what about.......2002-05-14

The book is a very quick read. If your looking to just pass the time away I would definetly read this book. If your interested in learning something and taking it to the workplace I would choose another book. When I read a book I like to transfer the learning from the book to the workplace and with this book when I was finished I was unable to transfer my learning. Most of the skills I read about were common sense. I was hoping for something a little more "meaty".

Bottom-line should and should not.......1999-11-17

I just happened to work for a company one day and noticed this book while sitting at the reception desk. I browsed through the first few pages and before I realized, I was more than 1/2 way through it. 'Telephone Skills...' describes typical senarios that could occur and unfortunately do from time to time. It's filled with realistic situations and gives positive, and at times, humorous solutions. I think 'Telephone Skills...' is necessary in any environment- professional/social/and casual. I will recommend my 3 nieces (14,13 & 7 -ages) read this. Ask any parent with children- the phone rings, they run to answer it. I think this book is so informally written that even a child can read and understand it's meaning of being "good natured" polite even when it's someelse fault. On the other hand, it's packed with common sense techniques that make you wonder, why businesses are requesting seminars. Go figure! Now go on- buy it!

Great refresher for "experts"; great teaching for novices.......1999-06-29

I found this book to be a great refresher tool for the "expert" in any company as well as a great teaching tool for the entry level business person. Easy reading and comprehension. Fifty minutes packed with power!

In 1933 Congress granted American laborers the right of collective bargaining, but farmworkers got no New Deal. Cindy Hahamovitch's pathbreaking account of migrant farmworkers along the Atlantic Coast shows how growers enlisted the aid of the state in an unprecedented effort to keep their fields well stocked with labor.

This is the story of the farmworkers—Italian immigrants from northeastern tenements, African American laborers from the South, and imported workers from the Caribbean—who came to work in the fields of New Jersey, Georgia, and Florida in the decades after 1870. These farmworkers were not powerless, the author argues, for growers became increasingly open to negotiation as their crops ripened in the fields. But farmers fought back with padrone or labor contracting schemes and 'work-or-fight' forced-labor campaigns. Hahamovitch describes how growers' efforts became more effective as federal officials assumed the role of padroni, supplying farmers with foreign workers on demand.

Today's migrants are as desperate as ever, the author concludes, not because poverty is an inevitable feature of modern agricultural work, but because the federal government has intervened on behalf of growers, preventing farmworkers from enjoying the fruits of their labor.

Skeptical at First.......2007-06-02

My son was diagnosed last year through his elementary school with ADHD and they pushed medication however I was not about to go that route until I had dissolved every other possible alternative. I purchased the Feingold Diet cookbook and surprisingly the recipies are delicious! I was skeptical at first because my son is 6 years old and I was afraid he would put up an argument to eat these foods but to my surprise we all have liked the recipes we have tried. We have only been on the diet for about 4 weeks in which we have seen some changes in behavior (I think the first couple weeks he was rebelling about having to be on a "special diet" plus when he visits his dad everyother weekend, he has gotten food not approved on the diet which sets us back a couple days). Also to our surprise, my husband has experienced positive changes in his energy level and overall general health. You are what you eat!

Lifesaver Book.......2005-09-08

In the late '70s, an earlier version of this book changed my two-year old daughters life forever. I believe that then the title phrase was "hypoactive" instead of "hyperactive". I had an adorable, sweet, little girl that would suddenly go into uncontrollable rages. A neighbor happened to be watching the Phil Donahue show and told me about the cookbook that was discussed on the show that day. I bought it on Tuesday and by Saturday I had a new child. I explained to her that certain things were poison to her and that sugar would make her have what we called a "sugar fit". She, at age 2 1/2, became a helper in the process and would refuse any candy, etc. that was offered to her. She's now age 30, and still is careful about intake, staying aware of how foods affect her. She has never, ever had another "sugar fit". I'm looking for the book again for my son's little boy - age 2 1/2 - who has the same symptoms.

The Feingold Cookbook for Hyperactive Children.......2000-11-11

I have followed this cookbooks recommendations since 1983. My son is ADHD and my husband always said if you can't read it don't eat it. It definitely made a differnce in my sons actions and he is now graduating from college and we all still eat much healthier than we would have. The recipes in this cookbook are delicious and I would like to give atleast two of these for Christmas presents and I need one l for myself since whoever borrowed it never returned it to me. They must of liked it too.

This is a life changing book!.......2000-02-09

For parents of children who have been labled ODD, ADHD and other hyperactive and behaivor disorders, this book could change your lives. Dr. Fiendgold has come under critism for his ideas concerning the effect of cemicals in food and their effect on an individuals' nervious systems. When I decided to try Dr. Fiengold's diet I was desperite to help my ODD son and wanted to help him without putting him on drugs. Our whole family tried the diet for six weeks and the results were amazing! Our son is now 20 and a straight A student at the Univerisity of Wisconsin on a music scholarship! He still has to follow Dr. Feingold's guidelines for his diet, but he is a very delightful and productive young man today and has never been on drugs to control his behavior! Thank you DR. Fiengold! We love you!

This book needs to be reprinted!

Help for the Hyperactive Child.......2000-04-06

This is a tremendous resource for parents who, like I, feel they can help curb their hyperactive childs impulisive out-of-control behavior by being conscious of his diet. This book explains how a poor diet and/or food allergies can affect a childs behaviour then recommends foods to substitute or concentrate on as well as supplements that can also help. What I appreciated most was the food suggestions.

Interesting but Limited.......2004-04-05

Thunder Gods: The Kamikaze Pilots Tell Their Story by Hatsuho Naito is mistitled in that there is very little in the book in which the pilots tell their own story. Instead Naito's book is more of a chronological story of the history of the Kamikaze in general and the Thunder Gods in particular. While it is understandable that few of the pilots may be alive, the title creates expectations that were not fulfilled. The Thunder Gods were suicide pilots of jet propelled bombs; while Kamikaze pilots traditionally piloted airplanes.

Naito startes with the development of the rationale behind the use of kamikazes and the initial reluctance of the Japanese command to utilize them. Interestingly, it was not the command officers who pushed the idea of their use, but mid level officers who kept the idea alive. While this is a strong part of the book, Naito should have spent more time describing the conflict and how that conflict finally got resolved in favor of their use. The state of the war, and the continual Japanese loses, surely had a major impact on the decision,. But the massive use of suicide missions cannot be solely explained by theses loses. While history is full of examples of nations losing wars, the use of kamikazes on the scale utilized by the Japanese was unprecedented. The reader is left with the only explanation that the reason is somehow unique to the Japanese psyche. Such an explanation, while it may have some relevance, is too easy.

As a chronological history, the book is otherwise excellent. It reads easily and is well written.

Don't take the title too literally........2000-07-23

I read it expecting more eye-witness accounts, which is actually pretty dumb of me given that the eye witnesses are dead. There isn't much of "telling their story" in the book. Still, an interesting look at the Exploding Cherry Blossoms of World War II. Introduction by James Michener.

A wonderful find.......2002-01-16

Robert Grunst notices. That alone would recommend him to me as a human being --- but add the ability to access and shape elements of the language both rich and simple in the service of that awareness, and you have a poet of rare talents. The poems in this remarkable collection have a simultaneous clarity and depth reminiscent of Robert Haas that found me breathing slow and deep as I read, resenting distractions, reading and rereading to hold on to the feeling of connection. Any two or three of the poems of this collection would have merited a cover and a devoted readership. "Orchard House near the Vistula River" stayed in my ears for days. A wonderful find and a poet to watch.
