Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great book to inspire your young architect/planner.......2007-08-29

I saw this book in a store in the late seventies and bought it for myself. As a teenaged reader, I was very impressed with the art, and inspired by the text (nonsensical though some of it seemed). Clearly utopian and attractive, this book will inspire many a young artist or city planner. The fact that it is so far afield of the mainstream is only a plus: it will challenge and stimulate critical thinkers.

Note: with the high cost of building an arcology, and the need for (rather unamerican) centralized control, why haven't one of the arab states tried building one? UAE is certainly spending arcology-scale sums on the construction of the Burj Dubai complex...

1 out of 5 stars Wonderful illustrations, but the text is mostly nonsensical drivel.......2006-11-01

This book contains amazing illustrations and is highly imaginative. However, I must give it a one-star review because its pretentious author would have readers believe that he singlehandedly divined a set of new-age principles (incomprehensible to any reader, since they're inadequately explained and loaded with neologistic jargon) that he calls arcology (a word that, as its ending -ogy should suggest to any English language speaker, refers to a "study" or set of principles - NOT to structures themselves, which are properly called "hyperstructures").

I have a master of urban and regional planning degree from an accredited program at a major (big 10) university, and please let me tell you that the text of this book is pure "pseudoscience." It is designed to impress people who don't know science, but it doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Soleri has some legitimate cultural and designs criticisms (after all, who doesn't?) but he tries to merge these with inscrutable mystical gibberish, and he delights in creating lots of impressive-sounding words as he pretends that these words actually connect with scientific concepts. They do not. If you don't believe me, then just try to find any textbook of psychology, sociology, ecology, biology, etc., etc. that actually fits with his ravings. You will be able to confirm for yourself that Soleri is writing from his own individual mental creation, and that his notions of an organic city are not grounded in any of the research that people have actually done - he's creating from his own mind a set of organic analogies that he imagines will tie into a unified, organic whole. That is all totally in isolation from practical, achievable planning, ecology, etc. and doesn't tie in with any actual research. This book is an exercise in science-fantasy by a wonderful illustrator (who put his architectural background to good use in the wonderful illustrations here). It must not, however, be mistaken for anything else. It is a new age vision, a work of science-fantasy. Apart from a few of the well-known environmental concerns it expresses, the text of the book is basically a work of total fiction, with almost no authentic theoretical grounding whatsoever. For more authentic writings on environmental and early urbanist planning and design, please refer to Ian McHarg's "Design With Nature," and writings/designs of LeCorbusier. Their ideas are actually practical, implementable (Brasilia's design came from LeCorbusier's ideas), and connected with the mainstream. Urban planning is still a pretty young profession and this book is an unfortunate example of pure hubris - although beautifully illustrated and imaginative, its text should be recognized as equivalent to the "circle-squarers" in math, or homeopathic herbal remedies, or any other false-"science" designed to fool and impress those who don't have the training and the guts to call label it publicly as the nonsense that it is. This book is the basis of a utopian cult, and has nothing at all to do with actual science. Soleri's writings should not be treated as those of a prophet. He is a wonderful artist but a highly confused thinker. But that's the sort of thing that a lot of people believe to be a normal part of religion, it seems, and so this book has attracted a religious type of following, in which it is either swallowed (or not) as a matter of faith rather than treated properly as a mere set of ambitious hypothesis to be tested and refined. Instead, many people tend to assume that something that sounds complicated actually makes sense, but then don't want to admit when they themselves can't really get a rational understanding of it (people are afraid to seem ignorant or incorrect) and so the result is that every now and then, someone churns out a bunch of half-baked ideas that people revere instead of question, and then a cult forms. There is definitely a small Soleri cult that has formed around this book. People should recognize that although Soleri was creative, he was also an ultimately irrational thinker. Either that, or, like L. Ron Hubbard, he decided that the way to promote cultural change was to form a new religion. This book clearly goes beyond ecological and design considerations and presents a lengthy statement of a religious perspective, as posited by Soleri in a form he felt could draw from and capitalize on existing cultural concepts (everything from the big bang to the second coming). It's statement of faith is to offer the achievement of utopias of his own design. The problem is, Soleri hasn't a clue about authentic SOCIAL organization and problems (as any authentic text on Urban Planning, Sociology, etc. will be able to point out), and instead he dishes out heaps of mystical, idealized jargon with the idea that it's somehow actually feasible simply because it expresses his own personal ideals. Meaning: he wants it to be true - it's his own personalized utopian vision - and as such it is irrelevant to him that he often employs purely mystical speech to indoctrinate readers into his artificial notions of an organic, holistic, grand unified theory of everything. In the process he redefines and adapts popular phrases from both science and Christianity and creates a boiling stew of visionary gibberish. The time to call this what it is is long overdue. Pretentious hubris. Creative and enjoyable, certainly, but unfortunately a form of narcotic that ensnares the gullible and confuses them about authentic principles of well-grounded authentic research and theory - and planning!

