4 out of 5 stars Covering All the Bases..........2000-07-06

Although my interest is mainly focused on wedding and portrait photoghraphy, the other chapters were informative. They explained how to deal with editorial, advertising and corporate clients, to name a few. Throughout the book the author gives helpful sources to follow up on, including questions and anwsers with experts at the end of every chapter.

                              Book Description

The history of the American labor movement is filled with advances, triumphs, setbacks, decline, and resurgence. American unions have not only protected workers and influenced business practices, but have also played important roles in American politics. The AFL-CIO, the Teamsters, and the United Farm Workers are just three examples of unions that have exerted wide influence far beyond the scope of industry. Labor leaders, including Samuel Gompers, John L. Lewis, Eugene Debs, Cesar Chavez, and Jimmy Hoffa, have become icons of U.S. history. Serving as the ideal place for students and interested readers to begin their research, this two-volume A-Z resource covers the history of organized labor in all of its complexity, from the dawn of the industrial revolution to the "post-industrial age." Nearly 400 entries cover:
                            • Unions
                            • Labor leaders
                            • Key legislation
                            • Major court cases
                            • Landmark events
                            • Critical terminology
                            • Anti-union organizations
                            • And much more Entries are packed with current information and are clearly written and engaging to specialists and non-specialists alike. Also included are nearly 100 illustrations and 55 primary documents that range from autobiographies to song lyrics and contracts, enabling students to read the actual words of critical documents in American labor history. Entries are extensively cross-referenced and include bibliographies. A general bibliography will also direct readers to further avenues of research.

                                  Book Description

Suicide bombings continue remorselessly to traumatize the Israeli people as the world’s media, on each occasion, bring dramatic pictures of the terror and carnage caused. Much less wellknown, and very little publicized, however, is the daily fear, poverty and anger of West Bank and Gaza Palestinians as a result of the continuing presence of over 300,000 Jewish settlers in their midst, as well as the ongoing Israeli military occupation, economic sanctions and constant retaliations. This is what this book is about.

Equally important, Nicholas Guyatt examines the Oslo Peace Accords which, when the Israeli Government and the PLO signed them in 1993, raised such high hopes of a permanent settlement of the Palestine Question. He shows the problem to be not just incomplete implementation of the Accords (although Israel is frequently procrastinating), but their very conception. There can be no economically viable Palestinian state, nor one which can command the respect and enthusiasm of Palestinians, so long as its territory remains fragmented by a growing number of Jewish settlements, the Palestinian Authority becomes a surrogate policeman for the Israeli government, and the Palestinian enclaves are dependent on Israel for access to the outside world, for electrical power, for jobs and so many of the other necessities of life.

This book needs to be read by all those who are puzzled by why the Oslo process, from which so much was expected, now seems to be making so little contribution to peace on the ground, and who wish to understand whether there may be alternatives holding out more hope of a permanent and just settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This book is atrocious. It uses false claims and illogic to justify stealing land from the land-poor. If we all behaved like Guyatt, we'd be at war all the time, with no mechanism for thinking about peace, let alone talking about it or achieving it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent presentation of the Palestinian perspective.......2001-11-19

A more appropriate title for this book would be: The Absence of Peace: Palestinian Perspectives on the Oslo Peace Accords. This title would make clear that (a) this book presents solely the Palestinian perspective and (b) the scope of the book is relatively recent events. Thus, this book is not a good choice for those who are looking for an overview of the entire Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. However, for those who already have developed a basic historical and political framework for this complex arena, this book is immensely helpful.

In order to understand the repeated failure of the peace process, one must understand the Palestinian perspective. This author crafts an articulate and well referenced description of how Palestinian frustration, anger, and hopelessness have been fueled by Israeli actions. This book asserts that the Oslo Peace accords have exacerbated the on-going problems and presents a view of Palestinian life within the restrictions imposed on building, work, and travel within Israel. As a relatively neutral observer to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I found it very helpful to have the Palestinian perspective described so succinctly and articulately.

The final chapter of this book provides recommendations of possible options for future resolution of the conflict. This chapter was the highlight of the book and will assist me in understanding the success or failure of future efforts.

