    Book Description

As the human body moves, muscles contract and relax, creating subtle changes in body contours and shifting patterns of light and shadow on the skin's surface. Visualizing exactly what happens beneath the skin to cause these changes on the surface is an essential skill for artists, physicians, physical therapists, and body builders-for anyone who needs to understand the body in motion.

But how do you teach this skill?

Why not paint a live model to look as though his skin had been stripped off and then photograph him in multiple poses? From that idea comes Visualizing Muscles, an innovative aid to drawing, sculpting, and learning surface anatomy.

More than one hundred static and active poses are included in Visualizing Muscles. Paired photographs--one painted and labelled, one not--show how the simulated muscles produce the subtle lights and darks, hills and valleys, on the model's unpainted skin. Captions highlight the muscles called into play by a given pose.

Dr. Cody, who experimented with techniques for two years, pioneers the use of a model on whose skin muscles, tendons, and fascial sheaths are painted with scientific accuracy. Because of the elasticity of the skin and paint, the painted musculature expands and contracts along with the underlying muscles. Thus Cody's technique enables students of anatomy to visualize the muscles beneath the skin and the changes brought about by movement.

    This 8-1/2" x 11" book contains 9 full-color and 221 black-and-white photographs.

...exactly the surface anatomy reference ive been searching for. as a 3d artist it is essential that i reproduce human figure in an accurate and believable way for this you need effective reference. this book has it in spades.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Anatomy books for any Artist!.......2006-02-16

This is easily one of the greatest anatomy for artists books I've found. It covers various landmarks and on the opposite page uses a unique way to visualize the underlying muscle structure of the same pose. A must have book for any Artist!

4 out of 5 stars Art study only ! (not technical reference).......2001-01-25

This book is useful for artists such as painters and sculptors trying to accurately represent a muscular male body in different poses (like greek sculptures - Atlas, The Thinker, etc). Every page shows the model in a different position comparing the same pose in the "buff" with and without the painted muscles.

5 out of 5 stars excellent artistic reference.......1998-09-23

This book is extremely useful for anyone trying to master the interplay of muscle as it affects surface form

3 out of 5 stars Very good male nude reference book.......1998-02-07

A fair sized book, it's unique in the sense that the male model has the relevant muscles and tendons actually drawn on his body. Nice concept but I don't think it really helps. Because the muscles are tendons and the skin is, well, skin, it stretches as a mass and not as fibers. I think the poses are useful though, good lighting to show muscle definition and tone and decent-sized photographs too.

          Book Description

This new title presents, in its entirety, a new series of photographs by Vik Muniz, completed while he was artist-in-residence at the Frick Art & Historical Center in Pittsburgh. Muniz used his inimitable photographic eye to capture Clayton--the historical home of 19th century American industrialist Henry Clay Frick--through the eyes of a child. Muniz uses a 19th century 8 x 10 inch view camera to record a fictional narrative, using a deliberately low point of view that immerses the viewer in the perspective of a child. The result is a series of ominous and intriguing images that approach history in an imaginative, non-linear fashion. The book "Clayton Days" also features an essay by renowned author and photography critic Andy Grundberg that places this new series within the context of Muniz's past production and within the tradition of contemporary photography, and an extended dialogue with Muniz conducted by Linda Benedict-Jones, executive director of the Silver Eye Center for Photography. 2 out of 5 stars Poorly written.......2007-03-08

First, this book is tough to sit down and read. Lou may be a very good gym owner, but he's not a very good writer, so the publisher should have had someone more heavily edit and fix up the text before this ever went to print.

Also, who designed this book? It made me laugh out loud that every single image throughout the entire book was of huge, rippling-muscle body builders, and yet the text constantly reiterates that you don't want to advertise your gym with body-builders. So then why include them throughout your book? I understand this book was put out by MuscleMag, but the people who buy the book aren't necessarily going to be MuscleMag fans, and the images completely contradict what the book says. I mean, if they're the smallest percentage of people who attend your gym, why are they the only ones you show in the book? And I noticed at least twice that on the same page where it says, "Don't use an image of a huge muscle-man in the logo of your business because it will intimidate people" a man was shown wearing a shirt with a gym logo on it that had...a huge muscle-man image in it. ?????