5 out of 5 stars As Profound as the Bible.......2006-05-04

Soleri is a genius, a true futurist and visionary. Not since Gerard K. O'Neill's "The High Frontier" have I read such a masterpiece of futurism about what truly could become our future. Arcologies, from the words architecture and ecology, could house thousands, even millions of people. They could even launch into space, bringing the dream of so many visionaries to life, as Man fills the skies with these floating space cities. Arcologies would be clean, easy to transport in and out of, and could house its' citizens in luxury and comfort. Humans could eliminate sprawling cities and build strutures that would house up to many millions while leaving the rest of the land around them to nature. Arcologies are the future of Man, and Soleri has set the stage, along with many others, to guide mankind into an era of megastructures in which recycling technologies and mass building projects could finally eliminate poverty, homelessness, and set the stage for our expansion into space.

5 out of 5 stars Imagine a complete city in one structure.......2002-08-22

If you can imagine a future where cities cover every bit of earth's available space (think LA everywhere), then you can also imagine an alternative. Whole cities inside massive structures of incredible design, leaving most of our precious land open for us to enjoy and treasure. Paolo Soleri envisioned such cities and his drawings will inspire you and spark your imagination of what could be. Imagine cities that float on the sea or stretch across canyons and you will get the idea. Architecture students or just about anyone with an imagination will be amazed by his designs. I hope to live long enough to see one of his massive structures built.

          Book Description

In 1987, Drex Brooks began photographing sites that had been important in the history of white/Native American relations, places such as treaty sites and battlefields. This body of work is named Sweet Medicine after a Cheyenne cultural hero who taught his people their rituals and ceremonies and who also foresaw the changes and destruction that the white man would bring. The photographs encompass not only places of death but also places of renewal, places that retain their sacred importance today, even though, in many cases, little is there to inform others of what occurred.

The meaning of what happened in these places, from Massachusetts to the state of Washington, from Minnesota to Mississippi, is difficult to fathom and accept, as Patricia Limerick notes in her provocative essay. The Indian wars are a topic most prefer to know only superficially, or to ignore altogether, but she maintains that an understanding of their complexity as well as their violence is critical to an understanding of this nation's history.

This book is for anyone interested in the history of the native peoples in this country and in the events from 1620 to 1890 that so profoundly altered—but didn't quite destroy—their lives.

          4 out of 5 stars Stunning Photographs.......2001-01-05

I recently bought this book for myself on-line. I had not seen the book in real life but I was not disappointed. The photographs are stunning. They are all black and white and bring an erie reality to how I pictured a lot of the places shown. I have been reading a lot of Native American history and it is nice to have photos of a lot of the places I have read about. The narratives are well written, although a little general in nature. Overall - a good coffee-table type book.

                                          Book Description

This book offers a timely analysis of work and labor processes and how they are rapidly changing under globalization. The contributors explore traditional sectors of the U.S. and world economies--from auto to steel to agriculture--as well as work under new production arrangements, such as third world export processing zones. They explain why more intensified forms of control by the state and by capital interests are emerging under globalization. Yet they also emphasize new possibilities for labor, including new forms of organizing and power sharing in a rapidly changing economy. Visit our website for sample chapters!

I had to read this book by breast cancer survivor and journalist, Kathy Latour in small doses. If you're still in denial about your breast cancer, or a loved one's breast cancer, you might not want to read it at all---although you somehow need to move out of denial as quickly as possible. Here are some statistics from the National Cancer Institute web site that might help you (at least you're not alone with your disease):

"Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. It continues to be a major health care problem in the US and worldwide. The lifetime risk of a US woman developing breast cancer is 1 in 8 and the risk increases with advancing age--1 in 54 by age 50 and 1 in 23 by age 60 (National Cancer Institute, 2000). Over 75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are age 50 or older."

