Book Description
Wood is one of the most popular and desirable building materials on the contemporary scene, its special qualities serving as a reminder of our connection to the physical world in an era where virtual reality has crept into almost every facet of day-to-day life. Featured here are over thirty examples of the most expressive and inventive uses of wood in design and architecture from all over the world. An inviting fireplace perch set beneath shelves of natural maple that stretch to the ceiling; a striking geometric studio sits nestled, half-hidden amidst the swampy creeks and overgrown scrub oaks that grow along Florida's eastern seaboard. In over 360 spectacular photos, from Tadao Ando's Museum of Wood to Edward Cullinan's Westminster Lodge, each building is remarkably fresh and distinctly original. A gorgeous addition to the bookshelf of any architect, builder, or lover of beautiful design, Wood serves not only as a document of present ingenuity in the craft, but as a signpost pointing toward an entirely new direction in architecture.
Customer Reviews:
you can do better than this.......2006-12-28
I am in agreement with the Amazon reviews I read from John and Scott on this one...
1) Not featuring Greene and Greene quality of wood detailing.
2) Nor a good guide for what it claims to cover.
I think the cover sells this book to people. This seems to be a book I see a lot on the selves at Borders and Barnes and Noble; it must be marketed well with people pushing it pretty hard. It might sell too, but don't be fooled.
If you're seeking books about wood and it's applications look for books with more substance such as the "In Detail" line, or "Wood Houses: Spaces for contemporary living," or seek specific architects (the ones in the Northwest such as James Cutler or Miller/Hull Partnership seem to come to mind, or an even better idea may be Shigeru Ban.) If you are a novice concerning architecture books who's just seeking a coffee-table book, start by picking up masters such as Mies or Corbu and work your way up into materials books.
When buying books, it is not always true with books that you "pay for what you get," but in this case I paid relatively cheap, and that's exactly what I got.
A must-read for architects and architecture students!!.......2003-03-12
This book is a must-read for architects and architecture students who are designing with wood. These well-chosen projects from around the world highlight the varying qualities which can be achieved through the use of wood. The designs reveal a close attention to the inherent properties of the material, and showcase many of the ways in which they can be exploited by a designer. The photographs nearly allow the reader to touch the material and feel the texture. This book is a great one to keep on the shelf and leaf through to ignite the imagination before beginning a new design. The book was previously published under the title "The New Wood Architecture."
Termite Food........2003-01-24
If your expecting beautiful wooden architecture like Greene & Greene's or Val Agnoli's, look elsewhere. Most of the buildings in this book look cold and lifeless. I don't even think a Termite could stomach this book!
Does not do justice to its title.......2002-09-19
This book is not a very good guide for people interested in what its title claims to cover.
The project selection is pretty poor with the exemption of a couple housed and Ando's projects.
To put it simply the book lacks a larger gradient on the possibilities this material has to offer. The majority of the projects, which have practically no drawings to accompany them, are an aesthetic use of wood, and most of them do a poor job at this. Even so the book has great pictures and the projects are visually entertaining. They just don't sum up the new directions and design wood has taken in architecture.
Wood : New Directions in Design and Architecture.......2002-06-15
You donÕt have to be a tree-hugger to love this book, which is as appealing to the senses as a forest after a spring shower. Stungo is based in London and the majority of the 31 buildings are European, though there are a few from Australia, Japan, and north AmericaÑincluding the marvelous Skyrose Chapel of Fay Jones and Maurice Jennings in Whittier. Sections examine green architecture, structural possibilities, and updating the vernacular, and houses are balanced by schools, museums, and sports buildings. Excellent photographs, plans, and sections supplement the concise text. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

