    Book Description

Architectural Building Codes by James G. Scott All architects must have a solid working knowledge of building codes. Noncompliance means facing strained schedules and budgets at best, and lawsuits at worst. Yet until now, no resource has been available to professionals that demystifies architectural building codes in straightforward, easy-to-understand language, with a unique graphic presentation. James G. Scott's Architectural Building Codes slices through the technical, legal, and bureaucratic jargon of building codes with a direct, engaging style. Beginning with the assumption that building codes are by nature complex and difficult to understand, Mr. Scott provides both the theoretical principles and practical grounding all architectural professionals need to efficiently incorporate code regulations into their designs. The author bridges the gap between theory and application, turning the arcane, impenetrable rules of building codes into usable concepts. The material is cogently organized from general to specific ideas, leading the reader on a logical progression through the maze of code regulation. Comprehensive in scope, this book covers building codes with a refreshingly broad perspective. Architectural Building Codes is a complete user's guide that covers a wide range of topics, including: An outstanding graphic presentation featuring striking pen-and-ink drawings illuminates technical concepts and regulations. The Appendix provides a list of practical addresses that guides the reader to other useful resources. Architectural Building Codes is a one-of-a-kind reference and resource for architecture students as well as professionals responsible for code compliance. Building managers and owners who require both practical information and a broad grasp of code issues will find this book an indispensable guide.

      4 out of 5 stars Technical -- Advanced.......2000-03-06

Covers virtually anything do do with black and white processing. Provides all the 'How To" so lacking in other books. Does not omit non-Ilford developers, but includes charts for them as well. But the book is certainly for the serious ameteur or pro, and is very technical. I really need the data provided on a daily basis, so the techical aspects don't bother me -- they're a plus! But others may find the book too much and wish simpler explanations. I'm biased here.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of black and white enlargning and developing.......1999-09-02

This book is a manual of b/w photography in the whole. The book is filled with useful information on how to develop your films and create good enlargements and also has a good storing and caring instructions for your precious films and photographs. Useful procedures like knifing and toning is also covered. The book contains information on various tools, like "the difference between diffuser and condenser enlargers" and many more. Great book for every b/w enthusiast.

      Book Description

Self-interest, economic efficiency and private property rights are among the most basic assumptions of market economics. But can an economic theory built on these assumptions alone provide adequate insight into human nature, motivation and ultimate goals to guide our economic life? John Stapleford says no along with those economists who recognize the limits of their discipline. He insightfully shows us in detail how ethics are inextricably intertwined with economic life and analysis. Writing from a Christian ethical perspective, he interacts with seven standard introductory economics texts, exploring the moral challenges imbedded in various macro-, micro- and international economic theories and outlining a faithful response to them. Among the important ethical issues addressed are Keyed to seven of the most widely used introductory economics texts--Gwartney, Stroup and Sobel; Mankiw; Mansfield and Behravesh; McConnell and Brue; Miller; Samuelson and Nordhaus; and Stiglitz--this book will be especially useful for introductory courses in economics.

2 out of 5 stars Is Christianity really interested in an equitable economy? (2.5*s).......2006-11-08

Ethics - that is, right and wrong - are not ordinarily considerations for economists when analyzing current economic functioning or in proposing measures for the future, although legal standards must be adhered to. This book is a rather uncertain effort to suggest the position that Christians should take concerning some of the aspects of economic life that are contrary to Christian ideals.

The author basically accepts a capitalist, free-market economy based on private property and control and geared to constant growth with highly unequal outcomes as the only legitimate economic form. But it becomes immediately evident that an economy based on self-interest produces outcomes and side-effects that do not comport well with Christian ideals. Laissez-faire capitalist economies cannot produce any where near enough dignified jobs that permit all who can work to be lifted out of poverty and become full members of Christian society - a significant concern of Jesus. At this point the author is unsure where to turn. He suggests that Christians should personally give voluntarily sufficient resources to alleviate poverty, yet he also seems to lend vague support to government initiatives despite an expressed reluctance for governmental intervention in the economy.

In addition to the goods and services produced that make for a viable society, capitalistic enterprise also can degrade the environment and create hugely profitable businesses based on pornography and gambling with deplorable social consequences.

The book leaves much doubt as to whether Christians should be that concerned about the state of capitalistic economies and their impacts on people. In the first place, Christianity eschews materialism, preferring to focus on a greater end. If Christians are "aliens and strangers on earth," as the author suggests, where is the incentive for remedial efforts? Furthermore, any efforts to plan for a better outcome are criticized as arrogant for failing to note that mankind consists of self-centered sinners. Perhaps the otherworldliness of Christianity and the rejection of empowered reasonable men is why the author does not really assess whether Christians are now addressing the deleterious consequences of capitalistic economies or make any concrete proposals as to how a Christian perspective can become ingrained in an economic system that focuses almost exclusively on profits.