A note about perspectives and bias. The author is clearly impassioned and highly critical of Israel and its leaders. Nonetheless, I found Absence of Peace to be well referenced and credible. For example, most of the criticisms of Israeli leaders are supported by direct quotes from these leaders that have been published in newspapers. Each chapter concludes with 3-10 pages of footnotes. I also cross-referenced some of the allegations made against the Israeli security forces with Amnesty International reports and found them to be consistent. However, it is clear that this book presents solely the Palestinian perspective. For example, the author is repeatedly critical of the limitations imposed on Palestinian travel, but never acknowledges that Palestinian suicide bombers have at least some causal responsibility in these Israeli actions. It is very likely that this book will enrage readers who hold staunchly Zionist or pro-Israeli perspectives.

Overall, Absence of Peace is a readable and important book. It provides an understanding of Palestinian perspectives on the Oslo Peace Accords that also informs the reader's understanding of the broader issues within Israel and Palestine.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A very informative, well-researched book.......1999-12-25

Nicholas Guyatt's "The Absence of Peace" is a well-researched, thoughtful book on the Arab-Israeli conflict. Focusing on developments since the 1993 Oslo accords, Guyatt considers the causes of the peace agreement's failure. The author concentrates on the inherent difficulties in the accords themselves: for instance, that Palestine and Israel are inequitable authorities; that the PLO is only one quasi-authoritative body of Palestinian representatives; and that the United States, as permament member of the UN Security Council, is in a position to veto all UN resolutions criticising Israel's actions. I found Guyatt's analysis of Yitzhak Rabin's and Shimon Peres's political lives very helpful: for neither are so "dovish" as journalists have made them out to be, especially in light of Rabin's assasination, an act that made him the martyr for peace he really was not. Guyatt's treatment of Israeli-European relations was also very helpful. On the whole, I consider this book a very balanced criticism of Israeli policies toward the Palestine question. Unlike many other books on this topic, Guyatt's analysis refrains from conspiracist rhetoric while taking critical note of Israel's actions. Heartily recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Anti-Oslo author assumes rejectionist stance valid.......1999-07-29

Nicholas Guyatt's _The Absence of Peace_ is a work of obvious erudition which will be totally unacceptable to almost any pro-Israeli reader or historian. Masquerading as an indictment of the Oslo accords, it trashes the peacemaking reputations of Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres, implies that Israel has relentlessly engaged in ethnic cleansing, and laments the legacy of the Holocaust, which prevents the European Union from applying diplomatic pressure adequate to compel a return to the borders of 1949 or 1947. Based on largely on the documentation of Palestinian groups and partisans like Chomsky and Findley, it is a thinly-disguised attack on the legitimate achievements of the Middle East's only democracy, noteworthy only for an illuminating account of Operation Grapes of Wrath.

Birds of prey can be particularly difficult to track for a variety of reasons: - Nocturnal behavior - Remote habitats - Migratory patterns - Swift flight speeds

Hawks and Owls depicts both the subtle differences and rich diversity among these awe-inspiring birds. With crisp, clean photographs and precise identification notes, this guide makes quick and accurate classifications easier.

                                    The families of birds includes:

The information on each species is concisely organized and includes the differences between male and female, seasonal and immature plumage, morphs and distinctive markings. Color pictures and range maps accompany the text. The 180 photographs from award-winning photographers show these birds in their natural environments through the seasons. Comparison pages group similar-looking birds on a single page for quick reference.

Hawks and Owls is a sturdy, pocket-sized field guide that will be indispensable to naturalists, students and birders at all levels of experience, from Florida to Ontario.

The excellent quality of this field guide matches others by Chris Earley. Being able to study the large, clear, color closeups of these species will enhance your identification skills. Seasonal range maps, special notations, calls and sounds made, plus additional comparison charts in the back make this another must have. It's lightweight, easy to carry and worth adding to your collection of field guides!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for the Beginner.......2005-03-15

Birds of prey are regarded with particular fascination by many birders, but their identification presents a number of problems that can daunt the beginner. Hawks & Owls of the Great Lakes Region and Eastern North America, therefore, is an excellent introductory guide.

