Interesting examples of mathematical art........2006-03-20

The author used a Fortran program to draw a set of lattice patterns that fall into seventeen categories. Each category corresponds to one of the seventeen two-dimensional space groups. The full-page design is created by first constructing a tile. An elementary set of line segments and arcs is taken and then manipulated using a space group. After a tile is created, it is repeated to fill the page.
There are forty-four different designs on these pages and some are quite striking. As someone who has read books on mathematical art across cultures, I recognized some of the patterns. Not exactly, but to a high degree of accuracy. These designs are well worth looking at if you are interested in finding patterns for artwork, quilts or any other visual effect.

Good overview of policy + helpful contact info.......2003-08-15

As a recent college graduate from Pennsylvania, I was lured to the DC area by the prospect of securing a job in a city with an above-average economy. However, like any young adult embarking on a first career, my knowledge of applying to jobs was negligible, especially concerning the DC job market. As a result, I bought this book in the hopes of learning more about the types of jobs that are available in this city. In short, the book did not disappoint me.

By reading the book, I was able to expand my knowledge of public policy, an area that many students often do not explore. The book showed me that you do not need a public policy degree to secure a job in this city; you just need decent grades, some small internships (not necessarily in DC), and lots of motivation.

The early pages of the book introduce you to the public policy field, the art of writing resumes and cover letters, and the skills involved in phoning and interviewing with prospective employers. These first 30 pages could apply to nearly any type of job, but the book moves on to provide about 14 useful contacts and search engines for finding a DC internship and about a couple hundred contacts for full-time jobs in Congress, federal agencies and departments, interest groups and think tanks, trade associations and labor unions, and the news media. With a chapter (and corresponding profile of actual employees) devoted to each type of public policy job, you learn the pros and cons of each type, thereby allowing you to eliminate certain jobs and to focus on securing job offers that are more suitable to your interests.

Overall, the book is one of the most informative about public policy, but I do offer a few tips to future readers. First, narrowing your job search to the more appealing types of organizations that offer policy jobs is smart, but do not be too selective. After all, the current economy, even in DC, is tough for job seekers, and your first DC job probably will not be the "perfect" fit; instead, it will be a good fit. (I secured a good position at a trade association that I never thought I would work at, but the work, people, and pay are great.) Second, when using the contact information provided by the book, be sure to first verify it at the organization's website. This book was published in 2000, so the names of many contact persons have changed since then. Finally, although the book provides two examples of vacancy announcements for the federal government, it does not include any examples of KSAs. It does include a couple examples of resumes that are suitable for jobs outside the government, but if these resumes were real, their applicants would not even be interviewed because the resumes are so short and unimpressive.

Take DC by storm !.......2001-06-21

This book is great. If you're looking to get your feet wet in DC, or make it a career this book is informative, easy to read and helpful. It untangles the web and labyrinth of DC organizations, political organizations and the city.

Easy to understand chapters break it down, and make it simple. Highly recommended for the 'off the turnip truck' intern or the seasoned professional coming to DC.

About seeing your child with awe, raising her with patience........1998-08-24

This book uses one woman's experience as a seasoned caretaker to illustrate how to be with children "through" there emotions, rather than attempting to always distract them away from them. One of it's primary focuses is to encourage parents not to teach that some emotions are " bad" and some good. It made me more aware of attempting to see things from my children's perspective, to value their differences, respect their incredible ability to know what they need, and to see their unwillingness to "be molded" as a blessing. I read the entire book straight through, refer back to it often and give it as a gift when I can. It is not a strict "how to". If you are at all aware, you already know "how to", this book will guide you to that.

A must for new parents (and maybe old ones too !).......1998-08-23

As a recent father and a person who has a great interest in spiritual issues, the title of the book attracted my attention. I have read some other titles on parenting and techniques of same, but this is truly an excellent read.

Some of the topics in the book should have been expanded (the philosophical discussion on the "picking our parents" at the end of chapter one, etc.).

Helen Hood is either a very open hearted person or a very convincing author.

I have read the book twice and I intend reading it again, and again.

Book Description

Hurricanes over Singapore is the companion volume to the successful Buffaloes over Singapore published in 2003. It continues the story of the RAF's gallant but futile attempt to stop the might of the Japanese invasion force in its quest to conquer not only Singapore, but also Sumatra and Java and all the other islands that constituted the Netherlands East Indies.

The Hurricanes went into action over Singapore on 20 January 1942 and the last two aircraft made the final flight at Java on 8 March that year. During the intervening time the Hurricane pilots and ground crew - British, New Zealanders, Australians, Canadians, Dutch and Americans - gave their all, with many making the supreme sacrifice. The majority of survivors would spend the next 3 .50 years as prisoners of the Japanese - and some of their heart-rending stories are detailed here.

This expertly researched account, the most comprehensive to date, and accompanied by rare photographs, is told wherever possible by the pilots themselves, the majority of whom were young and inexperienced. Their efforts should not be forgotten and this book is a dispassionate tribute to those who fell in battle, those who died as prisoners and those who survived the trials and tribulations of imprisonment.

I found it hard to put this book down, there has been so little coverage of the war in the air over Singapore. I am definitely going to order the first book in the series, "Buffaloes Over Singapore", also.

Newcomers to a losing battle.......2005-09-10

Hurricanes were to save the world in 1942, or at least the British and Dutch Far East. This was not to be. Much in the same lines as "Buffaloes over Singapore", this book takes an in-depth, day-by-day look on Hurricane operations in the same theater. Again, there is not much in the way of analysis or comments, but the matter-of-fact accounts of the pilots who undertook operations in the fast-crumbling situation over Java and Singapore. The drama and the inevitability of fate, like a Greek tragedy, are readily felt as the campaign draws to its inescapable end. There is a very interesting photo section made up of the very few period pictures existing. There is a whole chapter on the life of surviving pilots as PoWs. Appendices show the complete Hurricane victory claims, the casualties, and the origins and fate of every single airframe serving with 232 (P), 232, 258, 242, and 605 Sqns. Ideal companion to the former "Buffaloes..." and indispensable component of any collection of books on the Pacific war.

Not what I expected.......2006-03-08

I was looking for books to help with the behavior of my macaw. This book is full of pictures, beautiful pictures. However, I really need help with my bird. Maybe I didn't read the description thoroughly enough.

"For the Parrot & Art Lover Both".......2001-07-19

This is an oversized book of vividly colored line-drawings of the Cockatoo, Macaw, and Amazon parrots species. It's a truly magnificently produced book with Elizabeth Butterworth's beautiful artistic drawings that are just so realistic. You could actually frame many of these drawings, they are that good. There's a wonderful introduction about all these parrots by Elizabeth that is inspirational. If you're a lover of birds, or have companion parrots yourself, don't miss this book.

One of the best bird drawings I have seen, they are so well done, that one wishes to frame each one of the them, if you like birds and you like colour this book is for you.

Parrots, MacAws and Cockatoos : The Art of Elizabeth Butterw.......2000-04-13

If you are a lover of cockatoo, macaw and amazon, the line-drawings of these birds will take your breath away. When I first opened the book, I gasped! Ms. Butterworth has captured the essence of their character, even more so than a photograph. The line-drawings in this book deserve to be framed and showcased in a prominent position in your home. I bought 3 books. I framed pictures from the first, and kept the second for reference, and gave the third book as a gift to Dr. Bernadette Plair who is with the Cincinnati Zoo. Dr. Plair recently (March 2000), successfully reintroduced the blue and gold macaw back into the wild in Trinidad.