I've never owned a gym. It's an idea that I'm considering for a bit in the future, and I bought this book to kind of give me an idea of what owning a gym entails. What are the pros and cons? What are the real challenges, and what are the real rewards?

Here is the advice I gathered from this book:
                  * Having a telephone in your gym is good, because then people can call you.
                  * Make sure your gym has gym equipment.
                  * Have an office in your gym (how could you NOT have an office? Where would you keep all your paperwork? Staple it to the walls???)
                  * Try not to have ripped, broken equipment.

If any of these tips helped you, you should seriously NOT consider ever opening a business.

Also, the entire book is obviously geared toward the big muscle men that it tries to tell me not to gear my gym toward. Women are mentioned as cursory afterthoughts--creatures who sometimes come to the gym wearing leotards and big hair. And all they do there is step aerobics, with their "shapely" step aerobics instructor. Or maybe they take "martial arts" with their "Oriental" martial arts instructor (yes, he actually says "oriental" to refer to a person).

Anyway, other than mildly offending me, this book really had no effect. It told me nothing that anyone who has ever worked out a gym wouldn't already know. I didn't really gather any pros or cons about owning a gym, or feel like the book taught me any insider secrets. So...skip it.

3 out of 5 stars Really too basic.......2007-02-12

If you are buying this kind of book and are serious about investing some money, this is not the book for you. It is too light and is very shallow. Nothing is wrong with the book, but there is not much too it.

I suspect it is being marketed at the same people who buy fitness magazines. That is fine, I buy them too, but if you are really going to put some serious cash into a business, get more serious than this.

5 out of 5 stars WOW THIS IS COMPLETELY AMAZING!!.......2006-09-17

I wayyyyyyy love this title. I love the picture format and the simple easy to read, uptone enthusiastic descriptors. I LOVE the magazine format, which I had my doubts about when the book arrived.......however its an AWESOME publication by Muscle Mag International, which is why its in glossy magazine print.

I have extensive business training, and work for a business consulting firm, and own and run a gym as an aside; so needless to say, I was looking for a more grass roots, bread and butter instruction manual on gym specifics, and more of the how-to's of other successful individuals, and not so much business advice. This Magazine/Book did it, it rocks!! It gave me lists of gear, and policy topics to write company policy on, as well as tips on member retention...I could go on, and on!!

I do suggest, though, that if you have LITTLE TO NO business experience, that you read this book first, THEN buy and read the Thomas Plummer books, as they give specific hard stats. The 2 of them will set you up amazingly.

Gym Biz REALLY is your guide to setup, kind of your, "Simple success manual here you go Start!" Everyone needs to read this!!

3 out of 5 stars Greatfull informations but there are more!.......2002-07-27

There are useful informations inside this book! But not all of them! Don't read only this one before opening your own Gym.
Read AND this one too! Good luck in your new bussiness.

1 out of 5 stars waste of time.......2002-03-20

The book has alot of pretty pictures, but that is about it. The book outlines only a superficial understanding of how to start and operate a gym. I was sorely disappointed and dropped it off to my local goodwill soon after reading it... Dont bother with this book.

                    Book Description

These essays discuss the service sector, an often neglected area of economic study. The contributors agree that services are replacing manufacturing as the employment base in most advanced economies. Their essays provide valuable insight into the causes, problems, and prospects of this transition. Commissioned for the Wharton-ARA Conference on the Service Economy, this collection examines the rise of the new economic order in the United States, Japanese, and international economies and the future and potential of the service sector. The volume concludes with an agenda for future research and policy of the service company.

This book begins with a short story about Magic Story Dust and how stories first came to be. This story leads directly into how a young aspiring storyteller can begin to create original stories. ...a very nice beginning!

If a young aspiring storyteller reads this book and does the notebook activities, he or she will have a story to tell! Of course they could then create a story about learning to tell stories! The possibilities are endless.

This IS a BASIC book, and it does fall down a bit in some areas. This can be easily remedied, though, by supplementing this book with other books, literature experiences, and a trusted adult.