Okay so I'm part of the 75% over 50 years old, but one of the really scary things about this book is the youth of the women who were diagnosed for the first time. The author was 37. My sister was 36. Many of the women whose stories are told in "The Breast Cancer Companion" were in their twenties or early thirties when they first discovered a suspicious lump. Some of the worst stories in the book (for me) concerned women who discovered their cancer during pregnancy.

"Coping with Chemotherapy and Its Effects," and "Lymphedema and Infection" tie for the second-most-depressing chapters. You may find "Facing Death" even more dismal. Not me. Not now, at least.

Even though this book is biased toward the stories and treatments of younger women, I think those of us who are post-menopausal will still benefit from reading it. I just skipped the sections on becoming pregnant during or after treatment, and grief counseling for children.

One other caution: my oncologist says that the chapter on bone marrow transplants is already out-of-date, even though this book was published in 1993. Use "The Breast Cancer Companion" as you would use advice and sympathy from a friend who has survived her disease for ten years. Go to the Internet for more up-to-date information on risk factors, treatment options, and outcomes. Some sites I found especially useful were sponsored by The American Cancer Society, Imaginis, The National Cancer Institute, and BreastDoctor (although the latter site has some gory photographs---not for the weak of stomach!). The American Cancer Society site even has a `wizard' to help you through your treatment options (you'll need a copy of your pathology report to use the wizard).

Good luck to you. If you've read this review and plan to get a copy of "The Breast Cancer Companion" (or do other research), then you're obviously beyond denial, and I think that's a very positive sign.

5 out of 5 stars From diagnosis through recovery or death.......2001-12-02

I had to read this book by breast cancer survivor and journalist, Kathy Latour in small doses. If you're still in denial about your breast cancer, or a loved one's breast cancer, you might not want to read it at all---although you somehow need to move out of denial as quickly as possible. (...)One of the really scary things about this book is the youth of the women who were diagnosed for the first time. (...) Many of the women whose stories are told in "The Breast Cancer Companion" were in their twenties or early thirties when they first discovered a suspicious lump. Some of the worst stories in the book (for me) concerned women who discovered their cancer during pregnancy.

"Coping with Chemotherapy and Its Effects," and "Lymphedema and Infection" tie for the second-most-depressing chapters. You may find "Facing Death" even more dismal. (...)

5 out of 5 stars I strongly recommend this book........2000-01-19

It helped me make some important decisions regarding the type of reconstruction (following a masectomy) that would be best. The patient interviews portion and the before and after reconstruction pictures are wonderful. Additionally, when I had lymphodema following surgery, the book told me of a new ten-chamber pump that actually did move the fluid from my arm and "cured" me. This is after months with a three-chamber pump (used an hour a day) that my doctor and physical therapist recommended. Neither one of them had heard of the ten-chamber pump.

4 out of 5 stars We all need an extra copy for others!.......1998-11-21

Companion - absolutely. Where I went, it went during the first months. There was always an answer to help me center myself. I've now designed a website which I hope will be just a bit of what Kathy's book did for me. It is must reading for anyone diagnosed, and those who love her.

5 out of 5 stars Read the book. Loved the book........1998-04-28

This book helped me alot. Went through the modified radical, going through chemo and soon radiation. Now I know what to expect. This book told me all I needed to know. The worst part is the fear of the unknown. Now I know.

Overfield did a nice job of gathering a number of source documents including troop rosters, their distribution, and for too many, their dispositions. He presents the first battle reports from Reno and Benteen who references hearing gunfire down river. They swore differently at the Courts Martial. This is one of several books I keep to the front of my Custer shelf.

                                          Book Description

In the summer of 1900, bands of peasant youths from the villages of north China streamed into Beijing to besiege the foreign legations, attracting the attention of the entire world. Joseph Esherick reconstructs the early history of the Boxers, challenging the traditional view that they grew from earlier anti-dynastic sects, and stressing instead the impact of social ecology and popular culture.

4 out of 5 stars A valuable book on the boxer rebellion.......2002-04-22

This is excellent research coupled with great story-telling. Esherick clearly lays down the case for the Boxer phenomenon as emanating from the Shantung peninsula and not directly related to previous rebellions. It was the German missionaries and mismanagement by the Qing officials that ignited this specific outbreak.
I didn't care much for the statistical handling of some of the data as I felt this aspect irrelevant to the book.