Each species has between two to four pages devotes to it. The majority of this space consists of photographs, depicting the species in flight and perched; save for a few, the photographs are crisp and clear. Aside from the brief introductory note and the more brief "nature notes," text is devoted to pointing out key features of the given species. Size, characteristics while perched and in flight, differences between males, females and juveniles, flight traits, and distinguishing calls are dealt with for each species, while relevant information concerning morphs and second year plummage, etc. is included when applicable.

Overall, I'm very impressed by this guide and highly recommend it to the beginning birder.

                                    4 out of 5 stars A Welcome Addition to a Crowded Field.......2004-07-09

A lingering perk: Some publishers still have my name listed as editor of the NAFA Hawk Chalk. Evidently Firefly Books is one, and I'm thankful for that. Some very good natural history and reference titles are available from this company, and they recently sent me one for review.

Chris G. Earley (the Canadian biologist who produced similar regional guides to sparrows & finches, and warblers; both titles with Firefly) makes an excellent addition to the growing list of photographic guides to North American raptors. There are some heavy hitters in this field already (e.g., Clark and Wheeler's 1995 guide and subsequent editions), which raise the bar for any newcomers. But Earley's concise volume is well constructed and worth adding to any falconer or birder's library.

Earley presents the raptors (diurnals first, then the owls) in their basic taxonomic groups or genera. He opens with a brief discussion of the guide's conventions (size comparisons, the standard icons he uses for quick reference, etc.) and good, basic advice for hawk watchers (to wit: watch the hawk first, as long as you can, then look it up). He completes his introduction with diagrams of avian anatomy as they relate to field identification, adding notes on common "hawk look-alikes" and a chart for best raptor viewing by season and species.

The following species accounts are brief, each covering two to four pages with large, well-composed color photos illustrating. A short note on natural history is typically accompanied by viewing and ID tips (some include literary quotes), and capped with the book's standardized set of icons and field notes. The author's selection of images is especially helpful, with color morphs and age-appropriate plumages displayed in easy-to-compare views. It is noteworthy that unlike some of the less qualified sources of raptor photo ID (especially those on the Web), the Cooper's hawks shown herein are actually Cooper's hawks; the Sharp-shins actually Sharp-shins. One particularly fine image (by Brian Wheeler) shows an adult male and female Cooper's standing together and dramatically captures their size dimorphism.

Earley closes this small volume with notes on how the public may help and observe raptors in their area, some suggested reading and a very helpful photographic "summing up" of included species that allows, via a series of charts, direct comparisons of similar species: the accipiters to each other, buteos to other buteos, and so on, which saves the reader the task of flipping pages to note the differences. Of course, I happily flipped between the pages anyway.

Hawks and owls, or raptors, as they are sometimes called, are charismatic birds. Ranging in size from the majestic Bald Eagle to the tiny Northern Saw-whet Owl, these fascinating creatures occupy forests, woodlots, fields, and wetlands, as well as urban parks and tree-lined city streets. The adventurous Peregrine Falcon has even been spotted on the clifflike skyscrapers and tall bridges of New York City and Philadelphia. Raptors are all around us—all we need to do is look for them at the right times, in the right places.

Hawks and Owls of Eastern North America provides an enjoyable and informative introduction to these incredible birds. Illustrated with more than eighty black and white and thirty stunning color photographs, it describes their identifying characteristics, behaviors, habitats, and what's being done to protect them. In chapters on citizen science and recreation, readers will also learn how they can experience raptors firsthand through study and observation.

Birders, hawk and owl watchers, nature and wildlife photographers, youth groups, and high school and college students can all turn to this book as an essential resource on these remarkable birds of prey.

Hawks and Owls of Eastern North America. 2004. Donald S. Heintzelman. Rutgers University Press, New Brunswick, New Jersey and London. Hardcover, 213 pages.