Of the four children's books on storytelling that I've read for my Master's project--and two more books of which I am aware--this is the only one that guides them to creating their own stories from their own experience. It is very much worth the purchase!

You might also want to check out this author's storytelling website for children which is listed in the back of the book.

I am volunteer storyteller where my audience is primarily comprised of Girl Scouts and those who saw me tell at other events. Storytelling Adventures and Storytelling For The Fun Of It each have some very delightful stories having a moral or lesson of some sort which I have found useful to entertain and to teach. I haven't used this book to share the art of storytelling, but I have used many of its stories to spread the joy of storytelling. In particular, there is a story of The Missing Piece Puzzle Piece that allows me to gift my audience their piece of the puzzle and bring peace to their world. There is another about self confidence in which you can gift your audience a "magic" box of their own.

As a side note, I am very much a fan of Joseph Bruchac and his collaborative Keepers series of nature activities and the Native American stories which accompany each section. (i.e. Keepers of the Night and Keepers of the Animals)

You probably need a teacher or parent to guide the child through the activities such as using an overhead projector for storytelling. Reading level is for an older child, but the overtly cute sprites and rather tame stories may not appeal to that age group. Art work is rather clumsy, detracting from the books potential.
On the positive side, there are a variety of techniques that might spark ideas for teachers and librarians who do storytelling. The crafts have easy-to-follow instructions. The Read More About It sections include useful bibliographies, websites and resources.

This book is a wonderful supplement to one of the author's other books, Create Your Own Storytelling Stories. It begins with a VERY brief history of storytelling. From there the author writes about where and why kids are telling stories, and how the reader can join the fun.

Then there are several chapters about choosing stories for different situations. For instance, a storyteller might want to tell ghost stories or nature tales when at camp. A babysitter might want to use "creative toy stories" or "helper stories." There are simple project suggestions included in a few of these chapters.

In the next several chapters, the author presents some information on "how to tell a good story." This includes such topics as learning, practicing and telling the story. There is also information on using different types of props in one's storytelling, and a chapter on "mastering the art."

The final three chapters discuss the following topics:
                      1) how to hold a storytelling party
                      2) how to start a storytelling club
                      3) how to hold a young storytellers' festival.

This book, along with the book Create Your Own Storytelling Stories, would be a very good start for any young aspiring storyteller. It would also be helpful for the reader to have the help and encouragement of a trusted adult.

                          Book Description

At the height of the Cold War, the United States used foreign police and paramilitary assistance to combat the spread of communist revolution in the developing world. Support to the regime of Ngo Dinh Diem in South Vietnam became the single largest internal security programme during the 1955-1963 period. Yet despite presidential attention and a sustained campaign to transform Diem's police and paramilitary forces into modern, professional forces, the United States failed to achieve its objectives.

Using recently declassified government records, this book offers the first full-length assessment of America's struggle to remake Diem's internal security forces into "mirror images" of US police institutions. Operating at the zenith of America's national self-confidence, policymakers in Washington and police advisers on the ground in South East Asia were convinced that exporting US law enforcement techniques and values to Vietnam would help establish that country as a secure, progressive, and pro-Western nation.

Analyzing how and why the US campaign in South Vietnam failed, this volume sheds new light on the broader US programme of assistance to 'free world' internal security forces during the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations. Today, as the United States and its allies confront insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the global threat posed by al-Qa'ida, the challenge of building foreign internal security forces, and the demands of 'nation-building', have again become urgent priorities. The US experience in Vietnam serves as a cautionary tale and highlights the perils of imposing American notions about public order.
This book will be of much interest to students of US foreign policy, Intelligence Studies, Cold War studies, the Vietnam War and Security Studies in general.

                            Book Description

This ground-breaking volume fills a major historiographical gap by providing the first detailed book-length study of the period of the Protectorate Parliaments from September 1654 to April 1659. The study is very broad in its scope, covering topics as diverse as the British and Irish dimensions of the Protectorate Parliaments, the political and social nature of factions, problems of management, the legal and judicial aspects of Parliament's functions, foreign policy and the nature of the parliamentary franchise and elections in this period. In its wide-ranging analysis of Parliaments and politics throughout the Protectorate the book also examines both Lord Protectors, all three Protectorate Parliaments and the reasons why Oliver and Richard Cromwell were never able to achieve a stable working relationship with any Parliament. Its chronological coverage extends to the demise of the Third Protectorate Parliament in April 1659. This comprehensive account will appeal to historians of early modern British political history.