Book Description
This study traces the development of Surrealist theory of visual art and its reception, from the birth of Surrealism to its institutionalization in the mid-1930s. Situating Surrealist art theory in its theoretical and discursive contexts, Kim Grant demonstrates the complex interplay between Surrealism and the critical expectations of contemporaries. She examines the challenge to Surrealist art raised by the magazine Cahiers d’Art, which promoted a group of young painters dedicated to a liberated and poetic painting process that was in keeping with the formalist evolution of modern art. Grant also discusses the centrality of visual art in Surrealism as a material manifestation of poetry; the significance of poetry in French theories of modern art; and the difficulties faced by an avant-garde movement at a time when contemporary audiences expected revolutionary innovation.

this is a must have hockney book.......2004-09-30
I have read all of Hockney's interview books that I know of. Also as an avid and harsh critic of books pertaining to artists I have to say that this one is a book that will not let you down. It is simple in that Hockney discusses his photographic work over a period of four or five years and several interviews. What is majestic about this book is that it quickly envelopes the entire spectrum of painting, sight , and photography. Hockney talks about what it means to be an "artist" in the barest sense of the word. It is inspiring as well as insightful on several levels. If you get this book, you wont be unsatisfied.

Book Description
"Chemical leasing” represents an innovative business model, in which chemicals are no longer simply sold to the customer to render a specific service, but made available and maintained. This way, the economic interest no longer lies in selling the chemical product, but in providing a chemical service. All the stakeholders will thus endeavour to enhance the efficiency of the various substances to a maximum. This book is based on the results of two studies facilitated by the Austrian Ministry of Environment and key players of the industry, in which the potentials for the introduction of such a business model for Austria were investigated. A classical "win–win” solution evolves, which spares the environment by reducing emissions, gives rise to an optimisation of company processes, both in terms of quality and quantity, and redefines the supplier – customer relationship.

Book Description
The number of alternative education programs in the United States has increased significantly over the past several years. Unfortunately, the number of resource books addressing alternative education has not paralleled program growth. Filling a major gap in the literature, Chalker and Brown provide concrete solutions to challenging problems associated with the planning, development, and implementation of alternative education programs for K-8 students. They break the book into equal parts, treating, respectively, K-5, 6-8 and combined K-8 efforts at prevention and early intervention before students reach high school. Public school administrators and alternative program educators will find this book useful and educational professionals at the national and state level will appreciate the activities aimed at school improvement initiatives.

The Journey -- Revelations for Personal and Professional Rel.......2001-03-17
The hour (or so) it takes to read this book is a very worthwhile investment. The book addresses how we each have at our disposal a mechanism to raise us above our current problems and concerns to achieve personal and professional happiness and fulfillment, a fulfillment based upon making a meaningful contribution to the lives of others. The book teaches that each of us are empowered to make a difference in not only our own lives -- raising us above our current circumstances -- but also in the lives of the people all around us, to the mutual betterment of all.
An inspiring and useful tool for improving relationships........1998-12-09
I have had the pleasure of attending seminars given by the authors and have experienced the teachings within "The Journey" first hand. They are not only applicable to today's business environment, but very timely as well. The messages and focused direction of the steps to developing better relationships (both professional and personal) are easy to understand and even easier to implement.
I've found that most people forget a great deal of what they learn in seminars unless the material is immediately applied and often re-visited. The authors have given us a book we can refer to and use to refresh our memories and re-energize our daily lives.
I've read many similar type books and I place "The Journey" at the top of my prefered list, alongside the "Celestine Prophecy" and "The Tenth Insight". They all capture our interest through (somewhat) fictional stories, hold our attention by using our curiosity and teach us about life through practical, common sense techniques and applications.
You will enjoy the ride (and the read).
Exceptional insight and highly motivational.......1998-12-04
`The Journey' is one of those few books that offers real guidance and solutions to people seeking better relationships, both at work and in their personal life. I found this book inspiring and engrossing; the story the author shares with his readers immediately captivates them because we all can relate to what he has experienced. The manner in which he reveals the steps to better understanding yourself will leave you nodding your head in agreement. It's short enough that it doesn't get preachy (like a lot of books about relationships tend to do) yet long enough to provide positive and thought-provoking examples of how we can respect and accept differences of those we work and live around.
The authors, Jed Selter and Gil Tumey, have emphasized the communication stumbling block in everyday interactions and how to overcome and defeat the obstacles that miscommunication deals us. `The Journey' is fascinating and insightful; I highly recommend it to everyone who has ever felt that there was more to life than the rat race we all feel we are caught up in.
Excellent - for those seeking joy and meaning in life........1998-12-04
The Journey is a powerful and motivating story, easily read and understood. It tells of the transformation that can occur as we understand and embrace the concepts that bring happiness and meaning to our lives. Such a simple, true, and hopeful message - one we MUST share with others!

