    Book Description

A refreshing change from abstract writings about landscape architecture, Waterstained Landscapes is an illustrated essay, narrated by a fictional landscape architect, Ann Crane, who moves from Los Angeles to Colorado's Front Range. Through the imaginary Crane, author Joan Woodward argues that deriving landscape designs from the natural patterns and processes of a particular region is a key to creating distinctive, appropriate, and manageable designs.

Combining elements of a journal, sketchbook, notebook, and textbook, Waterstained Landscapes focuses on the Denver region and the dry West. Protagonist Crane learns that tracing the "waterstain" -- water concentration and accompanying plant responses -- is like reading the braille of western landscapes, a hidden text that reveals information about natural processes and human values. The book describes the regional processes that shape these plant patterns, and goes on to explore how natural and cultural mechanisms change and affect designed and undesigned landscapes over time. Woodward takes special note of the evolution of landscape design eras, following the fate of one house as its garden changes under the influence of different styles and various owners' tastes.

Through her characterization of Crane, Woodward teaches a personal approach to discovering, recognizing, and identifying patterns embedded in the earth. Crane tries to understand and not detract from the beauty and history of her chosen home, the Denver Front Range, even as she inevitably changes her own environment. Crane's heightened awareness of the region creates an opportunity for Woodward to demonstrate a method by which a region's patterns and processes can be used to inspire fitted designs. Woodward also provides illustrated design models ranging in scale from a home garden to a highway interchange, and examples of the work of acclaimed landscape architects in the Denver area.

Until now, few designers have explored the underpinnings of regional landscape design. In this clear, straightforward, and thoughtful book, Woodward illuminates the benefits to society, to clients, and to the land itself when the work of designers and planners is executed with a sensitivity to local and regional processes and patterns. The author unites theory, practical methods, and illustrated examples in one volume, making Waterstained Landscapes an invaluable resource and inspiration to homeowners as well as professionals and students from design and other related disciplines.

          Book Description

This textbook brings modern I/O analysis to the undergraduate level. Consistent with modern analysis, the authors focus explicitly on the nature of strategic interaction and make extensive use of game theoretic tools. At the same time, they never lose sight of the policy motivation behind much IO analysis. Formal analysis is combined with many practical applications, and the presentation does not assume familiarity with calculus, rather it relies on the ability to work through algebraic equations.

1 out of 5 stars Not very clear.......2007-08-10

I had a very hard time following what's going on because the language is not very clear and too verbose. The book focuses on the beauty of language rather than how to express the ideas in a clear and understandable manner. Makes simple stuff a lot harder than it should. Translating equations into words is sometimes confusing, and the concepts are too ideal that they can hardly apply to the real world situations.

1 out of 5 stars do not touch.......2006-12-26

the book is filled with typo. Given that this is third edition, the author doesn't seem to pay much attention to the hw. I was a TA for this class, and it took me some times to figure out what i did wrong because the hw questions are wrong. The theories in this book can only be applied in the context of the book's examples; some of these theories are not general and can't be applied in a broad sense.

5 out of 5 stars Induvitably excellent book!.......2003-11-04

Above all, it enraptured me with its practical orientation,
which really builds the economic sense at the reader. Numerous, straight superior and often also heartbreaking examples make theory well comprehensible. There doesn't lack nor more complex mathematical assecession for more serious study. 1A

This book describes MONASH, a dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of the Australian economy. In standard applications, MONASH is run with about 100 industries. Via a suite of add-on programs, results can be generated for 57 sub-national regions, 340 occupations and numerous types of households.

Our aim in building MONASH was to make a practical contribution to economic decision-making in Australia. In trying to achieve this objective, we have produced a model with several innovations which will be of interest to economists even if they have no particular concern for Australian problems. These innovations are largely associated with closures. With different closures MONASH produces: estimates of changes in technologies and consumer preferences (historical closure); explanations of historical developments such as the rapid growth since the mid-1980s in Australia's international trade (decomposition closure); forecasts for indust

              Book Description

Financial leadership must not be confused with financial wealth, warns Jeremy Taylor in this compelling work--the most recent in his Quorum Books series. He sets up guideposts from history to point the way out of our current financial crisis and develops the concept of financial stewardship to show why private gain must be countered with public responsibility. In the course of U.S. history six leaders emerged to set the country on a balanced course--Alexander Hamilton, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Carter Glass, and Franklin Roosevelt. By exercising leadership, they were able to achieve the primary goal of finance--balancing private and public interests. Based on their successes and on an analysis of recent history, Taylor recommends specific actions for rebuilding a financial system with a sense of public responsibility. Taylor chronicles how the great financial leaders in U.S. history succeeded in moving the country forward by serving as intermediaries between contradictory economic forces. He then discusses the series of financial failures that began in the 1970s--lack of monetary discipline, disturbances in commercial financial institutions, and budgetary irresponsibility. He concludes by proposing specific measure based on a sense of public responsibility. These include replacing multiple oversight boards with designated agencies and replacing laissez-faire policies with enforcement of prudent management policies in the private sector.