                                Book Description

The Protectorate is arguably the Cinderella of Interregnum studies: it lacks the immediate drama of the Regicide, the Republic or the Restoration, and is often dismissed as a 'retreat from revolution', a short period of conservative rule before the inevitable return of the Stuarts. The essays in this volume present new research that challenges this view. They argue instead that the Protectorate was dynamic and progressive, even if the policies put forward were not always successful, and often created further tensions within the government and between Whitehall and the localities. Particular topics include studies of Oliver Cromwell and his relationship with Parliament, and the awkward position inherited by his son, Richard; the role of art and architecture in creating a splendid protectoral court; and the important part played by the council, as a law-making body, as a political cockpit, and as part of a hierarchy of government covering not just England but also Ireland and Scotland. There are also investigations of the reactions to Cromwellian rule in Wales, in the towns and cities of the Severn/Avon basin, and in the local communities of England faced with a far-reaching programme of religious reform. PATRICK LITTLE is Senior Research Fellow at the History of Parliament Trust. Contributors: BARRY COWARD, DAVID L. SMITH, JASON PEACEY, PAUL HUNNEYBALL, BLAIR WORDEN, PETER GAUNT, LLOYD BOWEN, STEPHEN K. ROBERTS, CHRISTOPHER DURSTON.

                                  Book Description

The Cromwellian Protectorate examines the nature of the first regime ever to have had effective control of the British Isles and the impact that it had on England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, and on Britain’s international reputation. Few previous studies of the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell and his son, Richard, have given sufficient emphasis to its achievements. Instead they have characterized it either as "a military dictatorship" or a reactionary regime that after the revolutionary events of 1649 put Britain on a road that led inevitably to the restoration of the monarchy. This book presents an alternative view of the Cromwellian Protectorate.

                                      Book Description

John Lambert's life and career have long deserved this revealing study. The man who made Cromwell Lord Protector in 1653 also stopped him becoming king in 1657; and Lambert was the originator of the Instrument of Government, on which Cromwell's Protectorate was based. Committed to his deeply held, radical beliefs, Lambert first rose to prominence as a dashing cavalry commander in the civil wars of 1642 - 51, and he was a prominent upholder of the power of the New Model Army, particularly in his creation of the Major Generals, who ruled England in 1655. Lambert's refusal to countenance Cromwell as king saw his temporary fall from power, but he emerged after the Protector's death as a possible successor. His radical ideas seemed to threaten even 'his own side', and led to his imprisonment in the Tower in 1660, but he escaped and staged a last desperate republican stand against the return of Charles II. Although Lambert was subsequently convicted of treason, Charles did not have him executed - sure recognition that his character, private actions and beliefs were those of a man who was much more than a military revolutionary. DAVID FARR is head of history at Norwich School.

                                          Book Description

The "Photographic Handbook of the Rare Birds of Britain and Europe" is the most comprehensive collection ever to be published of photographs and descriptions of rare birds that have occurred in Europe in recent years. This revised and updated edition aims to give birders the most accurate and complete photographic record of Europe's rare birds. The photographs have been assembled from top photographers throughout the region and, wherever possible, are those of rarities actually photographed in Europe. The detailed and descriptive text, which covers the identification, habitat, range and European status of each species, is particularly concerned with highlighting those characteristics which birders will need to know for identification in the field. This unique book --now revised and updated with an additional 17 species -- has been assembled with the invaluable help of rarities committees and other experts throughout the continent, and is an indispensable guide for any birder interested in pursuing this fascinating and fast-growing aspect of birdwatching. Includes nearly 723 photographs, accompanied by full details of month, year, location and country; and detailed descriptions of 284 species, including true vagrants, very rare breeding birds, and some vagrant subspecies, cover identification, voice, habitat, distribution and European status.