Book Description
On 28 September 1066 William of Normandy landed near Hastings and prepared to meet the Anglo-Saxon army of King Harold Godwinson. On 10 October 1066 the two armies met; and after six hours of fighting the Anglo-Saxon army was crushed and their king slain. The Normans set up castles to control the native population, and four-fifths of all England's land changed ownership. However, despite initial Norman success, it was fully two centuries before the Anglo-Norman kings managed to penetrate the wild interiors of Wales and Scotland, and many more centuries before the countries of Scotland, Wales and England were united under one crown.

Book Description
Smart Jews addresses one of the most controversial theories of our day: the alleged connection between race (or ethnicity), intelligence, and virtue. Sander Gilman shows that such theories have a long, disturbing history. He examines a wide range of texts—scientific treatises, novels, films, philosophical works, and operas—that assert the greater intelligence (and, often, lesser virtue) of Jews.
The book opens with a discussion of concepts that relate intelligence and race (particularly those that figure in the controversial bestseller The Bell Curve); it then describes “scientific” theories of Jewish superior intelligence that were developed in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Gilman explores the reactions to those theories by Jewish scientists and intellectuals of that era, including Sigmund Freud, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The conclusion turns to how such ideas figure in modern novels and films, from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Last Tycoon to Stephen Spielberg’s Schindler’s List and Robert Redford’s Quiz Show.
Gilman demonstrates how stereotypes can permeate society, finding expression in everything from scientific work to popular culture. And he shows how the seemingly flattering attribution of superior intelligence has served to isolate Jews and to cast upon them the imputation of lesser virtue.
A fascinating, highly readable book, Smart Jews is an essential work in our ongoing debates about race, ethnicity, intelligence, and virtue.
Customer Reviews:
Jews are a profession, NOT ethnicity.......2006-10-16
That Jews are smart is a fact, of which I am a living proof. Throughout my miserable 34 years of life I was always called a "professor" (which in 2001 almost became real), but poor fellows don't know:
Jew is a profession, not enthinicity/religion. You can be Jewsih too - just STOP paying retail and talk using scientifc terms to completely confuse up the listener. Only applies to non-religious, the religious part of us often need pscychiatric evaluation, i dont understand someone washing meat and fish in separate bins.
Now tell me if I am not smart:
Polish first & last names, West Euro culture, Heavy Music, Electrical Engineering, Theoretical Physics, chemsitry, biotek, RF/Microwaves LNA design, VLSI logic and layout design, blue eyes, leather and metal, driving Ferrari, love to waste time writing [...]
the power of good study habits.......2005-12-12
Most attacks on racism concentrate on rebutting the silly idea that some human groups are intellectually inferior. Gilman uses another strategy, he attacks one necessary implication of this idea, the idea that some groups are such as Jews are intellectually superior. It is true that, on the average Jews tend to do relatively well in school. This is because they tend to work hard at their studies. The tradition of hard academic effort comes to them from the culture in which they are raised. Jews are taught by elders that intellectual achievement comes from hard work rather than inborn talent. One of the greatest Jewish scholars (the Vilner Goen) was asked how someone could become a genius ('goen') like him. He replied in Yiddish "Vil nor un ir vet zayn a goen" ("Just want it badly enough and you'll be a genius") He meant that his accomplishments came from his strong will to study.
Unfortunately, some people do not grasp this and imagine that Jewish scholarly achievements come from greater innate ability. They then use this false idea to support the idea that there are innate intellectual differences between different human groups. I always thought that the reason for this mistake was that believers in innate Jewish superiority are ignorant of the power of culture and imagine that all group differences must be genetically based but Gilman demonstrates that the reasons are more complex. People tend to stereotype mentally strong people as physically weak. People who hate Jews think of them as physically weak and so conclude that they must be mentally strong.