Curiously, the author actually analyzes the ramifications of laissez-faire capitalism quite well. The Structural Adjustment Policies that the IMF and the World Bank forced on developing nations that got into debt trouble in the 1970s and later are disgraceful. The huge inequalities resulting in very widespread poverty that are a part of the US economy is plainly laid out. However, in the face of all of this evidence concerning the dark side of capitalism, the author's reluctance to recommend more vigorous actions, even major revamping of our economic system, is not really understandable. Apparently, Christianity is not really meant to help mankind while on earth.

Work, for most of us, is something we do, not something we think about. We may wonder whether our work is sufficiently stimulating, whether it brings in enough money, or whether it makes a difference in the grand scheme of things, but we don't often question what, in fact, work really is, and why we work in the first place. In The Working Life, Joanne Ciulla asks these critical questions and others, taking a philosophical, sociological, and practical look at the nature of work and its role in our lives today.

As Ciulla points out, we live in a work-oriented society where, even though we have more freedom and flexibility than ever and more tools to increase convenience and efficiency, our work determines our lives. We have "gone beyond the work ethic," she states, to a point where our jobs have become our primary source of identity. To understand this, Ciulla looks at the values we reflect in our choice of jobs and professions, the attitudes we express in our language for work, and the sociohistorical journey that work has taken from cursed necessity to calling. She follows the path of work in our recent past, from unregulated labor and slavery, through unionism, to the rise of the all-encompassing corporation and today's blurred lines between private and public lives. In the final section, Ciulla investigates the role that work plays in our understanding and use of time and our search for meaning.

Now teaching courses on ethics, leadership, and critical thinking at Virginia's University of Richmond, Ciulla has examined and experienced the nature of work from both sides of the managerial divide. After supporting herself through the first nine years of an academic career with bar and restaurant work, she went on to study and teach business ethics at Harvard and Wharton. These varied experiences give the book a balanced and sensitive tone, adding credibility to her insights. She supports and refines her ideas about work with the comments of philosophers, writers, sociologists, economists, management theorists, and even the narratives of popular television shows. Her sources range from Aristotle and the ancient storyteller Aesop to the early-20th-century time-study engineer Frederick Winslow Taylor, the comic strip "Dilbert," and modern-day business gurus. The diversity of perspectives is inspiring and helps--together with Ciulla's own interpretations and clear, precise prose--create a thought-provoking and stimulating look at the nature of work. --S. Ketchum

            Book Description

EXPLORING AND EXPLODING OUR NOTIONS OF WORK

Joanne B. Ciulla, a noted scholar in Leadership and Ethics, examines why so many people today have let their jobs take over their lives. Technology was supposed to free us from work, but instead we work longer hours-often tethered to the office at home by cell phones and e-mail. People still look to work for self-fulfillment, community, and identity, but these things may be increasingly difficult to find in today's workplace. Gone is the social contract where employees and employers shared a sense of mutual loyalty, yet many of us still sacrifice personal time for jobs that we could lose at the drop of a stock price. Tracing the evolution of the meaning of work from Aesop to Dilbert, and critically examining the past 100 years of management practices, Ciulla asks questions that we often willfully ignore at our own peril.

*When you are on your deathbed, will you wish you had spent more time at the office?

*Why do we define ourselves by our jobs rather than by other activities we do outside of work?

*What can employers and employees promise each other in today's business environment?

Provocative and entertaining, The Working Life challenges us to think about the meaning of work and its impact on our lives.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening, informative, enjoyable........2007-07-06

Ciulla covers a broad range of topics dealing with work -- its meaning throughout history, workplace ideologies/culture (i.e., how to get workers to want to do what they'd ordinarily rather not), the end of workplace loyalty, how we determine what is meaningful work, etc. -- and she does so in a very readable way. This book will likely make you think about the work choices you have made and have yet to make, and although it's not a practical, how-to-get-the-job-you-love type of book (nor is it meant to be), it will give you a broader perspective that will arm you to make wiser decisions. Regardles of whether you use the information to ruminate about your work life or make decisions or not, it's an enjoyable, informative, and sometimes eye-opening read.

4 out of 5 stars Employer manipulation and arbitrariness (4.25*s).......2007-06-21

Never at any time in our past have work and workplaces been such an integral part of our lives - often forming our very identities. Because of the centrality of work in our lives, the author conducts a wide-ranging examination of work including basic definitions and a brief historical look even to ancient times, its potential for providing meaning to our lives, and the control that employers have over the nature of work and the organization of workplaces.

