Book Description

For all those interested in the relationship between ideas and the built environment, John Onians provides a lively illustrated account of the range of meanings that Western culture has assigned to the Classical orders. Onians shows that during the 2,000 years from their first appearance in ancient Greece through their codification in Renaissance Italy, the orders--the columns and capitals known as Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, and Composite--were made to serve expressive purposes, engaging the viewer in a continuing visual dialogue.

3 out of 5 stars Original but often questionable.......2003-03-19

Note: This book spans the 5th century BC to the 16th century AD. I read the portion from the 5th to the 15th centuries as that was all that was applicable to my research.

Onians takes on an impressive task in this book: tracing the use and meaning of the Classical orders from their still poorly understood and greatly mythologized origins, through a period in which tradition would claim that they disappeared, and into the age of their supposed revival. The topic alone is innovative, and many of Onians' interpretations are correspondingly iconoclastic. Unfortunately, these interpretations, though intriguing, often lack substantiating evidence and/or are very broad generalizations based on archetypal pairs of opposites such as male/female or structure/ornament. In his chapters regarding the ancient world, Onians tends to take a rather Vitruvian view of architecture, classifying columns as male or female despite Vitruvius post-dating much of the architecture Onians discusses. It is notable that in his discussion of the Gothic Onians addresses the continued used of ancient orders; however, he remains disappointingly blind to the possibility that this implies a continued interest in the ancient world. As for the Renaissance, I was pleased to see Onians arguing that the early stages of this movement involved not a revival of the antique but a remodeling of the medieval in ancient terms in order to rival the ancient world. Unfortunately, Onians does not present convincing evidence for this point of view--in particular, he cannot overcome the traditional argument that many of the medieval Tuscan forms found in quattrocento architecture are present as a result of the misdating of such monuments as the Baptistery of Florence to ancient Roman times. Perhaps the fatal flaw of the book, however, is Onians' relentless need to find a single theme for each period he examines. Thus, architecture in the ancient world revolved around the principles of masculine and feminine; the medieval focus was on spiritual and symbolic use of architecture in order to reconcile pagan forms with Christianity; and the quattrocento was about "cleaning up" after the middle ages. It is sometimes painful to watch Onians as he tries his best to fit exceptions to his rules, often falling back on single words in theoretical texts in order to do so. I would have preferred a bit more practicality and give in the interpretive framework of this book.

Ultimately, this book is ambitious and thought-provoking at best, but problematic and sometimes misleading at worst. I would recommend it to those who are curious about the subject and want to hear some unusual theories. I would not recommend it as the cornerstone for anyone's research or as a "good introduction."

    Book Description

At last available in English, this classic text was originally published in Germany in 1951 and has been continuously in print since then. Gunter Bandmann analyzes the architecture of societies in western Europe up to the twelfth century that aspired to be the heirs to the Roman Empire. He examines the occurrence and recurrence of basic forms not as stylistic evolutions but as meaningful expressions of meta-material content and develops an architectural iconography of symbolic, historical, and aesthetic elements.

When I purchased this book - Underground Art: London Transport Posters 1908 to Present - I expected it to contain ALL of the London Transport Posters from 1908 to the date of publication as implied in the title.

It does NOT. However, it does contain some 200 of them - but not ALL of them! The book is great for what it provides, but that's not why I purchased it. Don't you be fooled too.

            5 out of 5 stars A treasure!.......2000-07-01

I bought this book in London 10 years ago and it's never left my "at-hand" reading. Beautifully designed with thorough (if a bit dry) commentary, its variety of styles and graphic whimsy and innovation is inspiring. I've recommended this book to both designers and Anglophiles.

Each page of this book presents a whimsical view of the reality of Christian life. As an elder, I found this book a suprisingly humorous, fresh and accurate look at everyday attitudes and actions I see every day. The author helped me see humor in many situations, from struggles in theology to its general mis-application, but always as life is lived out. Author and artist Judd recreates many of the thoughts I dared not share, but has done so in a very disarming way. I would recommend this book for the pastor who needs to laugh -in private, and the elder who needs to see himself in the mirror, and the Christian who can't understand why the church is the way it is. Most of all, it will help you endear the Body as God sees it, sometimes with pity, most of the time with humor, but always in love. I reccomend this book as an inexpensive, but invaluable reference book, as a gift to a fellow believer or for the pastor / elder who has most everything but a sense of humor. It puts "humor" back in the "humerous (funny bone)." Oh, and his humor is much better than mine. (I picture him as a "Bill Gates" looking type guy, but wouldn't it be a scream if he was a big tough ex-marine type!) Anyway, for the price, Amazon is offering a steal here. Buy it, you won't be dissapointed.