                        Book Description

Truly an example of engineering ingenuity born out of the desperation of war, the legendary 'all-wooden' Mosquito was perhaps the best twin-engined fighter-bomber of its size to see action in World War 2. The first bomber variant to enter service was the B Mk IV, initial examples of which were issued to No 2 Group's No 105 Sqn at Swanton Morley, in Norfolk, in November 1941. Considerably faster than the unit's previous Blenheim Mk IVs, powered by inline rather than radial engines, and made of wood instead of metal alloy, the Mosquito initially proved a challenging mount for both air– and groundcrew alike.

Montana is a wingshooter's smorgasbord. What's been lacking is a menu. Not any more. Chuck and Ben have pooled their wingshooting savvy into the complete guide to wingshooting Montana. Includes maps, graphs, tips, and technique sections. They evaluate the hunting in each section of the state-what species are present, in what numbers, where to go, and when to go there. They tell you what the towns have to offer the out-of-state hunter (or the resident, for that matter.) Covers sage grouse, Hungarian partridge, pheasant, sharptails, blue, ruffed and spruce grouse, Merriam's turkey, ducks, and geese. With this guide, you can virtually visit Montana "cold" and find a place to hunt the species you want, and nearly be assured of a good hunt. If you're thinking of expanding your horizons to the Big Sky Country, this book is a must. 278 pages.

I just saw this book today in a gift shop in Montana. I bought his other book "Montana Wildlife Portfolio" and will also buy his "Wings" book. If you like wildlife, Montana, the outdoors, and great photography, I highly recommend this book and also his Wildlife book. My 12 year old grandson was also impressed, so I can recommend these books to young or old. It is very high quality re-production by Farcountry Press. A bargin at the listed price.

                                Book Description

Defiant and opionated, Rick Bass has written an inspired essay advocating wolf reintroduction and recolonization, in the context of one, small pack's fate. An environmental issue for all, philosophical for some and yet moral for Bass, the wolf and its return have polarized the whole of the West--igniting the passions of both cattle ranchers and environmentalists, wildlife biologists and hunters. The result of years of personal study and scores of interviews with people both for and against the wolf's return to the Northern Rockies, THE NINEMILE WOLVES is not so much a scientific study as one man's' vigorous, emotional inquiry into the proper relationship between man and nature.

I can't believe that only ONE person read that book! I LOVED it. And I am just a kid. I read two books on the same pack and this one was the second one I read. At the sad part I cried in this book even though I already knew what happened and I don't normally cry in books. He was a strong author and he told about his life he left his own soul in that book and no one bothered to even write a REVIEW even except for one person. This book is extrodinary! You should really read it. You will be pulled in to it as he tells about how wolves changed so many people's lives. You have to read it. I may be just some kid reading a book that is ment for 15+ but I have as much say in it as anyone else. You have to read it. You will never see wolves in the same way again.

5 out of 5 stars You'll want wolves in your backyard........1997-12-13

Well, you won't want them in your backyard if you're raising cattle. This story about the Ninemile wolf pack in northwestern Montana is a fascinating account of a wolf reintroduction program, and it deals with the complexity of the situation thoroughly and compassionately. Bass makes no secret of his own opinions--he wants wolves to make a comeback in the lower 48--but he discusses the concerns of the ranchers and all parties involved in a professional, fair manner. I learned more about wolves from reading this book than from any other source, and it helped me to clear up many of my own misconceptions about these canines. Bass very cleverly shows us the human side of the wolf reintroduction issue, the often predictable pattern of what happens when you put wolves and people together. And it helped me to think about wolves in a new way--if there's an antonym for anthropomorphism, Bass's writing is it. And like all of Bass's other books, this one displays his uncanny economy with words. If you think that all nonfiction writing should be devoid of passion or color, this isn't the book for you. But if you love wolves, you'll love this book.