As the author points out, work was once under the control of craftsmen, who worked to produce a complete product irrespective of the specific time needed. With the industrial revolution that manner of working was completely undermined as factory owners gained control by breaking manufacturing into a sequence of simplistic, timed steps to be performed by workers with minimal training, in essence bypassing skilled craftsmen. But the high-speed, dead-end nature of that work was problematical, resulting in massive turnover and no commitment on the part of employees, not to mention the formation of unions. Employers in the 1920s began a counter offensive by adopting a human relations approach geared to inducing willing compliance to perform deadening jobs. As part of that approach, businesses provided increased benefits for employees. Consumerism was promoted as the means to produce the meaning in lives lacking in the workplace. Employers have in more recent times pushed such initiatives as creating a family-like corporate culture (IBM), work teams for purposes of employee participation and empowerment, and promoting total quality management (TQM) to closely bind workers to companies and their agendas, especially white-collar workers. Many social critics, including C. Wright Mills, view these programs as mere manipulation of employees, creating conforming, compliant organization men.

There was the assumption that corporate and employee interests were one and the same and that loyalty and trust best described the new employment relationship. The superficiality of this new social compact was brought home in a devastating manner beginning in the early 1990s as corporations supposedly under the dictates of global markets unceremoniously shed thousands of loyal employees. These newly downsized companies were said to be re-engineered - more management speak for unilateral actions. Employee empowerment turned out to be a cynical ploy to be discarded at the first convenient opportunity.

Given the utter lack of concern on the part of employers to providing long-term employment, the author chides those who continue to look to places of employment to provide the fulfillment normally provided by family, friends, and communities. She notes that unions are the only the workplace organizations that have ever provided a basis for fairness and justice in contrast to the informality of implied agreements easily withdrawn by management.

The book is disappointing because having clearly assessed the state of employment in the US, the author does virtually nothing in recommending change, other than to state the obvious that employers are unreliable in terms of providing security and meaning. At the least, she could have outlined the European approach of works councils and active employment policies. European workers long ago realized that employers cannot be allowed to act with impunity when their economic well-being is at stake. The American system of employers arbitrarily turning workers' lives upside down with no avenue for effective worker input is unconscionable.

The book is a well-written, lively overview of the state of working in America. She notes others have described the internals of workplaces, most notably the Dilbert cartoons. She also notes the lack of community among workers, who prefer to adopt cynical self-coping approaches to modern work instead of collaborating to change it. In the face of the obvious employer disregard for employee well-being, the passivity of American workers is baffling.

5 out of 5 stars Makes use of myriad areas to exemplify values and attitudes.......2005-05-28

This book explores the over-worked state of Americans today and why people work at all. The author helps readers discover the values and attitudes expressed in their jobs using history, literature, popular culture, and personal anecdotes. Many good insights.

4 out of 5 stars A more optimistic 'Nickel and Dimed".......2001-11-29

Sciulla's book avoids policy conclusions, and other theoretical certainties as other books like Fogels' 4th Awakening. She notes the interesting point that "Today, clock time measures events" in the past events measured time. For example, in Magadascar a half hour was measured by the time it took to cook rice. She became interested in the nature of work when she subsidised one job teaching philosophy with another as a waitress in a restaurant. Ms. Ciulla is particularly struck by the fact thatt wealth has not brought happiness. People continue to want to earn a living. Even when people have enough to live on, many of them continue to want to work, remaining perplexed at the fact that while life is supposed to be easier, many continue to seek meaning through employment. However, she notes, employment provides a schedule and a rythm for daily life and serves as an outlet ofr greater forms of community participation.

                  Book Description

Micah Jenkins, a product of the Edisto Island plantation culture, developed into one of the outstanding regimental and brigade commanders in Lee's Confederate army. Jenkins took part in the action at First Manassas, Williamsburg, and Seven Pines, commanding the Palmetto Sharpshooters in the Seven Days' battle. After the Battle of Chickamauga, Jenkins's brigade arrived in Georgia, where Jenkins commanded Hood's division and then resumed command of his South Carolina Brigade. He later returned to Virginia, where he was tragically slain by friendly fire in the Battle of the Wilderness. In Prince of Edisto, Swisher presents a picture of this brave, intelligent leader, whose skills have often been overlooked. Using contemporary writings alongside Jenkins's letters, Swisher shows a range of events and well-researched material.

                      Book Description

Some of the world's largest and most spectacular birds are to be found among this group of wading birds. Tragically, they also include many of the world's most endangered species, as changes in land use erode their wetland habitats. Some like the White Stork have lived alongside humans for hundreds of years and are well known from numerous studies. Others, like the Storm's stork and ibises of West Africa, South-East Asia and South America live so secluded a life in the remote corners of the globe that they will probably be extinct before even the most basic details of their biology are known. In this monograph, three authors and two artists have combined their skills to capture what is known of this group of wading birds. The text opens with general chapters on taxonomy and feeding, breeding and behavior, followed by detailed coverage of each species.

                      Feeding behaviour species list:
