Painting Flowers in Watercolour: A Naturalistic Approach
Coral G. Guest Manufacturer: Timber Press, Incorporated ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0881925098 |
Book Description
Painting flowers has long been popular with artists, and there have been many books written on the subject. What makes this book different is the author's naturalistic approach to painting. The resulting watercolors are botanically correct but also show the beauty of flowers in a very real way — the velvety quality of a petal, the delicate colors, the gloss of a leaf.Customer Reviews:

Social Capital Versus Social Theory: Political Economy and Social Science at the Turn of the Millenium (Contemporary Political Economy)
Professor Fine Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0415241804 |
Book Description
Ben Fine traces the origins of social capital through the work of Becker, Bourdieu and Coleman and comprehensively reviews the literature across the social sciences. The text is uniquely critical of social capital, explaining how it avoids a proper confrontation with political economy and has become chaotic. This highly topical text addresses some major themes, including the shifting relationship between economics and other social sciences, the 'publish or perish' concept currently burdening scholarly integrity, and how a social science interdisciplinarity requires a place for political economy together with cultural and social theory.

Ben Fine demolishes 'social capital'.......2006-09-23
Ben Fine skins the social capital cat!.......2001-03-26
For me, the book's value inheres in the first 2 parts of the book, in which Fine gives a social history of the term's use (and abuse) since Pierre Bourdieu's pioneering contribution. As an economist, Fine is particularly critical of how the concept has been used in economics. Gary Becker, in his imperialstic push to encompass all of social life within a methodological individualist economic framework, is roundly criticized. James Coleman, a sociologist who ran a social capital seminar at the University of Chicago with Becker, is also singled out for his uncritical acceptance of economic assumptions in building a concept of "social capital" on social exchange theory.
Fine covers a vast amount of literature in economics, political science, sociology, and other disciplines. He is a harsh critic, but he is explicit about the criteria used for his evaluations and gives credit to many others as sources of his criticisms.
Fine's prose is a bit thick at times, and a diligent copy editor could probably have shortened the book by a third. However, Fine's obvious passion for his subject and the thoroughly annotated review of the literature make this a book that scholars in the social capital field will have to read. But of course, Fine would say, "the way things are going in this ever-expanding field, that may well include just about everyone!"

Mitchell, Henry Schultz, and Arthur F. Burns. They examine many issues that remain in contention today.

Plantation Earth: The Cross of Iron and the Chains of Debt
Moriah Saul Manufacturer: Not Avail ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1412006112 |
Book Description
This book is dedicated to the Constitution of the United States, and to the constitutionality of money in America, and to the intrinsic value of labor, the most valuable and truly intrinsic item in existence in our world. The only true value of money is its necessity to divide the fruits of labor in our modern system of barter; therefore labor is not only above capitol, it is above all other things of value in our world. And this opinion was shared by Abraham Lincoln as well as others, and the thought should be considered by all people, who can form their own opinion on the value of labor and the value of money, and which one deserves the higher consideration. Money is a yoke and those who control it control those who wear its yoke. The enormous differences between fiat unsecured paper currencies and the required intrinsic currency system of the United States Constitution is examined and discussed in depth. The Constitution is quoted, and it plainly states "that No State shall make anything other than gold or silver a legal tender in payment of debts," and yet all of the American States are today operating on a fiat unsecured currency system. This book encourages each and every reader to do some research and see if in their own opinion they agree with the one that I have formed, that the States are in non compliance with our Constitution on this issue.
I firmly believe that the Constitution of the United States should be taught in all public schools. That historical content and background, and the writings of the founding fathers should be taught in all schools, as the well the iniquities of the past that brought the Constitution of the United States into existence. I believe that it would be a definite advantage to all children to learn of their rights from the first Government agency with which they have dealings in life.
There are also other constitutional issues brought forward as food for thought, for the purpose of encouraging discussion. And with that said I will refer people to the opinion of Thomas Jefferson.
"Let no more people be heard of confidence in men, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution." Thomas Jefferson.

Disappointing. Off-target........2000-07-26
In this light, an increasing number of employers are reaching out to young people-in their recruiting efforts and in their new-employee orientations. So, a book on how to become an effective part of the corporate team might be a great tool. Wouldn't it be great to be able to give the new worker something to read to learn how to make the most of an employment experience from Day One? What a smart idea!
The Ultimate New Employee Survival Guide could have been that book . . . a real treasure for new employees and their bosses. Unfortunately, when I started reading beyond the cover, my spirits dampened . . . fast. As an employer highly sensitive to the messages that ought to be conveyed to a young person, I was dismayed and disappointed.
The author begins with a sort of lecture about how work is going to be dramatically different than college. OK, I'll buy that. But he wouldn't let go of the theme. Once said is enough said. Annoyingly, the theme continued to the point that I just wanted to stop reading. The message clearly emphasizes that work is a 180° shift away from college. OK, we understand that. Let's move on. We know that college course grades are not given at work: "The first thing you have to do is accept it. That's just the way the working world is. Then you have to learn new ways of judging your performance...." The tone casts employment in such a negative light, college students reading the book may elect to go on to grad school just to avoid the experience!
Holton does offer 12 Steps for New Employee Survival (does "12-step" sound familiar?). 1.Attitude. 2. Expectations. 3. Breaking In. 4. Impression Management. 5. Relationships. 6. Supervisor. 7. Organizational Culture. 8. Organizational Savvy. 9. Organizational Roles. 10. Work Savvy. 11. Task Knowledge. 12. Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes. The chapters of the book dig into each of these steps, with explanations, advice, and "Fast-Starter Tips." The author encourages the reader to quickly gain a sense of ownership about one's career. A list of Ultimate Survival Tips summarizes each chapter.
But the most irritating problem surfaced in the advice that Holton gives his young, impressionable readers. Most of it, in my opinion, is wrong and might damage a new employee's chances of success. There is some good mixed in with what I consider to be negative counsel. Judge for yourself. "If you persist in focusing on the fun in your life, you only confirm their assumptions about you. Your challenge in your first year is to show that you are serious about working hard. Once you establish that reputation, you can loosen up a bit." "Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut during the first six months." "The first year on the job is not the time to try to find a mentor." "Most new hires get noticed for all the wrong things they do." "A bad boss is not a legitimate excuse for poor performance."
There is a lot of valuable advice in this book. The approach is worthwhile and could help a lot of new employees. If you recommend the book to a protégé, I'd encourage you to schedule some coaching time to interpret the content and the attitude so you get your new employee started on the right foot. This book could serve as a model for you to develop a new employee guide specifically for your company-something that could help younger and older workers as they join you.

Fighting with Jeb Stuart: Major James Breathed and the Confederate Horse Artillery
David P. Bridges Manufacturer: Breathed-Bridges-Best LLC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0977450805 |
Book Description
Fighting with JEB Stuart: Major James Breathed and the Confederate Horse Artillery is the first biography of this important Southern officer, a brave and virtuous warrior who embodied all the qualities that made the Confederate Army one of the finest in history. Breathed's resume of combat mirrors that of General Lee's legendary Army of Northern Virginia. Major Breathed was involved in eighty-six battles, engagements and skirmishes. When the Civil War began, James Breathed was a 21-year-old physician at the beginning of his medical career. A Virginian by birth, and raised on a plantation in Maryland, he cast his lot with the Confederacy in April 1861. By chance, he shared a seat on a train with James Ewell Brown (JEB) Stuart, who encouraged Breathed to join the 1st Virginia Cavalry, a regiment commanded by Stuart. Breathed was then transferred to the newly formed Stuart Horse Artillery. For the doctor-turned-warrior, it was a perfect assignment.
Unencumbered by formal military training, Breathed developed his own unique style of command. Relentless in his efforts to defeat the enemy, he exhibited conspicuous gallantry and accomplishments on so many fields that his actions separated him from the pack of other battery commandersinside and outside the cavalry arm. Breathed's handling of horse artillery and accurate fire became recognizable to his enemies. Alexander C. M. Pennington, the leader of a celebrated Union battery of the horse artillery, looked forward to and dreaded his many encounters with Breathed.
In the minds of the Confederate veterans who knew him best, Breathed was no less of a legend than artillerist John Pelham. After the war doctor Breathed returned to continue his practice of medicine in Hancock, Maryland. He died February 14, 1870. This study is based upon previously unknown or overlooked family primary documents and archival sources, a keen appreciation of the terrain over which Breathed's guns rolled and fought, and a broad foundation of knowledge of the American Civil War in the Eastern Theater. Fighting With JEB Stuart adds something dramatically new to the literature of the Civil War.
