant technical aspects.

It starts with examining the basic principles of drying, together with the basic food technology involved.

This is followed by aspects related to markets including advice on carrying out a market survey, and marketing or selling the product both locally, nationally and internationally. On the assumption that a market exists, the publication then examines operational aspects related to the drying of common food groups and advice on establishing production, planning quality assurance and costing the product. The section ends with advice on preparing a business plan.

The final chapter considers the design of a dryer for a given application. This chapter, which involves highly technical calculations, has been simplified so that those who can add, subtract, multiply and divide and calculate percentages will be able to design a dryer for any application. It is mainly aimed at engineers who need to be able to know how to design a dryer.

Case studies are included together with an example of a business plan

                              Book Description

This unique encyclopedia provides detailed entries for everything you ever wanted to know about D-Day, the invasion of Normandy. Organized alpha-betically, the entries give detailed descriptions of weapons, equipment, divisions, air and naval units, geography, terminology, personalities, and more. Every Allied division that crossed the English Channel on June 6, 1944 has its own listing as do the major Axis divisions that fought them. Brief biographies of major military and political leaders on both sides provide a handy “who’s who” of the campaign. The book also includes entries for related popular culture: GI slang, the best movies about D-Day, and major writers such as Stephen Ambrose and Cornelius Ryan. Cross-references make the book easy to use. With hundreds of entries, Brassey’s D-Day Encyclopedia is an indispensable reference tool for history buffs and interesting browsing for readers who want to know more about World War II.

                              5 out of 5 stars One-stop Shopping.......2006-07-06

How did this little gem go unreviewed for so long? If you want a "one stop shopping" place for Operation Overlord, this book is the choice. The organization, content, and execution are all excellent. My only suggestion would be more illustrations but that's a small complaint in a book that contains a tremendous variety of subject matter and presents it in comprehensible, readable form. There's even examples of D-Day movies with favorite lines from each. Altogether a top-notch effort.

                                    Book Description

Confronting the possibility that as many as 20 percent of existing plants and animals will be extinct by 2030, The Penguin Atlas of Endangered Species is an indespensable resource for locating and identifying different species of wildlife and shows how human survival depends on biodiversity. This useful reference traces the movement and dispersion of animals and plants across continents, catalogs the inhabitants of different ecosystems, and provides at-a-glance information about vulnerable species. It also presents an authoritative and easy-to-understand analysis of the key environmental issues in case studies that examine the major threats to biodiversity and the measures being taken toward conservation. The Penguin Atlas of Endangered Species is an important and accessible reference suitable for professionals and students alike.