                                          Book Description

In many poor communities whole populations are without financial services of any kind. This book is about the alternatives, and they take many forms. While banks are not charities, in some countries charities are becoming banks. Elsewhere governments are working with banks to address issues of poverty and social cohesion. New forms of financial services are destined to play an important role within both developed and developing countries all over the world. Contributors to this book examine bank exclusion in the UK; how poor communities and small enterprises in the US are excluded; the impact of new technology; and the causes of the finance gap. Examples are drawn from the North and South, the UK, the US, Germany, and Italy's first ethical bank.

                                              Book Description

Monitoring Sweatshops offers the first comprehensive assessment of efforts to address and improve conditions in garment factories. Jill Esbenshade describes the government's efforts to persuade retailers and clothing companies to participate in private monitoring programs. She shows the different approaches to monitoring that firms have taken, and the variety of private monitors employed, from large accounting companies to local non-profits. Esbenshade also shows how the efforts of the anti-sweatshop movement have forced companies to employ monitors overseas as well.

When monitoring is understood as the result of the withdrawal of governments from enforcing labor standards as well as the weakening of labor unions, it becomes clear that the United States is experiencing a shift from a social contract between workers, businesses, and government to one that Esbenshade calls the social responsibility contract. She illustrates this by presenting the recent history of monitoring, with considerable attention to the most thorough of the Department of Labor's programs, the one in Los Angeles. She also explains the maze of alternative approaches being employed worldwide to decide the questions of what should be monitored and by whom.

The traditional doctor-patient relationship is in jeopardy. In an era of "hurry up" medicine and "patient quotas," health care professionals are no longer able to apply good bedside manner-the healing touch. As the focus shifts from patients to profits, this vital component of patient care diminishes and may eventually be lost. In The Healing Touch, David Cram, M.D., a master clinician, teaches the art of good bedside manner and offers a valuable resource for health care professionals striving to preserve the doctor-patient relationship.

*NOK = Next Of Kin. This diary-like book is authored by the surviving brother of a World War II casualty from the wreck of the HMT Rhona. The Rhona's story is one of the war's best kept and tragic secrets and Bennett's book, while it could have benefitted from more extensive editing, is a moving tribute to his brother and the other 1,000+ men who perished when she was attacked. Interesting, bittersweet reading.

                                                    Book Description

From Fleet Street to the world of medicine, from the City of London to the corridors of power in Whitehall, Scots have exerted a determining influence on key areas of British life since the Union of the Parliaments in 1707. Now that Scots dominate Westminster and run their own parliament in Edinburgh, is the tartan takeover complete? Through revealing interviews with some of the most successful Scots in London, including Kirsty Wark, Sheena Macdonald, Tam Dalyell, Norman Lamont, and William Dalrymple, this book shows how citizens of the poorest part of the United Kingdom have gained unprecedented influence over British politics, the media, and commerce. With English commentators beginning to question the power of the Scots as never before, this hard-hitting book takes a challenging look at exactly how much power lies in Scottish hands in today's devolved United Kingdom.

Sometimes manuscripts exceed even their authors' expectations and intentions, and this is one. Dr. Stenhouse has written a book that may be bigger, go further, and have wider ripples and deeper consequences than perhaps even he realizes. His exploration of the pervasive involvement of Scots at the heart of the British Isles has fundamental implications for the state of the British union. From politics and journalism, through law and medicine, to pubs and clubs, Dr. Stenhouse unfolds how every nook and cranny of London - and hence British - life has been filled and led by Scots.

The Scots have for centuries, but now more than ever, been at the centre of the apparatus of the British state. Today they occupy the highest two offices in the land, Prime Minister and Chancellor, as well as a disproportionately large number of cabinet ministers. That they not only founded the BBC itself through Lord Reith but now dominate political (and other) journalism, their success in the English courts and law firms, finance houses and universities, all brings to the fore an old question: how does Scotland relate to England and the UK with a Scottish parliament again in existence after three hundred years and given that its own men and women have infiltrated to the top every institution of the British state?

Dr. Stenhouse's exploration of every level of this "tartan takeover" demonstrates how the auld "Mid-Lothian Question" applies not merely at the political level but in every area of the state, the law, science and culture. Towards the end, his reflections on the new English political nationalism - arising as power is devolved to the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish assemblies, turns the lense around and asks sharp questions about how the United Kingdom will hold together.

This is a compelling book, mixing humorous anecdotes, wonderfully written, it will be enjoyed as the best of historical journalism and social history that demands answers to crucial questions today.