point proven.......2005-11-30
As the summary of the book points out, the subject matter the author is aiming at is not to tell the reader whether or not jewish intelligence is superior. Racially minded or non-racially minded, its agreed regardless that the genetic difference relative to their own sub-species would be too slight scientifically to create anywhere near the level of mental superiority the jews generally associate with themselves over others. The subject matter is to explain how the common person has come to BELIEVE this myth through media. Skeptic? The jewish reviewers on this page are ironically proving the books entire point.
Gilman "knew" the answer before he wrote the book.......2000-11-05
For people who are interested in resolving the question whether there is some truth behind the image of the "smart Jew", this book is NOT to be recommended. One would expect that Gilman sets out to test the hypothesis "Are Jews (on average) more intelligent than gentiles?" on the basis of the available evidence. And this is certainly a testable hypothesis. However, as the book's subtitle suggests, Gilman's review is not intended as such a test. On the contrary, from the beginning, Gilman starts out with the conviction that the idea of a Jewish superiority in intelligence is absurd and solely motivated by racist thinking. Correspondingly, he treats all the reviewed studies alike, as though there were no differences in their quality, be it conceptually or empirically. Instead of evaluating the particular merits and pitfalls of each single study one by one, Gilman presents us a hopeless mix of reported science and morals. He paints a picture of a scientific enterprise which is hopelessly lost in its preconceptions and which from the outset was bound to fail, because (as Gilman just knows) there ARE no differences to be found.
Several times, Gilman responds to scientific arguments with non-scientific, moralistic ones. For example, after introducing the work of Raphael Patai (The Jewish Mind, 1977) and Kevin MacDonald (A people that shall dwell alone. Judaism as a group evolutionary strategy, 1994), he accuses these authors of being tactless in using the term "selection" as likely process which has shaped Jewish IQ, because it reminds Gilman of the "selection" in the Nazi concentration camps during the holocaust. Here, the author clearly instrumentalizes the suffering of Nazi-victims, because the kind of genetic selection Patai and MacDonald propose is one acting through traditional Jewish practices in choosing a suitable partner for marriage, not one through between-group homicide. After presenting this (scientifically invalid) moral argument Gilman doesn't make any attempt to present scientific arguments against the actual evidence for Jewish eugenic practice on intelligence as a heritable trait. To him the idea is obviously too absurd (and obscene at that) to deserve serious consideration, and empirical evidence doesn't seem to count anything in Gilmans social constructivist approach.
For Gilman, even to hypothesize that there may be differences between groups such as Jews and gentiles amounts to no less than racism. To be sure, there have been several scientists with strong racist views, but certainly not all of them were of that kind. Here, Gilman is unable or unwilling to make any distinction between bad and better science. Any scientifically untested racist statement made by some historic scientist is scored equal to obviously more serious studies undertaken by (often Jewish) researchers. Gilman seems also unable or unwilling to distinghish between the study of group differences and group discrimination which strongly implies that he is not used to making a difference between the "is" and the "ought". This feature alone disqualifies him for handling the subject, because from his personally favored "ought" only one of two possible "is'" can follow.
In conclusion, Gilman fails to show that there isn't any truth in the idea of Jewish superior intelligence beyond social construction. Therefore, only readers who share Gilman's preconceptions about the topic will enjoy reading this book, while all other readers will find this book hardly challenging. But then: what is the use of a book which doesn't have the power to challenge one's mind, but only to please it?
very academic.......2000-10-24
interesting book. it discusses how the myth that jews are smart, has developed. It does'nt answer the question 'are jews smarter?' and actually, in a very academic unbiased research, it concludes that such a question can't be answered.