The author has been active in raptor studies and conservation for 50 years. This is a real raptor book because it covers both hawks and owls. Most books called raptor guides cover only hawks and relatives in the order Falconiformes plus vultures and condors. This book interestingly does not cover vultures, which are usually grouped with hawks in most hawk guides.
Chapters cover raptor ecology, hawk migrations, owl migration and invasions, raptor conservation, citizen sciences, raptor watching, Osprey and Northern Harrier, Kites, Eagles, Accipiters, Soaring Hawks, Caracaras and Falcons, Barn Owls and Typical Owls. The factual information in each species account is supported by a thorough study of the published literature. It includes habitat, distribution, food habits, nesting and life cycle, behaviour, migration, and population. These concise headings allow one to find information quickly. There are many high quality and well-chosen black-and-white and colour photographs by numerous photographers.
This is an excellent source book for basic and accurate information on the hawks and owls in Eastern North America, including eastern Canada. I recommend this book to teachers, nature schools, and people interested in hawks and owls. Birders will find it a fine supplement to their field guides.

Recent publications about North American raptors have rarely covered well the wide middle-ground between specialized ornithological treatises and overly superficial introductions to the subject. This book by a distinguished raptor expert, author, and conservation leader spans the large gap successfully. The opening chapter provides an excellent introduction to raptor ecology, focusing primarily and appropriately on raptors' role as predators at the top of the food chain. Chapter two captures the drama of hawk migrations in spring and fall, explaining the landforms, weather conditions and other factors influencing where and when hawks migrate. Data are interpreted to illustrate patterns and trends in numbers at major migration routes throughout the eastern United States and Canada. These, it should be noted, are topics in which the author's vast knowledge has led to two of the foremost publications of their kind: A Guide to Hawk Watching in North America in 1979 and The Migrations of Hawks in 1986, both of which, incidentally, are worth seeking on the used book market. Chapter three describes the nearly invisible migratory movements by some owl species and the sometimes spectacular irruptions by others from the tundra and boreal forest of Canada far south into the United States. The emphasis given to raptor conservation in chapter four is particularly gratifying. Topics include infuriating and heartbreaking cases of raptor-killing, natural causes of raptor mortality, the many human-related threats, and-most importantly-an explanation of crucial raptor conservation and management efforts in the past, the present, and essential in the future for protection of many species. Chapters five and six deal with two strongly linked subjects: "citizen science," involving ways in which amateur ornithologists can help to collect data important in scientific study, and recreational raptor watching, which has exploded in recent decades to become one of the most popular aspects of ecotourism. Next come six chapters of species accounts for eastern North America's 22 regular breeding diurnal raptors, each described in terms of habitat, geographic distribution, food habits, nesting and life cycle, behavior, migration, and population. One small but interesting nugget worth special mention is a note on the oldest recorded age of each species, when known, which is a bit of information not otherwise easily obtainable for most people. Five western hawks that are accidental, with only one or a few records in the east, also receive at least a sentence or two about their out-of-range occurrences. The last two chapters cover 12 owl species in similar depth.
This book is sufficiently nontechnical to appeal to the general reader, yet it offers an abundance of information useful to the scientific community. The up-to-date 27-page bibliography is convincing evidence of the book's value to the latter group. It contains more than 700 listings of books, monographs, journal papers, and popular accounts, approximately 140 of which were published since 2000. Overall, Donald Heintzelman has distilled a half-century of intensive study of raptors into a single volume that is not only informative but a pleasure to read-as well as to relish its beautiful and dramatic array of photographs including many by the author. High school biology teachers as well as college instructors in ecology and other life sciences should consider this book for use as a supplemental text. Hawks and owls are exciting "poster birds," as the cliché goes, for creating awareness of wildlife conservation. As a means of enhancing both the excitement and the awareness, Hawks and Owls of Eastern North America is especially recommended to those in the fast-growing populations of outdoor enthusiasts, casual birdwatchers, and active birders.

                                    1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2004-11-01

I got up to page 23 and that was it. Mr. Heintzelman continually refers back to his previous works. Nothing like self promotion I guess, which is the reason for this poor rating, I found it disturbing enough that any technical text was overlooked by me.

In the 1960s, I lectured on hawks and owls for the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association. If this book had been available then, my talks would have been much better.Almost any question you can ask is answered in this book. The author is an excellent bird photographer. When he did not illustrate birds with his own photos, he had the good sense to use pictures by the likes of the legendary Ron Austing. My librarian wife is especially impressed by the comprehensive index. This book belongs in the library (or car) of every hawk watcher.