Professor Esherick chronicles the origins of the uprising in stunning detail, debunking the popular notions and sensationalistic legends. Higest recommendtion.

                                                            Book Description

"In the early nineteenth century there were so many passenger pigeons that the sky darkened when they flew overhead; it took three days for flocks to pass. They were killed by hunters or disappeared when their oak and beech habitats were destroyed. The last bird, named Martha (only the last of any species seems to merit a human name), died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1905." Here, in photographs and words, are stirring reminders of wild beauty that is no more, as well as profiles of species whose survival is in peril. Rosamond Purcell's seventy spectacular color photographs--taken primarily at the Natural History Museum in Leiden, Holland, which holds the world's most extensive collection of lost species--tell a haunting and foreboding tale.

I'm afraid I was dissapointed in the book. Either it was a lame attempt at an artsy style or there was a decision to try and keep costs down by limiting the number of photographs. In way too many cases the photographer seemed to be obsessed with dramatic lighting of extreme closeups. Although the photos were well done, in very few cases were there full body pictures. In other cases the head would be brightly lit while the rest of the body (of what there was included) would be in deep shadow. The most dissapointing were the Cuban Macaw, and the Cape and Barbary Lions. The text, although well written, was also very sparce, and could have used some map diagrams to show population ranges. In short, there was a lot of empty space that could have been filled with photographs and information. The only reason I would reccomend the book is that as far as I know its the only one of its kind. I sincerely hope someday another book will be made with more descriptive text, and several photographs of various angles for a more "scientific" and comprehensive coverage. Those stuffed animals will not last forever and there is definitly a need for a well documented record.

                                                            5 out of 5 stars Haunting with a Purpose.......2000-12-11

I heard about this book in a magazine before it came out, and I just had to own it. The combination of rare photographs and case studies on each animal were irresistable. Such animals would be forgotten without the artistic eye of Purcell and the efforts of naturalists to complile their stories. The photographs of the museum specimens are haunting, but with a clear purpose. It shows the importance of conserving the species we have left, so that we do not have to depend upon mishapen skins to remember them. I hope those who read this book recognize the human error in the past so that we cannot make the same mistakes in the future.

5 out of 5 stars An urgent sense of loss..........2000-03-03

Each photograph of Swift as a Shadow greets the reader as a quick slap in the face. The range of 'grotesquely beautiful' images leaves the reader with a sense of helplessness when the initial awe of beauty turns to the realisation that in most cases the creatures displayed are gone forever. The multitude of animals, birds and even fish represented is an amazing array seldom found in one volume. Some animals represented are quagga, barbary lion, thyacine, javan tiger. The birds are an extensive collection (usually more than one example) representing most of the infamous and unfortunate extinctions of our time; Carolina Parakeets, Passenger Pigeons, Great Auk, Pink Headed Duck, Labrador Duck, Paradise Parrots (amazing!) Huias plus Dodo bones and Elephant Bird eggs to name a few!

Text is sparse, and given the stark, sometimes ghoulish photgraphic reality, this is not a detraction from the books theme. All photographs are high gloss quality, if a little detail restricted by 'photographing for arts' sake' eg; back neck view only of the quagga, skin pattern only of the Balinese Tiger. I'm sure that enthusiasts of endangered animals will now strongly consider a visit to the Natuurhistorisch Museum of Leiden, Netherlands, once in their lifetime.

The photos in this book are not images you want to put in your child's nusery, but they tell the story of animal extinction better than any post-card shot could. This book highlights the finality of extinction as well as the importance of natural history museums.

5 out of 5 stars This is an interesting book on part of Naturalis collection.......1999-08-31

The Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum Naturalis of Leiden, Netherlands, exhibits a collection of extinct and near extinct animals. Photography on this part of the museum collection is done by Rosamond Purcell. Texts are written by Lars v.d. Hoek Ostende, Martien van Oijen, Rinus Hoogmoed, René Dekker and Chris Smeenk. Editing was done by educational officer Lars. So the bibliographic refernce best should read: Swift as a Shadow, ed. Hoek Ostende (Lars v.d.) Photography Rosamond (Wolff) Purcell. Being a museum employee I may not appear to be an objective reviewer but the collection is famous. Photography and text are fully worth buying it!
